Intro Hi everyone and welcome to our March edition, yes March, I know! Tempus Fugit and all that. Between each edition I send out an email to all my past advertisers, just to remind folk that I'm still here and see if people want an advert. Last time I wrote it I couldn't think of a word to say, I was lost for words! So I come to write the March intro and there is so much to share! Firstly I've called in and spoken to a few of our fabulous local businesses and you know what... I feel inspired. We also catch up with the team working to restore Cannon Mill and create a new centre for our youth to learn and grow. “I’ve always been a Chesterfield lad,” says Matt. “I’m originally from Sheffield but I’ve been in Chesterfield for the last 13 years, we moved to Hasland in 2020, during Covid. "I love the sense of community around here. We’ve been welcomed by the businesses around us with open arms. We’ve been thinking about finding a base for a while now and when we spotted this it was a great opportunity, plus it’s just a two-minute walk to work!" Matt looked at a space in Rother Valley, but the Hasland location is spot on, a lot of footfall past the

door, a high street location and somewhere that’s highly visible on the school run! "I’ve started networking, mainly in the pub, and made some contacts already," laughs Matt. The new shop opened on Valentine’s Day and as well as selling his art, Matt wants to encourage those around him to get creative and take up art. He’ll be selling art supplies, pens, pencils, papers etc for people of all ages. “When I was younger, I was always seeking out new pencils and pens, so as well as the artwork it makes sense to have a small stock of art essentials,” says Matt. Matt is influenced by Banksy and Van Gogh, ‘Starry Night’ being one of his favourite pieces of art. We chatted about the immersive experience and he’s making plans to see the Van Gogh installation which is presently in Leicester. At this point, conversation took a bit of a turn, away from art, we discussed Chesterfield. Like me, Matt longs for experiences and places to visit in town, to not have to travel to Sheffield and the surrounding cities all the time. It’s clear Matt has a real passion for town and wants to see it as a destination, a place to visit, stay and linger, I added that having two teenagers I always feel like Chesterfield has

Cover Artist forgotten it has any young people! We desperately need places with interesting activities to keep them entertained and allow them to grow. Matt’s artwork is heavy on architecture, "I don’t do people or animals," he laughs. "I’m inspired by the older Victorian buildings, I think that’s why I love the shop and studio, an interesting space, not all straight lines and boxy design." Influenced by Looney Tunes cartoons I can clearly see that in Matt’s work, bright colours, bold lines. On a recent trip to Amsterdam, one of Matt’s highlights was a Roy Lichtenstein exhibition, plus the chance to see work by Andy Warhol, again clearly people who are the inspiration for Matt’s style. The subjects of Matt’s work are mostly very local, key places in the Peak District, Curbar Edge, Surprise View, Stanedge, plus Chesterfield spots, the Spire, the marketplace and many images of Sheffield, clubs Matt remembers affectionately and land marks across the city… look out for the Chesterfield nightclubs! “I love to draw places I have a connection with, places that featured in my teenage years, places I grew up with,” explains Matt. "Ten years ago, I was still finding my style. I wouldn’t have been able to open the shop as you see it, I’m more comfortable with what I do now, I’ve found my place, established a loyal following and built a portfolio of work."

Taking refuge in a hotel near Brands Hatch, being put up in a full hotel after the night manager heard them mentioning that they’d just driven back from Munich in a day. This event helped raise £250k for Roundabout. In April, Matt’s wife Lynsey, runs the London Marathon. Lynsey suffers from muscular dystrophy and will be raising funds for related charities. "I’d just like to mention that I’ve been blown away by the support I’ve had in training from our new neighbours LPH fitness, they have been so supportive and really inspired me to train," adds Lynsey. The studio and shop seem to be the perfect place for this creative couple, Lynsey works in design too, they can sit working in the studio and be around to meet and greet customers in the shop. As well as running the business Matt likes to get involved in events, he’s supported the Roundabout charity, a charity working with homeless young people in South Yorkshire, by taking part in ‘Bangers & Cash’. This saw them drive to Munich starting in Hull to, Holland, Belgium, Germany,

