Equestrians choose St. Andrews for our strong academics and our nationally recognized equestrian program. St. Andrews is strongly committed to providing a life-transforming educational opportunity which is practical in its application, global in its scope, and multi-disciplinary in its general education core.

Depth of knowledge and expertise are acquired through theoretical study and practical application. Many equine classes meet at the barn for a truly experiential learning experience.

Recent graduates are active in many aspects of the equestrian industry. They are pursuing careers ranging from teaching and training in private preparatory schools or college-riding programs, to managing tack shops or managing therapeutic horsemanship centers, to working for national equine pharmaceutical companies, or running their own show and boarder barns. Others are attending graduate school in veterinary medicine, physical therapy, business administration or law.

St. Andrews is committed to the progress and development of our students.

Individual attention is integral to a strong sense of community and caring is everywhere at St. Andrews. From the classroom to the residence hall, from the barn to the playing field, a familiar face is always there if you need assistance.

Located just two miles from the main campus is the breathtaking St. Andrews Equestrian Center. Sitting on a remarkable 300+ acres of land, the Equestrian Center has been host to multiple national events over the last 20 years. It consists of

five barns with a total of 120 matted 12x12 stalls.

13-stall barn housing the therapeutic horsemanship horses.

This barn is connected to one of the covered arenas as well as to the indoor arena. It has a feed room, a hay room, cart storage, tack room, offices, a viewing room, a laundry room and a classroom.

33-stall barn housing the boarder and dressage horses.

This building has a tack room, locker room, a laundry room, offices, kitchen, lounge and storage.

52-stall barn housing the hunter seat horses.

This barn is connected to the covered show arena. This building has two tack rooms, two feed rooms, a laundry room and office space.

The educational opportunities at St. Andrews are wide and far-reaching. Whether your interests lie inside the Equestrian industry or elsewhere, St. Andrews has a variety of majors and minors available to suit your needs.

Choosing an Equestrian-related major at St.Andrews is unique because it does not limit opportunities after graduation. A student majoring in Equine Business Management will take business classes in addition to specialized equine classes graduating with a B.A. in Business with a Specialization in Equine Business Management. This preparation allows for careers both inside and outside of the Equine Industry.

Students studying Biology with a Specialization in Equine Science may apply for our Veterinarian in Residence’s Pre-Veterinary Internship program. This one-of-a-kind program provides students with the opportunity to participate in the routine care of the large equine herd. Students observe and assist in medical diagnostics, procedures and treatment regimes.

Learning by doing

in our Equine Studies minor is a hands-on experience. Students wishing to pursue a career with horses will receive a thorough education including actual time in the stable practicing the skills they’ve learned in the classroom. From organizing horse shows, assistant coaching, course designing, schooling young horses, or teaching lessons, St. Andrews equestrians are involved in many aspects of the industry.

Therapeutic Horsemanship Therapeutic Horsemanship (TH) is a growing field that provides a great opportunity for students who wish to combine their passion for horses with their desire to help people. Therapeutic Horsemanship pairs individuals with disabilities with horses for physical, emotional, social and educational benefits.

St. Andrews pioneered the first four-year degree in Therapeutic Horsemanship and the degree continues to be on the cutting edge of the field through its progressive practical teaching program and interdisciplinary curriculum. The St. Andrews Ride-Like-A-Knight Therapeutic Horsemanship Program emphasizes hands-on teaching experience based on a diverse and comprehensive core curriculum of equine studies, psychology, education and business as well as human anatomy and physiology classes. Students become fully immersed in this rewarding work through the classroom as well as volunteer time in the ring and community.

Students work toward a PATH Intl. riding instructor certification, the national accreditation and certification body for Equine Assisted Activities and Therapies.

Ride-Like-A-Knight:

- serves around 100 riders a week, ages 5 to 65 - participates in the Special Olympics program - enjoys field-trips and guest speakers - travels to regional and national conferences - learns through internships

Competitive Opportunities St. Andrews offers a variety of competitive opportunities applicable to all levels of riding. The opportunity to show is open to any rider who is eager to learn, compete and excel in the show ring. Tryouts are held for new riders at the beginning of the fall semester.

IHSA Hunter Seat

Our Intercollegiate Horse Shows Association (IHSA) Hunter Seat Team competes in Zone 4, Region 3 and has been the Zone Champion team, most recently in 2018. Many of our riders successfully compete in Regional, Zone and National Finals for IHSA. The Hunter Seat Team consists of 50 riders of all levels - from beginner walk/trot riders to open over fences riders. Team practices are held in addition to regularly scheduled lessons.

