Intro Hi and welcome to the June edition.

A bumper edition this month, thanks to everyone for getting in touch. There’s a whole heap of events listed in the What’s On, there’s even more Regular Events, the Classified page is rammed and we have articles galore, not to mention new advertisers. The weekend of the 28/29 June seems to be very busy, with cream teas, open gardens, school fayres, concerts, you name it, it appears to be happening that weekend. One of those events is Park Hall open gardens on 29 June. I’ve had coffee (compulsory) with Kim and Margaret, the owners, to hear their story of the house and gardens, captured on the cover (thanks to Nicola Harris). Why not take a look for yourself and treat yourself to a cream tea... fingers crossed the sun shines.

If you would like to advertise, list a classified item, tell us about your local event, contribute in any way or simply want to get in touch please see below. Phone: 01246 568519 Mobile: 07764 80 10 80 Email: paul@s40local.co.uk

Some things to remember... 15 June is Father’s Day, no excuse kids, I’ve got enough socks! And we’re looking to the Grand Départ, the start of the Tour de France, at the beginning of July, starting in Leeds, passing close to Chesterfield and stage 2 finishing in Sheffield near Don Valley. I’ve already got half a dozen or so interesting articles lined up for July, so if you want some space please get in touch! Finally, last month I listed the WI Flower Festival and Organ Recital at The Crooked Spire on the wrong date. It will take place on Thursday 19 June, for more information go to page 34. Sorry...we’re only human at S40 Local and occasionally things go wrong! Paul Chapman.

Business Spotlight

The Manor

A warm welcome for all at The Manor at Brampton I met Craig Lynch, owner of Brampton Manor in March 2010, to talk about future plans for Brampton Manor. Craig bought the business in 2005, after it had been in receivership on two separate occasions - “I fancied a challenge and it seemed like a great opportunity, my background is in hotels and leisure and for me it felt like too good a chance to miss” he said. And Brampton Manor didn’t go unrewarded for its efforts, being voted Chesterfield’s “Most Loved Business in Town” in June 2012. It’s now approaching ten years since Craig purchased the business and he’s implementing a new round of changes... Craig recently sold the sports club side of the business to a local businessman, Stephen Prince, who has renamed the member’s club ‘Princes Sports Club @ The Manor’. Craig has retained the 16th Century Manor House and substantially invested in the Bar and Dining business and the Salon & Spa on the first floor. The building has undergone an extensive refurbishment, working closely with English Heritage, careful to restore some of the building’s character that has been hidden for so long. The Manor looks every bit the contemporary venue, completely refreshed inside and outside, new front patio and sun terrace with a new area for the children to burn off some energy before tucking into their food. ‘The Manor’ is showing increasing confidence as a local business with community and family at its heart. The menu, launched the weekend of 16/17 May, has something for everyone, open for coffees in the morning, light lunches and sandwiches, afternoon tea and cake and dining in the evening, and all with a Mediterranean feel. The Manor has facilities for functions and is registered as a civil venue for weddings. The Spa salon has not missed any focus with treatments and spa packages available; perhaps treat yourself or a loved one... why not take a day off and go with them? Craig explains the changes “We’ve narrowed the focus of the business, following the success of The Fox & Goose. We have a great team in both locations and I’m confident anyone visiting will see a much improved service. The bar is not, and has never been, a members only club, but some local families have never walked up the drive. With the recent The Manor House at changes we really are encouraging people to come and take a Brampton was built by two look, we think you’ll be pleased with the reception you receive brothers, Robert and John in our quiet, secluded, relaxing, location. We’ve got a fantastic Watkinson, between 1585 offer for you here at The Manor.” and 1599.

Brampton Manor was a private family residence until the mid 1960’s when it had a colourful spell as a Gentleman’s Dining and Gaming Club with the benefit of the only late licence in Chesterfield. From 1970 onwards, Brampton Manor became better known as a members squash club.

The Mile Starts Here Enjoy the Brampton Mile at Queen’s Park Brampton Mile businesses; The Manor at Brampton, The Britannia Inn and Spire Marquees are coming to Queen’s Park to host the hospitality area for the Marathon, for what they think will be ‘your best mile of the day’. The event, in support of Kids ‘n’ Cancer and The Chesterfield and Derbyshire Marathon, on September 14th will see The Manor, The Britannia and Spire Marquees providing food and drink in the hospitality area at Queen’s Park from 7am in the morning until the Party finishes in the park later that night. It is said that The Marathon will become one of the biggest events ever to be held in Chesterfield, bringing local businesses and the community together. New Challenge for 2014? The Chesterfield Marathon Lucy Shakespeare from Princes takes us through her training advice.

The 18 week marathon training plan is already in progress and started on 12th May so if you want to start you are behind the plan but if you are already running it may be possible to adapt a program to your needs and get you marathon fit. It’s important for everyone to have the support of fellow runners but also for everyone to be able to run at their own pace. By running together people are encouraged to ‘buddy up’ with someone of a similar ability. We have a weekly training session from Princes at 10am each Sunday morning focusing on the ‘long runs’ on the training plan, you will need to be able to run 10k comfortably to benefit from the session, non members are welcome and the creche is available for a small fee so this may help you with your training plan.

