Summer Sadhu

It’s here. A gift from Mother Earth. Most people wouldn’t consider this a gift and don’t like it when it arrives. I’ve been looking forward to it for months. Awaiting its arrival. It’s not wrapped and doesn’t come in neat boxes. It is a state of being, arriving slowly and then suddenly, here it is, in full force. This lovely gift is finally here. Today. The first day of this year hitting a temperature of 90 degrees. What gift did you think I was talking about?

The temps are expected to go up as the week progresses. While others are complaining, I’m rejoicing. I’m heading outside to dance in the hot breeze. The swelter suits me. I’m celebrating the return of summer in June, leading to the lovely July kind of heat. Skin sizzling, throat seeking moisture, time moving slowly. Any piece of clothing you wear wants to cling to you like a child.

Bring it on. When that first heat wave of the summer hits, like the Earth releasing its held inner breath, the sun pounding us self-proclaimed rulers of the planet into submission, my bones finally thaw fully from the previous winter. They loosen and embrace the warmth, absorb it and store it away for the inevitable return of winter and its doldrums. This gift keeps giving for weeks. By the time I get too hot, most other people have passed out.

A midnight sky full of July stars is for me the most spiritual time. The skies seem brighter with starlight, fireworks alight the country’s birthday and other celebrations, and the woods twinkle with fireflies’ happiness.

The bookends, spring and fall, are gorgeous, of course, but summer is the true body and the soul. Every winter I look forward to its humid charms. Winter should come with a fast forward button.

I emerge from my shell and turn into my sadhu avatar during this mid-year season. In Hinduism, sadhus are ascetic men, spiritual beings, monks. They have separated from worldly desires and given up material needs. They become nomads, teachers, seekers.

From Chiptunes to Classics

The Evolution of Video Game Music

Some years ago, I broached the subject of video games being considered art. I mentioned how they’ve dramatically changed over the years, and since that article was released many have grown to be even more intricate. I feel it’s only fitting to also mention that similar to film scores… a game’s soundtrack should act as a fitting accompaniment to their engaging stories, beloved characters, enjoyable mechanics, and breathtaking visuals.

For decades, video game music wasn’t highly regarded as anything other than background noise. Similar to early film scores, many composers looked upon game soundtracks as a side project or hobby. Yet the cultural and economic growth of this medium has proven to be so much more, to the point that some of these artists have since achieved iconic status due to their work on video game soundtracks.

We’ve come a long way from the signature beeps heard while tapping a small square back and forth across the screen in Pong. Even early Pinball machines only thought about attracting those with coins burning in their pockets by means of flashy lights and colorful displays. Yet that would change in 1978 by means of a 4note progression which harks to a similar 2-note one from a certain summer blockbuster film about a shark released a few years prior.

Designer Tomohiro Nishikado created the musical theme for Space Invaders but due to a code fluke the notes would gradually speed up as descending aliens crept closer to the bottom. These increasingly heart-pounding thumps created a sense of urgency that would eventually help Invaders become one of the most iconic arcade games of all time.

Next came Japan’s Nintendo, who was the first gaming company to hire a full-time music composer. Koji Kondo would go on to create, among many others, two of the most beloved and familiar themes in gaming history with the main themes for Super Mario Bros. and The Legend of Zelda. Both of these have become so recognizable that even non-gamers will perk up just by hearing the first few notes.

Japan would continue to develop new game tracks which would, despite the limited hardware at the time, create these amazing pieces. Castlevania: Symphony of the Night, Silent Hill 2, Street Fighter II, Sonic: The Hedgehog, and Chrono Trigger among other games from the 1990’s included works which combined various genres of music… from rock to jazz to tribal drumbeats in order to create those perfect sounds as your tiny character spite travelled from map to map.

However, there was one composer who stood above the rest. Nobuo Uematsu, a self-taught composer and keyboardist, whom to date has created music for almost every Final Fantasy game since the first released in 1987. Some of his most memorable pieces appear in 6 (“The Dancing Mad” Suite), 7 (“One Winged Angel”), and 8 (“Liberi Fatali”). He’s often been called the “John Williams of the video game world” due to his diverse styles which range from baroque organ music to heavy metal. Simply put… without Uematsu, the medium would not be nearly as appreciated as it is today.

Other soundtracks would follow, but then in 2005 a little-known artist by the name of Christoper Tin was asked by his former college roommate to compose the main theme for Civilization IV. That became “Baba Yetu,” a choral Swahili version of “The Lord’s Prayer.” Beyond its widespread praise amongst the video game community, Tin’s composition also became the first video game song to win a Grammy Award for Best

The Year of the Composition

Stages

Kismuth and the Way II

An artist might ask another artist, bluntly, What is the theme of your work? One day, at a particular plateau of your creative life, you will be able to tell them. (This is what I hear.) Directly, honestly, and clearly: there will be no wavering. You will not doubt yourself.

But getting to that place will take time. You will have written and rewritten countless drafts of the ‘bio’, or ‘artist statement’, and you will have wondered if maybe you should put more this or more that into it. But your gut will know where you are headed because you will have spent time on this question about finding out the theme of your work, the why of your creative output efforts. (A lot of time.)

Getting to this plateau upon which you have found your clarity of intent will undoubtedly mean you will have passed some crazy tests of your commitment to making. Earlier stages, that is, in which you come to understand both the bitter and sweet sides of the creative process, and similarly, those aspects of a lifelong effort to make more and better, as in more artful compositions. A major one of these preceding stages, I believe, is experience. Meaning, simply having been through and observed a lot in the world and thereby accumulating many moments of ups and downs in life and also meeting enough people to see many sides of many stories. Self-awareness, you could call it, in a word.

I am perhaps one of the luckiest music aficionados as I met many musicians and singers from all parts of India during my younger days and got to know them in person. Main reason for meeting them is to understand each singer, and even though I am a Gujarati and don’t understand their languages. I also combine my love for music with love for photography, which they appreciate.

S. P. Balasubrahmanyam, known as SP by his friends, was one of South India’s legendary singers who achieved pinnacle of singing like Mohammad Rafi and Kishore Kumar. I was fortunate to spend a few days with SP and another great singer, P. Susheela in 1979 during his first concert in America and videotaped four of his concerts, a rare feat at that time. Susheela’s husband who is a doctor, had also come with her.

Three entrepreneurs from Kerala, Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh had just started an organization called

You’re Low-IQ? I So Like You!

Thinking About Thinking

“I know that I am intelligent, because I know that I know nothing.”

IQ is an obsession that possesses the human animal.

Intelligence can be a wonderful thing that promotes life … if it is aligned with life. But if it is aligned with something else, then it promotes whatever that other thing is. Whatever that thing is divided by intelligence produces a quotient. And a remainder. The remainder is the part of your intelligence that is dedicated to the things that are ignored by your intelligence. Unfortunately, that thing could be life itself. And so, as with many other things, “intelligence”, the word, displaces the thing that that it was intended to be; it could even end up promoting the very opposite of what you hope it does!

The

math of life

A child is born into life. With something very powerful, but which cannot be called “intelligence” because that word has been co-opted to point to something that is the very antithesis of intelligence. And has concepts built on top of it, such as “IQ”. So, what should we call this gift of life that we are born with, and innate to us, a gift that we fail to value? We might finesse the currently indoctrinated word by prefixing it with a measuring adjective that pulls it in the opposite direction, diminishing it rather than extolling it.

