Nesting Season!

May 1 through October 31

The Resort at Longboat Key Club thanks you for helping us to protect our valuable sea turtles!

If you see a turtle in distress, call the Manager on duty at extension 3000, otherwise please observe without interference. 6

From May through October, during the height of tourist season, many sea turtle nests are dug by nesting female sea turtles on the shores of our beautiful Gulf Coast. All sea turtles that nest in the U.S. are either listed as threatened or endangered and there are penalties for killing, harassing or harming these turtles. The most common sea turtle nesting on the shores of Longboat Key is the Loggerhead, which is listed as threatened. Other sea turtles that have nested in Florida are the Green (threatened), Leatherback (endangered), Kemp’s Ridley (endangered) and Hawksbill (endangered) turtles.

within 60 days and the hatchlings will race to the sea before they become snacks for hungry predators. Wildlife is not the only threat to the hatchlings. Beach visitors can also disturb nests and nesting sea turtles. To see sea turtles up close and to learn more about them, you may visit The Aquarium at Mote Marine Laboratory, 1600 Ken Thompson Parkway in Sarasota. You can also participate in one of our complimentary “Beach Walk and Sea Turtle Talks” here at the Resort. To help keep sea turtles safe, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and the National Park Service suggests the following guidelines.

A female sea turtle lays an average of 100 eggs in each nest. If the nest is left undisturbed, the eggs will hatch, on average,

How can you help protect Sea Turtles? • Minimize beachfront lighting. Close blinds and draperies in oceanfront rooms and turn off outdoor lighting. • Remove all recreational equipment from the beach when not in use. This includes chairs, umbrellas, towels, beach toys, etc. • Do not construct beach fires during the nesting season. The hatchlings could become disoriented and crawl toward the fire. • Refrain from using flashlights on the beach. • Do not take flash photography of a nesting sea turtle or hatchling.

• Remove all of your trash from the beach including cigarette and cigar butts. • Do not trample beach vegetation. • If you dig a hole in the sand, fill it in before you leave the beach for the day. • Leave tracks left by the turtles undisturbed. • Do not disturb nest markers. We have volunteer programs that protect and monitor sea turtle nests. • Report unmarked nests, hurt or dead sea turtles to the front desk so that they may contact appropriate agencies.

Links on Longboat (Closing for Maintenace September 5th - October 1st) Redesigned by Ron Garl in 2014, Links on Longboat (formerly Islandside) has many characteristics of a seaside links course. Ocean breezes, expansive natural areas and big greens create an incredible golfing experience. Links on Longboat stretches out to 6,748 yards from end to end with five sets of tees to accommodate any level of play. The Par 71 layout demands accuracy off the tee. Most holes feature small waterways that run along one side of the fairway to force you into a decision on placement validating the original “watery challenge” description. Once you have driven your ball in a good fairway position that is where the fun begins. Our new

Ron Garl design challenges your iron play but also does not penalize you for an errant shot. Fewer bunkers and more grassed collection areas allow the golfer to have an easy pitch to the hole if you have missed the green. Each green has been completely redesigned with Ron’s creative imagination and all 18 holes have been re-grassed with the superior, salt tolerant Platinum Paspalum grass. In addition to the beauty of the natural wildlife seen on a daily basis, over 5,000 Palm trees along with pink and white Oleanders line the Links on Longboat.

Harbourside Courses (Closing for Maintenace July 5th - September 5th) Harbourside is located three miles north of the Links on Longboat and is commonly known as “the Member’s course” here at the Club. Harbourside consists of three nines that make up three distinctive eighteen hole options. All three nines vary in characteristics but all pose a great challenge when deciding which to play.

reward opportunities. More open and forgiving than the White Egret, this nine has water that plays into many shots. The Red Hawk measures 3,314 and this past season the entire nine was re-sodded with the ever popular Platinum Paspalum grass. This new playing surface gives you a great lie every time and makes the game a pleasure to play.

Harbourside opened for play in 1982. Many of the holes border the Sarasota Bay and our own Longboat Key Club Moorings which makes for a beautiful setting. The White Egret nine measures 3,342 yards and has the least amount of water of the three nines. Don’t let the lack of water on this nine fool you. Its difficulty is found in tight fairways which demands accuracy off the tee. Once you’ve positioned yourself correctly, big inviting greens give you plenty of target to aim at.

The final nine at Harbourside is our famous “Blue Heron” measuring 3,368 yards—our signature nine of all 45 holes here at Longboat Key Club. This nine was redesigned in 2005 and this year re-sodded with the new Platinum Paspalum grass as well. This nine boarders the Sarasota Bay with breathtaking views at every turn. It contains nine “signature” holes and challenges every part of your game. Tree-lined fairways and swirling winds put a premium on shot-making and course strategy. Courses designed by Ron Garl. Enjoy five sets of tees on all three nines.

