How to get a Functional Grip The Grip is one of the most important aspects when playing golf. The grip connects you to the clubface. The clubface is what makes contact with the ball and if one has a marginal grip then a lot of compensation takes place to hit the ball well and straight. The classic expression known to most is to have a text book grip. I still however have not seen the measurements to a text book hand. Most golfers also ask what does my grip look like. I am more interested in what your grip does. So this brings me to how to get a functional grip? I use this term as I want the grip to have a purpose and this is to connect you to the club head but must also allow you to functionally move the club head in any direction. In the golf swing the club head moves laterally and vertically. To find a functional grip one just has to turn the club around. Put the grip part away from you and the head of the club just out the back of your hand. Try this in your right hand first. You want to assume a fencing position so you can then move the end of the club in any direction. (The end now being the rubber grip of your club) Do this with your right hand and then with your left. Once you have a feel for this then put both hands on the back of the club and see if you have control of the far end. The club head will act as a counter balance and put your wrists into a position where they will work correctly in the swing. You will notice the shaft will run very closely to your fingers and will not run through the palm. You will also have your thumb and forefinger doing most of the work. They are your feel and control. Now turn the club back into a normal position and take up your grip but try and feel the grip more towards your fingers. This will allow you to functionally move the club head in any direction hence giving you more control.