A Room with a View: Low IQ

If I could rid my mind of thing: this high IQ,

Then the notes of life might trill through me: the song that’s true,

That I might part from the living dead: to a room with a view …

That shows no numbers, words and stuff: no gobbledygook, But those Gates open only to those: with low IQ.

The wordplay is nice but how does all this translate to something that will make a difference? The answer may lie in the math behind the words, “low” and “high”. If the container has a low amount of something, maybe it has space for more of something else? Something more enriching than depleting?

Grooving with Bhakti and Geriatric Grace

Raajeev’s Corner by Raajeev Aggerwhil

As I mentioned in my previous column, I wrote about the comments that we have been getting on our social media accounts @Mr.CheapGupta. My wife and I started making dance videos and posting on Instagram and YouTube. Nothing wild—just two grown adults having a little fun, shaking a leg, and occasionally pulling a hamstring.

I also mentioned that some people in India have urged me to do more Bhakti and focus my time on reciting God’s name. Apparently, dancing doesn’t count as Bhakti—unless you’re doing the Nataraja pose mid-Bollywood beat! Recently, one of my Toastmasters friends in his 30’s saw the dance videos and he asked, “Where do I get all this energy from?” Which, in energy years, makes me roughly… a rechargeable battery!

In my discussion with my spiritual master, Shri Tarneiv Ji, I commented on this surge of energy since we started posting the dance videos. We discussed that, generally after age 40-45, body and mind decline. That’s when Google search history starts including “Best back pain patches” and “Where did I leave my glasses?” My Guruji explained that our belief is that God is eternal and omnipresent. So, there is a myth that after 50, God is not there. That belief becomes a superstition, kind of a blind belief and fueled by orthodox thinking. He then brought a rhetorical question. “Why do we take God’s name after a certain age, that too mostly in the middle age?” The thinking is that our next life will be better.

Also, with Bhakti, we get Shakti (inner strength) to create a mental state for euphoria – that everything is good inside. Again, this is despite when body is getting weaker and older. In the last 2-3 years, there has been more emphasis on rejuvenation. As Shri Tarneiv Ji explains, after 50, we become

Summer Foods and Drinks Summer Foods and Drinks

Nutrition for Life by

• Reduce hot foods and drinks, pungent spices, and fried and oily foods

As the temperatures climb, the heat affects our digestion and our temperament. We need to eat food that cools the body.

Ayurveda offers an important concept called “Ritucharya” - a guide for creating a balanced routine according to the seasons. Just as each person has their own nature or dosha, similarly, each season is also associated with its own energy or dosha. During summer months, the Pitta dosha is prominent. Pitta is hot and sharp, so we need to balance those qualities with foods that are cool and bland.

A similar concept exists in traditional Chinese Medicine, where foods are categorized based on their energies. Foods are classified as either heating, cooling, drying or damp. Balancing these energetic properties is important for preserving health and preventing disease.

Let us look at some foods that are cooling, and thus beneficial during the hot summer months.

Tips for summer

• Eat more salads and raw vegetables

• Include more leafy greens and herbs

• Add foods that have more water content such as cucumber, celery, and bitter vegetables

• Include sweet & pulpy fruits such as watermelon, berries, pomegranate, mango, and banana

• Limit excess salt and high sodium foods as they may make you more dehydrated

• Eliminate/limit chemical food additives and alcohol

• Include cooling drinks such as coconut water, and water flavored with lime/lemon, mint and basil

• Use spices such as cumin, coriander, and fennel, which are cooling

• Choose easier to digest and cooling grains like Barley (Jau/Jav), Finger Millet (Ragi), Sorghum (Jowar), Barnyard Millet (Sama). Millets can help protect from heat exhaustion, migraines and sunstrokes

• Choose easier to digest legumes such as mung and moth; choose more sprouts

• Drink room temperature or slightly cooler water, but avoid drinking ice cold beverages as that can disturb normal digestion

Fennel Mint Infused Wsater

Sip on this refreshing drink to beat the heat!

Start by heating 4 cups of water in a saucepan. Add a handful of mint leaves. Once the water comes to a boil, take it off the heat and let it cool.

In a jar or your water bottle, add 1 teaspoon of fennel seeds. You can add slices of cucumber and/or lime.

Strain the cooled water into the bottle. Add some fresh mint leaves for extra taste. Add a couple of ice cubes if needed.

Step Out of Your Comfort Zone

Eye on the Markets

Since the pandemic, the primary driver of markets has been fiscal policy. This is a departure from the Great Financial Crisis before the pandemic, when low rates and quantitative easing drove markets. More than $5 trillion was added to the economy, and this money continues to circulate post-pandemic. DOGE, budget cuts, a smaller government, and tariffs would have all served to reduce this fiscal stimulus.

Most of these policies have since been reversed, allowing the market to recover. DOGE cuts may be somewhere in the billions, from the $1-$2 trillion expected a few months ago. Tariffs have been delayed or reduced. The administration has pivoted from reducing the GDP ratio to expanding our way out of it. The Treasury Secretary said, “…if we change the growth trajectory of the country, of the economy, then we will stabilize our finances and grow our way out of this.”

The “Big Beautiful Bill” is the centerpiece of this. The deficit already is tracking ahead of last year and the Bill, as currently proposed, will add another $2.75 trillion to the deficit according to the Wall Street Journal. The Bill is expected to boost GDP to 5.2%, according to the Council of Economic Advisers. While this estimate may be aggressive, the Bill is meant to be immediately stimulative to the economy through tax cuts and incentives. While many are positioned to expect a recession, the passing of this Bill will lead to an economic reacceleration. Look no further than the steepening yield curve and industrials hitting an all-time high to notice the market sniffing this out.

The key to growing out of a high deficit to GDP ratio is that inflation and yields don’t spike. This strategy aims to keep short-end rates and oil prices low and allow the Treasury to continue issuing there. This will keep interest expense from exploding higher. The Fed will likely be on hold throughout the summer and if the Bill passes, it will remain on hold for the remainder of the year. The administration will appoint a new Fed Chair next year, perhaps with a change in mandate.

Classical Dances

More than an Entertainment

Dances of India by

In recent days, most classical dances are seen as entertainment. Very seldom are people able to tap into the deeper meaning of classical dances. Nobody is to blame for this change. We as teachers have the responsibility to shape the outlook of our audiences and perceptions of students. In a global world with technologies engulfing our lives, most kids are expecting to be entertained at all times, otherwise, they are bored.

To keep them busy, parents enroll them into music lessons, dance classes and sports.

We need to teach them the importance of commitment, benefits of personal enrichment, health and fitness, an opportunity to learn Indian epics and literature to keep traditions alive. I define tradition as something continuously handed from one generation to the other. In performing arts, dance is a gift given by the teachers to their students. We call it “guru shishya parampara”.

It is definitely an opportunity to bestow immeasurable stream of wisdom, serene and concrete knowledge.

As I pondered on this subject, so many thoughts and benefits of these classical dance forms came to my mind. They were invented thousands of years ago with our body, mind and soul as the central focus. I want to share a few of the psychosomatic benefits.

Spiritual Benefit: As I always say, “Dance is a prayer in motion”. It is always my dancing that gives me a sense of happiness and peace. Students who have graduated from my dance school say the same thing to me each time they visit me. For thousands of years, the performing arts in India have been a form of religious expression. It is an expression of spiritual energy. This blend of religion with classical dances has continued to exist through the centuries. I strongly urge all students to practice at home and make it their temple/church. Let the family be the audience, which is a rare opportunity for the family to enjoy the growth of their children.

