OFFICE OF RESEARCH, INNOVATION AND COMMERCILIZATION (ORIC) 1. INTRODUCTION Under the guidelines and directives of HEC, ORIC has started working to organize the research activities of IoBM by ensuring availability of well-established and fully functional offices having with required staff as per minimum criteria. The ORIC is headed by a Director Research supported by Manager Research operation & Development, Manager University Industry Linkages and Technology Transfer, Manager Intellectual Property/Legal, Communication specialist and other staff members as mentioned in Organization structure (Pg. no.7). By having strong coordination among proposed staff, ORIC will set the pace to catch the challenges in the field of Research and Innovation.

The ORIC provides strategic and operational support to the IoBM‘s research activities and will have an eternal role facilitating the university- Industry linkages. By and larger the ORIC is focal point for all research related activities of the institute. It facilitates the Institute’s researchers to promote their research work nationally and internationally by addressing the important factors for creating a research environment.

ORIC, as a centralized research unit aims to give benefits to Faculty, Management and PhD Research Scholars of each discipline of IoBM by making Policies for strengthening and enhancing research influence and productivity all around the institute and provide substantial support for pursuing theirs research and publication.

To provide end to end services on all matters, ORIC will also support, promote and evaluate university researchers by building up the development of (Faculty/Staff and Management) Capacity, promoting academic research and develop mechanism for Industrial liaison and Commercialization of research.

1.1 VISION The ORIC-IoBM supports IoBM‘s vision of lifelong learning, as well as its long term goal of seeking AACSB’ Accreditation which believes in innovation, engagement and impact.

1.2 MISSION Encourage and accelerate the process of creation and diffusion of knowledge and dedicated towards capacity building to promote and strengthen the research culture and welfare activities for academia, industry and society in general.

1.3 AIMS AND OBJECTIVES 

To promote quality research by publishing research papers, Journals and organizing conferences, Workshops ,Forums and seminars and disseminate the information to the community.



To provide academic research environment at IoBM



To promote research nationally and internationally through workshops and Conferences.



To strengthen capacity development of Faculty/Staff and Management through trainings and workshops.



To provide information about various research platforms and to obtain grants funding projects for researchers, faculty research fellows and students nationally and internationally.



To ensure the highest ethical and quality research standards. (Turnitin)

To strengthen University-industry linkages through Capstone and others projects.



To develop partnership with universities and industries to form joint research venture.

To promote entrepreneurship and commercialization of research and other training activities.

1.6 COPY RIGHT, PATENT & TRADEMARK REGISTRATION ORIC encourages the Copy Right Laws, Patent Laws and Trademark Laws and help and guide patent filling and licensing of PhD Dissertation of IoBM scholars and Faculty. This law protect the work of individual results, ideas, invention, design, publication etc. for mishandling owners’ work by any third party or opposition.

This law protects the University assets.

Each department is responsible for getting a patent and copyright agreement signed with university.

1.7

RESEARCH CULTURE & SUPPORT

Faculty, Management and students are encouraged and supported directly and indirectly through some of the following ways. 

Office of Director Research: Manage and enhance the research acti vities of the institute, develop research policies and to ensure that all the faculty members are involved in research.



Doctoral Committee: This is an institute level Research Committee which is called the Doctoral Committee which consists of all Deans and other members/experts (if required). Its scope is to look after the overall research in all disciplines.



Travel Grant Committee: which includes Director of Research the Deans and its scope is to approve funds for the paper presentations in the reputed conferences and research publications.



EMEC: Entrepreneurship and Management Excellence Center always encourages to organize Trainings, Workshops and participate in bidding the consultancy projects.

1.7.1 PHD RESEARCH INCENTIVES Subsidized PhD Program: IoBM’s PhD programs are highly subsidized through the following ways to encourage hard core research for faculty and Management staff. 

Research Fellowships: Research fellows are expected to contribute to research besides teaching two courses and be on the campus similar to a full-time faculty



Research Assistants (RAs): Research students assist faculty members in specified R&D projects approved by the Management. They work for stipulated number of hours for which they are paid for generating the predefined deliverable.



Faculty Incentives for doing PhD: Full time faculty is given course exemption incentives as well as the funding for the research degree. Some conditions apply.