Novice 1 This is a popular training plan used by many new and existing runners planning to run their first marathon. You will need to be up to running 10k comfortably. This program will get you to the starting line, and you can’t get to the finish line unless you get to the start. Long Runs: The key to the program is the long run on weekends, which builds from 6 miles in Week 1 to 20 miles in the climactic Week 15. Every third week is a “stepback” week, where we reduce mileage to allow you to gather strength for the next push upward. Rest is an important component of any training program. Run Slow: I normally recommend that runners do their long runs anywhere from 30 to 90 seconds or more per mile slower than Page 8 www.s40local.co.uk

marathon pace. Simply do your long runs at a comfortable pace, one that allows you to converse with your training partners, at least during the beginning of the run. It’s better to run too slow during these long runs, than too fast. The important point is that you cover the prescribed distance; how fast you cover it doesn’t matter. Walking Breaks: Walking is a perfectly acceptable strategy in trying to finish a marathon and it’s allowed during training runs too. Coaches recommend walking 1 minute out of every 10, or walking 30 seconds then running 30 seconds before walking again, alternatively walk when you come to an aid station. Cross-Training: Sundays are devoted to cross-training, aerobic exercise that allows you to use slightly different muscles while resting after your long run. The best cross-training exercises are swimming, cycling or even walking. You could even combine two or more exercises: walking and easy jogging or swimming and riding an exercise bike in a health club. Strength Training: Although recommended if it’s your first marathon and you aren’t used to a gym it’s probably best left until after your first event. If you must, Tuesdays and Thursdays work well for strength training - after you finish your runs on those days. Midweek Training: Train at a comparatively easy pace. As the weekend mileage builds, the weekday mileage also builds. You should aim to be covering roughly the same mileage during the week as you do during long runs on the weekends. Races: Races can get in the way,

but some racing is convenient, because it introduces you to the racing experience. Consider doing a half marathon in Week 8, a week when in the normal progression you might do 13 miles as your long run. Rest: Rest is important for any training program. During the rest period, 24 to 72 hours between hard bouts of exercise, your muscles regenerate and get stronger. You can’t run hard unless you are well rested. The secret to success in any training program is consistency, so as long as you are consistent with your training during the full 18 weeks of the program, you can afford extra rest. Interactive Training: If you would like more help with your marathon training, get in touch with Lucy at Princes Sports Club @ The Manor, 107 Old Road, call 01246 277760 or visit facebook www.facebook. com/Princessportsclub.

Novice 2 The novice 2 plan is designed for people with some running background, a slight step upwards in difficulty from Novice 1. Runners differ greatly in ability, but ideally before starting a marathon program, you should have been running about a year. If you are able to comfortably run distances between 3 and 6 miles, are training 3 to 5 days a week, averaging 15 to 25 miles then this is for you. It is possible to run a marathon with less of a training base (particularly if you come from another sport), but the higher your fitness level, the easier this 18-week program will be.

This advice is based on a generic training plan - more details can be found at: www.halhigdon.com

Golf Club Words by Paul Chapman. Photographs by Chesterfield Golf Club

Light exercise, a couple of hours outdoors with plenty of fresh air and sunshine and a chance to unwind from day to day cares. A way to build social and business contacts or spend time outdoors with loved ones, spouses, siblings, friends or just enjoying a challenge. If this is what you’re looking for, then maybe golf could be the answer... For S40 Local readers, Chesterfield golf club offers a fantastic environment for playing, socialising and belonging. It’s a true ‘Members’ Golf Club’ run by the members for the members. With a joining fee of £850 and an annual fee of £972, the non profit making club pumps all the funds back into the club and facilities, and to support their younger members, up to the age of 30, there’s a sliding scale of fees based on age. Membership entitles you to unlimited access to play as often as you like, as many or as few holes, with starting points at the 1st, 7th and 10th holes. You can invite friends to play with you at a significant discount, they run a schedule of matches - both competitive and friendly, and control and maintain your CONGU handicap - recognised worldwide. To give you access to other courses they have reciprocal arrangements with Abbeydale and Wortley clubs at member guest rates and you can play discounted golf at 1200 clubs across 27 counties in England. The onsite club professionals, Mike McLean and Shane Naisbett offer coaching and run a ProShop, and there are practice facilities to strengthen your game. Once you’ve finished playing, you might be ready to relax with friends and enjoy some social time. The golf club offers a Clubhouse with ‘a view to die for’, overlooking the 10th tee and the 18th green with Walton Woods and the hills towards Matlock and beyond. A bar with discounted prices for members, excellent catering from Neil and Nicola Hancock, both in the club house and the Halfway House, a facility at the 9th hole for some refreshments mid-game or at the end of your game, if you’re tempted to give in when it’s not going your way! I met Club Secretary/Manager, Trevor Glover and former Ladies Captain, Liz Day to talk about the club and the up and coming Open Day on Sunday 8 June. “We’re holding the Open Day to encourage people who are looking to join a club, either because they’re new to the area or they’re looking to start up golf again after a break. Come and have a look round, meet the team and see the facilities and the fantastic course we’ve got up here”.

“Golf is a good walk spoiled.” Mark Twain.