Benefits of Hand Movements: Many of us are using our computers, phones, and laptops all day. This repetitive movement can cause harm to our fingers in the long run. You may end up with inflammation in your joints or even

So You’re Gonna Die – Now What? Part 2

Financially Speaking by

This article is a continuation of the topic we started last month– discussing one’s mortality i.e. death and transferring wealth to intended parties as a way of continuing one’s legacy.

As a quick refresher, I introduced concepts such as Estate, Probate and Wills. To get your head around this concept, Estate is the ‘What’ and Probate is the ‘How’.

In essence, an estate is the collection of assets, and probate is the legal procedure used to manage and distribute those assets after a person dies. The process usually begins when an interested party (often the named executor in a will, or a family member if there’s no will) files a petition with the probate court where the deceased lived. This process is administered by the state court. An executor is appointed to manage the estate. If there’s no will, the court appoints an Administrator, usually a close family member, according to state law. The Administrator or Executor identifies, gathers, and values all of the deceased person’s assets such as real estate, bank accounts, investments, personal property, and any other valuables. The role of an administrator/executor also includes the following duties: Paying Debts and Taxes: Valid debts (like mortgages, credit card bills, medical expenses) and final taxes (income and estate taxes, if applicable) are paid from the estate’s assets.

Distributing Remaining Assets: Once all debts, taxes, and probate expenses are settled, the personal representative distributes the remaining assets to the beneficiaries (heirs) as outlined in the will, or according to state intestacy laws if there is no will.

Closing the Estate: Once distributions are complete and approved by the court, the personal representative files a final accounting and petitions the court to formally close the estate.

Probate laws are state-specific, meaning the process can look quite different depending on where the deceased resided and where their property is located. Thus, what works in North Carolina may not necessarily be true for another state.

Speaking of what’s in the estate, there are probate and on-probate estates. Probate assets are those that specifically must go through the probate court process to be legally transferred to beneficiaries. They include property owned solely by the deceased and bank accounts in the deceased’s name alone.

Non-Probate Assets are also part of the deceased’s overall “estate” in a general sense, but they are structured in a way that allows them to bypass the formal probate process and transfer directly to beneficiaries such as:

• Those assets that transfer directly to the designated beneficiary upon the owner’s death without going through the probate court. Common examples include: Life insurance proceeds, Retirement accounts (like 401(k)s, IRAs), Bank accounts or brokerage accounts with a “Payable on Death” (POD) or “Transfer on Death” (TOD) designation.

• Property transferred into a living trust (or revocable trust) before the owner’s death bypasses probate because the trust legally owns the assets. The trustee then distributes the assets according to the trust’s terms.

• Property owned jointly with “right of survivorship” where the deceased owner’s share automatically passes to the surviving joint owner(s) outside of probate.

As we’ve seen, when a person passes away, their assets are administered through one of two main pathways: either through the probate process or directly through a trust

The Advice Monster Strikes Again: But What If We’re the Problem

You know that feeling when you just have to share your newest, world-changing piece of advice? It’s like you’ve discovered the cure for all of humanity’s ills, and now you must spread the word. Trust me, I get it. After my last piece on Bakwaas (unsolicited advice, for the uninitiated), so many of you messaged me saying, “Yaar, I’ve been that person!” And honestly, we’ve all been there. You read some interesting facts, have a mini epiphany, and suddenly feel the need to inform the world. Because obviously, you’ve figured it all out, and everyone else needs to know, immediately.

But then, disaster strikes. Someone doesn’t listen. And what do we do? Oh, we don’t give up. Oh no. We go full

force: speak louder, quote some random research, maybe even throw in some Sanskrit for dramatic effect, and, of course, we top it off with, “Main to tumko bola, ab tumhe karna hai to karo (I have told you what to do and now it’s up to you)”. And then, after all that, we leave them with a nice, heavy dose of advice... and a side of guilt for not taking it. Because clearly, we’re right, and they’re wrong, right? Right?

But here’s the real question—who’s actually benefiting here?

Do they care? Do we care about them enough to really know what they need? Is our advice going to change their life, or are we just feeding our own ego by proving that we

How Artificial Intelligence Controls Your Health Insurance Coverage

How Artificial Intelligence Controls Your Health Insurance Coverage

Over the past decade, health insurance companies have increasingly embraced the use of artificial intelligence algorithms. Unlike doctors and hospitals, which use AI to help diagnose and treat patients, health insurers use these algorithms to decide whether to pay for health care treatments and services that are recommended by a given patient’s physicians.

One of the most common examples is prior authorization, which is when your doctor needs to receive payment approval from your insurance company before providing you care. Many insurers use an algorithm to decide whether the requested care is “medically necessary” and should be covered.

These AI systems also help insurers decide how much care a patient is entitled to — for example, how many days of hospital care a patient can receive after surgery. If an insurer declines to pay for a treatment your doctor recommends, you usually have three options. You can try to appeal the decision, but that process can take a lot of time,

money and expert help. Only 1 in 500 claim denials are appealed. You can agree to a different treatment that your insurer will cover. Or you can pay for the recommended treatment yourself, which is often not realistic because of high health care costs.

As a legal scholar who studies health law and policy, I’m concerned about how insurance algorithms affect people’s health. Like with AI algorithms used by doctors and hospitals, these tools can potentially improve care and reduce costs. Insurers say that AI helps them make quick, safe decisions about what care is necessary and avoids wasteful or harmful treatments.

But there’s strong evidence that the opposite can be true. These systems are sometimes used to delay or deny care that should be covered, all in the name of saving money.

A pattern of withholding care

Presumably, companies feed a patient’s health care records and other relevant information into health care

The World’s Highest Railway Bridge Opens in Kashmir

India’s Prime Minister inaugurated the Chenab Bridge and Bridge Deck, in Jammu and Kashmir on June 6, 2025. It is now the world’s tallest railway bridge with trains crossing it at the height of 1,178 feet. The bridge towers over the Chenab River in India and is located in the Reasi District.

The Chenab Rail Bridge’s completion links Kashmir to the rest of India via railway for the first time. It is a steel and concrete structure stretching 4,314 feet across the Chenab River gorge. Its main deck is raised 1,178 feet above the riverbed, making it both the highest rail bridge and the tallest arch bridge on the planet.

Its opening coincided with the launch of the new Vande Bharat Express trains on the Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla Rail Link. The bridge is engineered to withstand earthquakes up to magnitude 8 and wind speeds up to 165 mph. The government expects the bridge’s completion to help stimulate tourism and improve mobility for industry, agriculture and trade.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi, speaking at the inauguration event, said: “The Tricolour flies high over the Chenab Rail Bridge! It’s a feeling of immense pride that this bridge seamlessly blends ambition with execution, reflecting India’s growing capability to build futuristic infrastructure in the most challenging terrains.”

India Expected to Conclude Long-Awaited Census by March 2027

India’s decennial population census, significantly delayed by the COVID-19 pandemic and other logistical challenges, is now slated for completion by March 1, 2027. The interior ministry recently announced that the massive data collection exercise would be conducted in two phases.

The start date for the first phase of the census is expected to commence in April 2026.

This upcoming census holds particular significance as India officially surpassed China as the world’s most populous nation in mid-2023, according to projections from the UN Population Fund.

Adding another layer of importance, the census will also collect details on citizens’ caste affiliations. This will be the first time caste data has been recorded in an Indian census since 2011. That year the information was collected but not publicly released due to concerns regarding its accuracy. The inclusion of caste details could provide insights into the country’s demographic and socio-economic landscape.