A Quiet Rebellion
Words: Molly Scott Images: Helen Rowan Photography Over the last year, two S40-based female founders have quietly set about revolutionising what business networking looks like here in Chesterfield. Award-winning photographer, Helen Rowan and therapist and wellbeing practitioner, Michelle Leeder’s ‘The Loop Collective’ is probably the fastest growing networking group for Derbyshire women. The group is specifically aimed at women running their own businesses and creative projects. Each of the women have found success in business through empowering women and supporting them in developing greater confidence in themselves. Helen has run a successful family portraiture photography business for seven years, but in the last couple of years has been astonished with how quickly the branding side of her business has taken off. It was this subtle shift in her business that solidified her friendship with co-founder, Michelle. Originally from London, Michelle moved from Essex to Derbyshire to be nearer to family and retrained as a counsellor having worked extensively in the charity and non-profit sector. A NCPS accredited psychotherapist, Michelle’s female-centred practice works face-to-face with clients in Chesterfield and online across the UK, offering a range of sessions from one-to-one and group courses.
In 2023, Michelle joined forces with podcaster and coach, Mel Wiggins to launch an ‘Embodied Leadership’ course for women. This revolutionary new model seeks to empower female leaders to tap into their intuition, embrace emotions and foster a sense of trust and resilience within themselves and their teams to lead with power, grace and compassion. Alongside her work with women, one of Michelle’s interests within her therapy practice is Ecotherapy which is based on the belief that there's much that can be learned from tuning into nature which has led to her becoming involved in an exciting rewilding project in Cutthorpe. At its first location, Cow Close Farm, Wild & Other is creating three beautiful, sustainable holiday lets set in 20-acres of land. On that land areas are being managed to encourage certain species of rare birds, small mammals, insects, amphibians, trees and flowers. Already returning are barn owls and sparrowhawks, and the expansion of ancient woodland and species-rich hedgerows will provide vital habitat for lots of creatures vulnerable to our changing climate. Together, the pair have a huge amount of experience and wisdom to share – but have also been keen to create a space that is ultimately about mutual support. Loop Collective offers space and time for busy business-women to come together for the purpose of networking, but also to create a genuine support system – with a big emphasis on wellness. The group was initially formed in February 2023, meeting at the Peak Edge Hotel before finding a home in the private dining space at renowned gastro pub, the Tickled Trout in Barlow where they currently meet monthly.
Following the successful growth of the group, Helen and Michelle are now immersed in the planning of their first full day retreat on 15 March. Michelle says "When we started our search for a venue for the retreat, we knew we wanted somewhere with some seriously good vibes. We’ve been delighted that some of our favourite places in the Chesterfield area have wanted to host us, but we also wanted this day to feel really special, a genuine retreat from the hustle and bustle of running a business and juggling that alongside family commitments and everything else life throws at us." Rise and Recharge will be held at Lorentes, an award-winning tapas restaurant situated on the banks of the River Derwent in the historic Darley Abbey Mills (a UNESCO World Heritage Site).