“If you’re interested in trying golf for the first time, our two club professionals; Mike and Shane are on hand and can arrange an assessment and coaching. A complete beginner would need a few lessons, but within a month or so the coaches should be able to tell if you have the ability to become a player and give you the confidence and skills needed to step out onto the first tee. Once you’ve got the basics it’s simply a case of putting the hours in on the practice ground and the course. Weekday afternoons are often quiet and an ideal time for beginners to put in some time” explains Trevor. “For juniors, aged up to 17 years old, we offer Cadet membership at £10 per annum - kids can attend golf taster or beginner coaching sessions and can practice and develop their new found skills on the practice field facilities - putting, bunkers and a six hole mini par three course. We also have Saturday morning coaching for children and adults - with the first set of coaching FREE. There’s an opportunity for ladies to learn with their children open mornings, coaching for all levels, short course playing and coffee mornings.” Last time we met I asked Trevor about the typical club member and wondered how things had changed. “The average age in the Club is still about 59 with around 500 men, 100 ladies and a strong Junior section. We’re always looking for new members and new youngsters would be great. We run a range of coaching and playing options for beginners and improvers of all ages.” I mentioned this last time we spoke to Trevor but I can’t help thinking that if your kids are under par on the Wii and fancy their hand at the real thing - the club would be a great place to take them and see if their talent is real. Across the UK the Golf Club environment is changing, with a steady move away from traditional one off membership fees and exclusive use of a members only club. The way people play is changing, the way people expect to be treated is changing and there is a move from the traditional formality of the golf course. Some are becoming more flexible, Chesterfield Golf Club, whilst retaining its traditional standards, has gone a long way to embrace these changes adopting a far more friendly and welcoming attitude to visitors and new members alike to ensure its future. Trevor explained “Dress down days are now a regular feature, with people coming into the club house in the evening in casual dress to enjoy the facilities. As recently as last year there was a strictly no jeans policy in the club house. The dress down days have been well received” explains Trevor. “We now have a full program of dining and entertainment taking place - the club house takings are seeing a massive increase to a level that will sustain the staff and the facilities.” “Not everyone likes the changes, preferring the established traditional values, but we recognise the need to move with the times, if the club is to prosper and survive as a top quality local club we need to adapt and we’re working with the members to make sure it works for everyone.” Don’t forget, the Open Day on Saturday 8 June, where you can check out Chesterfield Golf Club and see if it’s for you. A Teacher’s Story A typical day in the life at Kip McGrath

of written English and how to analyse a text. She began to write her own original pieces. She continued to make errors but bit by bit, areas of her work began to improve.

I am a local Derbyshire English teacher and work in a State school with students doing their English GCSEs. I love my work and am extremely proud of my students and their progress during the two years they’re with me.

With Julie’s support and encouragement, Sophie and her parents approached us at school and asked that Sophie sit the Higher GCSE papers and, based on the progress she was beginning to make, I recommended she should and the school agreed.

However I have to tell you about Sophie, one of my students. Despite my best efforts, Sophie was lacking in confidence, frustrated and confused all at the same time with her efforts in both Language and Literature. We had her down to sit the Foundation papers as she was routinely getting D’s and E’s. This meant that a grade C would be the best she could hope to achieve, but I always felt that Sophie was far better than she believed.

By Easter she was improving in leaps and bounds. Her confidence grew dramatically; she tackled new challenges with enthusiasm and began to talk about staying on at school to do her A Levels. I contacted the Kip tutor, Julie, and congratulated her on the amazing turnaround in Sophie’s English Language and Literature. It is lovely to see Sophie, head held high and full of optimism as she prepares to sit her GCSE exams in June. I no longer have my doubts!

Luckily Sophie’s mum had heard of Jo at Kip McGrath and took Sophie along for an assessment. After a comprehensive analysis, Jo passed Sophie to Julie (one of the Kip teachers) and they began work. The relationship between Julie and Sophie blossomed as a result Sophie began to take ‘risks’ and have a go at things she had been avoiding (and in my classroom as well!). She learnt how to identify and describe features

Alan Crowe, Managing Director, is keen to point out that the local domestic market is his pride and joy. “I have thoroughly enjoyed serving the local people of Chesterfield, Matlock, Bakewell, Dronfield, South Yorkshire and Nottinghamshire,” he says. “Our reputation has grown as a result of the glowing testimonials from all our domestic customers and we are proud of the service we provide them. “We have a reputation for being technically inventive and are renowned for our quality of both goods and service. Most of our work is repeat business, or from recommendation. Any product purchased from Polar is guaranteed to be of the highest quality. “We offer a complete service from initial consultation, through to the latest computer aided design. The product is then manufactured by skilled craftsmen on our own premises, before an experienced team installs the product to exacting standards, guaranteed to delight and enhance any home. There’s no substitute for experience. Every installation is monitored, with the customer only signing off the job when they’re satisfied.” Friendly sales staff, based in the Hasland showroom, are always available to discuss any details and show product examples. Experienced craftsmen and installation engineers are also on hand to offer invaluable advice. Products are manufactured in a sizeable workshop from the same premises. Polar use only environmentally-friendly leadfree products on all frames, which also have the added advantage of no discolouration. All frames are BSI ‘Q’ marked, and all glass conforms to exacting British standards and has a 10-year guarantee. Triple glazed windows, which improve thermal and acoustic performance, are becoming increasingly popular, as are the numerous types of reflective glass, and PVC in a variety of colours. Polar Windows are members of CERTAS - a body designed to protect the customer, with strict guidelines and guarantees. In addition, every Polar windows installation comes with a ten year QANW (Quality Assured National Warranty). Polar are one of a select group of companies registered to sell finance off the premises, offering customers the opportunity to take advantage of special rates, including interest free. “Over the years, we have proved ourselves time and time again. Anyone using Polar can rest assured that they’re getting quality service and quality goods at the best possible price with an aftercare service which is second to none.” “There’s no reason to go anywhere else,” says Alan.