NIH Researchers Develop Biomarker Score for Predicting Diets High in Ultra-processed Foods

For the first time, researchers at the National Institutes of Health (NIH) identified patterns of metabolites in blood and urine that can be used as an objective measure of an individual’s consumption of energy from ultra-processed foods. Metabolites are left after the body converts food into energy, a process known as metabolism. Scientists used these data to develop a score based on multiple metabolites, known as a poly-metabolite score, that has the potential to reduce the reliance on, or complement the use of, selfreported dietary data in large population studies. The findings appeared May 20, 2025, in PLOS Medicine.

“Limitations of self-reported diet are well known. Metabolomics provides an exciting opportunity to not only improve our methods for objectively measuring complex exposures like diet and intake of ultra-processed foods, but also to understand the mechanisms by which diet might be impacting health,” said lead investigator Erikka Loftfield, Ph.D., M.P.H., of NIH’s National Cancer Institute.

Diets high in ultra-processed foods, which are defined as ready-to-eat or ready-to-heat, industrially manufactured products, typically high in calories and low in essential nutrients, have been linked to increased risk of obesity and related chronic diseases, including some types of cancer. Large population studies quantifying the health effects of ultraprocessed foods typically rely on self-reported data from dietary questionnaires. Such measures may be subject to differences in reporting and may not account for changes in the food supply over time. As a result of this study, researchers now have an objective measure of ultraprocessed food intake to help advance the study of associations between ultra-processed foods and health outcomes.

The researchers found hundreds of metabolites that correlated with the percentage of energy from ultraprocessed foods in the diet. Using machine learning, researchers identified metabolic patterns associated with high intake of ultra-processed foods and calculated polymetabolite scores for blood and urine separately.

coverage algorithms and compare that information with current medical standards of care to decide whether to cover the patient’s claim. However, insurers have refused to disclose how these algorithms work in making such decisions, so it is impossible to say exactly how they operate in practice.

Using AI to review coverage saves insurers time and resources, especially because it means fewer medical professionals are needed to review each case. But the financial benefit to insurers doesn’t stop there. If an AI system quickly denies a valid claim, and the patient appeals, that appeal process can take years.

If the patient is seriously ill and expected to die soon, the insurance company might save money simply by dragging out the process in the hope that the patient dies before the case is resolved.

This creates the disturbing possibility that insurers might use algorithms to withhold care for expensive, long-term or terminal health problems, such as chronic or other debilitating disabilities.

One reporter put it bluntly: “Many older adults who spent their lives paying into Medicare now face amputation or cancer and are forced to either pay for care themselves or go without.”

Research supports this concern – patients with chronic illnesses are more likely to be denied coverage and suffer as a result. In addition, Black and Hispanic people and those of other nonwhite ethnicities, as well as people who identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual or transgender, are more likely to experience claims denials. Some evidence also suggests that prior authorization may increase rather than decrease health care system costs.

Insurers argue that patients can always pay for any treatment themselves, so they’re not really being denied care. But this argument ignores reality. These decisions have serious health consequences, especially when people can’t afford the care they need.

Moving toward regulation

Unlike medical algorithms, insurance AI tools are largely unregulated. They don’t have to go through Food and Drug Administration review, and insurance companies often say their algorithms are trade secrets.

That means there’s no public information about how these tools make decisions, and there’s no outside testing to see whether they’re safe, fair or effective. No peer-reviewed studies exist to show how well they actually work in the real world.

There does seem to be some momentum for change. The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services, or CMS, which is the federal agency in charge of Medicare and Medicaid, recently announced that insurers in Medicare Advantage plans must base decisions on the needs of individual patients – not just on generic criteria. But these rules still let insurers create their own decision-making standards, and they still don’t require any outside testing to prove their systems work before using them.

Plus, federal rules can only regulate federal public health programs like Medicare. They do not apply to private insurers who do not provide federal health program coverage.

Some states, including Colorado, Georgia, Florida, Maine and Texas, have proposed laws to rein in insurance AI. A few have passed new laws, including a 2024 California statute that requires a licensed physician to supervise the use of insurance coverage algorithms.

But most state laws suffer from the same weaknesses as the new CMS rule. They leave too much control in the hands of insurers to decide how to define “medical necessity” and in what contexts to use algorithms for coverage decisions. They also don’t require those algorithms to be reviewed by neutral experts before use. And even strong state laws wouldn’t be enough, because states generally can’t regulate Medicare or insurers that operate outside their borders.

A role for the FDA

In the view of many health law experts, the gap between insurers’ actions and patient needs has become so wide that regulating health care coverage algorithms is now imperative. As I argue in an essay to be published in the Indiana Law Journal, the FDA is well positioned to do so.

The FDA is staffed with medical experts who have the capability to evaluate insurance algorithms before they are used to make coverage decisions. The agency already reviews many medical AI tools for safety and effectiveness. FDA oversight would also provide a uniform, national regulatory scheme instead of a patchwork of rules across the country.

Some people argue that the FDA’s power here is limited. For the purposes of FDA regulation, a medical device is defined as an instrument “intended for use in the diagnosis of disease or other conditions, or in the cure, mitigation, treatment, or prevention of disease.” Because health insurance algorithms are not used to diagnose, treat or prevent disease, Congress may need to amend the definition of a medical device before the FDA can regulate those algorithms.

If the FDA’s current authority isn’t enough to cover insurance algorithms, Congress could change the law to give it that power. Meanwhile, CMS and state governments could require independent testing of these algorithms for safety, accuracy and fairness. That might also push insurers to support a single national standard – like FDA regulation – instead of facing a patchwork of rules across the country.

The move toward regulating how health insurers use AI in determining coverage has clearly begun, but it is still awaiting a robust push. Patients’ lives are literally on the line.

American Dance Festival 2025

American Dance Festival (ADF)’s 2025 season has begun, and I invite Saathee readers to try it out, if contemporary dance is something new to you, or return to continue to enjoy what you have already discovered. There are 40 performances by 22 dance companies and choreographers from near and far.

The opening show, Dancing with Bob: Rauschenberg, Brown, and Cunningham Onstage with Special Guests Paul Taylor Dance Company featured well established dances by Trisha Brown, Merce Cunningham, and Paul Taylor celebrating their influences by pioneering visual artist Robert Rauschenberg.

As interesting as the first show was, I was even more moved by Passion Fruit Dance Company and their performance called DIM3NSIONS. In the question-answer period after the dance, artistic director and choreographer Tatiana Desardouin described what I had witnessed as nonnarrative probing styles like hip hop, house, and break, seeking spirituality within the style through not just the choreography but the setting.

I am a fan of the Avant Garde and enjoyed years ago Laurie Anderson’s Alive from Off Center series on public television; some of the music in this show was from her as well as other notable visionaries like music pioneer John Cage. I found it interesting how one prop, a bicycle wheel rim, was used in two dances by different choreographers.

The setting was an immersive “projection mapping”. I hadn’t heard or seen anything like this; distorted video of objects including outlines of the dancers formed the backdrop and added a layer of dimensionality once, for example, including dancer forms which jumped out of the background as if to animate the actual dancers. Huiyi Chen, the one responsible, shared in the discussion how careful she was to use this tool to supplement but not overpower the strong dancers. The collaboration among the dancers, projection mapping, animation, and sound was done with folks geographically dispersed and accomplished over 3-4 years.

