MEDIUM DENSITY TOWNHOUSING

Year: Three

Unit: Studio

Building type: Residential - townhouse

In line with the rise of medium density living, the breif requested students to explore ‘the missing middle’ in cities across Australia. My approach to the project was to infuse family living into the outskirts of a CBD area. Reducing the urban-sprawl of suburbia and giving access for families to easily accessimportant amenities like cafes, schools and working within walking distance. We were also tasked to research into how our lives have changed post-covid to which I had found a greater amount of people are living closer to their extended families, both financially and relationship wise and great decision. My proposal aims to reconnect four vastly different age groups: youth, young adults, adults and the elderly in one complex whilst still maintaing the privacy that they would experience in a single detached surburban lifestyle. Shared garden spaces and public plazas allowed my breif to shine as a bigger emphasis on outdoor living and connectivity was important to me outside of the walls of a house. Both connections with all the units in my complex has been thought of and also the connections that can form the broader society that are expected to pass by due to this being a CBD area.

MOSQUE ANALYSIS

Year: one

Unit: drawing history

Building type: residential - place of worship

Hand drawing assesment which tasked us to create a sectional axonometric and a narrative section whcih shows the views experienced when walking through a place of worhsip.

STRUCTURAL ANALYSYS

Year: Two + three

Unit: materials and small and large constructions

Building type: residential - single detached

Students were given buildings that were constructed in differing natures, ranging from timber construction to steel and were tasked with researching, evaluating and compiling through a 3D and 2D drawings in what they were able to decifer from their research. The drawings I have shown in the following page show my hand drawn analysis of a timber building local to the Perth area. Through my research and own knowledge I was able to best estimate how the structure is standing today by showing 1. an exploded axo 2. detial drawings of joints and connections and 3. section through the cruical components.

RURAL MUSEUM

Year: Two

Unit: Studio

Building type: Commercial - museum

Given the breif to build a local museum for the town of Collie, Western Australia, an ex-mining town my proposal sits on one of the five sites that were provided to us. The site was chosen due to it’s connection with the old railway which had a significant importance for the transportation of coal in and out of Collie. Given this piece of history my museum was designed in response to the rural nature of the site, I chose to explore an indoor-outdoor ikea-like museum experience where you are guided by a story to follow from one exhibition to another. Manipulation of indoor-outdoor spaces allowed me to design intimate indoor spaces for exhibition objects that would require finner detail and uptake and utilising outdoor exhibiton spaces to hold the large minning objects that are found all across the minning sites of Collie. The roof type is inspired by the simple gable roofs of the surrounding 1920’s building in the area whilst the overlapping of it in a ‘random’ array is due to manipulation of shadow for each exhibition.

ROOFTOP LIVING

Year: Two

Unit: Studio

Building type: Residential - studio units

Given the location of the busy metropolitan of Seoul, South Korea students were tasked with creating affordable, small units on top of a four storey apartment complex due to the rising trend of living on the prime real estate of the rooftops of the numerous apartment buildings in the city. Given the affordability factor my proposal aimed at creating owner driven construction buildings that would be easily replicatable no matter the rooftop. The material choices were sourced from local scrap yards and/or cheap manufactors in the area. The three units I’ve proposed aims at creating their own private spaces however are manipulatable to open up to become large shared spaces for large gatherings. A key focus was also to provide south facing outdoor space to facilitate activites such as taekwondo, a Korean martial arts that is widely popular and to have smaller private outdoor spaces, which would typically only be possible in more luxurious apartment living, has been configured here as I believe even on a budget, living comfortably should be achieved.