Meetings often have a guest speaker (always another local female founder or entrepreneur) with previous topics including creating engaging social media posts from Sarah Brammer at Brammer Social Marketing, a discussion around work / life balance with Lisa Hutchinson, founder of Elsie Moss Botanicals; business coach, podcaster and author, Libby Langley and Kelly Edwards, a mindset and wellbeing coach, cultivating your ideal lifestyle business by Melanie Archbould from Cloud-Busting and a session on Menopause and Fatigue jointly led by Diane Evans and Suzanne Smith. Occasional informal catch ups have been held at the Batch House in Chesterfield or on ‘netwalking’ meet ups. It’s these netwalks, and a similarly calming outdoor painting workshop in Linacre woods with celebrated artist, Georgia Peskett, that differentiate Loop from other local networking groups. "We just wanted to offer something different. It’s essentially what we were each searching for… we couldn’t find exactly what we wanted, so we created it ourselves," says Michelle.
"It’s all set to be a very special day and we’re delighted with ticket sales so far – over twenty, talented local business-women have signed up for the day and we’re really excited to bring everyone together," explains Helen. "We’re thrilled to be curating an inspiring day of personal and professional development. Whatever stage you’re at with your business, or career, we welcome you to join us for a day just for you, where you can put aside external pressures and concentrate on your professional development." The stuff of dreams... not nightmares! Words: Paul Chapman
I think there are quite a few of us who have a ‘romantic vision’ of running our own little business. I used to think it would be great to run a bike shop at one point, open the doors at 9am, meeting and greeting lovely, friendly customers, leave the shop in hands of my staff all day, till ringing. Then off home after lunch to enjoy the evening with my feet up with the family… and repeat the next day.
"It’s a 24/7 job. You must take the helm and care about what you do, I have some wonderful staff, but you can’t simply open a small shop and employ someone to stand behind the counter, you need to be involved. This is the only way to make it work, as success comes you can step away slightly, with the right people in place who care like you do, it can work, but this takes time," says Simon.
So, is this view correct? I caught up with Simon Davidson from R P Davidson, The Cheese Factor, situated on the outside of the Market Hall in town.
"It really is so important to be actively involved, I must repeat that you can’t just turn up! It is long hours, you need to be there for customers, typically I’m there at 6am every morning setting up before customers arrive, taking deliveries of cheese, and fresh bread from Jacksons for instance, this early time is great, it’s like I’m warming the business up for the day," explains Simon.
So, what’s it really like to run a small business? "I’ve been involved in the family business all my life,” says Simon. “I started working in the shop when I was at school, I spent a while in the army, leaving at 24 and then came to the family business. "I’ve always helped in the shop and now I run it. When I was younger, I simply didn’t appreciate the time and effort that my father and the family put into it; the work involved, the huge pressures, being pushed and pulled from all angles, most recently the amount of legislation and paperwork, the impact changes have on overheads, staff wages, rising minimum wages etc etc. All this needs time and effort to achieve and the income to pay for this time must come through our sales and ultimately our tills. "10 to 15 years ago the government had a target of £10 an hour, as anyone, I can see why and fully support a fair wage but at that time it seemed like a huge hill to climb. At the end of the day, I sell cheese and food, I need my prices to be sensible so people can afford to call in and I need to pay my staff and cover all my overheads, it’s a tricky task keeping everything in balance." Simon has seen people start businesses with the ‘romantic vision’ mentioned but is keen to point out that no business runs itself, they all need time, effort, and love from those that start them up. As well as keeping the shop stocked at the right levels, "never an easy task," adds Simon, "recalling how his father used to say ‘Pile ‘em high, see ‘em fly, keep them low, they’ll never go!’" The Cheese Factor supply approximately 40 local independent businesses with their products. Many of these businesses we all know and love, including No. 10 Tea Rooms, Highfield House Farm Shop, Society Coffee Shop, Dirty Habit bar and Adam’s Happy Hens to name a few. As I listen, I’m reminded again of ‘The Tale of a Tenner’ video, a two and half minute film showing the whole principle of spending locally and how the money goes around and around in the local economy. Simon comments that supporting the local independent businesses is so important, it’s all too easy to visit or order from the supermarket, he appreciates that time is precious, but people need to understand the impact of their shopping choices. I asked what makes all the hardwork worthwhile? "I enjoy it,” Simon says. “Like any business we've had our ups and downs but we’re still here after 64 years. Dad has handed the business down and entrusted it to me, we’ve always been in the town

Business centre, firstly on Low Pavements, where Jacksons Bakers now trades, to the open air market stalls, then the market hall where Magnolia Barbers are, before moving to number 10 Market Hall in 2010. We’ve had testing times, Covid was difficult, we could have closed but decided not to and we kept things going. "People changed habits and the independents became busy, then once things went back to normal many people dropped out, queues at the market stalls and independents were great to see, but we need to find new and innovating ways to maintain this interest and bring people back into town, that would be fabulous. "The impact of the supermarkets has been massive; I know that in the past there were plans for a supermarket on the Perry's Ford site at Hornsbridge. I saw businesses coming together to fight this, even then you could see the change coming, the move away from small businesses and corner shops. "Today we have the cut price supermarkets fighting each other to deliver what they do cheaper than the next guy. It’s worrying but I’m over it now, I know what we do at The Cheese Factor and concentrate on this and the essentials that work for us. "We’re constantly evolving, we realise we can’t stand still, but we’ve added to our core offering, things like our cheese and wine tasting nights are good fun, it brings new people into the store, and we get to know them. "These people join our band of loyal customers, younger gen z’s, millennials, gen x, boomers and the silent generations all coming in to buy from us. The younger generations are experimenting with cheese flavours and it’s great to see the smiles and enthusiasm they have; we can help with this through our advice and knowledge in the shop. "Chesterfield is a great place in which to live and work, there are a number of great independent businesses in the town centre and I really do believe that we’ll move with the times to ensure there is an experience worth coming into the town centre for." Business The pair of them laugh about how they were drying washing in the early days in their back gardens, and the neighbours and any family members garden who lived close by. “It’s a simple thing but people much prefer laundry to be air dried,” explains John, “it’s simply fresher. You’ll regularly see sheets and duvet covers flapping in the wind at the courtyard when the weather allows.”

