MESSAGE FROM THE MINISTER South Africa is a treasure trove of tourism delights. High on the list is the friendliness and warmth of our people. Our tourist offerings are just as diverse as our people. We boast vibrant music and dance, fine arts and crafts, film and photography, and fashion and design that shape and define us as a nation. Our museums and theatres, our festivals and events, and the abundance of sport and leisure activities make up this valuable offering. These are unique jewels which reflect our rich history, culture, heritage and spectacular beauty.

Ndola

Amongst our various niche markets, the role of sports tourism is rapidly growing in significance. Sports tourism has become a growing global phenomenon and an increasingly growing market. The growth of sports tourism has been driven by increased global interest in sporting events on the back of the massive expansion in satellite and digital coverage. South Africa has more than 500 golf courses of international standard located in the nine provinces and our country is widely known as a golfing destination of note. We are host to a significant number of various tournaments that attract international attention. Indeed, the relationship between sport and tourism is symbiotic. While sport furthers tourism by offering an ever increasing range of valued visitor experiences, tourism provides the spectacular backdrop against which to host these events. Come and experience it for yourself. We look forward to welcoming you to our greens and wishing you a happy tee-off! Derek Hanekom Minister of Tourism

FROM RUNWAY TO FAIRWAY Four times a week

South Africa was made for golf. With a perfect climate and a wealth of incredible landscapes, the country boasts some of the most beautiful and unique golf courses on earth. Not only is our country stunning, it has also bred some of the best golfers the world has seen, many of whom have gone on to design their own courses. Two of South African golfing legends, Gary Player’s courses, were named in the leading US golf magazine, Golf Digest’s top 100 golf courses in the world, earlier this year. They are Leopard Creek, on the border of the world famous Kruger National Park and The Links at Fancourt, near George in the Western Cape. These and other leading courses attract a number of global golfing events, including numerous European Tour events to South Africa each year, bringing top golfers to the country, and in turn, showcasing the destination to golfing enthusiasts from around the world. But it is not only the quality of our courses, and the uniqueness of our golfing experiences that sets South Africa apart as a golfing destination. South Africa is definitely a fun destination that offers golfing enthusiasts an array of the best accommodation, cuisine, and tourist activities at very competitive prices. So, whether it is golf in Mpumalanga or Limpopo against the backdrop of our lush green scenery or you are taking time to enjoy our thousands of kilometres of dramatic coastline, I trust that your stay here with us will give you the opportunity to discover South Africa for yourself. I promise you that it is not just what you see on the course that you will remember. I am certain that you will be touched by the warm-hearted South African people, our rich culture and deep history. You will not only see South Africa, but your experience of our country will be enhanced in all that you will taste, smell and hear. I guarantee you that the beautiful experience you will have in our country will live on in your memory and bring you back again. Thulani Nzima SOUTH AFRICAN TOURISM CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICER

forward by fair trade tourism What could Maropeng, a boutique hotel and visitor attraction, located in the Cradle of Humankind, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and De Zalze Golf Course, situated in the picturesque winelands of Stellenbosch, possibly have in common? Both businesses are featured in the 2015 edition of South Africa Golf and Leisure Vacations and both are certified by Fair Trade Tourism (FTT), a non-profit organisation established in South Africa in 2004 to promote responsible tourism. Tourism businesses that adhere to the FTT standard use the FTT label as a way of signifying their commitment to fair and responsible tourism. This includes fair wages and working conditions, fair purchasing and operations, equitable distribution of benefits and respect for human rights, culture and the environment. The Fair Trade Tourism label is not only available for accommodation and attractions such as Maropeng, activities such as De Zalze Golf Course, but also facilities such as spas, food services such as gourmet restaurants, and volunteer programmes (“voluntourism”), an increasingly popular way of combining travel with an opportunity to “give back”. A look at the list of FTT-certified tourism businesses found on the website www.fairtrade.travel reveals an astoundingly diverse portfolio. The common thread is the ethos underpinning the operations of all of these businesses. Travellers to southern Africa can now truly have it all – the ultimate in biodiversity, with the region’s wealth of fauna and flora, a rich cultural heritage, an epicurean delight of food and wines, a burgeoning array of both “hard” and “soft” adventures – and the peace of mind that their holiday has made a positive contribution to the people and the places that made their holiday happen. As the offerings in this book expand beyond the shores of South Africa, so too has the FTT certification programme, with the possibility of a Fair Trade Holiday now also encompassing Madagascar and soon to include regions as diverse as Namibia, Mozambique and Tanzania.

Can sustainable tourism and luxur y travel be compatible – or do they lie at the opposite ends of the travel spectrum? It is the firm belief of Fair Trade Tourism (FTT), that the two not only can but should go hand in glove. Being a responsible traveller means having an amazing experience while at the same time giving back to the people and the environment you have visited. It is a commitment to honouring the people and places that made your holiday happen. Featured below are some of FTT certified businesses in the luxury portfolio: GROOTBOS PRIVATE NATURE RESERVE

COAT OF ARMS This state emblem is the highest visual symbol of the State. The Coat of Arms is also a central part of the Great Seal, the highest emblem of the State. South Africa’s Coat of Arms was launched on Freedom Day, 27 April 2000, reflecting the government's aim to highlight the democratic change in South Africa and a new sense of patriotism.

