Nesting Season!
May 1 through October 31
The Resort at Longboat Key Club thanks you for helping us to protect our valuable sea turtles!
If you see a turtle in distress, call the Manager on duty at extension 3000, otherwise please observe without interference. 2
From May through October, during the height of tourist season, many sea turtle nests are dug by nesting female sea turtles on the shores of our beautiful Gulf Coast. All sea turtles that nest in the U.S. are either listed as threatened or endangered and there are penalties for killing, harassing or harming these turtles. The most common sea turtle nesting on the shores of Longboat Key is the Loggerhead, which is listed as threatened. Other sea turtles that have nested in Florida are the Green (threatened), Leatherback (endangered), Kemp’s Ridley (endangered) and Hawksbill (endangered) turtles.
within 60 days and the hatchlings will race to the sea before they become snacks for hungry predators. Wildlife is not the only threat to the hatchlings. Beach visitors can also disturb nests and nesting sea turtles. To see sea turtles up close and to learn more about them, you may visit The Aquarium at Mote Marine Laboratory, 1600 Ken Thompson Parkway in Sarasota. You can also participate in one of our complimentary “Beach Walk and Sea Turtle Talks” here at the Resort. To help keep sea turtles safe, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and the National Park Service suggests the following guidelines.
A female sea turtle lays an average of 100 eggs in each nest. If the nest is left undisturbed, the eggs will hatch, on average,
How can you help protect Sea Turtles? • Minimize beachfront lighting. Close blinds and draperies in oceanfront rooms and turn off outdoor lighting. • Remove all recreational equipment from the beach when not in use. This includes chairs, umbrellas, towels, beach toys, etc. • Do not construct beach fires during the nesting season. The hatchlings could become disoriented and crawl toward the fire. • Refrain from using flashlights on the beach. • Do not take flash photography of a nesting sea turtle or hatchling.
• Remove all of your trash from the beach including cigarette and cigar butts. • Do not trample beach vegetation. • If you dig a hole in the sand, fill it in before you leave the beach for the day. • Leave tracks left by the turtles undisturbed. • Do not disturb nest markers. We have volunteer programs that protect and monitor sea turtle nests. • Report unmarked nests, hurt or dead sea turtles to the front desk so that they may contact appropriate agencies.

• Automated equipment for timed golf cart charging during off-peak electrical hours GOLF MAINTENANCE Organic turf and landscape management has the goal of using techniques that are results oriented and decrease impact on the environment. These techniques also provide sustainable and marketable conditions. We rely on products that consist of naturally occurring organic compounds that are derived from plant materials, biological organisms, or manufactured natural deposits. We also apply, record, and monitor according to the current requirements of Best Management Practices (BMP’s) as mandated by state, county, and local ordinances with regards to pest management and try to implement proper plant placement throughout the property. Specific approaches:
• All dry fertilizers used on golf courses
meet or exceed BMP requirements and primarily consist of Water Insoluble Nitrogen (WIN) derived from bone meals, fish meals, manures, and bio-solids fortified with humic and fulvic acids and sunflower hull ash to provide a slow release potassium source, also sometimes inoculated with mycorrhizae fungi beneficial for mining soil nutrients.
• Sprayed material consists of filtered
organic acids, purchased compost teas, purchased and brewed bacterial strains, and plant derived amino acids and other natural sugars. 8
• Plant nematodes are treated with timed
applications of Bacillus firmus based on degree days in Spring and Fall.
• Lake areas are treated for weed
development and algae blooms with only biodegradable dyes.
• All other pesticide and herbicide
treatments are limited to spot applications adhering to label requirements, threshold monitoring, and BMP mandates.
• Water use and management is recorded
daily and sampled monthly for total dissolved solids. Soils are sampled seasonally using both exchangeable and paste information. Tissue samples are taken weekly.
• Daily cleaning of maintenance vehicles
is performed with recycled water treated with special microbes to digest oils and other foreign solids. Grass clippings are separated, dried, composted and returned to the golf course as recycled nutrients

Saving Lives. Saving The Planet. Helping The Needy. Clean the World and its generous Hospitality Partners have launched a global hygiene revolution centered on a simple idea: recycling soap and saving lives. “According to the World Health Organization, a significant number of children under the age of 5 could be saved with access to bar soap and hygiene education.”

Clean the World is a social enterprise with the mission of saving millions of lives around the world. Clean the World leads a Global Hygiene Revolution to distribute recycled soap and hygiene products from more than 5,000+ hotel and resort partners to children and families in countries with a high death rate due to acute respiratory infection (pneumonia) and diarrheal diseases (cholera) – which are two of the top killers of children under 5. Since 2009, Clean the World has distributed more than 46 million bars of soap in 127 countries and the Resort at Longboat Key Club has been involved since 2010. 9 | RESORT EXPERIENCE MAGAZINE