Publication Incentives: Research faculty is given monetary and non-monetary incentive for publishing in IFJs and in HEC recognized journals



Travel for Conferences: Research faculty is given travel grants for research and publishing papers in reputed conferences that help nationally and internationally.

1.7.2 RESEARCH FUNDING AND PROPOSALS Research Funds are available at IoBM for pursuing industry relevant research. Faculty and students are encouraged to submit their proposals. Besides internal funding, IoBM provides support to faculty and research students for designing research proposals for various external funding agencies. EMEC has past experience of several such projects for external bodies.

1.7.3 THESIS/PROPOSAL DEFENSE PREPARATION SUPPORT To enable the researchers to stand up and formally defend their proposals and final thesis/dissertations in an open defense, IoBM provides preparatory help. For this purpose, an internal support group consisting of faculty members and senior students is assigned to review and help the research student in developing the research proposal, thesis and dissertations through a progress seminars and get the feedback to improve the research before it is sent for evaluation and ready for an open defense. This internal mock defense takes place in front of a team of researchers which includes students and Faculty Members with an open invitation.

1.7.4 CONFERENCES IoBM is continuously striving to promote a culture of research and commercialization. For this ORIC, EMEC and Research centers of IoBM continuously participate and organize National and International conferences, Workshops and seminars for giving opportunity to faculty/staff and management to explore themselves across the globe.

2. RESEARCH ACTIVITIES 2.1 Research Center of CBM IoBM Strategic goals include the goal of pursuing leading-edge research and engaging in the development of innovative ideas and analytical, interpersonal and leadership skills. Based on this goal, the CBM Strategy includes meeting AACSB standards for intellectual contributions and faculty qualifications and exceed them, development of research programs, research faculty and a thriving research culture at IoBM, and the development of executive training and faculty consultancy to drive the research relevance and rigor. 2.2.1 HUMAN CAPITAL MANAGEMENT (HCM) RESEARCH GROUP Objectives In support of the Institute’s overarching objectives, the MHCRG will build on its strengths to manage a research environment which will: 

Promote rigorous research that is relevant to the local and global requirements.

The Focus of MHCRG Management and Human Capital Research Group (MHCRG) emphases on the knowledge, skills and attitudes of the people employed in an organization through the integrated research activities. 2.2.3 QUALITY MANAGEMENT RESEARCH GROUPS The objective of this research group is to focus on Quality Management/Managerial Excellence issues in the business and other organizations. This research group consists of PhD /MS students and faculty members. The group provides an academic environment for the students/scholars for innovative and critical analysis of organizational problems. This research group focuses on wide-range of problem domains in the field of Operations Management, Operations Research, Total Quality Management, Statistical Process Control, Supply Chain Management and Procurement and Inventory Management. The students with the guidance of faculty members apply their academic and professional knowledge in planning, managing and conducting research activities.

The participant in the research group can obtain academic cum practical experience and exposure into their chosen field which will give them more opportunities in their practical life career. The group members may have more chances to present and publish their research work.

In other words, organizational psychology is the scientific study of the workplace. Rigor and methods of psychology are applied to issues of critical relevance to business, including talent management, coaching, assessment, selection, training, organizational development, performance, and work-life balance. This field focuses on increasing workplace

Productivity and related issues such as the physical and mental wellbeing of employees. Organizational psychologists perform a wide variety of tasks, including studying worker attitudes and behavior, evaluating companies, and conducting leadership training. 2.2.7 MEDIA PSYCHOLOGY RESEARCH GROUP Objective Media psychology seeks to understand how media as a factor in the growing use of technology impacts and how people perceive, interpret, respond, and interact in a media rich world.

