Introduction This is the first newsletter of SaafConsult in 2013. The last three months many new developments, assignments and opportunities have come our way. One of the main achievements this winter/spring was that we established a regional office in Amman. The branch office of SaafConsult in Amman is now formally approved by the Jordanian authorities and will ensure a continuous presence in the Middle East/ North Africa region and to cater to customer requests.

Projects & Pipeline Pakistan For the assignment, “Mission Water Supply and Sanitation Sector Scan Pakistan” the Netherlands Embassy in Pakistan selected Ele Jan Saaf as principal consultant. Ele Jan was the team leader for an appraisal of the potential for Dutch water business to invest and participate in the water and wastewater sector in Pakistan (DGIS). He worked with our long-time colleague and friend, Mr. Azher Uddin Khan of the Cleaner Production Institute in Lahore. Consultant involved: Ele Jan Saaf Ghana Ele Jan Saaf worked as an IWRM expert for the ex-ante evaluation of the Ghana Netherlands WASH Programme. He developed an IWRM component for the GNWP which complements the interventions planned in the municipalities of Ga West, Central South, Cape Coast and El Mina. Consultant involved: Ele Jan Saaf

Sabrina Doetjes attended a workshop of UNDP and IUCN in Sharm el Sheikh entitled ‘How to Strengthen Synergies between the Governance of Disaster Risk Reduction and Climate Change Adaptation in the Arab Region.’

Marie worked for the Central Tajik Water Rehabilitation Project, Stakeholder Participation Programme (SPP) in Tajikistan. The SPP aims at enhancing public ownership and stakeholder participation in the provision of water services, increasing public awareness on water related issues as well as on integrating poverty and social issues into the tariff reforms. Assisting the Companies to improve their corporate governance and in the finalization and implementation of the Stakeholder Engagement Plans.

Consultant involved: Sabrina Doetjes Jordan - PSI Mohammad Azraq joined the SaafConsult team to manage the submission for a request to PSI funding modality of the Dutch government. Prior to this, he was the MENA Research and Online Outreach Officer at New Tactics in Human Rights. Mohammad holds a Bachelors of Science in Electrical Engineering form the University of Jordan and is specialized in renewable energy. SaafConsult, through its investment vehicle, the RENEW Fund, is working together with iGreens from Jordan and a large international company to develop a 100 KW solar power project in Jordan. This project is the first step in a series of modular systems that will be added over time. The power plant will possibly be located in the Eastern Desert of Jordan and will most likely be a conventional PV plant. The consortium intends to submit a request to the PSI funding modality of the Dutch government to co-finance the project. Consultant involved: Mohammad Azraq

Danube Delta Ele Jan was contracted to develop a Climate Change Adaptation Strategy for the Danube Delta for WWF Danube-Carpathian Programme. The project includes a comprehensive study of the possible impact of climate change on the Danube Delta. The Climate Change Adaptation Strategy will outline the general action plan to address the impacts and threats from the climate change, including its uncertainties and extremes with the aim to reduce vulnerability of the biodiversity as well as main natural resources and economic sectors to the climate changes. CarboWet

Dan McDermott joined the SaafConsult team and will (hopefully) work as an Early Stage Researcher for the Seventh Framework Programme, Marie Curie Actions –People- International Research Staff Exchange team in Jordan. Together with Sabrina Doetjes, he will work on several Work Packages; Transboundary Water Management Fora, Sustainable agriculture and Education.

Friends of the Earth Middle East, together with the CarboWet Foundation signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on 23 March 2013 in the Sharhabil bin Hassneh Ecopark. The MoU details the cooperation between the two organisations to offer carbon offsetting in the Sharhabil bin Hassneh Eco Park in the Jordan Valley. The CW/FoEME Carbon Offsetting Mechanism is available for public and private organisations from all countries. The first company that will donate funds to the mechanisms to offset its carbon emissions will be SaafConsult B.V. Funds will be used for afforestation and reforestation as well as broader watershed protection.

Dan is a consultant with 4 years’ experience in the fields of sustainability and natural resource management. He has worked with public and private sector bodies in the Middle East and United States in project management, business development, grant writing and quantitative / qualitative research.

We expect to be contracted by GIZ this month to execute a study to develop options for the Water Authority of Jordan’s institutional restructuring in the Southern Governorates (Kerak, Ma’an and Tafileh), incl. recommendations for improved participation/ communication in the decision-making/implementation process.