WELLNESS:
A Lifestyle Choice By Jeff Mayers
16
W
hen we think of wellness, what comes to mind? How would you define wellness? Are there different types of wellness? These are all great questions and the answers to these questions will vary. Wellness stretches across many platforms. Finding what wellness means to you should have a positive impact on your lifestyle and well-being.
and weight loss, from preventing osteoporosis to relieving stress and promoting heart health.(5) Depending upon your age, you can determine the best approach to take. For example at the age of 40, you may require a low impact workout whereas you burn calories. As you progress in life, your workout regimen should change, however remaining active will no doubt impact your life.
As we take a look into wellness, one writer shared that there is not a universally accepted definition of wellness.(1) When exploring definitions, seven different publications provided broadly defined interpretations. For example, one definition is “The quality of state of being in good health especially in an actively sought goal.(2)” Another definition is “An active process through which people become aware of, and make choices toward, a more successful existence.(3)” However when taking into consideration each of the seven definitions, there are some commonalities. These include the following; a choice one pursues, a positive outlook on your body, mind and soul and finally a quality, state or process.(4)
Wellness is a lifestyle choice and one that can have a profound impact on your health and well-being. Understanding the importance, the club’s management and staff continue to innovate and create new approaches with wellness in mind. The variety of offerings which include Massage, Reflexology, Fitness and Wellness are complimented by the varieties of menu offerings at the club’s restaurants. As you read the subsequent articles, you will be provided an overview of what is offered throughout the club that you may find to benefit your overall well-being. As always, the resort management and staff are open to new ideas and suggestions that will benefit the membership.
Studies continue to support that exercise at any age provides multiple benefits even beyond weight control

Links on Longboat (Closing for Maintenace June - July) Redesigned by Ron Garl in 2014, Links on Longboat (formerly Islandside) has many characteristics of a seaside links course. Ocean breezes, expansive natural areas and big greens create an incredible golfing experience. Links on Longboat stretches out to 6,748 yards from end to end with five sets of tees to accommodate any level of play. The Par 71 layout demands accuracy off the tee. Most holes feature small waterways that run along one side of the fairway to force you into a decision on placement validating the original “watery challenge” description. Once you have driven your ball in a good fairway position that is where the fun begins. Our new
Ron Garl design challenges your iron play but also does not penalize you for an errant shot. Fewer bunkers and more grassed collection areas allow the golfer to have an easy pitch to the hole if you have missed the green. Each green has been completely redesigned with Ron’s creative imagination and all 18 holes have been re-grassed with the superior, salt tolerant Platinum Paspalum grass. In addition to the beauty of the natural wildlife seen on a daily basis, over 5,000 Palm trees along with pink and white Oleanders line the Links on Longboat.
Harbourside Courses (Closing for Maintenace August-September) Harbourside is located three miles north of the Links on Longboat and is commonly known as “the Member’s course” here at the Club. Harbourside consists of three nines that make up three distinctive eighteen hole options. All three nines vary in characteristics but all pose a great challenge when deciding which to play.
reward opportunities. More open and forgiving than the White Egret, this nine has water that plays into many shots. The Red Hawk measures 3,314 and this past season the entire nine was re-sodded with the ever popular Platinum Paspalum grass. This new playing surface gives you a great lie every time and makes the game a pleasure to play.
Harbourside opened for play in 1982. Many of the holes border the Sarasota Bay and our own Longboat Key Club Moorings which makes for a beautiful setting. The White Egret nine measures 3,342 yards and has the least amount of water of the three nines. Don’t let the lack of water on this nine fool you. Its difficulty is found in tight fairways which demands accuracy off the tee. Once you’ve positioned yourself correctly, big inviting greens give you plenty of target to aim at.
The final nine at Harbourside is our famous “Blue Heron” measuring 3,368 yards—our signature nine of all 45 holes here at Longboat Key Club. This nine was redesigned in 2005 and this year re-sodded with the new Platinum Paspalum grass as well. This nine boarders the Sarasota Bay with breathtaking views at every turn. It contains nine “signature” holes and challenges every part of your game. Tree-lined fairways and swirling winds put a premium on shot-making and course strategy. Courses designed by Ron Garl. Lifestyle Dining By Robert Weil

hen it comes to health and wellness awareness, diet is quickly becoming front and center. More and more people are making diet part of their lifestyle. This healthier focus has resulted in an increase of varied food requests as they pertain to each individual’s needs. In addition, many Americans are becoming aware of food allergies.
Now more than 15 million Americans Vegetarian have been restricted by food allergies. Over 90% of those food-allergies are a result of the eight most common food allergens; peanuts, tree nuts, fish, shellfish, dairy, eggs, wheat, and soy. Food intolerances are also becoming increasingly common–where they are not necessarily life-threatening as Gluten-Free an allergy—they can ruin your day.
Nearly one-third of meals eaten by the average American are consumed away from home. In our restaurants every day, at every meal period, the frequency of requests is growing. The multitude of diet trends like Dairy-Free low carb, sugar-free, low fat, Keto, and Paleo has gained popularity. Even lifestyle choices like Vegan, Vegetarian, and just plain food preferences based on personal likes and dislikes have been on the incline over the last several years. How do your club’s restaurants handle the surge of dietary restrictions and requests? We choose to do more by offering alternative substitutions and accommodating requests, rather than having multiple menus to cover the dietary needs. This way we are not narrowing choices in any one direction.