Brampton Laundry and Cleaning Services (BL&CS) was established just two years ago in March 2022, they started small in a unit behind the Real Ale Corner. A cleaning business looking after holiday lets and doing laundry on a small scale. Now exactly two years on they have expanded into the unit next door and when I visited were midway through a refit with new machines to further increase capacity. John started the cleaning business during Covid after being made redundant, "primarily to give me something to do," he laughs. "I saw a gap in the market for a 5 star cleaning service and secured a contract with the Chesterfield Royal Hospital and then several large care facilities. This has helped us lead the way in commercial and domestic cleaning, we now have several large medical facilities on the books.
Today BL&CS is a team of seven staff running the laundry side of things 24/7 and if you include the cleaning staff, they are 26 strong. Not bad from two people just two years ago. They provide services to several large hotels in the area and are picking up new clients almost daily now. “People buy from people,” says John. “What we do is very personal, it’s important that we get it right, our team care and this leads to recommendations and then new clients can see first-hand how we manage that relationship.” Being located on the west side of Chesterfield turned out to be a perfect location as well. One area of the business that is doing well is the cleaning, management, and turnaround of Peak District holiday lets. Also, with so many rental properties changing tenants they offer end of tenancy cleans to get your properties spick and span ready for new tenants. Again, feedback from rentals, holiday lets, and domestic work has been

The refit work has increased capacity significantly and although we’ve talked about commercial work, the team offer domestic service washes, cleans and duvets etc. “Things are now so busy we’ve recently added a booking system adds Cheryl, it’s great to be able to see the entire workload and assess where new work can be allocated.” John adds, “one thing that we’ve noticed is as the cost of washing and drying creeps up due to the rising energy prices, people are looking to domestic service washes which in the long run may be saving them money with of course energy being so high.” It's great to see yet another local independent business growing so well, if you're in need of laundry and/or cleaning services either domestic or commercial, give them a call.

A new future for our young people
Cannon Mill
Words: Cannon Mill Trust CIO Images: Cannon Mill Trust CIO & NEDIAS Newsletter Have you ever wandered down Dock Walk, at the back of Wickes and Wheatbridge Surgery, only to wonder about the building with the plaque of a cannon on it? This is Chesterfield’s oldest industrial building, the Cannon Mill and until last year was in a very poor condition, with the imminent risk that it would collapse in a storm. However, assisted by a generous donation from the Chesterfield General Charitable Fund a local group of volunteers have gathered together to form a new charity to save it, providing a new future both for the building and for young people who are struggling in our local community. Cannon Mill was actually a part of the nationally famous Griffin Foundry, founded in 1775. Built as a casting house for the foundry, it contributed to important world events. Cannonballs made here were used at the Battle of Trafalgar, helping
the Duke of Wellington to defeat Napoleon and the French Navy. Cannons made here were likely to have been used in the American War of Independence and were fired in Chesterfield to celebrate the court martial acquittal of Admiral Keppel. If you peer closely from the roadside, you can see the iron water wheel and wheel pit still in place on the south side of the building. This was originally Page 24
fed from two feeder dams either side of Dock Walk and we hope that someday this amazing feature will spin again and generate electricity from the river. Many other important things were made in this foundry, among them the structure of the famous Belper East Mill and steam engines for mines all over the area (including one made for Magpie Mine and one which is in London’s Science Museum). After its years as a foundry, the building was used as a corn mill and an engineering workshop as part of the Robinson’s Packaging works. Despite being Grade II listed, the building was last restored in 1957. Since then, it has fallen into disuse and serious disrepair, with brickwork defects, boarded up windows and a major hole in the roof. The surrounding courtyard workshops
were demolished in the 1980s. Without a reason to exist it was an unloved building, despite its historical importance. Chesterfield has seen a significant decline in youth services and projects over the past 10 years and more, and the young people of our town are suffering because of it. The Cannon Mill Trust is a youth charity, aiming to re-engage young people who are struggling in their community: providing