SOUTH AFRICAN FLAG The national flag was first used on 27 April 1994. The design and colours are a synopsis of principal elements of the country's flag history. Individual colours, or colour combinations represent different meanings for different people and therefore no universal symbolism should be attached to any of the colours.

Water Tap water is potable. However, ensure that you take bottled water with you when travelling to remote rural areas and the bush.

The central design of the flag, can be interpreted as the convergence of diverse elements within South African society, taking the road ahead in unity. NATIONAL ANTHEM Nkosi Sekelel' iAfrika and Die Stem /The Call of South Africa were merged in 1997 to form the current anthem. It is the only neo-modal national anthem in the world, by virtue of being the only one that starts in one key and finishes in another. The lyrics employ the five most populous of South Africa's eleven official languages – isiXhosa (first stanza, first two lines), isiZulu (first stanza, last two lines), seSotho (second stanza), Afrikaans (third stanza) and English (final stanza).

Electricity The South African electricity supply is 220/230 volts AC 50 HZ. With a few exceptions (in deep rural areas) electricity is available almost everywhere. HEALTH AND SAFETY South Africa is well-known for its medical skill since Professor Christiaan Barnard performed the first successful heart transplant in 1967. There are many world-class private hospitals and medical centres around the country, especially in the urban centres. Most of South Africa is malaria-free, but always check with the game reserves you're planning to visit and take precautions if necessary. Make sure you have the latest safety tips from the establishment where you will be staying and take common sense precautions as you would when travelling anywhere.

NATIONAL BIRD: BLUE CRANE The Blue Crane (Anthropoides paradisea), today critically endangered, is a tall, grounddwelling bird of the crane family. It stands a little over a metre high and is pale blue-gray in colour with a white crown, a pink bill, and long, dark gray wingtip feathers which trail to the ground. The Blue Crane is very special to the amaXhosa, calling it indwe. A man distinguished by deeds of valour, or meritorious conduct during battle, was often decorated with feathers by a chief. The chief would organised an ukundzabela ceremony at which Blue Crane feathers would be presented. Men honoured wore the feathers sticking out of their hair, were known as men of ugaba (trouble). When trouble arose, these men would reinstate peace and order. NATIONAL FISH: GALJOEN The Galjoen (Coracinus capensis), a game fighter, is found only along the coast of South Africa mostly in shallow water, rough surf, known to every angler. Near rocks, Galjoen is almost black, while in sandy areas the colour is silver-bronze. In KwaZulu-Natal, also known as blackfish or black bream. Record size is over 55 cm and 7 kg, however the average is much smaller. Its scales are very firmly attached and its fins are well-developed with prominent spines.

NATIONAL ANIMAL: THE SPRINGBOK The Springbok (Antidorcas marsupialis) (Afrikaans: spring = jump; bok = antelope, deer, or goat) is a small brown and white gazelle standing about 75 cm high. The males weigh up to 50 kg and females up to 37 kg. Springbok have a pocket-like skin flap which extends along the middle of the back on to the tail. When lifting this flap, the white hairs underneath stand up in a conspicuous 'fan'. NATIONAL FLOWER: PROTEA The King Protea, (Protea cynaroides), flower head is the largest Protea genus. Also known as Giant Protea, Honeypot or King Sugar Bush, it is widely distributed in the Cape fynbos region, with varieties in colour and leaf shapes. 92% of the species occur only in the Cape Floral Region, a narrow belt of mountainous coastal land from Clanwilliam to Grahamstown, South Africa.

NATIONAL TREE: THE YELLOWWOOD Real Yellowwood is primeval and present in South Africa for more than 100 million years, widespread from Table Mountain, the southern and eastern Cape coast, Drakensberg ravines, the Soutpansberg and the Blouberg in Limpopo. In forests, they can grow up to 40 m in height with the trunk base sometimes up to 3 m in diameter. In contrast, trees growing in unsheltered places are often short, bushy and gnarled.

THE BIG FIVE Lion, Leopard, Elephant, Rhinoceros and Buffalo. The term "Big Five" was coined by big game hunters describing the most difficult animals in Africa to hunt on foot. THE little FIVE

The bark of the real yellowwood is khakicoloured to grey when it is old, deeply split and peels off in strips.

Each of the "little" species is a contradiction in size to the well-known Big Five animals in Africa. One part of each of the Little Five English name's relates to one of the famous bigger five animals.

The crown is relatively small in relation to its height and is often covered with grey lichen. Male and female cones resemble pine cones, white, light green or pink.

South Africa has some of the world's richest biodiversity hotspots, with remarkable birdlife, abundant buck, small game and bizarre insects.

THE ANT LION (Myrmeleontidae) is an odd yet familiar feature of the bushveld. It digs conical depressions in dry, soft sand with which to trap ants, its prey. In advanced stages this larvae-like creature has wings and sometimes resembles a dragonfly, although not well-adapted for flight. Ant lions are normally found at night, in search of a mate. The adult are rarely seen in the wild because typically they are active in the evening. RED-BILLED BUFFALO WEAVERS (Bubarlornis niger) are social birds that build their nests in the forked branches of tall trees. They nest in open colonies and are a noisy and busy lot. The weavers' nests can be recognised by their bedraggled state, made from coarse grasses and untidy twig structures. These birds are the easiest of the little five to find and observe.