Flower Festival and Organ Recital at the Crooked Spire, Chesterfield. Words and pictures by Debbie Waters Next year is the centenary of the Women’s Institute and as a lead-up to this milestone, there is a Baton Relay around the whole of the country - rather like the Olympic torch but smaller! The Baton will be arriving in Chesterfield on Thursday 19 June 2014 and all WIs have been encouraged to ‘do something’’ to mark the event. Rutland Group of WIs, which covers the Chesterfield area, has decided to hold a flower festival and organ recital in The Crooked Spire. The Mayor will be in attendance, along with members of Derbyshire federation of WIs, including the Chairman, Mrs. Chrissie Booth. The Mayor and Chrissie will be going up the tower of the Crooked Spire to perform the official handover of the Baton, following its visit to Bolsover Castle the previous evening. The Organ Recital will be performed by the organist from either The Crooked Spire or The Annunciation Church in Chesterfield. The floral arrangements will be done by WI ladies and then left in the Church Page 34 www.s40local.co.uk

so the congregation and visitors to The Crooked Spire can enjoy them over the following week or so. Some of the displays are being sponsored by local companies and our thanks go to Banner Jones Solicitors, Dunston Lodge Kennels, I Heart Hair, Johnsons the Ironmongers, Meringue Bakery, R Jo’s, Signature Nails and Beauty and Trusting Hands. We are very grateful to these organisations for their support. This promises to be an exciting event, particularly as it coincides with the 70th birthday of the Rutland Group of WIs, so it is a very auspicious time for us. All are welcome to join us and celebrate these two big anniversaries within the WI movement and visitors to the Church will be very welcome from 11.00am.

Food for thought Chesterfield Foodbank Words by Nicola Chapman. Images by Trusell Trust

It’s widely publicised that a growing number of people are finding it difficult to make ends meet with the rising cost of living, freezing of wages, benefit changes and the incidence of zero hour contracts taking their toll. Food banks are increasingly filling a need for short term support for many vulnerable people. The Chesterfield Food Bank was established in June last year, affiliated to the Trussel Trust, it provides an emergency supply of food to people and families, for three days, with a maximum of three visits in total. Ben Martin, Chesterfield Foodbank Project Manager explained “we encourage independence, rather than dependency”. This is achieved via their links with other agencies, “we really are short term emergency support for people and work closely with Children’s Centres and Pathways, who support homeless and rootless people. It’s also through these agencies that people receive a referral and a foodbank voucher to claim their food - without the voucher we are not able to provide food.” Ben explained what happens “The Foodbank operates on a Tuesday from 1pm to 3pm, from the town centre at The Gates, 19 South Street, above Soulville Steakhouse and at Loundsley Green Community Centre on a Friday 1pm to

3pm. Both Centres are staffed by volunteers and offer a friendly and relaxed environment. People are greeted by a volunteer with a cup of tea or coffee before sitting down with their volunteer who checks that their voucher is correctly completed, checks whether they have any specific dietary requirements and some preferences - for example, whether they’d prefer tea or coffee in their food package. A volunteer packs up the food while they sit and have the freedom to talk to someone who will listen then after 20 minutes or so the food is brought out and off they go with our blessing.” To provide this service and help people who have fallen into hard terms, very often through no fault of their own, a vast amount of food and generosity from people across the community is required - incidentally, almost all the food is donated by the public. “We do two big food collections each year at Tesco stores, where Tesco adds 30% in funds against whatever value has been donated. But we also have a collection box at the back of St Thomas’ Church or food can be dropped off at the reception in the centre behind the church. For small donations, there’s the Gates in town above Soulville Steakhouse and Loundsley Green Community Centre”. “The generosity of people always astounds me. At one of the Tesco collections, an older couple walked past us on their way in, without taking much notice of us, as we gave them the list of preferred items and I assumed they weren’t very interested. On their way out, they handed over four carrier bags full of items from the list. They mentioned quietly that they had needed a food bank to help them out of a difficult situation the previous year, and were glad to help now they were back on their feet.” The food parcels consist of the same nonperishable foods, from a list developed by the Trussell Trust, designed to provide nutritious

Article food for the three days. The list on the web site shows the foods required for each parcel. Depending what people have provided there’s usually some items the Foodbank is short of. “At the moment we are desperate for long-life fruit juice, sugar, tinned sponge puddings, long-life milk, tinned meat - hot dogs, meatballs, Fray Bentos pies, ham, chicken in sauce etc...”

What became clear to me was how easy it is to find yourself needing extra support - illness, redundancy, problems with finances, paperwork delays or a change in circumstances can quickly make people vulnerable and in need of some support - the Foodbank programme, coupled with the other agencies provide that support to get people through a difficult time.

There is a mobile app where you can check out the foods that each food bank is in need of - it’s called the Foodbank App, and is available from Google player and the iTunes Store. You can then select Chesterfield - those foods marked red, are those we’re desperate for, amber, those we’re running low on and green, we’ve got plenty at the moment.