them with hope, learning and a future through finding practical skills that they enjoy. A key to this is celebrating the cultural and industrial heritage of our town: helping young people to learn that there are many practical engineering and crafting skills which can interest them, can provide a practical outlet for their energy and improve both our town and the wider environment. This innovative project puts young people at its heart; converting an unloved and unused heritage building to create a thriving hub to develop practical skills and a home for creative social enterprises. We want to empower the forgotten youth of our town and help them to develop the skills, aspirations and confidence to enter the job market and carve out a positive way forward. One of the areas of focus will be the environment and the circular economy; building workshop space to house bike repairs, a tool library, upcycling and repairing unwanted and unused items. This will start with the repair of the building itself: giving young people and community members an opportunity to learn heritage building skills alongside the restoration. The project’s cornerstone tenant will be the cycle repair workshop currently based at Monkey Park Community Hub. This workshop has been thriving for a number of years and engaging many young people in the area, helping them to develop skills and be a part of something that turns lives around. A temporary roof has now been installed which has saved the building from collapsing, thus saving the building for future generations. The Cannon Mill Trust charity team are currently working with Robinson PLC on exciting plans for the future. We wish to work with our local community on detailed designs and restoring the building during 2025, to coincide with the 250th anniversary of the Griffin Foundry. Celebrating Their 10th Birthday

Way back in January 2014, a small gathering of ladies got together to form a choir. It was there and then that the Honey Belles Ladies Choir was born. Roll on 10 years and they are celebrating their milestone anniversary with a concert and party back at their old stomping ground in Ashover. Over the 10 years this choir have gone from strength to strength. They have swelled in number from 12 to 50 ladies and now rehearse at St John's Church in Walton. Bonds within the group are tight and firm friendships have been made over the years. Memories of making music together are strong. They have performed on BBC Radio, competed against other choirs on national television with Gareth Malone and raised thousands of pounds for local charities, including sponsoring a puppy for Guide Dogs, aptly named Honey Belle. They won North East Derbyshire’s Got Talent and have sung pitch-side for Chesterfield FC, as well as being the penultimate performers treading the boards of the Pomegranate Theatre before it closed for renovation. Chesterfield Bypass has also been their stage in the small hours of the morning, singing in the Sparkle Walkers for Ashgate Hospice, year on year. The Honey Belles look to take 2024 by storm with performances already on the calendar. They’re hosting a concert with Ireland Colliery Band at the Speedwell Rooms in May, supporting a charity concert for Ashgate Hospice in April, performing at Chesterfield Library in March during the Peddler Market weekend, recording a Christmas CD and celebrated their anniversary concert at the Ashover Parish Rooms on Saturday 27 January. Throughout the spring the group are opening their rehearsal room to ladies who are looking to enjoy singing and friendship. Be Part of the Solution, not the Pollution Words: Daiz Grove It may seem trashy, but let’s talk about litter. It’s a common problem for everyone be it food, clothes or plastic but what can we do about? Let’s talk about the devastating effects that waste has on not only the environment but people too. Did you know that as of 2022 there are over 500 landfill sites in the UK alone? And that as the waste sent to these landfill sites increases; the space they occupy doesn’t. As a result land that could have better uses, more housing or farming for instance, degrades as the rubbish piles up. As the rubbish degrades, harmful toxins are absorbed into the ground and atmosphere. Some of these release greenhouse gases (methane or carbon dioxide) which contribute to the evergrowing issues of climate change: they hold heat from the sun not letting it escape, so the more gas - the more heat is trapped. However, it’s not just the air that’s being affected it’s the ground too. Leachate (toxic liquid) flows from rubbish dumps and leaks into the soil, sometimes contaminating water supplies. This public health issue can cause cancers or blood disorders, the health risks vary due to the multitude of random chemicals found throughout. Next up plastics: they are in nearly everything we use, so why in recent years have we tried to reduce plastic use? Plastic is non-biodegradable - it takes decades for it to decompose, from 20 to 500 years depending on the plastic. Plastics also release toxins as they are made from crude oils (petroleum, diesel) and kill many animals which get caught in plastic bags, bottles and ingesting plastic straws. Overall, one of the worst things is micro plastics, tiny particles of plastics smaller than the cells in your body. Micro plastics are found to be a carcinogenic, as a result they increase likelihood of cancer not only in adults but can cause birth complications and childhood cancers.
cheap and toxic textile dyes with equally cheap materials resulting in clothing that is not only bad for the environment but also a waste of your money. Not only do they have an environmental cost (the fashion industry is one of the worst polluters) when clothes are thrown into landfill, the manufacturers are often found exploiting their workers, paying them low wages to work in awful conditions. It plays into the idea that if you’re repeating a clothing look you’re behind on the times; but that’s simply not the case – it’s an idea spread by influential brands to increase consumerism. Brookfield is, like many other schools, conscious of rubbish around the school. Compared to other learning establishments it does well by having separate bins for paper recycling and is generally quite clear of rubbish. Brookfield has many bins around the building - you won’t walk for too long without seeing one, which is great as it discourages littering. Overall, I think most schools could learn a thing or two about separate bins. I would suggest bins for plastic bottles, paper and general waste. I know some people don’t always get the concept of separate bins so it’s easier to keep the labelling straight forward. What can we do to reduce this? Try recycling waste; donate items you no longer need (chairs, clothes or storage units) to charity shops; sell clothes you don’t need anymore; buy from environmentally-friendly (carbon-neutral, local) shops; try to avoid eating foods wrapped in a lot of plastic; and look out for plastic or landfill petitions to reduce risk. Most of all try be more conscious about how your actions affect the world around you. Recycling today will lead to a better tomorrow.