Scope of Research The scope of the research group is to undertake pioneering and ground-breaking research on the impact of electronic media on the Pakistani audience. The idea is to generate data (nearly non-existent at the moment) from Pakistan based on Cognitive, Behavioral and Affective aspects of electronic media as well as the emergent technologies such as social media apps, mobile communication tools on the lives of common people of Pakistan. We intend to maintain a key focus on the under 30-year-old demographic as it represents 70% of the nearly 200 million inhabitants of Pakistan. Key Intended Outcomes of Research Multidimensional outcomes of research have been envisaged: 1. Research to be published in nationally and internationally accredited journals 2. Short Documentary Films based on the process and outcomes of key findings of research 3. 2.2.8 ENTREPRENEURSHIP RESEARCH GROUP

Purpose There is a lack of entrepreneurial research on entrepreneurial attitudes, behaviors, approaches, strategies, failure rates & reasons, success factors etc. in Pakistani context. Generally the teachers in entrepreneurial discipline are referring to literature developed in the western context to address the challenges of the western world in the light of resources available there. This alien literature become of out of sync from the local challenges for obvious reasons. Keeping this in view there is a need to conduct entrepreneurial research in local context so that effective strategies can be develop for both entrepreneurs and teachers teaching entrepreneurship in Pakistani institutions.

Aims & Objectives 

To understand the entrepreneurial mindset, behavior, strategies, methods of Pakistani successful & failed entrepreneurs.



To develop effective pedagogical methods to enable students to become entrepreneurs in Pakistani context.

Identify the dos and don’ts for student entrepreneurs who want to become successful entrepreneurs.

Develop effective incubation programs to guide interested students to setup their ventures outside the class room after completion of their entrepreneurship course

Molvi and Afshan Rauf This research is focusing on key areas of students intentions towards Entrepreneurship, the family influence and the role of parent’s profession in influencing career choices. Elements such as family size, family income and parents acting as role model for their children are the key highlights. It also incorporates how Entrepreneurial education is assisting students and trying to analyze to what extent education stimulate this behavior. A survey has been conducted from approximate 120 students on parent’s occupation, family size and family income and residential area as part of survey questionnaire.

Entrepreneurial Dynamics of local entrepreneurship Researcher: Omar Javaid To understand how local entrepreneurs overcome various challenges in the process of setting up their businesses from scratch, by doing thematic analysis of their semi structured interviews (qualitative). The research will compare the experience of struggling entrepreneurs with those who are succeeding. The output of this research will bring IoBM in a leading position among all universities in Karachi in terms of entrepreneurial research on local entrepreneurs as no such study exists, therefore this study will become the baseline for any future research work to be done in a local context. This study will further provide grounds for a much comprehensive qualitative style study, which can be further expanded to other cities as well, to understand the entrepreneurial strategies and behaviors across Pakistan. All of these findings will benefit IoBM students in the process of setting up their own businesses, while faculty will be equipped with necessary the knowledge of local conditions and challenges an entrepreneur would face during the startup under local circumstances. The data collected can also be used to develop case studies of local entrepreneurs which may also be published in a book format.

The Impact of Entrepreneurship Course Leading to a Startup by the students Researcher: Erum Zaidi Objective of this research is to explore the impact of an entrepreneurship course on the intentions of doing a business. This research will also ascertain the natural inclination of a student towards starting his own venture, and the factors which are responsible in making students risk takers. Additionally the factors which inhibit students from initiating their own ventures will also be explored.

2.2.9 ENERGY MANAGEMENT RESEARCH GROUP Objective The Energy Management Research group at the College of Engineering Sciences (CES), IoBM focuses on the entrepreneurial engineering opportunities in renewable and conventional energy options for resolving the energy crisis of Pakistan. The objective of the research group is to stimulate the development of economically feasible renewable and other energy solutions for Pakistan.

2.2.10 ONTOLOGY AND BUSINESS ANALYTICS RESEARCH GROUP Objective 

To integrate ontological research with business analytics research



To link the research activities and experiential learning activities into a virtuous cycle that creates impact on industry

To develop an integrated knowledge base of business research conceptual frameworks and the research data



To be able to identify gaps in business research through analysis of literature survey.

To develop a framework for enhancing, refining and expanding complementary research.

To enable sharing and communication of research conducted by previous generations of researchers in related fields.

The goal of this research is to develop a foundation for creating a research related impact on industry and society by linking teaching, experiential learning of students, industry interaction, research knowledge creation, faculty development, executive training in a virtuous cycle of continuing refinement. The repository would also be used to study the synergies of such repositories with the business analytics data that is now becoming increasingly available on the net. The research group would develop a knowledge-base that will become the repository of research and experiential learning done by students and their MPhil/PhD research and its continuous refinement and extension through the faculty research and publications. The data obtained from the industry would be further refined through specific industry interventions. The combined analyses of the data in such repositories would help the industry through specially directed surveys to be published regularly.

