• Encourage your child to choose the book themselves. Talk about the cover picture and speculate what the story may be about. This helps to get them interested and curious. • Make reading time special. Keep it quiet and calm and ensure your child has 1-2-1 time with you for reading. Snuggling up with a good book is not just for grown-ups! • Point to each word as you read together. • Cover up parts of words to breakdown into basic sounds to encourage your child to ‘have a go’ at sounding out new words. Don’t be afraid to help out by filling the gaps created by unknown words. It’s important to keep the flow going so the meaning of the story isn’t lost and your child doesn’t become frustrated and demotivated.