Our culinary team tries to be as flexible as possible with special requests; just ask your server, as many members and guests already know. Although our menus offer a variety of dishes directed toward specific dining requirements–often identifying those menu items with a symbol, we feel it’s our flexibility and the alternative products we offer (i.e. gluten-free breads, pizza, pasta, and cauliflower rice) that provide the most options.
We also allow for dish or menu modification. Just understand, this often requires additional time as we will be catering prepared ingredients to specific needs or requests. When it comes to allergens or health-based food intolerance, whenever and wherever your dining, be an advocate for yourself. When it involves food allergies, please be as clear with the server as you can. In addition, given the needs, we will also have a manager drop by the table to ensure these things are correct. Our aim is to make your dining experience as pleasurable and safe as we can.

Lisa Deschler | Massage Therapist
Deep Tissue Massage When you think about getting a massage, your mind probably imagines relaxing music, and the soft lulling motions of hands rubbing the stress from your back, neck, and shoulders. Spending a relaxing day at The Spa is by far a good way to do just that, but what about the benefits behind getting a massage? Unlike other massage techniques that focus on relaxation, deep tissue massage helps to treat the cause of pain by releasing muscle tension and focusing more on the deeper layers of muscle and fascia–the protective layer that surrounds muscles and joints. These deeper tissues can form knots and adhesions that can limit movement and hinder circulation.
Lisa grew up in Boston, Massachusetts; studied in California, then resided for twenty years in Europe. She is fluent in German. Her passion is Deep Tissue Massage using Neuro-muscular strokes. As a runner herself, she can relate to muscle soreness due to tough workouts. Another favorite of Lisa's is the Swedish Massage and the various Rituals we offer at the Spa. She enjoys having more time with the client which allows them to maximize their relaxation. Her main goal is to make sure that the client leaves The Spa feeling great and looking forward to their next appointment!
Karla Harris | Massage Therapist Karla started working at the Longboat Key Club over 13 years ago. Graduating from Sarasota School of Massage Therapy in 2008, she has been in practice for 11 years. During her career, she has become specialized in deep tissue as well as sports massage, with certifications in active isolated stretching (AIS, Mattes Method) trigger point and neuromuscular therapy, and other modalities as hot stone, bamboo massage, aromatherapy, and Swedish massage. Caring about every client is her main goal and to help them release stressful tension while leaving healthy and feeling relaxed.
Deep tissue massage is known to alleviate aches, stiff neck, upper, and lower back pain, muscle tightness, sciatica, tennis elbow, fibromyalgia or arthritic pain. At The Spa, we offer members and guests the opportunity to take advantage of services that can help to alleviate or manage chronic pain. We have eight licensed massage therapists with significant training in deep tissue massage. Services are offered in 50, 80 or 100-minutes.

Reflexology
Whether you play golf, bounce around the tennis courts, workout at the gym, or anything in between, there's a lot of weight and stress being put on your hands and feet each day. Reflexology is a relaxing therapy that can be used as an option for pain relief through a pressure point massage technique. This technique utilizes the feet, hands, and ears corresponding to areas of the body through pressure point manipulation. Imagine there are strings connecting areas of your body to specific zones located on your hands, feet, and ears and these areas of your body can be adjusted or managed through these zones. Reflexology has been used for thousands of years as an alternative treatment for a variety of conditions and is also known to stimulate the central nervous system, nerve function, increase energy, and boost circulation. Treatments can also be used to prevent migraines, back pain, multiple sclerosis, arthritis, insomnia, and digestive disorders. While people that suffer from injury or surgery can see a reduction in recovery time, people that suffer from sleep disorders, and depression may also see improvements. The benefits can go on. The Spa currently offers a range for service in 30 or 50-minute increments.
What about Steam?
The relaxing scent of eucalyptus and essential oils can be caught as you enter the tranquil separate steam rooms located in both the men's and women's spa locker rooms. There are many benefits to utilizing a steam room beyond the relaxation it provides. People who bask in steam often experience toxin release, and tension removal, while it is also known to open sinuses and promote healthy blood flow.

Q: Why is it a modality you chose to specialize in?
Active Isolated Stretching (AIS) Q & A with Alisa Zavala Personal Trainer, AIS Specialist, Group Exercise Instructor
Q: How do clients benefit the most from AIS? A: It increases the range of motion and mobility. It’s different than standard stretching and It feels great and helps to continue sports and a active lifestyle. The “lengthen and strengthen” is the best way to describe the basis of this style.
A: I have to thank my clients and Longboat Key Club member for encouraging me to study AIS. Once I took the beginning AIS practitioner certification, I was hooked. Prior to this, I studied massage therapy at Sarasota School of Massage Therapy so I had a “feel” for it. With Arron Mattes as the creator/ instructor as a mentor, I pursued the Advanced AIS Practioner certification.
Q: If someone is considering an AIS session, what would you say to them to persuade them to try it once? A: I’m excited daily on the progress and improvements my clients and I are seeing.