4. UNIVERSITY INDUSTRY LINKAGES 4.1 INDUSTRY ENGAGEMENT/ INDUSTRIAL COLLABORATION IoBM strives hard for obtaining concrete output from industry engagements and international/national collaborations and linkages.

Over the last 20 years, IoBM has produced over 8000 graduates who are now at senior and prominent positions at top organizations in Pakistan and globally .Engagement with alumni is a crucial link in the development of an institution and involves work on various projects including their participation which is vigorously sought at various academic platforms.

IoBM has developed extensive links with alumni and other industry professionals and executives and invites them regularly as: 

Guest speakers in class and specially designed talk series such as ExLT and MRSS

Invited speakers at workshops, seminars and conferences

Mentors to provide counseling and guidance to students

Consultative members of strategy development bodies, curriculum development consultations, and review/audit of course files etc.

4.1.1 EXPERIENTIAL LEARNING AND CAPSTONE PROJECTS Experiential learning initiative of CBM enables an impact on industry and society by linking teaching, experiential learning of students, industry interaction, knowledge creation, faculty development, executive training in a virtuous cycle of continuing refinement. For this, Experiential Learning intensive courses are designated separately and require special focus of the students and faculty. Same as, Capstone final year MBA projects program provide industry relevance through work on real life problems in real life situations and is part of the experiential learning initiative. The projects increases the rigor of the program by making the students responsible for meeting the industry standards for the acceptance of the project work.

4.4 IOBM - ACADEMIC COLLABORATION AGREEMENT WITH FOREIGN UNIVERSITIES TO PROMOTE FACULTY DEVELOPMENT Based on the Academic Collaboration agreement IoBM is able to promote faculty development as follows:  Foreign Faculty Induction PhD qualified faculty from partner Universities, particularly in areas in which qualified faculty is deficient in Pakistan, are invited to teach at IoBM for short and medium term. The foreign faculty is paid tax free internationally competitive salary in dollars, along with free return fare for self and spouse and free accommodation and local transportation.

As soon as security conditions improve in Pakistan IoBM will be able to attract a large number of qualified faculty and researchers from Partner Universities.  PhD and Post Ph.D. for IoBM faculty Partner Universities, allow IoBM Faculty to pursue PhD, Post PhD and Research assignments to IoBM Faculty members. Through a specially structured program IoBM’s Faculty is able to pursue their PhD qualifications enhancement programs through full time dedicated study at the Partner University and split/joint PhD Program in which the faculty members are able to fulfill most of the PhD and Research requirements at IoBM.  Final Review of PhD Dissertation A larger number of Partner Universities have agreed to assign their senior PhD Faculty to act as final reviewers of PhD Dissertations of IoBM Faculty and students.  Collaborative Research The Academic Collaboration agreements with partner universities also provides for collaborative research carried out by IoBM faculty/Researchers and Partner Universities. Collaborative research enables IoBM’s faculty to participate in applied and pure research projects with qualified members of Partner Universities. For example Nagoya University of Commerce and Business (NUCB) one of IoBM’s partner recently requested IoBM faculty members to participate jointly or solely in over a dozen applied research projects, the list of which is attached.

Collaborative research enables up-gradation of research endeavors of IoBM faculty and also enables them to benefit from a large pool of research knowledge and research publications available with partner Universities

COMMERCILIZATION Commercialization is the process of introducing new product/ideas /knowledge/training that’s why faculty of IoBM is continuously engaged with different agencies working on different projects to explore themselves as well as promotes technology-transfer and commercialize the activities that will energize and support the economy in general and the organizations in particular. In IoBM a center named as Entrepreneurship & Management Excellence Centre (EMEC) has been established to promote these activities. Following are the activities of EMAC: 5.1 EMEC CENTER ACTIVITIES The Entrepreneurship & Management Excellence Centre is the executive education wing of Institute of Business Management. F.BENAZIR BHUTTO SHAHEED YOUTH DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM (BBSYDP) Benazir Bhutto Shaheed Youth Development Program (BBSYDP), initiated in 2008-09 by Government of Sindh, has been passed on to Benazir Bhutto Shaheed Human Resource Research & the Development Board (BBSHRRDB). The purpose of this program is to ensure implementation of standardized skill development training.