The result was remarkable. Everything about it was compelling – the strength of the dancers, the interplay

prisoners to our thoughts and belief patterns. The older you get, the deeper you get inside that prison. We become shackled by our old thinking. This phenomenon may not apply to everyone. Some people remain unconditionally happy and that is wonderful. However, for others, if by introspection, we realize that the joy of life is missing, it means something needs to change. Are we open to inviting a change in our life? Are we open to unshackle the old belief that we will be dull after a certain age, or do we prefer to remain in solitary confinement with nothing but relive the reruns of your own regrets?

Unfortunately, this old belief has become socially acceptable, and we inculcate it in our inner conscience. From our Guruji’s lectures, I have learnt that if Buddha or Nanak were able to realize that happiness, it means we have the capability to in our body to achieve that. However, we haven’t fully explored it. The goal of Bhakti is to bring in Shakti which ultimately brings Kranti (a revolution) to take on all the challenges of life.

People don’t slow aging just because they are eating organic food. Yes, eating healthy food helps, but there are people who smoke, drink and eat mostly junk food but they remain energetic well into their 80’s. The secret ingredient is verve — verve for life, which is much larger than life’s goal. That verve comes from a strong belief that we are contributing to society and that belief makes you enthusiastic about yourself. Some may get this enthusiasm a little from masala chai and WhatsApp wisdom memes but those may be ephemeral!

That brings back to my wife’s and my dances on @Mr.CheapGupta. I am not trying to toot my own horn, but what my wife and I are doing is a testimony of that new thinking. We believe that we have the agility that people can see through dances. It’s not just the agility of the body but the agility of the mind.

Our body is flexible because our mind is flexible. Our mind is flexible because our mind is open to new thinking –trying out new activities, some of them crazy as dancing to Bollywood songs in our middle age without proper training. Even as earlier as 3 years ago, my self-consciousness prevented me from dancing and truly enjoying myself at Indian wedding parties.

Yes, my best dance move was avoiding the dance floor altogether! We were able to overcome this barrier with the encouragement and guidance from our Guruji and openness of our minds.

Most people over 45, place “being energetic” on a high pedestal but don’t know how they can be in that state. If our dances serve as an example to others, we have achieved our goal. People as they grow older reminisce about their youth, how they used to dance or have so much fun. In their middle age they shun the idea and feel they cannot do those fun activities as they are not age appropriate. Through our dances, our happiness and unbridled joy is visible on our faces.

We are a testimony to that openness, and we are willing to share and inspire others. Yes, that’s joy — not just sore knees from the last Bhangra spin!

As Guruji mentions in his lectures, freedom of spirit is important. What spirit is saying is called “Inspiration.” Our goal of our art is to present our dances and comedy in a way where it inspires people. Each time we do a crazy dance, people who know us must wonder what happened to us, what caused the transformation in our lives and why do we have that euphoric feeling visible on our faces throughout the day. The secret formula, as shared by our Guruji in his lectures, is that God is creative. When we fully immerse ourselves in creative pursuits—be it singing, dancing, painting, or writing—we align with the Divine and discover true joy.

Some may see a middle-aged couple doing crazy dance moves and may comment, “Buddhe budhiya ko jawani aa rahi hai (The old couple is getting intoxicated with youth.)” We see our actions as a testimony of openness of our minds, unshackling the rigid belief patterns and trying to align our spirit with God. The result is the nimbleness of the mind which causes a nimbleness of the body. Essentially, that openness not only has wiped out dullness, but created a lot of inner happiness, allowing ourselves to inspire other people like us. That formula translates to: Oldies but goldies doing cardio disguised as choreography! Or as we like to call it: Geriatric Jhatkas with a Message!

From these moments, you will know more precisely, through trial-and-error learning, where you feel at ease and where you get stuck. I’m not suggesting taking the path of least resistance, or anything, just saying that I believe you will know yourself better if you’ve gone out and tried more than one job, say. Or internship. Or state. You know what I mean? We go around a little bit and we pick up things, sense things, and learn a lot more I think when we are out and about than if we opt to stay in one place.

Notably, apart from the naysayers that will (consciously or unconsciously) aim to discourage, there will be mentors. These folks will encourage and guide, and they will show you how to discover your own way. Specifically, to find your ‘why.’ Why do you want to say something with your chosen medium of art? Of course, you will need to experiment, and a lot. There are no guarantees, either, of getting the answers. Besides that, in a productivity-obsessed culture, it takes a great deal of mental energy to separate the thing you do for everyday earnings from the search for why which will inform the what you wish to make with art.

‘Play with it,’ the best leaders, friends, and guides will say. ‘Keep going with that,’ they’ll share, in the way of feedback. It’s good to have them in your corner. It’s a kind of stage, too, one in which we get to know who is rooting for us (and who is not). We all have creativity and the capacity to make cool things. You don’t need external validations to start trying small experiments and seeing what works. It’s a remarkable, iterative process. It fuels itself when the momentum is good. It’s good when you know what you’re trying to do, which means, naturally, blocking time and getting to know yourself, and, as such, getting closer to the you of you. It takes real commitment, and effort, but it’s important, for the art to come. The art that will land with people who are ready to receive it.

Why? You will have learned where your strengths lie, and you will have developed a capacity to say ‘yes’ and to equally know when to say ‘no.’ Is this moving me towards my goal? Does it check with my why? Is it going to be dramatic, draining, exhausting, fulfilling, extraordinary, painful, bright, disparaging, or curious? In short, Is this in my best interests? Does it grow me, or diminish my attempts to grow?

Nothing is for sure, but your gut instincts are going to be there when everything else is confusing. The gut knows; it’s been there while you’ve gone through the stages of discerning, discovering, and designing the intention and determining the kind of art you want to leave in this world. Speaking of which, then, there’s the final stage. Sharing it. If you’re lucky, people will tell you why they connect with it. Learn something from that; don’t pander, just let it come back after you let go of your work. We who are curious, are open, are waiting, and are ready, are here in the audience you will meet, to greet your art. And you: the you that knows you and knows why you choose to make. See you there.

The I of the storm

Maybe? … Be full of your self: your “I”? Be filled with the “I” that you were born with. It is important to realize that this is a very different kind of “I”, very unlike the much more complicated and convoluted “I” that has usurped the throne from its rightful owner.

As the raging storms of words, numbers, and the “logic” cobbled together from this detritus, swirl menacingly and destructively all around you, the “I” of the storm is the calmest and safest place in your existence. The nice thing about it is that it came with the package. You may have just failed to notice it or to appreciate its existence, and its value to your existence.

How do you know if you are in the “I” of the storm? Some clues are in the words you use, words like heart, soul, art, love, etc. It can also be felt in a deep sense of engagement in what you do, whether it be a fine crafting of your creation in a woodshop, a soulful rendition of a piece of music, or a deeper connection with a soulmate. There are no words in this space; there is just a “being-in” state that is beyond such meaningless symbols and artifacts.

It is a higher life. But it is not easy to attain when all around you are words, words and more words!

When they go high, you go low

The words are okay. They don’t cause damage if you let them flow past you, as most of them will. And those that don’t will bounce off your magic shield that lets in only real things. But all this will be so, only if you have developed an immunity to the mirages that the words create: mirages that you end up actually feeling viscerally, invoking deep-seated fears and desires intended for your survival.

When you drop the words, a whole slew of things suddenly drops from your consciousness. Just imagine, e.g., if you didn’t have a word for “virus”, or “cholesterol”, and, therefore, no notion of such things. Imagine if you are skeptical that the idea of “cause” and “effect” is too simple, and often just high-IQ stuff that causes you to look for clear paths to diminish fears that themselves may be based on little more than empty word-castles that are built in the air in the same way that others have built them.

