MEDIUM DENSITY HOUSING

Project location: Bunbury CBD, Western Australia

Project type: Residential Unit instructors: Kate Hislop, Santiago Perez & Matt Delroy-Carr Year: 2023

In line with the rise of medium-density living, the brief requested students to explore ‘the missing middle’ in cities across Australia. My approach to the project was to integrate family living into the outskirts of a CBD area, reducing urban sprawl and providing families with easy access to key amenities such as cafes, schools, and workplaces within walking distance. In addition to this, the breif tasks students to research how lives have changed post-COVID, where I discovered that a larger portion of the Australian population is currently residing with / closer to extended families. This shift is driven by both financial considerations and a desire for stronger familial relationships.

My proposal aims to reconnect four different age groups—youth, young adults, adults, and the elderly—within one complex while maintaining the privacy typically associated with a single detached suburban lifestyle. Shared garden spaces and public plazas were central to my design, as I placed a strong emphasis on outdoor living and connectivity beyond the walls of a house. The connections between all units in the complex were carefully considered, as were the potential interactions with the broader public expected to pass through the area, given its proximity to the CBD and a main road.

Post-covid extended families are more inclined to being more in each others lives and due to the rising cost of living, living with each other works out to be a financially responsible option as well. This project aims at working with this shift in living standards whilst maintaining privacy amongst each other, meaning each unit in the cluster can be independent of each other without having relation to the person next door

In Western Australia the rise of medium density living is to decrease the urban sprawl of typical suburbia, changing the ‘Australian dream’ of living such lives is almost not possible which is why this proposal aims at retaining features of suburban living within the tight parameters of each unit so families are more inclined to not loose their dreams in suburbia and to not feel the negetive connontaitions with medium density living

Each ‘cluster’ ( a cluster consists of three units, an elderly unit, family unit and a young adult unit) is completely independant of each other in terms of it’s amenities, however have two shared outdoor spaces, the front court and back court

‘OKTAPBANG’

COMMUNITY-BUILT ROOFTOP STUDENT HOUSING

Project location: Seoul, South Korea

Project type: Student housing

Unit instructor: Lara Camilla Pinho

Year: 2022

Given the location of the bustling metropolis of Seoul, South Korea, and the ongoing cost-of-living crisis, the task involves creating affordable housing units on top of a four-story apartment complex. This initiative is inspired by the rising trend of utilizing the empty rooftop spaces that exist on most apartment buildings. Targeting students as the primary demographic, who require cost-effective solutions, the proposal aims to develop owner-driven construction methods that are easily replicable across various rooftops.

The materials chosen for this project were sourced from local scrap yards and/or low-cost manufacturers in the area. The three proposed units aim to provide students with the luxury of self-sufficient living while occupying a compact space. Given the limited square footage, the design incorporates multiple movable walls and roofing elements to transform small private spaces into larger shared areas for gatherings and social activities.

A key focus of the design is the inclusion of south-facing outdoor spaces to facilitate activities such as Taekwondo, dining, and lounging. These features, which are typically found only in luxury apartments, have been thoughtfully integrated into this affordable housing solution. The overarching goal is to demonstrate that a humane and comfortable lifestyle can be achieved regardless of an individual’s financial situation.

DESIGNING AND BUILDING ARCHITECTURE IN THE SIMS 4

Beyond my traditional studies, my passion for architecture extends into the virtual world of The Sims, where I have been creating homes and spaces that explores diverse architectural styles, and craft environments that evoke emotions and aesthetics. This creative outlet allows me to push boundaries, refine my design intuitions and celebrate the joy of architecture in an exploratory way.