IoBM has offered its services to provide the training as per agreed terms in the contract which has to be signed before each round subject to acceptance of RFP. IoBM has successfully completed 3 rounds in year 2014, 2015 and 2016. 6. INNOVATION 6.1 ENTREPRENEURSHIP CENTER Objectives 

To develop students as employment creators rather than as employment seekers



Core courses focusing exclusively on entrepreneurship in the BBA program now intends to inspire and enable students to practically initiate startups on experimental stages. Experiential learning content of these courses would help in attaining the following objectives: 

Increasing the component of experiential learning in Entrepreneurship Courses through real life observations and practice of the entrepreneurs.

Enable students to experience the pressures and relevance of MBA concepts in an entrepreneurial venture when the cash flows start biting into the performance.

6.1.1 IOBM BUSINESS INCUBATOR IoBM Business Incubator provides a network of entrepreneurial leaders for mentoring of the entrepreneurship students. The business incubator bridges with engineering programs at other institutions also to identify new product ideas from their final year projects to convert them into new ventures. This is done with an intention to contribute in the development of the economy and industry by developing employment creators. The projects worthy of funding from the Equity Fund are identified from the pool of incubates, who are facilitated in their proposals and the documentation for utilizing the Equity Fund available to take their startup to the next level.

6.1.3 ACTIVITIES OF ENTREPRENEURSHIP CENTER Following activities are being done at and planned present in the above inspire and enable students to walk on an entrepreneurial path. 

Mentoring: One-on-one mentoring of each student of the entrepreneurship course with an assigned entrepreneur.



Workshops on entrepreneurship related topics



Guest speaking sessions by entrepreneurs



A semester end exhibition of all entrepreneurship projects that students do in the entrepreneurship courses this semester. The projects are evaluated by the industry entrepreneurs.



Meet the Young CEO program. The objective is to make being an entrepreneur more prestigious.



Teaching Effectiveness of the Entrepreneurship Courses: Base-line survey of all the students of the entrepreneurship courses at the start of the semester. A few questions regarding their willingness to go for entrepreneurship. With a follow-up questionnaire at the end of the semester to see what impact has the course made on their willingness to take risk.



Research project: To develop an understanding of the local entrepreneurial tendencies and dynamics, along with the challenges and their remedies.



7. COMMUNITY SERVICES Establishment of a Social Entrepreneurship and Development Center helps in creating a concrete social impact on the society and the development of a constructive mindset. The experiential learning projects undertaken through the now mandatory BBA course of Social Advocacy and Community Empowerment provides a platform for the following initiatives: 

Development of micro-businesses through the community service course requirements.



Projects for addressing the social ills of the society such as lack of time management, management of commitments, ethical relationships etc.



Development of expertise in the establishment and management of NGOs

7.1 IOBM OUTREACH PROGRAM FOR LESS PRIVILEGED STUDENTS The Institute of Business Management (IoBM), on the eve of completion of its two decades, successfully launched Four Year Fully Funded Engineering Education leading to Degree Program of Bachelor of Electrical Engineering and Bachelor of Industrial Engineering along with monthly stipend of Rs.7000/- from Fall Semester 2015 having the distinction of being first private university in Sindh to launch such program for deserving and meritorious students from less privileged areas of Sindh.

In the first phase the program started from fall semester 2015 for first batch of candidates of district Tharparkar, Umerkot, Badin, Thatta and Sujawal. Forty candidates were shortlisted after preliminary screening test at their respective district headquarter. They attended Six Week Preparatory Classes for which adequate arrangements were made for their free lodging and boarding at IoBM campus. After qualifying the Aptitude Test Sixteen candidates were admitted to Four Year Fully Funded Engineering Education leading to Degree Program of Bachelor of Electrical Engineering and Bachelor of Industrial Engineering along with monthly stipend.

Looking to the successful launching of the Outreach Program the IoBM Management extended the program for its 2nd Batch to District Sanghar and District Lasbela of Baluchistan. Forty Five candidates shortlisted after preliminary screening test attended Four Week Preparatory Classes at IoBM Campus. After qualifying the IoBM Aptitude Test Eighteen candidates have been admitted to Four Year Fully Funded Engineering Degree Program from Spring Semester (January 2017).