Admittedly, it is hard to be low-IQ when most of the others around you are high-IQ. It is easy to fall into the trap of symbol-based “thinking” as a habit – even an addiction –that causes you to use the words in ways that distract and detract from life. And from love.

High IQ is not without its uses, in day-to-day life, e.g., to make a living, do Sudoku, and calculus gymnastics. The world values it just as it values diamonds. But it can cut like a diamond too and cause bleeding, when used, say, for arguing to prove that you are “right”, or to create dangerous monsters that you start to fear. These can be pyrrhic victories for a high-IQ person.

Low-IQ people are rare. Can you be one?

amongst the dancers themselves as well as the soundtrack and projection. In one 90-minute “take” the energy never seemed to fade much even in transitions from what essentially were scenes.

At press time, this is all I’ve seen but already the season leaves an indelible mark in my memory. There are many performances remaining for the season.

Some of the performances that I am most looking forward to are by Pilobolus, always a crowd-pleaser with accessible dances of remarkable humor and artistry. June 20th and 21st (in between press time and publication, so this

will have passed by the time you read this) they will be presenting four dances, Particle Zoo, Bloodlines, Lamenation Variations, and Rushes, several of which I’ve seen in years past. Lamentation Variations is inspired by Martha Graham’s Lamentation and premiered on September 11, 2007, upon the anniversary of 9/11.

I’m sad that I will have to miss How to be a Visitor by Tommy Noonan, Jassem Hindi, and Frank Mugisha / Culture Mill. Most of the ADF performances are on the Duke Campus in auditoriums like Reynolds and Page, but some, like this one, are in the intimate von der Heyden Studio Theater. The dance will be livestreamed to several locations including France and Uganda to create a shared experience.

Ballet Hispánico is a troupe that has presented wellloved performances for years and this year they are interpreting Bizet’s Carmen opera in their CARMEN.maquia. I’ve read that the opera will be interpreted with flamenco and ballet set in a minimalistic stage.

The American Dance Festival Website has details on all the events, including ticketing. Fin it at Americandancefestival.org. It offers something for varied tastes and ages, including children. If you are on BlueSky, I will post about the shows and performances @dbarman.

ADF runs through July 26, 2025, in Durham, NC.

another song he mimicked Rafi Saheb’s “yahoo” from film Junglee. A 12-year-old tabla player named Raju was the main attraction in that concert and SP had given him time to showcase his talent.

Needless to say, Susheela’s melodious voice was out of this world. I called her Lata Mangeshkar of South India, which she appreciated very much; because just like Lataji, Susheela reads lyrics from a little book and hardly looks at the audience or shows any expressions while singing, unlike modern singers who do more acting than singing.

I had accompanied SP & Susheela to their three concerts in Philadelphia and Washington D.C. area over the following weekend. Upon return, we had another concert in New York because of high demand. By that time, we had become friends, and I also had dinners with them.

At this second concert in New York songs of other South Indian languages were also included.

This was a memorable concert because while they were setting up sound, the keyboard malfunctioned and the concert was in jeopardy.

However, it was saved because somebody had to pick up my accordion from my apartment in New Jersey, which had delayed the start of concert by two hours. SP not only appreciated my help but also called me on stage and thanked me for saving the concert by loaning my accordion.

He also sang a Hindi song of Kishore Kumar’s as a tribute to me. I had become the star among over a thousand attendees! By the way, at that time SP had not started playback singing for Hindi films such as Maine Pyar Kiya for which he received a Filmfare award and also gained accolades as Salman Khan’s voice.

While I was taping the video on my VHS recorder using a separate camera, SP thanked me publicly and asked for a copy of the video. SP signed a photo taken by me showing his approval of my photography talent.

It is a miracle that 39 years later I met SP again when he gave a concert in the Atlanta area. He was accompanied this time by the famous singer Chitra. He looked old and frail. Even though he had become a legendary singer and won many awards, I was not very happy listening to him this

time. After the show, I went on stage and met SP. At first, he did not recognize me, but when I showed him a couple of pictures from the 1979 concert, SP recognized me. I then gave him a copy of the video cassette and reminded him that he had asked me to give me a copy. He thanked me and hugged me. I also met Chitra on stage and told her that I watched her singing “Rasik Balma” song from Chori Chori on YouTube. She asked me how it was. I told her it was observing Lataji’s facial expression who was sitting in the first row.

Next day they had a meet-and-greet with SP and Chitra. I went to this reception. I presented both of them with a photo album of the previous day’s concert and also a DVD of the whole concert which they both appreciated. SP and Chitra both signed the pictures for me on which SP wrote “Grateful Modiji”. My picture with SP & Chitra was taken by someone from the audience.

SP died of COVID infection two years later and that saddened me. I am proud to be associated with this legendary’s singer’s journey.

arthritis. How often do we take a break and stretch our hands and fingers? I am guilty for sure. Thank goodness for my dance classes. I want everyone of all ages and genders to try classical dance Hasta or hand gestures. These are like alphabets that form words. There are single hand gestures known as Asamyuta Hasta and combined hand gestures using both hands known as Samyuta Hasta. Here, every finger is used to create the required position while using the subtle movements of wrists and arms. While I am working at the computer, I do these hand gestures, and the stress is removed instantly. Ask your kids to show you these hand movements. You can bond while feeling better.

Benefits of Eye Movements: As we all know staring at technical devices all day can cause eye strain and may create vision issues. In classical dances we have Drishti-Bhedas, which means different ways of glancing. We have eight classifications of glances. However, for everyone including non-dancers, I suggest the following: 1. Alokitam: Swiftly turning eyes round. 2. Sachi: Looking out of the corners of the eyes obliquely without moving the head. 3. Pralokitam: When the glance turns from side to side. 4. Ullokitam: Looking up. 5. Anuvruttam: Glancing quickly up and down. 6. Avalokitam: Looking downwards. I suggest you repeat these eye movements 3 to 4 times a day.

Neck Benefits: I don’t know about you, but I carry all my stress in my neck and shoulders. Griva-Bhedas that are neck movements, are extremely beneficial in relieving tensions in neck and shoulders. The three major neck movements to try are: 1. Sundari: Moving the head side to side horizontally. 2. Parivartita: Neck moving from right to left suggesting the half-moon. 3. Prakampita: When the neck moves forward and backward in a thrusting motion like that of a pigeon. I strongly suggest that these neck movements must be done very slowly and intentionally to avoid pain or strain.

Heart and Mind Benefits: Whether you’re 70 years young or 7 years old, engaging in physical activities that involve dancing boosts your energy, and improves your cardiovascular health. The heart-pumping health benefits of dance cannot be ignored. It also helps our mental and emotional health by reducing stress, decreasing the symptoms of anxiety and loneliness. Learning something new like this is an excellent form of mental exercise that may also reduce the risk of Alzheimer’s disease. Dancing increases your balance, strengthens your muscles, and increases flexibility, reducing injuries, pain, and falls.

You must first check with your doctor before starting such physical activities. I hope you will have some fun with these dance moves and at the same time reap its benefits. Keeping all the traditions and efforts made by the gurus and students in mind, let us make a conscious effort not to reduce these traditional dance forms to mere entertainment.

Pros of Probate Administration:

The court supervises the entire process, which can provide a layer of security and ensures all legal steps are followed correctly. This can be reassuring for some families.

A will goes through a formal court process to be declared valid, reducing the odds of future challenges to its authenticity.

Cons of Probate Administration:

Time Consuming and Expensive – This process can stretch to multiple years. Those court costs, attorney fees, executor/administrator fees, and appraisal fees can significantly reduce the value of the estate passed to heirs. Probate is a public process, meaning details of the estate, including assets, debts, and beneficiaries, become public information.