Show Team The St. Andrews Show Team competes regularly at United States Equestrian Federation (USEF), North Carolina Hunter Jumper Association (NCHJA) and other local association shows in NC and SC. Riders compete in the Adult Hunter and Adult Jumper Divisions. Students with their own horses may also compete in the Amateur Owner Divisions.

ANRC Our American National Riding Commission (ANRC) Team competes nationally. This team is based on the American Forward System of Riding. Students are encouraged to learn and work with their horse both through theory and application. Our ANRC Team has won the National Championship six times and has been Reserve Champion twice. Additionally our riders have been the Individual Champion or Reserve Champion at the ANRC National Championships 12 times. St. Andrews has hosted the National Championships multiple times.

IHSA Western

In 2016 and 2017 our Western IHSA Team was the National Championship Team. We were also the first team with a perfect score of 42 at the Semi-Finals. The team has repeatedly been Champion or Reserve Champion team at Western Semi-finals and has qualified the team and/or individuals for the National finals every year since it was founded in 2005. IHSA offers two types of western competition: Western Horsemanship and Reining.

The Western Team has 25 members who ride in two lessons a week and participate in team practices.

Intercollegiate Dressage Association Our IDA Team competes in NC and VA at IDA sanctioned shows. A team or individuals have qualified for the National Championships 14 times in the 17 years that IDA has been in existence.

St. Andrews hosts two or three IDA shows each year and team members gain valuable experience by participation in the organization and implementation of these shows.

Internships

FUN FACT:

An education at St. Andrews offers students the skills and tools necessary to prosper after graduation. Students wishing to enter the Equine industry are strongly encouraged to apply the skills they have learned through fall, spring or summer internships.

Internships can be explored locally, nationally and even internationally. St. Andrews can help students make connections and establish relationships with successful professionals in the business through many different types of internships such as as trainer assistant, barn manager, camp counselor, veterinary assistant, event planner and therapeutic riding assistant.

St. Andrews students have traveled as far as Germany and Canada to pursue career-oriented internships.

Internships are available to all students and are an integral part of building a professional network often leading to employment after graduation.

Therapeutic Horsemanship Pre-Veterinary Medicine Equestrian Performance FFA 4-H Students must have completed their application and been accepted to be eligable for scholarships.

Lessons

Each rider enrolled in the St. Andrews Equestrian Program receives two group lessons a week. Group lessons are determined by skill level, compatibility, and aspirations with the average group consisting of four members.

Participating in group lessons is a great opportunity for students to meet one another on a common ground, in a setting that is already familiar and comfortable to them.

Lessons are conveniently coordinated around the student’s class schedule after registration.

Although lessons are established on a biweekly basis, the opportunity to ride more than twice a week is available, whether through lessons or independent practice rides. Team practices are also in addition to the lesson and practice ride schedule and are arranged on an individual basis.

Boarding There are student boarder stalls at the Equestrian Center which are available to Team Riders who are competing with their own horses. Full board is the only board option at the St. Andrews Equestrian Center.

A videotape of your horse and a completed horse information questionnaire must be submitted with your Request to Board Application. A Request to Board form is available from the Equestrian Center office.

Only students who have applied, been accepted and paid their enrollment deposit are eligible for boarding applications.

There are other barns in the Laurinburg area where you can board your horse. Some offer pasture board or self-care board. This list is available at the Equestrian Center office.

Riding Council All St. Andrews Equestrian Students are members of the Riding Council. This student-based club allows all equestrians to meet on a common platform and work together to be the heart of the St. Andrews Equestrian Program. The Riding Council meets monthly and offers additional opportunities for hands on learning by sponsoring jump course setting and horse show preparation workdays as well as organizing all St. Andrews horse shows, rider banquets, special events and community service projects.

Conveniently located a stone’s throw from Southern Pines, the heart of a thriving equestrian community, St. Andrews students may also opt to have additional private clinics with local trainers including Harold Chopping, Patty Heuckeroth, Denny Emerson, Mike Rosser and Michael Plumb.

As a part of the equestrian program, riders are held at a higher standard, not just at the barn, but all around the St. Andrews campus.

Faculty expect riders to be in top academic standings, balancing our collegiate sport with rigorous academic demands.