Asthma+Lung UK is a charity that believes everyone should have healthy lungs, they are on a mission to change the way that lung health is perceived - the only UK charity that fights for everyone’s right to breathe. Alistair Phillips from Newbold is running the London marathon in April this year and raising funds for Asthma+Lung UK as he runs. “I’ve got Asthma myself and suffered with it. When I was young I couldn’t do any sports or exercise, and saw my late Grandma suffer with Asthma. It’s for this reason that I’m dedicating my efforts to her and am aiming to raise £2000 for the charity," says Alistair.

100 Years of Choral Singing
Calling all 6-8yr olds! Alastair and Sarah Smith have been in touch to share the news that they have places available in the 1st Holymoorside Beaver Scouts troop. Beavers is open to boys and girls aged 6 to 8 years. "We meet weekly in term time, usually on Mondays between 6 and 7pm at the United Reformed Church in Holymoorside. "We do fun games, crafts and indoor and outdoor activities. We work towards “badges” on topics as diverse as Adventure, Sports, Camp Craft, Cooking, Science and more. We awarded nearly 200 badges in 2023 and Beavers is a great way to meet other young people, try new activities, have fun and grow your confidence," explains Alastair. Old Brampton's Big Bell Centenary Celebrations
The following day Junior children from nearby Wigley School climbed the tower to enjoy a go at bellringing, and decorated paper bells for a display in the church at Christmas.

As you'd expect, ringers from Old Brampton and further afield have been doing special pieces of ringing on the bells. These include quarter-peals (about 45 minutes) and peals (about three hours), all requiring utmost concentration and stamina to complete, but sound wonderful across the village and surrounding countryside. It's not over yet, as the celebrations will continue until Bell Sunday on 12 May 2024.
Big celebrations have been taking place at Old Brampton. The six bells in the church tower became 100 years old last year (2023), so the ringers, church and village have been celebrating with events throughout the year including two fayres and a special service. In 1923 the five old bells were recast at Loughborough Bellfoundry, and augmented into today's heavier ring of six bells. This was paid for by Edwin Clay Barnes of Ashgate Lodge, who was, at that time, a Churchwarden, High Sheriff of Derbyshire and Chairman of Chesterfield Royal Hospital.