If you would like to donate to the Chesterfield Foodbank - the list of foods opposite gives you an indication of the kind of foods that would be greatly appreciated, and the those highlighted are the ones that they are really short of at the moment.

“Unlike soup kitchens, we’re not able to take any food that’s out of date or any dented tins. As a soup kitchen is preparing the food, they are able to check the quality of the food before they serve it, where we can’t do that, so we can’t take that risk with people’s health”. “Our services wouldn’t run without the 60 or 70 amazing volunteers from across Chesterfield, they are people who love Chesterfield and want to help the people who live here. I can’t thank them enough.”

ParkHall Open Gardens 2014

Words by Paul Chapman. Photography by Nicola Harris.

We talk to Kim and Margaret Staniforth from Park Hall on Walton Back Lane prior to them holding the last of their Open Garden Days on 29 June.

After ten years of opening up their garden to the public and raising money for charities, as part of the National Gardens Scheme, Kim and Margaret Staniforth will open Park Hall on Walton Back Lane for the last time on Sunday 29 June. If you’ve been up on previous events you’ll be familiar with, what is a fantastic, almost secret Page 40 www.s40local.co.uk

garden - the walled exterior hiding from view the pleasures within. Each year Park Hall sees approximately 700 people through the gates and for the past five years I’ve intended to talk to the pair, so in this, their final year, I’ve eventually made a special effort to see them. “It’s been a pleasure to invite people in and

share the pleasure of the garden over the weekends” says Margaret, “we also host visits by arrangement from the NGS scheme and can have ten ladies from a local Women’s Institute one week, and a coach of 30 people from Carlisle another”. Originally from Sheffield, Kim, was an accountant and South Yorkshire High Sheriff in

2001 and Margaret a doctor who loves greens, the design of the garden is in layers of green. Both are now retired and today Margaret is the brains behind the planting and Kim stays on top of the maintenance - the maintenance is a full time job with Kim putting in three days a week and their gardener, Ian another day In addition, there is a main contractor who tends with heavy maintenance for one day a week. Please mention S40 Local · Page 41

Article Kim and Margaret fell in love with the house and in 1997 they made it their home. When they moved in the garden was derelict, “a complete wreck” adds Kim. “We’d previously enjoyed creating a garden at our home in Sheffield and wanted to continue the garden development and design here at Park Hall. Here the garden is in two main parts” explains Kim, “the front garden, which was terraced in the 1920s, faces the sun all day and the second area is the old tennis court, this part was in very poor condition when we arrived.” The house, which dates back to 1664 was originally a farm house. In the 1930s it was owned by Phillip Robinson from Robinsons and Sons Ltd, and one of the Robinson family visited the house to show Kim and Margaret some photographs of works they’d had done in the gardens during the late 1930s “These gave us some idea of the original garden layout and provided an interesting historical insight into its layout and structure” says Kim. Our first tasks were to get the garden back under control and the basic structures rebuilt and tidied up where needed. All the stonework needed repairing and the beds were full of large overgrown 30’ high hollies and laurels on one side and 15’ high rhododendrons on the other. Kim and Margaret had work done by Pople Landscaping and used Dunston Garden Centre to supply materials and plants. The hard landscaping has been done by Garden Style, who now have a nursery to the north west of Sheffield. “As part of this early work we restored the main garden, put in the lighting and planted the boundary with 400 shrubs, hollies, tsuga, fir trees, yew etc. Along the North boundary is a beech and holly hedge” says Kim. “I’d seen a similar patchwork hedge at Hidcote Manor, I thought it was delightful and wanted to recreate here” adds Margaret. In 1998/9 work started planting up the main garden, part of the old tennis court, “in our first week at the hall two poplars blew over, saving us some work removing them!” explains Kim. “It was during this time that we started work to create a millennium project in this area - a sunken garden, the principle feature being a pleached circle of hornbeams - we planted these in 2001, but it was 2007 before it looked right. Today this is a thick circle of hedge suspended on slender trunks, surrounding a small pool - it’s a fantastic success “We’d seen rows and straight designs using pleaching but never a circle, we’re delighted by the results” says Margaret. The designs for the sunken garden were the work of Helen Atkinson from Wingerworth.

Page 42 www.s40local.co.uk

There is a third area to the garden which is more natural, more wild... it’s an area of parkland with a seat cut into what remains of a large horse chestnut trunk - previously diseased and removed. It’s a quiet area, a place to sit, ruminate and take in your surroundings. Quite a few trees have been removed in the garden, some diseased and some blown over. This has opened up the area creating a much lighter space. It was in 1998 that a friend of Margaret asked about holding a lunch in the garden for the charity Birthright, which was followed by fundraising events for the Red Cross, The Friends of Chernobyl’s Children and other charities. In 2004 Kim and Margaret were persuaded to join the National Gardens Scheme (NGS). NGS operate a yellow book, the so called ‘bible’ of garden visiting and the essential guide to the thousands of gardens that open for the NGS, and between them raise £2.5m pa in charity funds. This they’ve done, inviting us, each year, to share this special and beautiful place, whilst raising funds, a quarter of the Park Hall raised funds being donated to the Bluebell Wood Children’s Hospice in North Anston. The development of the garden you can see today, is the culmination of a ten year project, with further years for maturing and development, it’s the result of hard work, creativity and skill. And on 29 June, it may be your last chance to peak behind the wall into this hidden, private gem. On the day they’ll be cream teas and possibly a bit of bunting... and with your support this could be the most successful year yet in their fundraising activities.

