Japanese forces surrender after the atomic bombing of Hiroshima and Nakasaki; World War II is ended.

Izak Ison is born. (December 21.)

1957 

Sputnik-1 becomes Earth’s first artificial satellite. It has a profound affect on the world and enables Russia to take the lead in early Terran space development. Earth’s Space Age, and the so-called space race, begins. A Vulcan observation ship crash lands on Earth, remaining for several months before they are rescued.