THE RHINOCEROS BEETLE (Scarabaeinae dynastinae) is one of the largest beetles in southern Africa, with horns on its head much like those of its larger namesake. Both males and females are horned, using these to dig, climb and mate. Only males use their horns to fight rivals. THE LEOPARD TORTOISE (Geochelone pardalis) with its black and yellow spotted shell are a striking feature in the bushveld, living close to water. Males are larger than the females. A mature leopard tortoise can weigh over 23 kg, with a shell circumference of up to one meter. Younger tortoises have dark brown patterns, while adult shells take on shades of yellow with somewhat smaller spots. ELEPHANT SHREWS (Elephantulus myurus) named for its elongated snout, are found all over South Africa. This tiny insectivore lives in arid lowlands, rocky outcrops and savannah grasslands. They feed on insects, fruit, seeds and nuts. They in turn are food for snakes and raptors, making them shy and wary. If you see an elephant shrew before an elephant, you can count your safari a real success!

Gauteng: quick facts

Free State: quick facts

Eastern Cape: quick facts

Northern Cape: quick facts

North West: quick facts

Western Cape: quick facts

Gauteng, in Sesotho means "place of gold", and produces 40% of the world’s golf reserves. With only 1.4% of South Africa's land area, the tiny province of Gauteng punches way above its weight, contributing 33% to the national economy and a phenomenal 10% to the GDP of the entire African continent.

The Free State lies in the heart of South Africa, with the Kingdom of Lesotho nestling in the hollow of its bean-like shape. Lying between the Vaal River in the north and the Orange River in the south, the region is one of flat, rolling grassland and crop fields, rising to lovely sandstone mountains in the northeast, and is the granary of South Africa and houses the Supreme Court of Appeal, in Mangaung (Bloemfontein).

The Eastern Cape, lying on the southeastern South African coast, is a region of great natural beauty, particularly the rugged cliffs, rough seas and dense green bush of the stretch known as the Wild Coast. The province is the hub of South Africa's motor industry, earmarked as a key area for growth and economic development, with two harbours and four airports.

The vast and arid Northern Cape is the largest province, taking up nearly a third of South Africa's land area. Yet it has the country's smallest population, around 1 million people, with an extremely roomy population density of three people per square kilometre. The province lies to the south of the mighty Orange River. Carnarvon is home to the Square Kilometre Array (SKA) and Sutherland the site of the southern hemisphere's largest astronomical observatory, SALT.

North West lies in the north of South Africa on the Botswana border, and fringed by the Kalahari desert in the west. It is known as the Platinum Province for the wealth of the metal it has underground. Two of SA's eight Unesco World Heritage sites fall within North West: the Vredefort Dome, the world's largest visible meteor-impact crater, and the Taung hominid fossil site, at the Cradle of Humankind.

Cape Town nestles in the curve of Table Mountain at the start of the hook-shaped Cape Peninsula, which ends in the jagged cliffs of Cape Point. The Western Cape lies on southern tip of Africa. The most-southern point is at Cape Agulhas, some 200 km east of Cape Town. Home to the smallest of the world's six floral kingdoms, the Cape Floral Kingdom, characterised by fynbos and the protea family, contains more plant species than the whole of Europe.

The garden province of South Africa, KwaZuluNatal is a subtropical region of lush and wellwatered valleys, washed by the warm Indian Ocean. One of the country's most popular tourist destinations, the province stretches from Port Edward in the south to the borders of Swaziland and Mozambique to the north. The sugar-cane plantations along the Indian Ocean coastal belt are the mainstay of KwaZuluNatal's agriculture.

Limpopo is South Africa's northernmost province, lying within the great curve of the Limpopo River. It is a region of contrasts, from true bushveld country to majestic mountains, primeval indigenous forests, unspoilt wilderness and patchworks of farmland. Besides the Kruger National Park, there are 54 provincial reserves and several luxury private game reserves, and is home to the Mapungubwe Cultural Landscape, one of the country's eight World Heritage sites.

Mpumalanga – "the place where the sun rises" – is a province with spectacular scenic beauty and an abundance of wildlife, lying in the northeast of South Africa, and is bordered by the countries of Mozambique and Swaziland to the east and Gauteng to the west. In the eastern region lies the southern half of the magnificent Kruger National Park, a nature reserve teeming with African wildlife in a total area roughly the size of Israel.

Its ever-present sea views and magnificent beaches are what this holiday destination is all about and its warm-all-year-round weather means you can swim, sunbathe, surf and fish from early spring right through to winter’s end. The North Coast boasts a rich cultural heritage with strong Eastern, African, European and French Mauritian influences, a unique cultural mix, which provides fascinating insights into the history of this part of the world. Glittering natural assets abound. Local and global investors have invested some R2-billion in tourism projects in the past two years. Developers have recognised the value of its unspoilt natural environment and have adopted an approach that puts residents and guests directly in touch with the region’s natural beauty.