The Red Hawk was recently redesigned by architect Ron Garl who challenges the golfer with many risk and

Custom Fitting AND HOW IT WILL IMPROVE YOUR GAME!

You’ve practiced your swing countless times, but you’re still not seeing the improvement you’re hoping for? It could be your swing, but it could also be your golf clubs. Luckily, there’s a straightforward fix for players looking to solve problems with their equipment’s performance so they can maximize their potential. Getting custom fit is a great idea for any golfer looking to improve their skills with their golf clubs that are built to help them play better. It helps you perform at your highest level when your equipment fits you correctly.

lub fitting is a great solution for golfers looking to discover inefficiencies in their game. This also helps remedy preventable flaws by using the golf clubs fit for them. Here are five ways custom club fitting with our Longboat Key Professionals can help golfers take their game to the next level.

C

Golfers who find themselves hitting off-center time and again should be mindful that their swing might not be the only issue. Instead, they could be using a club with the incorrect weight or shaft length for their particular strength, tempo, or swing mechanics. The fitting process at The Longboat Key Club uses the best technology in the business by using both Trackman and Flight Scope to give the player the best information 34

possible to dial in the exact shaft and club head to play your best. Our technology measures every aspect of the way a player delivers the club to the ball at impact. This approach contributes greatly to ensuring that whatever club head speed a player has, they are getting the most distance potential from it. A major upside of custom club fitting is that it can help golfers find equipment tailored to the way they tend to impact the ball, whether that be a tendency related to the angle of the clubface, the path of the club head or the location where the ball is being struck on the face of the club. If you find yourself continually missing the sweet spot, your club’s face angle may be to blame. Fitting a club with the correct face angle for your swing can help curtail any tendencies to slice or hook. Using a club face that better suits your swing can correct unintended errors on impact by better orienting you towards your target every time you hit. Furthermore, this creates a consistency that will result in better scores, which means more enjoyment of the game. Custom club fitting can also correct lie angle, ensuring that balls don’t veer from their intended path when hit. A lie angle oriented to match your strike ensures that the entire bottom of the club is flush with the ground on each swing, thus greatly assisting consistency and direction. A club that is delivered with the toe of the club lower than, or the heel of the club lower than the opposite side of the club, will result in shots that fly off target. Interestingly, most golfers play with clubs that are too flat, or too upright for their swing. Using custom fitted clubs on the course can immediately add distance to your shots. How? Trackman data or Flightscope data collects information on how a player drives a ball, including information on speed, strength, and angle, to inform the correct loft for a player’s needs. A custom club loft determined from studying how you tend to impact the ball can help you drive the ball with an optimized launch angle, yielding the best possible distance for your swing speed. If you’re looking to see an instant improvement in your game, custom fitting at the Club is a must for you! Give us a chance to improve your game which certainly will lead to more enjoyment and way more fun on the course!

he Swiss ball or “stability” ball as it’s commonly known, was originally designed for physical therapists to help patients with orthopedic problems. Today, the stability ball has evolved into other fields including fitness centers, doctor’s offices, hospitals, schools, sports facilities, and even in the work place.

T

The fitness center staff uses stability balls regularly with our clients and in our group classes. Anyone can use a ball, from beginner to professional athlete. The benefit of exercising with a ball is that one engages many more muscles, predominately the core muscles of the abdominals and lower back. Over time, these muscles strengthen and become more firm and steady. This results in better posture, less lower back pain, and a tighter tummy. Here is an example of a full-body workout that you can try next time you are at the gym. If you need help with your form or to modify these exercises for special needs, please ask for assistance from our personal trainers. We are here to help you HAVE A BALL!

TH E WO RKO UT All exercises are performed with a ball in any order: A. DUMBBELL CHEST PRESS B. WALL SQUAT C. LYING DUMBBELL PULLOVER D. ABDOMINAL CRUNCH E. HIP THRUSTS/GLUTE BRIDGE

UR O Y H T I W WORKOUTS! By John Richardson

BOSU Balance Trainer (or BOSU ball) is a fitness training device often used for balance training. The unstable surface that the BOSU provides requires the user to activate many more muscles than standing or sitting on a stable platform or on the ground. Strengthened core, ankle, knee and hip stability are just some of the benefits of working on a BOSU ball. The BOSU allows a great workout to a wide range of users, from the young, elderly, or injured to the elite athlete.

A

When the dome side faces up, the BOSU ball provides an unstable surface while the device remains stable. The BOSU can be used for many exercises, athletic drills and aerobic activities. It can be flipped over (as the name suggests) so that the platform faces up. In this position, the BOSU is highly unstable and can be used for other forms of exercise, such as pushups.

TH E WOR KO UT All exercises are performed with the BOSU ball in any order: A. STEP UPS B. SQUATS C. ARM CURLS D. LATERAL RAISES E. CRUNCHES

TENNIS SPECIALTY SHOTS FOR IMPORTANT POINTS By John Woods

B.