So it was absolutely wonderful to welcome the current High Sheriff of Derbyshire, Theresa Peltier, and members of the Barnes family to the Big Bell Centenary Celebration service in December, alongside the Chairman of NEDDC, Cllr Martin Thacker and Consort Jean Spencer. At this service the Bishop of Repton, the Rt Revd Malcolm Macnaughton, rededicated the bells, chimed a bell and anointed ringers' hands with oil. Afterwards the schoolroom was packed for bell-themed refreshments. The popular 1940s Market is set to return to Chesterfield this spring – bringing a range of free entertainment to the town centre for the whole family to enjoy. The action-packed market will be returning on Thursday 11 April 2024, transporting the town centre back to the 1940s with a variety of music, street performance and fancy dress. Visitors can also expect to see the return of the replica spitfire – a popular attraction at previous events. Organised by Chesterfield Borough Council, the event will happen alongside the popular weekly Thursday flea market. The date has been brought forward from the autumn to allow for the start of town centre regeneration work later in the year, as part of the multi-million pound 'Regenerating the Heart of Chesterfield' project. More information about the event plans and entertainment will be shared closer to the time. Keep checking the council’s website and social media channels for details. Councillor Kate Sarvent, cabinet member for town centres and visitor economy, said: “The 1940s Market is enjoyed by residents and visitors alike. There are not too many places you can go to see a range of free street entertainment like we have on offer here. “Residents and visitors enjoyed the 1940s Market that took place in November last year, so we’re really pleased that we don’t have to wait long for its return. “We encourage you to put the date in your diary so you don’t miss out.” Page 38

Vindication Swim Pioneering swimmer, Mercedes Gleitze, returns to Chesterfield with a new film - almost a century after her incredible endurance swim. In celebration of International Women's Day, the much-anticipated film, Vindication Swim, is hitting cinemas across the UK on the 8 March, and dives into the extraordinary life of Mercedes Gleitze, who in 1927 became the first British woman to swim the English Channel. The film depicts Mercedes’ upstream struggle in overcoming both the cold waters of the English Channel and the oppressive society of 1920s England. However, after a rival comes forward claiming to have accomplished the same feat, Mercedes is forced into battle to retain her record and her legacy. Written and directed by award-winning filmmaker Elliott Hasler, Vindication Swim stars British-Irish actress Kirsten Callaghan in her debut role as Mercedes Gleitze, who trained for months in the English Channel before filming began. The film also stars John Locke (Darkest Hour, Poor Things, The Favourite) alongside James Wilby (Maurice, Gosford Park, Howards End) and Douglas Hodge (Joker, The Great, Black Mirror). Mercedes Gleitze, a name that has been largely lost to history, also became the first person to complete many other incredible swims around the world, including the Straits of Gibraltar, the Dardanelles and distance between Robben Island and Cape Town. Mercedes also made waves in Chesterfield by completing a mammoth, 45.5 hour endurance swim at the historic Central School Baths between the 15 and 16th January 1932. The inclusion of Chesterfield within the legacy of Mercedes Gleitze adds a local touch to this global narrative, celebrating the resilience and spirit of a woman who dared to challenge the status quo.

Garden Tips Mid-March onwards is the time to plant out potatoes, assuming that the weather is not too cold. If frost is forecast, simply delay the planting until it is over. Once the foliage starts to show, be prepared to cover it if a frost is forecast; most varieties will recover from a light frost but may be weakened, affecting the yield. The cover can be as simple as a sheet of newspaper – anything as long as the foliage isn't directly exposed to the freezing air will usually be fine at this time of year. Plant onion sets and shallots. Birds sometimes think the tips are worms and pull them up; just push them back if this happens. To discourage the birds, run a few lines of black thread tightly over the bed.