VINEYARDS & WINERY The development wine industry in KwaZulu-Natal has moved up a gear with the recent launch of the 1787 wine. The wine is produced in the North Coast of KwaZuluNatal, using cultivars that are suited to the humid coastal conditions. The iLembe Vineyards project is an agroprocessing business with an Agri tourism component. The ultimate goal of the project is to capitalise on the catalytic effect of a vineyard, and the ability to create economically viable projects and industries supporting and surrounding the vineyards. To date 10.1 ha of vines have been planted across three local municipalities. These vines were first harvested in February 2013. The iLembe Cooperative Winery has been built at Collisheen Estate just outside of Ballito and is equipped with machinery that have capacity of producing 120 000 bottles of wine per season. This project has created 49 direct jobs to date. The 1787 Brand is the year of King Shaka’s birth, the founder of the Zulu nation who ruled from the iLembe District. Local farmers with an expert viticulturist produce this dry, easy-drinking white wine, which can be paired with salads and fish. The only wine bottled from vineyards in Maphumulo, Ndwedwe and Mandeni in the iLembe District of KwaZulu-Natal.

Namibian highlights include: • Windhoek the heart and commercial nerve centre. • Located in the Kunene region, Etosha National Park, one of the largest savannah and thorn scrub conservation areas in Africa. Renowned for its spectacular mammal, bird and reptile wildlife it spans 22 270 km² including the Pan, which provides a great, parched, silver-white backdrop of shimmering mirages. After rains the pan contains water, sometimes for only a few days a year, alluring thousands of flamingos. Mokuti Etosha Lodge provides the best value for money, just four minutes from the Etosha National Park. • Be entertained by Swakopmund’s palm-lined streets, seaside promenade, the architecture, fine accommodation, adventure activities, quaint restaurants, cafes, art galleries, museums, a snake park and aquarium. The towns most iconic symbol is. Find the new Strand Hotel at the Swakopmund jetty. • Visit the Cape Cross Seal Colony on the Skeleton Coast. Search for the unique desert rose. The Welwitschia drive reveals some of the Namib’s fauna and flora. Sandboard some of the world’s

highest dunes. The Swakopmund Salt Works and Walvis Bay Lagoon, in season, are frequented by thousands of flamingos. Sossusvlei, a salt and clay pan, hosts red sand dunes almost 400 m high. Despite the harsh desert conditions find a wide variety of plants and animals, adapted to survive. In some years Sossusvlei fills with water creating a momentary oasis. At Naravlei countless cucumber-like melons grow around the edge of the pan, and over 800 year old dead camelthorn trees dot the stark landscape. The Fish River Canyon is Africa’s largest canyon. 160 km long, up to 27 km wide and in places almost 550 m deep, was formed about 500 million years ago, created by water erosion, and collapse of the valley bottom from movements in the earth's crust. The 6045 km² Ai-Ais Richtersveld Transfrontier Park, is one of the most species-rich, arid regions.

Botswana ‘If there were a place where one would wish that time could stand still, it would be Botswana.’

Capital: Gaborone. Main languages: English, Setswana. Size: 581 730 km2. Economy: Diamond mining contributes 45% of the gross national income, while tourism is fast-growing. Currency: Pula. Climate: Semi-arid, hot and dry with summer rainfall.

Whether you do fly-in safaris or overland journeys to remote camps, swamps, pans or desert, the attention provided by your hosts, your Lodge or Camp comfort and experiences, the local ranger-guide knowledge and sounds of the wild, will assure you leave with unforgettable memories.

Some of the most sought after wilderness destinations in the world include: • The Okavango Delta, shaped like a fan, is the world’s largest intact inland delta situated deep within the Kalahari Basin. Filled with heart-stopping excitement of big game viewing, the supreme tranquility, serenity of an untouched delta and evocative scenes present an extraordinary experience. • Moremi Game Reserve including Chief’s Island, is the richest and most diverse ecosystems on the continent. Herbivore and carnivore species and over 400 bird species, many migratory and some endangered makes exploring Moremi’s many loops and trails delightfully inspiring. • The Central Kalahari Game Reserve is the largest, most remotely situated reserve in Southern Africa, and the second largest wildlife reserve in the world.

Undoubtedly one of Africa’s most beautiful rivers, the Chobe supports a diversity and concentration of wildlife. The most accessible and frequently visited of Botswana’s big game country, the Chobe Riverfront is most famous for its large herds of elephants and Cape Buffalo, which converge on the river during the dry winter months. One of its greatest mysteries is the Savuté Channel itself, which has over the past 100 years inexplicably dried up and recommenced its flow several times, explaining the numerous dead trees that line the channel. Largely uninhabited by humans, the Makgadikgadi, with its stark, flat, featureless terrain stretches seemingly to eternity, forming a series of pans. At Sowa and Nata Sanctuaries when there is water, thousands of flamingos, pelicans, ducks and geese congregate, a completely overwhelming spectacle. The Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park is run as a single ecological unit. The terrain comprises fossil river valleys dotted with dwarfed trees and bushes, grasslands and different coloured sand dunes. Wildlife is abundant, and the animals are attracted to waterholes along the otherwise dry riverbed.