Serving Chesterfield Alexis Diouf takes over the Mayoral Chains Words by Paul Chapman. Photography by CBC. Each May Chesterfield’s outgoing Mayor hands over the responsibility for representing our town to the next in line, so as Cllr Paul Stone steps down and it’s an S40 man, Alexis Diouf that takes his place. Alexis has served Chesterfield as a councillor for 11 years and is constantly amazed by the positive things happening in our town. We caught up with Alexis to find out a bit more about the man behind the glad rags and gold chain. In 2000 Chesterfield took a poll to decide whether the role of mayor should continue to be bestowed in the traditional way, based on length of council service, or whether the role should be voted in by the public. Chesterfield decided to stick with the traditional approach, after all it’s a non-political role, the Mayor’s job is advocate and ambassador for Chesterfield, promoting the borough and raising the profile of community groups. “I’d previously turned down the role twice as I felt I wasn’t ready and didn’t have the time needed to fully commit “ says Alexis. “but I’m now ready for it, I’ve taken early retirement and my wife has flexibility in her work, so we’ve prepared the family for a year where they may need to make an appointment to see Mum and Dad, and we’re ready for the engagements and to raise the funds for the mayoral charities.” “I never thought I’d achieve such a position, I feel humbled and privileged to be able to serve the town and support the community. What I’m keen to make clear is that I’m here for the people of Chesterfield. I urge people to call on me as Mayor, as much as

you can – and that’s throughout the borough. I already have events booked locally, in Staveley, Whittington Moor and Poolsbrook. I’m accessible via the Town Hall, so if you’d like the Mayor to attend your event, please get in touch.” “I’m originally from Senegal, my background is so different from the people I work and live with today… at home whole families of every generation live together, I was the first of five children who went to school, we’re very close and my family has always been my priority” explains Alexis. Education in Senegal is not free and Alexis had to work whilst at school to help fund his education and it wasn’t until he started teaching that he managed to repay the fees for his own primary school education and fund the schooling for the rest of his family. “After leaving school I became a teacher and at 22 I was Vice Principal of a secondary school in Dakar, Senegal’s capital, teaching English. Age and seniority are important in Senegal so I had to prove my worth. But at only 24 I realised teaching was not for me and resigned. Teaching provided me with full board and accommodation so some considered I’d made a bad decision. I went on holiday in Canada to think about my next move. On my return to Senegal, I worked briefly as a tour guide. Two months later I took on a role of publications assistant.” “Whilst in Canada I met Vickey -Anne who was holidaying there. We spent 10 days together” recalls Alexis, “Vickey-Anne fell for me and chased me across Canada by letter

and then back to Dakar. It was in November 1980 that I arrived in the UK and we married in January 1981, two months later”. “When I arrived in the UK I had to re-train as my qualifications from Senegal, although French in origin, were not recognised. What struck me as I re-trained was the vast array of resources people have access to in the UK. How can anyone fail to gain qualifications in this environment I used to think. It was so very different to back home where people tore pages from text books, to take them home and soak up the knowledge they contained, books and knowledge are so precious in Senegal.” Alexis’ first paid job in the UK was a part time role in the community helping volunteers find jobs – with a salary of just £37 per week. From here he became a Service Manager in Chesterfield Social Services and with his family grown up, in 1984 joined the Liberal Party and studied an A level course in British government. “In 2003 I decided to stand and represent Walton, my home ward. I was advisor to the leader,Ray Russell and have worked as Chair of Scrutiny Panel ,Executive for Best Value and Performance, Executive for Corporate Services and management of the budget. In 2011 I was promoted to Executive for Business Transformation.” “My roles have always involved me working in the community, that’s where I want to put my efforts and that’s what I want to support. I have a passion to improve the lot for people locally.” “As Mayor we have a charity role to raise funds for our chosen charities

“My official launch as Mayor is on 27 June with a dinner party at Maison Mes Amis where the fund raising begins... tickets will be on sale with the Civic Secretary on 01246 345239 at £34.50 per head. It would be great to have as many people as possible from the local community along to share the launch with me.” Page 48 www.s40local.co.uk

and in a good year we might raise £30,000. For my year in the seat I have chosen to split the funds between three charities: 50% to the British Heart Foundation, following the support I received after my heart bypass,9 years ago, 25% to Roofstop who fund a winter night shelter, run by Chesterfield Church’s Action of which I was chair until recently and the final 25% to Friends of Baback, a small charity to support my former primary school and dispensary in my home village. In Senegal kids go to school but many parents don’t have the funds to complete schooling – so people sponsor a child through school – this goes directly to charity, with no overheads, it’s so positive.” “The theme for my year as Mayor is ‘Home and Away’ - I want to give my service to two countries, my home today and my place of birth, I like to feel I’m addressing the needs of both.” As we talked further it was clear that Alexis was thrilled that one of the Canadian children he taught in Senegal was attending the Civic Service on 17 May . “He’s now a lieutenant colonel, and he won’t be the only one who’s travelled, as the Senegalese Ambassador is coming too, this is a big thing back home” beams Alexis with pride. Chesterfield Carnival 2014 We catch up with Maria Davison who’s rather busy at the moment... Words by Paul Chapman.