8. REMUNERATION POLICIES 8.1 CONSULTANCY AND TRAINING FOR EXECUTIVE AND PROFESSIONALS Overview IoBM offers opportunity to its faculty to conduct Executive and Professional Training Programs. These programs are initiated and /or administered by ORIC/ Entrepreneurship & Management Excellence Centre, the executive education wing of IoBM. Objectives 

To enhance expertise of faculty to come up to the level demanded by industry executives



To establish a network of industry executives that can lead to further collaborations and linkages



Recognition of the Institute by positioning of faculty expertise to specific target segments



Feedback for creating industry relevance of curriculum and faculty research

Process to be followed by Faculty wishing to be engaged in consultancy: Prepare the training workshop/program proposal as one of the options that follow: 

Respond to a Request for Proposal identified by ORIC or



Identify the Request for Proposal and inform ORIC accordingly

In case of the training program marketed by the faculty, 40% of the revenue generated shall be kept by IoBM.

In case of the training program marketed by EMEC, 40 % of the revenue generated shall be given to the faculty.

8.2 IoBM PUBLICATION POLICY IoBM encourages, supports and promotes researchers’ to publish their research papers in HEC recognized Journal and Thomson Reuters (ISI) Journals. For this IoBM has adopted excellence measures for the faculty through the rewards for high-quality research publications.

8.2.1 Remuneration for Publications i. Remuneration for Local Journals: Rate of remuneration is different depending up on the category of research Journal.

For example: If the research paper is published in W category journal then the Prof, Associate Prof and Assistant Professor will get the 100% amount of one paid course .

Following are rates of the paid courses: Prof: 1150/- per hour (45*1150= Rs.51, 750/-) Associate prof: 1060/- per hour (45*1060=Rs.47, 700/-) Assistant Professor: 1000/- per hour (45*1000=45,000/-)

Remuneration for local category Journals: W and X Category Journals 100% Equivalent to paid course Prof, Associate Prof and Assistant Professor will get 100% amount equivalent to one paid course for 45 credit hours as mentioned in above rate statement.

Y Category Journal 50% of the paid Course Prof, Associate Prof and Assistant Professor will get 50 % amount equivalent to one paid course for 45 credit hours as mentioned in above rate statement.

Z Category Journal 40% of the paid Course Prof, Associate Prof and Assistant Professor will get 40 % amount equivalent to one paid course for 45 credit hours as mentioned in above rate statement

If the research paper is a joint Publication, following rates/ratios will apply: a. Just one Author 100 % payment b. For two authors rates/ration will be 67:33 c.

For Three Authors rates/ratios will be 50:25:25

2. ISI Indexed Journals:

Following are rates of the paid course of 1.5 paid courses: Prof: 1150/- per hour (67.5*1150= Rs.77, 625 /-) Associate prof: 1060/- per hour (67.5*1060=Rs.71, 550/-) Assistant Professor: 1000/- per hour (67.5*1000=67,500/-)

Impact Factor 0.1 to 0.5 =1.5 paid Courses If the research paper is published in the journal having an impact factor of 0.1 to 0.5 then Prof, Associate Prof and Assistant Professor will get the amount equivalent to one and half of paid course which will be equivalent to 67.5 credit hours as mentioned in above rate statement

Impact Factor 0.5 to 01 = 02 paid Courses If the research paper is published in the journal having an impact factor of 0.5 to 01 then Prof, Associate Prof and Assistant Professor will get the amount equivalent to two paid course which will be equivalent to 90 credit hours

Impact factor more than 1 = 2.5 paid Courses If the research paper is published in the journal having an impact factor more than 01 then Prof, Associate Prof and Assistant Professor will get the amount equivalent to two and half paid course which will be equivalent to 112.5 credit hours

If the research paper is in a joint Publication, following rates/ratios will apply: a. Just one author 100% Payment b. For two Author rates/ration will be 67:33 c. For Three Authors rates/ratios will be 50:25:25

8.3 CONFERENCE PAPER PRESENTATION POLICY IoBM encourages faculty members to present papers in the conferences. The Institute sponsors registration fee, Travel, Accommodation and Visa Cost (as per policy) to the faculty Members once a year for International & National conferences.