The Board of Directors and Members of the PGA of South Africa are very proud of their partners and would like to take this opportunity of thanking them.

the sunshine tour The Sunshine Tour is one of six founding professional golf tours that makes up the International Federation of PGA Tours. Based in South Africa, with several tournaments in neighbouring African states, the Sunshine Tour stages professional tournaments throughout the year. It’s flagship events include the venerable SA Open Championship, the Telkom PGA Championship and SA Masters, while it has seven tournaments that are co-sanctioned with the PGA European Tour. The Sunshine Tour has been the starting point for many professionals who have gone on to dominate the world professional golf and, since World War II, only the USA has produced more Major victories than South Africa. Led by such icons of the game as Gary Player, Ernie Els and Retief Goosen, the Sunshine Tour continues to produce world-beating professionals with the likes of Charl Schwartzel, Louis Oosthuizen and Branden Grace the latest to break through on the world stage. These seven co-sanctioned events include the Tour’s longest-serving sponsor’s Alfred Dunhill Championship, as well as newer events in the Nelson Mandela Championship and the Tshwane Open. Also included as a co-sanctioned event is the Nedbank Golf Challenge, which in 2013 featured an expanded field of 30 of the world’s leading professionals competing for a record prize fund of $6.5-million. New for 2015 will be the first-ever tri-sanctioned event with the Asian and European Tours, the AfrAsia Mauritius Open to be played in early May at Heritage Golf Club in Mauritius. Divided into a summer and winter “swing”, the Sunshine Tour stages tournaments year-round, with the bigger prizemoney events taking place in the summer months from October through March. During the winter months, smaller three-round events with an emphasis on Pro-Am participation take place, with many smaller centres around South Africa being visited. From 2012, these three-round events have been awarded Official World Ranking points, giving South African “stay-at-home” professionals opportunities to improve their world standing and contributing towards being able to qualify for Majors and World Golf Championship events. For visitors to South Africa, professional golf tournaments are easily accessed and boast a standard of play every bit as good as any of the major Tours around the world. Visit www.sunshinetour.com for a full year-round schedule.

A PASSSION FOR

MATKOVICH

EXCELLENCE

Having played competitively on the European, Australasian, and South African Pro Tours, alongside leading players of the time, his abilities combined with his experience and knowledge of turf management, fauna and flora, and how golf is played at all levels, give him the feel and understanding of golf strategy and design.

The Matkovich Group provides a holistic service for golf facilities due to our vast experience in Africa. We offer the following services from within the group, ensuring that the various divisions provide the services to make any golf project a reality. The Matkovich Group offers, amongst others, the following to ensure clubs achieve short and long term objectives.

Peter is passionate about the game. As a golf course design, architect his personal attention guides each site development throughout the whole project. His design philosophy is to “Listen to the land” – the site and nature must determine the shape, style and direction of play on each hole. Every course should have balance in distance, direction, difficulty, and shots required, and offer various options as how to play and set up the course. Preserving and rehabilitating the environment is an essential component within his design philosophy. In 1975, as greenkeeper at Umhlali Country Club, Peter designed his first course. Since then, Peter Matkovich has designed an extraodinary golf course portfolio in SA and abroad.

Nestled in the heart of the beautiful valley on the outskirts of Stellenbosch, lies the prestigious De Zalze Winelands Golf Estate, home of De Zalze Golf Club. The name De Zalze originates from the early wine farmers who produced wines on three adjoining farms, namely Kleine Zalze, Groote Zalze and De Vleie. De Zalze Golf Club has the complete Winelands experience and offers you a great golf course, fantastic 19th hole views, fabulous food, great wines and stylish on-site lodge accommodation making us the preferred all-in-one destination in our region. We have beautiful vineyards, olive groves and lavender fields adjacent to most fairways creating a natural buffer between golf and residences. The landscape is all so natural with the meandering Blaauwklippen River and the incredible views of the surrounding mountains making this Winelands experience very unique. De Zalze Golf Course offers a fine mix of parkland holes moving up and down the undulating valley, its main defences being the water features on several of the holes. The oaklined Blaauwklippen River winds its way through the golf estate and comes into play at various intervals. Renowned golf course architect, Peter Matkovich, designed the De Zalze Golf Course, making most of the stunning setting while placing a premium on accuracy.

A variety of long and short holes, from drivable par fours to monster par fives, make for an enjoyable round with the old adage ‘risk and reward’ ringing in your ears. The golf course welcomes visitors seven days a week and remains one of the most popular venues for golfers who wish to experience golf in the Winelands. Boasting a thatched Cape Dutch style clubhouse, facilities include the Terrace Restaurant, lounge and bar, which stock a fine selection of single malt whiskies. The Golf Lifestyle Shop has an extensive range of clothing and golf accessories and also supplies clubs and carts for hire to all guests and visitors from abroad. De Zalze Golf Club is also the first golf club in South Africa and the world to be Fair Trade accredited by Fair Trade and Tourism South Africa, a testimony to their sustainable triple bottom line operating model.