Saturday 26 July is Chesterfield Carnival day, a free event for the community at Stand Road. It’s the brain-child of Maria Davison with a group of friends who wanted to raise funds for Ashgate Hospice following the sudden death of a colleague’s wife. “She went from illness to passing away in a couple of months. Friends asked if we could do anything in her memory. We talked about a bench, but wanted to do something different. We felt Chesterfield has a thriving community, but no annual community based event to celebrate it, so decided to create one and through the event raise funds for Ashgate Hospice”. Maria, a nurse at Bolsover, has a passion for organising, she’s arranged a number of fundraising events, including support for Help for Heroes and the Big Sleeps - and she’s got a history of getting things done. “The

Chesterfield Carnival is a full time job” she says “and I’m doing it in addition to my full time job, as a nurse.” As an umbrella charity for the carnival, Maria has set up, Ashgate Angels, “in the past there were Robbo’s Angels, Robinsons girls who raised money for charities, so I got the ideas from them and adapted it to reflect the focus on Ashgate Hospice” it’s a fitting tribute to her work. “The theme of the carnival is ‘inclusion of all and exclusion of none’. It’s about breaking down barriers, building the sense of pride in our town and community. We want people to leave having benefited in some way” explains Maria, “maybe find a club or society to join, visit the health and wellbeing village, have a blood pressure check and seek advice on a necessary lifestyle change as a result. Perhaps find a local business they’ve never seen and decide to support them, spending their money locally in preference to a multinational... who knows how they might benefit, but this is our aim.” “Our early expectation on attendance was 200 to 300 people, recent discussions with the council have told us to work on expecting an estimated 8000 people!” Coincidentally, it’s 25 years since the last Chesterfield Festival! Trevor Oldfield, who set up the first event in 1963, is onboard with today’s event and is delighted to see that it’s risen from the ashes. Carnivals in days gone by featured Trevor’s band, the Chesterfield Toppers Showband featured in the festival parade. Renamed The Chesterfield Musketeers in 1981, they will be taking part in this year’s festival parade. Trevor remembers the festivals of old suffering the odd calamity “I remember setting up in June one year as it snowed! The much publicised aerial display taking place above the clouds, completely hidden from its audience amongst many other minor hitches”. There’re a lot of crossed fingers that this year’s inaugural event suffers no such problems. On the day there will be loads to do; a parade along Sheffield Road, a Live Music stage by

BIKE WEEK 14 to 22 June 2014

The Tour de France Grand Départ 2014 sees the world famous road race starting from Leeds. On the second day a 200km stage route starts in York and finishes just 16 miles away on the roads near Don Valley Stadium in Sheffield. This is sure to be a bumper year for all things cycling, with the success of Team GB at the 2012 Olympics, to the Tour De France winners of Sir Bradley Wiggins (2012) and Chris Froome (2013). This is all great news, many people are taking to two wheels and now is a good time to give cycling a try. Your bike doesn’t have to be a lightweight precision tool for winning races, it’s just a great way to keep fit, stay healthy and save a few £’s whilst getting from a to b. So before the Grand Départ there’s Bike Week, an annual opportunity to promote cycling and encourage ‘everyday cycling for everyone’. Demonstrating the social, health and environmental benefits of cycling, the week aims to get people to give cycling a go all over the UK, whether for fun, as a means of getting around to the local shops, school, the library or just to visit friends. In support of Bike week there are a number of events locally being run by local groups, clubs and societies and there may well be more going on during the week. Events can be found at: www.bikeweek.org.uk/events.

Get with it... Get Vintage! Live Laugh & Love With Julie Drury

Get Busy... Get to Maison Mes Amis

Julie Drury, Hairstylist and photographer has been featured in Vintage Life Magazine and is, rightly, delighted by this.

Monday 2 June: The Book Club. The title this month is ‘Behind the Scenes at the Museum’ by Kate Atkinson.

“The two photographs shown here were included in a feature in their May 2014 edition called ‘We’re Loving Your Hair’ from Vintage Life Magazine.

It’s always busy at Maison Mes Amis and the next month is no exception. Marcella and the team have been in touch to keep us all posted of their events.

Sunday 8 June: Sarah Bennett Jazz Duo. An afternoon of Jazz with the Sarah Bennett Jazz Duo taking place between 2 and 6 pm, entry is free and you can enjoy two cocktails for £10 or a glass of bubbly for a fiver. Friday 27 June: Mayor’s Fundraising Dinner. Join Alexis (see page 46) for a night of fine dining. Sunday 22 June: The Duck Race. Join in the fun in the park alongside the river Hipper between Somersall Park and Walton Dam. There will be a BBQ, a sweet stall, raffle and a bar run by Maison Mes Amis. Put your £1.50 on one of the many small little ducks. They’ll enter one of the three qualifying races that will take place at midday, 1pm, 2pm and then the final at 3pm. The event starts at 10:30am and children must be accompanied by an adult. The event is a fundraiser for the Sick Children’s Trust, a Sheffield based charity who provides free, high quality, home from home accommodation for families with sick children. These homes enable families to stay close to their sick child’s bedside, at important times when it’s needed.

“Following this I’ve been lucky enough to have my hair and photography shortlisted for Miss June. If you’d like to see more photographs taken by myself or models that I have styled, please pop over to my Facebook site - www. facebook.com/JulieDruryPhotography.”

11 Friday July: Opera Night. Complete with red carpet so adorn yourself in your finest cocktail wear and join us for, what promises to be, a great night. Tickets now available at for the night at £45 per person.