Give perennial herbs a good tidy up, rosemary and sage can often do with a trim now and you can divide and replant clumps of chives and mint also. It is time to buy and plant out young plants of thyme, sage and rosemary. If the weather is warm the lawn will start to grow, so if there's a dry day give it a cut with the blades set fairly high. Petrol mowers can usually cope with longer, wetter grass but electrics may struggle, so try not to ever let it get too long. In March, seeds to sow indoors include tomatoes, aubergines, peppers, broccoli, calabrese, lettuce, Brussel sprouts, summer cabbage and try growing beetroot in clusters in modules. Weeds will start into growth, so try to prevent them getting hold by regular weeding. At the same time you can prepare beds by lightly digging them over, incorporating any old compost you have. Deadhead daffodils, letting the foliage die down naturally, then removing it when it starts to turn yellow. This is when the bulb's reserves of energy are restored, and it prepares for next year - tying it up prevents this happening efficiently and doesn't look nice. There will be a lot more heat in the sun, so open greenhouse and conservatory doors if you have seedlings in them, so they don’t overheat. But clear sunny days often mean clear, chilly nights, so remember to close them again. The winter, so far, has been kind to slugs and snails, so expect there to be lots this year. As it gets milder they will start to appear in the garden, so be prepared to combat them. There are lots of possible solutions (pellets, beer traps, and copper bands) but, whatever you do, you'll never entirely be rid of them, so concentrate your efforts on precious plants and small areas. Plants in containers will appreciate a top dressing. Carefully remove an inch or so of soil and replace it with a new one suitable for containers; it might seem unnecessary to use different sorts of composts for different places but, especially with pots, the right kind makes a big difference. We’ve now reached the time when the gardening year traditionally starts to get going, so there’s lots to do; keeping on top of it all is the key to success. However, it can be weather dependent - never worry if you can’t do something at the exact time columns like this say you should; relaxing and enjoying it is far more important; get round to things when you can. If you’re trying to get your children interested in gardening then all your good work could be undone by dragging them out into the cold and wet for several hours to do something that could well wait for a week or two.

The Berry Effect So, what are you gonna wear for the promotion celebrations? Today is Saturday, it's the 10 February, 2024 and we’ve just drawn to Ebbsfleet Utd (Second from bottom of the National League - remember those days Spireites?) to maintain our unbeaten home streak. We are still top of the league. We are still 20 odd points clear. We are still, well, brilliant! So I don't want to preach to the converted or repeat the mind blowing facts and statistics that's been all over social media about how we have finally turned the corner in this league and how we are on the verge of returning back into League Page 62
Two. No, what I thought I'd do is simply focus on Mary Berry's grandson - James. No, I made that bit up. She's not really his gran. I just want to promote this fantastic young footballer who's clearly found his feet at the club, from supersub to the starting 11. The Berry Effect. James Jon Berry-McNally was born on 10 December 2000 in Wigan. He first played for Liverpool u18s before a trail of loans and free transfers from the u21s (Wigan/Hull) moving on to Macclesfield. Scoring an incredible 42 goals from 67 appearances at “Silk Town” or “Treacle Town” if you're a traditionalist, Berry was then snapped by us on 10 August 2023 on a three-year deal, for an undisclosed fee.

Having started pretty much from the bench as an impact sub, he has now earned his place in the starting 11. Goal wise, he didn't have to wait long to get on the score sheet as his first goal came against Wealdstone the following month in a 3-2 win. His second came in the FA Trophy a couple of months later in the clubs 6-1 win against Southport. His third came against his old club Altrincham in January. After being subbed on, he bagged the winner in the 83rd minute which as you can see from the photo, meant something to him. He didn't have to wait long for his fourth goal, just 11 days, that came when he started the game against Southend. On the 27 January it took just 28 minutes for him to net the first in the Spireites’ 3-0 win. And just like his 3rd goal, his face was beaming as he celebrated! Also it's worth noting here Berry's shirt number is 18. His fourth goal helped break the club's record of 18 consecutive home wins. Berry's fifth came away at Eastleigh five days after Southend. Again, starting the game and again scoring first in a 3-1 win he's definitely found his feet on the pitch, just as he did for Macclesfield. His sixth was three days after Eastleigh at Dagenham and Redbridge. Keeping up the momentum of starting each match. It was a cold and windy night and even before his 31st min goal, if you see the highlights on YouTube, Berry's delightful cheeky backheel on the wing to set up the first of many Spireite attacks was fantastic to see. This just shows the confidence the lad has. I'm sure by the time you're reading this he'll have scored many more goals. I can see him reaching double figures in this league campaign. It's good to see a player like Berry playing with superb confidence in the team and challenging the likes of Dobra for a place in the team. Personally, I prefer Berry over Dobra. Yes both are packed with energy and both are equally as likely to run and take on defenders but for me, I just feel Berry has the edge on shooting and finishing off a run with a shot at goal. I like that and given his age he's definitely one to keep hold of in League Two. So to round up and to answer my own question. Jeans and a hoodie. That'll be my choice for the big day! COYBs!