Royal Cape is without doubt one of the best and most challenging courses to play both in the Western Cape and the country. It is a course of championship stature, first played in 1906. As observers and custodians of the traditions of this wonderful game, the Royal Cape Golf Club, has a keen eye on the future. We accept and embrace changing times and we strive to maintain an enjoyable balance of traditional values and the modern lifestyle. Royal Cape has hosted the South African Open ten times, first in 1910. Gary Player won in 1965 when he became the first player to break 70 in all four rounds, a record. In 1996 Ernie Els birdied the last three holes winning by one shot.

The course is on flat terrain. Playing at Royal Cape is subject to three of nature’s beguiling offerings: a near constant wind to challenge, sweeping mountain views to charm you and water features to ensnare you, playing to a championship par 72. Tree lined with narrow fairways and subtle USGA spec built greens, the Royal Cape presents a traditional test of golf. The numerous ponds and lakes teeming with bird life provide beauty and distraction along the way. The clubhouse retains its old style charm and traditional design, modernised many times since 1923. Facing the course are the lounge, Centenary room and members bar as well as the gallery corridor with its many framed photographs, paintings and memorabilia celebrating the Club’s long history.

Perspectives on conserving our Heritage Human development is not something we can stop. What we can do is try to minimise the negative effects on the natural environment and traditional communities. You could, for instance, bulldoze a highway through a wetland (and this has been too often done), or could take the route around the wetland. You could build a safari lodge and take all the profits yourself, or you could enter into a partnership with the local community which de facto owns the land and will ensure the survival of the natural environment and wild animals; the corollary is, exclude them and you’ll lose it all. Talking of green places, few places are greener, at first glance anyways, than a golf course. The environmental scientist in me, however, tells me they are not always. To be fair, golf is a great game but golf courses use up enormous amounts of available water and leech large amounts of chemical nutrients into the ground water. In a cost-benefit way it all balances out, but it’s always struck me that we could be doing better here. There’s a concept in conservation known as a green corridor. It’s something the wine industry is catching on to and it’s something golf courses could too. The idea is that where humans alter the natural environment in a not-too drastic way (like vineyards or golf courses), they leave or create natural corridors to allow a bit of nature back in. Some courses already do it in lesser or greater amounts. And how cool is it to loft your drive over a snoozing antelope or crocodile, have a hornbill chirp you about your swing, then chip over some herons wading in the water hazard! If we cannot find ways of letting nature into our lives and into our games, maybe we don’t deserve them. Think of it like trading carbon credits: you offset your impact on the natural world by planting trees, paying someone else to plant them. Or by allowing the natural vegetation to persist in the roughs, along any (and every) natural watercourse, as well as in a buffer around each course. Crazy idea this year, a trend next and often law thereafter. Tell your friends you thought about it first. Who thought that during our lifetimes, having cut up the continent and fenced it into smaller and smaller areas where game is being choked to death, we would see the creation of super game reserves, or “transfrontier” parks as they are now called. Not just one, but nearly 10 of them now link vast tracts of game areas across political borders. Organisations like African Parks, are rescueing abandoned game parks around Africa and revitalising them with community buy-in.

“What is the good of having a nice house without a decent planet to put it on?” – Henry David Thoreau

If each one us would just do a little good, and stop doing something a little bad – things as simple as turning off lights, lowering your carbon usage, and taking your next holiday to a proven eco resort, and thinking of installing a solar geyser in your home, it would add up to a lot of good for our children’s children to inherit. But even if you don’t care for them, the world will become be a better place for you – and for me.

ABOUT David Bristow “Family and friends have been telling him for decades that he really should get a proper job. But, David reckons it’s way too late now – having spent nearly 40 years travelling Africa, writing about and photographing its wild places. For 13 of those he was editor of Getaway travel magazine, and for the rest he’s been producing books, like Africa’s Finest, which features the continent’s greenest safari destinations. Currently David is working on African Icons, or “the best book ever about Africa’s best places”. It will feature his list of Africa’s 21 must-see wild places, embellished with Roger de la Harpe’s photographs.

