MOLECULAR INTERACTION

G E N E R AT I N G A S PA C E T H R O U G H M O L E C U L A R S U R FA C E P O T E N T I A L S The entanglement of a polymer chain is random and unpredictable yet when one traps that specific form the surface around it can be manipulated by chemical calculations. A 3D plotting software is used to build these growing polymeric chains. By performing various calculations a Van Der Waals surface potential is generated that servers as the network shell to demonstrate how this molecule might interact with other molecules when in contact. When we change the level of the potential interaction we can create different forms of the shell which can ultimately serve as a model of spatial relationships for people to inhabit.

EFFICIENCY

IMPROVING PRODUCTIVITY THROUGH I N D U S T R I A L FA B R I C AT I O N Solving multiple tasks at the same time can result in astounding productivity and efficiency. With an industrial mold it takes three individual steps to get a polymeric material ready for tensile testing. Liquid to powder, powder to thin film and then pressed by the stencil to produce a bar is a belabored process. Performing these steps individually requires 4 days to make the product. With this multiple mold design I can now perform six polymerizations simultaneously, combining all three steps. This produces six products in one day which makes this mold 24 times more efficient than the industrial mold.


INDUSTRIAL PURCHASE

MULTIPLE MOLD DESIGN For the middle two layers, Teflon was used so that the material will not stick to the mold and maintain its “dog bone� geometry. These layers were created using a water jet cutter at the School of Engineering. The outer two layers where made out of steel due to its strength, in order to minimize any movement during the reaction. The significant number of screws were required to make sure that the blocks held together as uniform as possible and to ensure no leaking occurs.

F L AT S H E E T T R A N S F O R M AT I O N There are myriad ways to cut and fold a single piece of paper to create objects. Here, a sheet of paper is systematically cut into strands, then folded over to createa compelling form and space. When making a 90° angle with cut plane, a building form emerges offer the potential to merge with the surrounding landscape. By changing one variable in the set of logical rules created for the building form, a new structure is created that can serves an arched walkway, shelter, building facade or structure.

FORM ASSEMBLE

FORM DYNAMICS FROM A THREE FORM CONSTRAINT Three simple forms were chosen and folded from a sheet of paper. These forms were then intersected and assembled in three different ways to create different form dynamics. This study represents a formal exploration given a set constraint, the base geometry or building blocks. The variable to this application of logic is the point of intersection. The results provide unique spatial conditions, forms and relationship to light.

LAYERS

C R E AT I N G D I F F E R E N T S PA C E S THROUGH ADDITION & SUBTRACTION Multiple foam core layers are stacked together in different orders and orientations to transform the structure into conceptually different spaces. Architecture is about form and structure but, it’s also about people and how people connect, move and interact withing the structure. This spatial study experiments with how the structure will feel as a space, by manipulating the arrangements and order of how these layers are stacked.

SCALE OF RELATIONSHIPS

P E R S P E C T I V E M A N I P U L AT I O N The same object can been seen in different ways based on its relative scale to the human body. In this formal exploration based upon the carving of layered material, one can discern either a modern building space or as an abstract furniture piece. The potential of scale can be pushed even further to suggest the study could be a neighborhood or even a city block. The size of a person in relation to the layers or tectonics, suggests the architectural value of the tectonic and therefore the whole.

FURNITURE When all these individual pieces are brought together it transforms into a three-dimensional perspective representation. By changing the scale of the human figures to the model, the interaction with its surroundings are moved towards a more realistic, movable, human scale - furniture.


BUILDING The same model is interacting on a complete different scale with its surroundings. The model now serves as an idea for a building structure to accommodate the human figure on a much larger scale.

DRAFTING

M E R G E R O F D R A F T I N G D R AW I N G S These are drafting drawing from an Engineering Graphic Design class I took in high school, all of the drawings had individual clear instructions. These raw drawings were taken either from homework assignments and or exams. These drawings were then stacked, overlapped and colored to create depth and spaces that interacts with the environment to produce a new conceptual form of depth and space.
