India is perhaps going to be the centre for the largest urban transition that is going to happen in the next decade. Even though one foresees a huge potential with this development, as a developing country we will not only continue to face the wrath of environmental degradation and social inequalities but also with new complex challenges like climate change and its effects. Realizing the need to adopt sustainable and equitable development after many years of discourse, about 193 nations including India finally adopted the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) at the end of the year 2015, which were agreed upon at the Rio + 20 Summit in 2012.
It is widely argued among development practioners that these global goals and targets have direct local linkages the day to day functioning of the Local governments are critical in turning the SDG agenda from a global vision into a reality and hence If India wishes to the get anywhere close to the targets of these goals then it has to fundamentally look at its functioning