the cradle of humankind, maropeng

World Heritage Sites belong to all humanity. UNESCO identifies sites of cultural and natural value. Preservation is determined by stringent selection criteria. Eight scenic and cultural treasures have been declared South African World Heritage Sites: 1999, 2005: Cradle of Humankind (25º 55’ 45” S 27º 47’ 20” E) Sterkfontein, Kromdraai, has 950 hominid fossil specimens, evidence of human evolution over the last 3.5-million years and brings insight about the earliest ancestors of humankind. 1999: Robben Island (33º 48’ S 18º 22’ E), became infamous as a maximum-security prison for anti-apartheid activists including Nelson Mandela. It has become a universal symbol of freedom. 1999: The iSimangaliso Wetland Park (27º 50’ 20” S 32º 33’ E). St. Lucia estuary is one of the largest in Africa and includes the continent’s southernmost coral reefs, wide submarine canyons, sandy beaches, forested dunes and a mosaic of wetlands, grasslands, forests, lakes and savannah. Find nesting turtles on the beaches; migrating whales, dolphins and whale-sharks offshore; and breeding colonies of pelicans, storks, herons and terns. 2000: The uKhahlamba Drakensberg Park (S29 22 59.988 E29 32 26.016) is SA’s watershed. Through 4 000 years, the indigenous San, created the largest collection of African rock art. Diverse habitats protect endemic and threatened species, especially birds and plants. 2003: Mapungubwe (22º 11’ 33” S 29º 14’ 20” E), an ancient civilization near our northern borders, exposes almost untouched remains of their palace, entire settlement area, and two earlier capitals, dating between 1300 to 1220AD. 2004: The Cape Floral Region (34º 10’ S 18º 22’ 30” E) from the Cape Peninsula to the Eastern Cape, takes up 0.04% of the world’s land, contains 3% of the earth’s plant species; is home to nearly 20% of Africa’s flora, is home to 9 600 vascular plants species, with 70% endemic. The region has 11 000 marine animal species, 3 500 are endemic, and 560 vertebrate species, including 142 reptile species, of which 27 are endemic. 2005: Vredevort Dome (26º 51’ 36” S 27º 15’ 36” E) is an impact crater formed 2-billion years ago. A 10 km in diameter meteorite hit earth. The impact scar measures 380 km across and consists of three concentric circles of uplifted rock, only 180 km are visible. 2007: The Richtersveld Cultural and Botanical Desert Landscape (28º 36’ S 17º 12’ 14” E), is home to semi-nomadic Nama. Khoisan collectively describes the Khoi, known as Hottentots who were pastoralists and effectively annihilated; and the San, or Bushmen, were huntergatherers, some still lives in SA. www.southafrica.net, http://whc.unesco.org/en/statesparties/za, image credits © UNESCO.

This marine protected area is transformed into one of the world’s most important nursery areas for Southern Right Whales between June and November each year – at times viewing more than 50 whales in a single sighting. The 36 000 ha De Hoop Nature Reserve is a safe, outdoor destination

Let the magic of Kagga Kamma replenish your Soul … In 1986 three individuals saw the potential and purchased the enchanting and secluded 15 000 ha farm properties. Soon a small stone cottage was built to allow the owners to entertain friends. In 1988, Kagga Kamma became a Nature Reserve. For effective water resource management the adjacent farm Grootvlei was bought in 1989. The first chalets were then built and several antelope species were introduced. Kagga Kamma has grown into a luxurious resort, offering something for everyone, continuously striving to offer guests memorable experiences. Stylish accommodation is provided in Cave Suites, an Outcrop Open Air Room and in luxurious thatched ‘Rondavels’. Fine dining, exclusive tours and activities, are offered on an all inclusive basis.

In 2013 Kagga Kamma was awarded the RCI Green Award for installing a Solar Photovoltaic hybrid energy system. This installation provides environmentally friendly power to the entire resort and reduces the resort's carbon footprint. The absolute tranquillity of this unique Cederberg wilderness is part of the Cape's indigenous ‘fynbos’ region. Various of the local fauna sightings are rarely seen in other parts of the country. Kagga Kamma offers guided 4 x 4 and quad bike safaris, hiking trails and star gazing at the mini Observatory. Whilst relaxing at the resort’s swimming pool, guests can marvel at the rock formations partially surrounding this area. The Spa offers exclusive wellness treatments to relax and rejuvenate. MESSAGE FROM THE CAPE WINEMAKERS GUILD The South African wine industry has achieved substantial growth within the past 20 years since Democracy. Exports have, for example increased exponentially from 50 million litres in 1994 to more than 500 million litres by the end of 2013 this is a fantastic story. The industry is now ready for its next growth curve. Currently the South African wine industry is still fragmented in its nature. In order to be more globally competitive, an industry-wide effort is needed to be launched that will have to address issues such as technology, production capacity, quality of our South African product, transformation and access to global markets. Despite a challenging 2014 season characterised by high, and in some instances untimely rainfall, the South African wine industry had an average sized, good quality wine grape harvest, with exceptional harvests in especially the coastal regions. As the Chairman of The Cape Winemakers Guild Protégés program, I have confidence that the wine industry in future will continue to uphold its high standards. The program offers protégés the opportunity to learn specialised skills and processes, from sourcing grapes and selecting barrels to the art of producing quality wines. The members encourage the young winemakers to reach their full potential by cultivating, nurturing and empowering the promising individuals to become winemakers of distinction. All the Protégés have the opportunity to make their own wine during their internships. The programme plays an active role in the transformation of the wine industry to ensure its long term health and sustainability within South Africa. Through maintaining our collective philosophy of being a world class contender and striving for perfection, we have become one of the great wine destinations in the world. It is truly an honour for me to be part of the South African wine industry. Louis Strydom Chairman of the Cape Winemakers Guild Development Trust; Winemaker at Ernie Els Wines