Quite a few celebrities passed without a will, making room for multiple claims and disputes. Ugggh! Their soul may not rest in peace after all – with or without Will.

In contrast to Probate assets, Assets held in a Living Trust (or revocable trust) are non-probate assets and are administered privately and directly by a designated trustee.

Pros of Trust Administration:

Avoiding probate means the process is generally faster, less costly, and private.

A trust offers a high degree of control over how and when assets are distributed, even after death. This is particularly useful for minor children, beneficiaries with special needs, or those who might not handle a large inheritance responsibly at once.

Cons of Trust Administration:

Creating a trust typically costs more initially than drafting a simple will, due to the complexity of the legal document. The trustee has a significant fiduciary duty and responsibility for managing the trust. While it is often simpler than probate, it still requires administrative effort.

In summary, while probate provides a structured, courtsupervised process, trusts offer a more private, efficient, and flexible way to administer assets.

In the next installment, I’ll cover nuances related to crossborder estate matters, but not before leaving you with some ruminating thoughts.

Ravi

Instrumental Arrangement Accompanying Vocalist(s). He’s since composed other pieces in a plethora of languages with lyrics taken from diverse sources, including the Torah, Persian and Japanese poetry, and the Bhagavad Gita.

Video game music, like any other medium, is a continuously evolving artform, shifting from its original chiptune sound toward a more cinematic ambience. While “Baba Yaga” was not the first game track to step away from the limited electronic sound of previous decades, it was one of the first to gain a widespread audience. Since then, it’s been performed at concert halls across the globe and covered by an assortment of performers alike.

What’s most exciting about modern video game music is that our technology also keeps evolving, creating new possibilities for composers. Just like with more recent film scores, music for video games is typically influenced by current trends throughout the industry. Technology still remains an important part of musical innovation, and now game composers find themselves with much more freedom to create something truly unique.

An example of such a unique achievement is the soundtrack for the 2012 game Journey, composed by Austin Wintory. He initially sustained his career by doing the occasional filler piece for TV shows and film projects in the 2000 and 2010s. While he’d dabbled in game soundtracks before, Journey (similar to its predecessors Flow & Flower) was unique in that the game contains neither dialogue nor

direct combat. The music shifts dynamically in cohesion with the visuals… building on a central cello theme to represent the game’s emotional arc as your tiny, robed character travels across a vast desert towards a mountain in the distance. I should note that Journey’s soundtrack was also nominated for a Grammy, and this would only be the first of Wintory’s composition accolades.

These are only a few examples of how the gaming world has been blessed with an array of talented composers and songwriters. Their talent and imagination have sparked pieces which would rival those of major film scores. While many of these artists may not be as well-known as someone like say… Hans Zimmer (whom ironically has recently added game music to his body of work) their compositions are no less impressive.

If you have a chance to browse Spotify, Apple Music, or YouTube, you will find a section specifically dedicated to game soundtracks. Don’t be afraid to give a few of them a listen, as you may very well be surprised at how a few simple songs, musical motifs, and pieces of theme music have left a lasting impact on gamers.

Now I must go play Journey again… as every time I hear that first cello solo, my heart swells with joy as I prepare for yet another uplifting experience.

Here are a couple more recipes to try during the hot summer months.

Jowar Khichdi

This is an easy to digest meal – great for dinners in the summer.

Ingredients

1 cup jowar (use the whole sorghum seeds, not the flour)

½ cup moong dal – split yellow or green with skin

1 tablespoon ghee or use peanut or sesame oil

Whole spices: 1-inch piece cinnamon, two green cardamom pods, two cloves, 2 bay leaves and 1 ½ teaspoon cumin seeds

Vegetables – peeled/diced: 1-2 carrots, ½ lauki (dudhi), 1 green bell pepper, ½ cup green peas – you can also add fresh/frozen spinach

1-inch knob ginger

½ teaspoon turmeric

Salt to taste

½ cup cilantro

How to make jowar khichdi

Place the jowar in a bowl. Rinse and soak for 6-8 hours. Soak the mung dal for 30 minutes to 1 hour. Rinse both daal and jowar before cooking. In an Instant Pot, start the Sauté mode, and add ghee or oil. Add the whole spices. Sauté for a few minutes, then add the cut vegetables. Add

the dal, jowar, salt, and other spices. Add 5 cups of water and stir everything. Close the lid and cook in pressure mode for 20 minutes. Let the pressure be released naturally. Open the lid and stir well. Add ½ cup chopped cilantro. Adjust consistency by adding water if needed.

Serve it with a dollop of ghee or yogurt or buttermilk.

know better than everyone else? Because let’s face it, sometimes, all we’re doing is stroking our own fragile ego like a pampered cat (I know that from personally taking care of my daughter’s cat). Kitna sweet lag raha hai apna advice (isn’t my advice the best), isn’t it?

Here’s the thing: That advice monster lurking inside us doesn’t just want to be helpful, it wants validation. It wants to scream, “Dekho, how smart am I? I’m the guru here, and if you don’t listen, it’s your loss.” But here’s a tough pill to swallow: If we’re not careful, all that advice is actually less about helping someone and more about showing off how right we are. And guess what? Being too right also comes with its own cost!

Let’s talk about ego for a second. That thing inside us that makes us want to be the smartest person in the room. We throw advice around like confetti, hoping someone will catch it and praise us. The ego thrives on this—the validation that says, “See? I was right. I knew it. Everyone else is a fool. I am the master of all knowledge.” This isn’t just about offering help, it’s about feeding that tiny, fragile creature that we call our “better self” (or should I say, “The emperor of your own advice!”)—that part of us that craves to be always right. And trust me, it’s exhausting. For us and everyone else.

But wait—what if we paused and thought about it differently? What if, instead of obsessing over proving we know better, we took all that advice and turned it inward? What if we focused on changing ourselves? If we could actually live the advice we love to give, maybe just maybe the people around us would feel the shift without us saying a word. It’s like that line from Bollywood movies: “Dil se agar kuch chaha to zaroori nahi ki zabaan se kehna pade.” You don’t have to force it down people’s throats. It can just be.

You see, when we work on ourselves, our actions speak louder than any advice we could possibly give. So, let’s stop trying to shove wisdom down people’s throats like we’re handing out free samosas. Instead, let’s lead by example. Let the light of our own growth shine, and trust me, people will notice. And they won’t feel the pressure to take our advice. They’ll just see us becoming better versions of ourselves, and that might be all the advice they ever need.

Next time the Advice Monster pops up (and trust me, it will), maybe ask yourself: “Is this for them, or is it for my own ego?” Because if you can answer that honestly, maybe you won’t need to give any advice at all. Instead, you’ll just be living it, and that, my friends, is a much brighter, egofree way to go.

Eye on Markets

continued from page 46

Oil prices are down 15% this year so far. This is not by accident as a key part of the Trump administration’s agenda is to increase domestic production by 3mm bpd. This is an ambitious strategy by means of taking other options through geopolitics to influence Saudis/Russians/OPEC+ to boost oil output in return for lifting Russian sanctions, military support for OPEC nations, and pursuing an Iran deal.

An added bonus is that these oil revenues will be recycled into US Treasuries.

It’s not only important to know what is driving such fiscal policy markets, but also who is driving them. Retail and corporate buybacks are clearly in charge of the markets right now. There is $15 billion in fresh capital each day, with retail and buybacks as two-thirds of that. Retail’s market share is now more than a third of market activity. This is an all-time high, significantly above the long-term average of 12%.