C.

et me start by saying all points are important points but there are times in a match that you will want to have something that your opponent will not be expecting because you have not used it often during the match.

L

I was at a tournament years ago and was walking by a practice court and saw Ken Rosewall with a bucket of balls lobbing them to the ad corner of the court. He would put the ball about three feet from the baseline and then repeat the drill to the center of the court and then the other corner until he could hit all three targets five times in a row. He then repeated this drill for drop shots and down the line forehands and backhands. I stayed until he was picking up balls and asked why he was practicing this way instead of hitting with one of his Aussie buddies. He simply asked if I would be watching his match that afternoon and of course I said yes. He then said after you see the match you will know why I do this. Sure enough, those three shots were spot on during his match. These are the three shots that you can practice on your own with a bucket of balls, or you can add to your practice session with your pro: A. LOB - Grab a bucket of balls and go behind the baseline. Take as many balls as you can in your non-hitting hand and practice by dropping the ball on the court and hitting lobs within four feet of the baseline in the deuce corner, the middle of the court and the ad corner. When you can get five in a row in each of these targets then you can move to the next.

B. DROP SHOT - Move about halfway between the service line and the net and drop a ball about knee to waist high and practice hitting your drop shot. Again take a three quarter backswing so your opponent will not read your shot, and carve under the ball like you're carving a melon. Do not use a lot of wrist or you will lose control of the shot. It is important that you give yourself plenty of room over the net. There is nothing worse than picking the right shot and then hitting the net. Remember this shot will have a surprise element so you don't need the shot to be perfect. C. DOWN THE LINE FOREHAND + BACKHAND - Again, take your bucket of balls and go where you normally stand behind the baseline in the deuce court and then in the ad court. Drop a ball and try to hit it in the middle of the alley about four feet in from the baseline. When you can do this five times in a row move to the next shot. It is important that you don't try to make these shots too close to the lines or the net. Remember this is going to be a surprise shot so your opponent will not be looking for it. There is no worse feeling than to hit a down the line or hit a lob only to see it sail out and seeing that your opponent was not expecting it at all. Make sure you use the shots sparingly so they will not be looking for them. Normally they will be used for important break points, or match point.

• Automated equipment for timed golf cart charging during off-peak electrical hours GOLF MAINTENANCE Organic turf and landscape management has the goal of using techniques that are results oriented and decrease impact on the environment. These techniques also provide sustainable and marketable conditions. We rely on products that consist of naturally occurring organic compounds that are derived from plant materials, biological organisms, or manufactured natural deposits. We also apply, record, and monitor according to the current requirements of Best Management Practices (BMP’s) as mandated by state, county, and local ordinances with regards to pest management and try to implement proper plant placement throughout the property. Specific approaches:

• All dry fertilizers used on golf courses

meet or exceed BMP requirements and primarily consist of Water Insoluble Nitrogen (WIN) derived from bone meals, fish meals, manures, and bio-solids fortified with humic and fulvic acids and sunflower hull ash to provide a slow release potassium source, also sometimes inoculated with mycorrhizae fungi beneficial for mining soil nutrients.

• Sprayed material consists of filtered

organic acids, purchased compost teas, purchased and brewed bacterial strains, and plant derived amino acids and other natural sugars. 54

• Plant nematodes are treated with timed

applications of Bacillus firmus based on degree days in Spring and Fall.

• Lake areas are treated for weed

development and algae blooms with only biodegradable dyes.

• All other pesticide and herbicide

treatments are limited to spot applications adhering to label requirements, threshold monitoring, and BMP mandates.

• Water use and management is recorded

daily and sampled monthly for total dissolved solids. Soils are sampled seasonally using both exchangeable and paste information. Tissue samples are taken weekly.

• Daily cleaning of maintenance vehicles

is performed with recycled water treated with special microbes to digest oils and other foreign solids. Grass clippings are separated, dried, composted and returned to the golf course as recycled nutrients

Saving Lives. Saving The Planet. Helping The Needy. Clean the World and its generous Hospitality Partners have launched a global hygiene revolution centered on a simple idea: recycling soap and saving lives. “According to the World Health Organization, a significant number of children under the age of 5 could be saved with access to bar soap and hygiene education.”

®

Clean the World is a social enterprise with the mission of saving millions of lives around the world. Clean the World leads a Global Hygiene Revolution to distribute recycled soap and hygiene products from more than 5,000+ hotel and resort partners to children and families in countries with a high death rate due to acute respiratory infection (pneumonia) and diarrheal diseases (cholera) – which are two of the top killers of children under 5. Since 2009, Clean the World has distributed more than 46 million bars of soap in 127 countries and the Resort at Longboat Key Club has been involved since 2010. 55 | RESORT EXPERIENCE MAGAZINE