Julie is currently in the swing of Prom season, she will transform your hair with glamorous styling and can also capture the moment with a photo shoot in the studio, before you head off for your special night. If you would like to find out more about Julie’s services, just give her a call or call into her studio upstairs at 65 Chatsworth Road.

If you’ve not tried Maison Mes Amis, the summer is a great time to sit and relax in the quiet courtyard garden at the rear. Away from the hustle and bustle of Chatsworth Road the space was opened last year and is now nicely established so why not give it a try?

Ashgate Called... at The Crispin “The Crispin Pub on Ashgate Road played host to a wonderful gig by the band Ashgate Calling on Friday 11 April. A fusion of folk and different styles, including tones from Celtic to Middle Eastern. We were treated to music by enthusiastic and able performers. From mandolin to whistle to drum…. and that was just one member of the band… the range and complexity of the music was a joy to behold, well-melded and worked together. The group, who also play in the Brampton Community Band, obviously enjoyed the evening, as did their audience. Clarinet, whistle, recorder, accordion, bass and rhythm guitars, voices, saxophone, flute and various percussions ducked and dived through a range of complex tunes and styles, providing a fine evening’s entertainment, including the essential audienceparticipation shanty. All the music was fresh and interesting. Look out for their next performance, advertised locally in S40.” Rosie Welch

Planning permission isn’t required for a simple change of use from a pub to a shop but Tesco felt it needed larger premises and has twice had its applications turned down by the Chesterfield Borough Council planning committee on several different grounds. Tesco gave notice that it wished to appeal and has asked that the appeal be upgraded to a public inquiry. The national Planning Inspectorate has agreed its request and the inquiry will take place in Chesterfield between Tuesday 15th and Thursday 17th July 2014. Tesco has shown it means business and is employing top barristers to defeat a hardworking but penniless campaign group who are working solely to maintain a community asset. The group advises that there will be a public meeting at The Crispin on Tuesday 10th June at 8pm to bring everyone up to date and to ask for support during the inquiry. The group is also seeking new evidence that may prove influential and would like to hear from anyone who could add to the group’s argument. Contact: hmborrell@talktalk.net

Scout Leader The 2nd Brampton Scout troop, who meet weekly in Brookside, has enthusiasm, talent and a real desire to serve the community. But without an adult leader its future is in the balance. Highlights of the past year have included: a ‘Backwoods Cooking Night’ at Spitewinter, a successful bonfire and BBQ, activities to attain their electronics badge, singing carols to the elderly at Ridgewood House, and drama at the Gospel Mission Church in preparation for their Promise Challenge. Despite the lack of a permanent leader, 2nd Brampton played a full part in District Competitions such as: ‘Operation Round and About’ the District and County Cooking Competition and the Orienteering Competition. Their efforts won them second place in the Premier Troop Competition. There are ambitious plans for the future too, Group Scout Leader Val Richards explained: ‘Fundraising is underway to refurbish the Scout Hut and provide up to date facilities. Our young people deserve a committed leader and I would like to appeal to readers to get in touch with me if they feel they could take this on. Training and support will be provided. Garden Tips

Words by Colin Harrison This is the busy season in the garden, but, as always, the thing to remember is that gardening should be relaxing and fun. 1. Weeds are successful because they grow and set seed quickly, so remove them before they flower. If you have to use pesticides, a systemic one painted onto the growing tips in dry weather is the most efficient way of applying it; wind dispersal of spray can damage any plant it comes into contact with. 2. If you have fruit trees, you can improve the size of individual fruit by thinning out the buds. Quite a lot will fall anyway, but for eating apples aim for one bud per cluster, with about 15cm (6”) between clusters, and for cookers about 20cm (8”). Pears can be two buds per cluster, again about 15cm apart, and plums should be 8cm (about 3”) apart. 3. Summer bedding plants should be planted out now; soak them very thoroughly beforehand and, if the soil is dry, pour water into the planting hole and let it drain away before putting the plants in, although you should still water them in well – this helps the soil settle. 4. Greenhouses heat up very fast in sunshine, so they may need shading of some sort, as well as maximum ventilation. 5. Spring-flowering shrubs and soft fruits (mainly gooseberries and currants) should be pruned now. 6. All danger of frost should have passed, so any tender plants that have been germinated indoors or under cover can be planted out. Lots of vegetable seeds can be sown directly into the ground, to produce a succession of crops. 7. Stake plants that have a tendency to flop over, especially those with big flower heads. Ideally, the stakes should be about 20cm (8”) shorter than the eventual height of the plant, so they’re completely hidden when the plants start to flower. 8. Keep an eye on anything growing in containers to make sure they don’t dry out (this is especially important with grow bags). Don’t assume that rain provides irrigation, as very little of it will reach the soil of containers, and remember that both sunshine and wind cause plants to transpire lots of water. It’s much harder to re-wet containers once they’ve dried out, as the water runs straight through; if this happens, soak the container thoroughly at regular intervals (allow an hour or so between soakings) until you’re happy the soil is retaining the water and it’s not just running out again. 9. Plants in containers will need feeding, but make sure the soil is damp first, otherwise the feed will run straight through (see above). 10.Houseplants should be moved away from anywhere where they will get direct sun, and will need regular watering and feeding (again not into dry soil).