Buybacks will total just above $1 trillion this year, another all-time record. We’ve already seen major new buyback announcements from Apple, Visa, Alphabet, Meta, Wells Fargo, Uber, GM, AMD, and URI. The intersection of fiscal policy and these technical drivers will show leadership through certain tech stocks, crypto, financials and industrials.

These higher beta areas carry more risk, and given the macro & fiscal backdrop, traditional hedges to lower beta such as long duration Treasuries won’t be very effective.

In many previous rallies, investors could hide in defensive sectors such as healthcare and staples. Currently, these sectors haven’t participated, underperforming leading sectors by nearly 15% in the past month.

It’s not just the lack of hedges that makes certain investors uncomfortable, but the high valuation they will have to pay.

The S&P is no longer dominated by highly cyclical, boom & bust, low margin, highly levered manufacturing, energy, and industrial companies. It is instead dominated by highly stable cash flow, high margin, lowly levered, high shareholder return, highly innovative, less cyclical tech companies. A record number of S&P companies have higher than 25% margins, less than lx leverage, greater than 10% growth, and higher than 20% return on invested capital. These are premium businesses that command multiple premiums.

The speed and the nature of this rally could make many investors uncomfortable, who will then need to step out of their comfort zone to participate.

Looking forward, the market will need to focus on the latest from Washington and emerging economic data.

Astroscope JULY 2025

Aries

(March 21 – April 19)

Your confidence will be on par this month with an array of efforts helping you earn more income. However, it is advisable to use the second week of the month to do proper study and analysis before making decisions. You will also enjoy good help from friends and associates. Drive carefully and exercise cautiously to avoid potential mishaps.

Taurus

(April 20 – May 20)

This is a favorable period to make long-term decisions. You could participate in an important family / career related activity this month but be prepared to experience some competition. Try to avoid shady politics as even a small cheat or lie can destroy any potential opportunities. Students may have to work harder to achieve their desired grades. Good news from afar may delight you at the end of the month. Also be sure to watch your health.

Gemini

(May 21 – June 20)

Great opportunities may come your way, so be sure to grab as many as you can with destiny favoring you. Try not to lose your self-confidence under the influence of excitement or anger. Watch your health seriously this month. Avoid driving during the last week of the month. Discipline could also prove very helpful, especially with your partner’s encouragement. This is a good time to consider investing in real estate.

Cancer

(June 21 – July 22)

You will perform exceptionally at work but see no immediate benefits. You should receive new opportunities by the last days of the month but don’t wait until next month to make a decision. The turning point may bring a feeling of big relief. A friendly discussion with parents may help you in making a true decision. Don’t make any major decisions on your own. Make a team and move forward.

Leo

(July 23 – August 22)

You may experience an emotional roller coaster ride this month. Try to stay on top of things and adopt a flexible attitude during the second half of the month. Support from friends and associates should delight you. You may enter into a new venture, so be sure to listen to your children before making any bold decisions. Also keep in mind that carelessness may lead to minor health problems.

Virgo

(August 23 – September 21)

Your life will be orchestrated by circumstances. You may struggle at work. The third week of the month should provide an opportunity for you to make decisions so try to act cautiously. A family gathering during the last week may bring good fortune. A steady state of health is indicated. Avoid aggression and don’t make any decisions based on a friend’s advice. Avoid taking on any loans this month.

Libra

(September 22 – October 20)

You could experience steady progress this month. With the great help of your sibling, you should enjoy success. Try not to accelerate this process. You may feel happy during the middle of the month. You should see a rise in your bank balance. The stock market may bring some relief during the third week. For the students, now is the time to focus on studying. This is also the perfect time for a long drive.

Scorpio

(October 21 – November 20)

After a positive start, you could experience a minor downfall in which you may lose confidence and make bad decisions. Try to maintain easy temperament and keep working hard. Don’t try to be over smart. Don’t take any loan or debt this month. A strong para-psychic experience may bring major negative changes among your friend circle and relations with your family. Try to focus on studying and reading.

Sagittarius

(November 21 – December 21)

This will be a period of great achievement and celebration. Friends and elders may even join you in such revere. You should also enjoy love and respect from higher authorities. You will invest some money in business or home affairs. This time will also take a somewhat downward turn for students. Your enemies won’t dare harm you. Use your self-confidence to achieve success and be prepared to work hard.

Capricorn

(December 22 – January 21)

You will experience minor positive changes at the beginning of the month which should help you relax. Your workload will increase but should prove rewarding. Support from family will provide positive results for your business / trade. Continue to watch your health carefully and avoid confrontation when possible. Also don’t plan any travel, as you may have to change plans at the last moment.

Aquarius

(January 22 – February 18)

Try to be practical this month and concentrate on your family and social life. One remaining chance for a promotion is still available and will provide a suitable rise in income. Be aware of surreptitious enemies who could foil your plans for happiness. This is not a good time for students. If involved in legal dispute, your situation should head in a more positive direction.

Pisces

(February 19 – March 20)

Even though it will feel like your life is improving, new problems will arise by the last week of the month. Minor health issues could become a prime concern. Any risk taking tendencies must be curbed. Old family problems will continue to bother you. Your work performance could be poor, but luck should protect you. Long-term planning is essential now.

I have shaken the dust off my hot season garb, aka shorts and t-shirts, my summer sadhu wardrobe, and now all I want to do is roam the realms, become one with its evolutionary divineness.

Sadhus are an ancient concept in the ancient land of India. Some, as tales have been told in the long past, were able to transport to other dimensions. I just want to beam over to the beach one moment and the mountains next. Gather with the extended family for a reunion or float about in endless outdoor musical gatherings. Starlit concerts on a clear summer night are the stuff of dreams. There is nothing like it. I feel most alive when music envelopes me as twilight fades into night. The vibe spread into the universe.

Today I lingered in the woods, near a small pond.

A dragonfly hovered around me near the pond while I thought of transporting to other zones. Who knows? It could have been a spiritual entity, a fellow sadhu, inviting me to join in the flight. I imagined being a mini living helicopter, hovering around the area, and then zipping off to lands afar. I tossed a small stick into the pond and the ripples expanded into circular rings, seemingly opening a portal. Hmmm. Maybe I should just dive in.

The vast majority of youthful memories of humans involves the hot season. Even in the perennially hot country like India, where I spent the first decade of my life, summer breaks were the prime connections and memory markers with visits to grandparents, uncles and aunties’ homes.

I used to long for a year-round summer, but then the anticipation of this time of year would diminish. It wouldn’t be the same. No, it’s better to have seasons so this classical memory making time of the year is fully appreciated.

July is a spin month, turning to the other half of the year, while I land on the other side of the numbers game, as another single digit gets added to the total of my summers on this globe. This time of year, I strip down to minimal clothing to dance with heat, yes, but also, I strip down to mental bareness letting the sun, stars, nature and the warm breeze do its cleansing.

The dragonfly zips by again, giving me one last chance to join in. I’m good right here, I tell it, through the wave of my hand. The pond’s ripples are settled again, the portal closed, the still water reflects the surroundings while I reflect on the inner being. Time is moving slow. A few minutes are spent feeling wholly alive, in the moment, lounging in the realm of the mind, blanketed by the happiness of the hot season.

This mid-year season, if you see me sauntering about somewhere in our magical world, lost in the ether of heat, in shorts and sandals, just send me a mental communique, astral vibrations if you will, across the humid dome. I’ll connect with your signal, my fellow summer sadhu.