Groot Constantia the Cape’s oldest and most famous wine farms dating back to. The Groot Constantia trademark is one of the oldest surviving trademarks in the world today serving as a testimony of continuous quality wine production over centuries. Therefore, wines and heritage remain at the heart of the Constantia Valley. The land was granted to Simon van der Stel, 891 morgen (about 763 ha), situated behind Table Mountain, which he named “Constantia”. The farm had several owners of which two were female. The Cloete family put Groot Constantia on the map from 1778 to 1885. Constantia wine was coveted across the globe and those who were fortunate enough to taste it soon refused to settle for anything less. Members of the British Royal House, Napoleon Bonaparte, King Louis Philippe of France, Frederick (The Great) of Prussia, the Lord Seventeen of the VOC, governors, admirals, captains, and many other dignitaries coveted the Constantia label. Considering that they have been making wine for 325 years from some of the very

first vines planted in the Cape – in what can only be described as the perfect natural conditions and under the watchful eye of the winemakers – it becomes clear why Groot Constantia wines have become legendary and unique. The estate today, covers 170 ha, of which 96 ha is under vines. Over the last 10 years Groot Constantia has won 65 gold medals for a variety of its wines. Groot Constantia stands as a pinion of excellence for the South African wine industry and is an ideal model for the preservation of the cultural and historical heritage of the country. The farm has a wonderful array of things to do and see: visit the Manor House and Cloete Cellar dating back to 1791. Daily cellar tours and wine tasting as well as guided vineyard tours, two outstanding restaurants (Simon’s and Jonkershuis), as well as an art gallery displaying the paintings of local artists. As one of Cape Town’s Big Six tourist attractions, with over 300 000 estate visitors annually, they are part of the Hop-on-Hop-off city sightseeing bus route.

Ernie is passionate about the wine industry and from the very first vintage appointed experienced winemaker Louis Strydom to head up the production of his fine wines. Ernie’s passion for these wines, combined with winemaker Louis Strydom’s considerable talent, has proved a winning combination. Since its launch in 1999, Ernie Els Wines has established a magnificent portfolio of red and white wines, offering quality wines for everyone at various different pricepoints. Ernie Els Wines has won plaudits and many prestigious awards around the world and the team continues to make a big impact on both the South African and

international wine markets. Louis Strydom, one of the leading winemakers in the South African wine industry for almost 20 years, and now the former Chairman of the Cape Winemakers Guild, plays a key role. “I’m excited about taking the Ernie Els Wines brand forward,” commented Louis. “We are here to show the true potential of the Ernie Els terroir and cellar ability, and to make Ernie Els Wines more available to a wider spectrum of consumer.” Louis has produced the only South African wine that has been nominated four years consecutively as one of the Top 100 wines in the world. The vision for the future of Ernie Els Wines lies in “driving Cabernet Sauvignon”, the grape variety that performs so well in this area of Stellenbosch known as the “Golden Triangle”. Cabernet Sauvignon features prominently in most of the red wines produced from the property, and more often than not, is the cornerstone of the red blends. The vision is for Ernie Els Wines to become the benchmark Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet-based blends producer in South Africa.

CAPE POINT VINEYARDS

With wildlife and a view to make anyone green with envy, it is no wonder that visitors plan their entire vacation schedule around a single round of golf at some of the finest fairways set in breathtaking locations around the Garden Route. The differences in scenery, geography and style ensure that you can play for days without being bored. Neighbouring the golf estates you will find 16 wine farms and estates to tickle your taste buds whilst dining or visiting various wine growers’ tasting rooms, during your stay. The Plett Winelands are producing award winning wines and Méthode Cap Classique sparkling wines. This is one of South Africa’s newest wine of origin regions and they are producing a variety of cultivars, including Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Rosé, along with the expanding Méthode Cap Classique varieties. Peter Thorpe, a pioneering wine maker, discovered a piece of land with characteristic gentle slopes and cool

sea breezes in The Crags area 14 years ago. Shortly thereafter he planted the first vines, believing the tepid climate and the soil conditions were excellent for vine growth. The first vines, Sauvignon Blanc, were planted in 2000 and over the years Plett has seen a growth of 16 new vineyards in the region. 200 000 bottles are produced annually, with the Sauvignon Blanc being considered equal to the one that is produced on the Malborough estates in New Zealand, not only for its climatic and geographic characteristics, but for the style of new aged wines which are changing perceptions of wine and bubbly, making local indeed ‘lekker’. Set in the valleys and hills from Harkerville in the west to the Crags in the east, the vineyards are framed by the Indian Ocean on the south side and the Tsitsikamma Mountains to the north – an extraordinary natural amphitheatre which will come alive with the launch of the Plett Winelands Trails in May 2015.

The views from the spacious deck, of the vineyards, the mountains towards Chapman’s Peak and Noordhoek beach will take your breath away. Guests opting for a leisurely lunch or dinner at the Cape Point Vineyards Restaurant will be charmed by its stylish, comfortable interiors and the relaxed ambience. This new restaurant with its warm, personal service, superb food and wine offering, no doubt, is set to make waves in this corner of the Cape Peninsula. The Cape Point Vineyards Restaurant is open for lunch between 12:00 and 14:30 on weekends, and on Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday evenings during the week. Dinner is served from 19:00 to 21:00 on Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays. In summer gourmet picnic baskets can be pre-ordered, offering excellent value at R395 per basket for two. Delicious Cheese and Charcuterie Platters (between R195 and R250 per platter) present a generous serving for two people.

At the new Tasting Room next to the Restaurant, sharing space on the stylish and comfortable deck with the restaurant, taste winemaker Duncan Savage’s awardwinning wines. The Tasting room is open from 10:00 to 18:00 daily, except for Thursdays when it closes at 15:00 (just before the Noordhoek Community Market commences).
