MAMIS KITCHEN

Nomfundo Andile Khumalo founded Mami’s Kitchen in 2018, a food service providing all your catering needs The Clermont-born cook has built a successful and growing business in Clermont, providing delicious meals like bunny chows and catering for events and functions

This is applaudable because coming from the township, she was more exposed to substances, drugs, alcohol abuse, teenage pregnancy and other social ills, but she managed to persevere and build a successful business A shining beacon of hope in her community

Growing up a cook

Nomfundo is the firstborn, so she was responsible for cooking at home “I loved cooking and baking because our granny was always on my side teaching me new things every day, we had a cookie jar for a 4pm tea time at home” she explains

Food was a part of the culture at home and that is where it all began, a growing passion for food Soon she was cooking the family Christmas lunch for everyone at home, we all know only the best cooks are allowed to cook at Christmas

Although she ventured into other industries in sales and other jobs, she knew that cooking is the ultimate happy place for her So she left everything and built Mamis kitchen in 2018, which began as a container to the success it is now.

“I called up my friends in the business to start a Social Cohesion platform that was called the Gathering It began at home with local brands being sold in my yard, cocktails, food, music and mamis kitchen used to specialise on the famous bunny chow” says Mami The kitchen has caught the eye of many influential people and celebrities

Advice for new cooks

It is okay to start small and to start wherever you are. Treat your business like a baby and be ready for challenges. Covid19 opened my eyes to realising that life can change in a minute, so be ready for anything that can come your way face it at face value

Lessons

Never make do work without any written contracts

As many others, she learned the hard way that one should not work without a contract or agreement “I did an event with no budget I arranged artists and prepared food with a zero budget” Unfortunately that event did not yield the desired outcomes and financial gain.

Safety in the township

As a business located in the township There is a high crime rate and safety is not guaranteed This means that businesses have to close early in order to not be victims.

What can we look forward to?

To keep a sustainable and growing business

She hopes to one day have a tourist attraction restaurant in Durban.

Nomfundo is also busy with other ventures:

-Project Co-ordinator Clermont Arts and Flea Market (CAFM ), the Mission and Vision for (CAFM) is to revive the Township economy, and to help our SMME’s to know each other and support each other inside our Townships.

With a strong background as a property practitioner and manager for many property companies she had a good foundation to venture out on her own She runs one CEDE Property Agency Glenwood, a fresh, vibrant, energetic and progressive real estate entity With a natural love for people and an interest in the industry, she fell in love with the estate agent industry as she loves solving people’s property needs since 2014. Her success is because over the years she prioritises maintaining integrity, honesty and fairness in my business dealings; “I am a believer and very grounded in faith and spiritually. That sets the tone for my life and my foundation in everything I do” she affirms

Building my own empire…

In 2022 she was set to the franchise and run her own branch. It has been a rocky ride for the KwaMashu born property guru It is operating a small business, however her 5year goal includes expansion and doubling her staff component which is currently at 6 The future is definitely bright with more partnerships, collaborations and ventures

Estate agency is believed to be motivated by money I am motivated by the quality of my service. When I am here to stay in the industry I want to know I have earned my money and the value I give I must be paid for it as well.

Thabile Bock is a brand on its own and someday I will trade under that name. This is something I want to leave behind for my future generation CEDE property agents is a franchise and that does come with some marketing advantages. They use social media and register on various property websites.

We are open to doing business, we follow the industry norms and standards We do not take a half commission as that will reduce the value of our business, we want to grow in property and partner with people with the same vision.

She has just been given a slot in community radio to bring more advice and education on the property business.

Family Ties Milestones

Bock is a mother of three girls and one boy and wife to Pastor Henry Bock who has always been a pillar of strength and support on all her ventures. Her twin brother, Thamsanqa Vilakazi is someone she looks up to. He is a qualified Architect with more than 15 years of experience. He has never had it easy but he fought his way to the top of his world, I love his energy. Her mom is also a source of inspiration she never gives up and has always worked hard.

A significant milestone was selling her first commercial building worth R10 million. It was an affirming sale as the client called Bock distraught for Bock to solve her property issues. “I worked till late and came across the building that was for sale in a week. I negotiated the selling price and in no time a sale agreement was drawn up” she says confidently

In the future, she needs deals of this nature and bigger ones Currently, she is looking for a buyer for 100 000 sqm of land for sale in Simbithi at a cost of R55 million

The greatest milestone is people coming back with gratitude and testimonies, especially tenants, landlords, buyers and sellers. Their appreciation of the CEDE property service is encouraging

She is inspired by her kids in different ways. “I take from each of their characters something new or something big”, she says, “they remind me that I should be the best of myself”.

Advice:

With every deal she does, she offers not only a property but an experience as well. I want the encounter to have meaning and it's really not difficult. just do the best job and the rest will fall in place for your benefit in the future.

It is important to follow one’s natural instincts. This will assist in knowing what you are meant to do

Do what you love, and money will come. Finish what you started and do not give up too soon.

Enjoy the fruits of your work but not for too long as tomorrow is another day of work.

Time is the same for everyone It depends on what you do with it, if you can do more within that same time you have a greater advantage.

Each of us can achieve because we fear failure, something not familiar, and even resilience. Sometimes we have to stay the course and finish the race for each level of our lives. We give up too soon.

Hurdles

One of the limitations is that usually, people will give mandates to well-known brands so as a small business it's really hard to secure good mandates, the ones one gets are usually the ones that have been in the market for a long and usually they are highly-priced. We use the same method as the bigger brands however the shortcoming is the big brands have a bigger platform as they spend a lot on marketing and advertising.

Whereas as a small business, there is a lack of funds which limits and delays us from doing more at a particular time.

What is the future?

The future of my business is to grow my business in this industry To do new things and manage bigger buildings. She aims to venture into other areas of the industry as well Soon she plans to ‘flip houses’, to buy, renovate buildings and sell at a profit This will need great investments at a funding level, for mutual gain.

To also partner with developers in finding places for them to buy and build for profit. I want to have a tv show in the property industry Working with her daughter, in the beginning, phase of a construction business which works hand in hand with the estate industry.

PIMPDLOZI, A SANGOMA WITH ALL OF THE TRIMMINGS.

In our modern Sangoma era with the likes of Thandukuthula Khambule, affectionately known as ‘Pimpdlozi’ Makhosi Khambule is not your ordinary sangoma, the PMB-born sangoma is changing the narrative of African spirituality and also bringing much-needed answers to society on the topic of African spirituality.

With a technical background of civil engineering and technical training, how did we get the now flamboyant Pimpdlozi?

Becoming PimpDlozi

The gift of ubungoma started showing itself from a young age Coming from a ‘born-again Christian background with well-grounded and traditional family. The prophetic gift unveiled itself as a youth minister at church It would continue to become more prevalent over time as he grew up into adulthood, where he experienced vivid dreams and visions It was not an easy calling to accept

The calling to be isangoma was clear and he went into initiation school in 2015 In the beginning it was hard to accept and he was in denial, rejecting anything to do with ancestors. Once he experienced for himself and find his truth, “I found that I have more in me than what I thought myself capable of. I had to let go and give in fully” he confesses. As a sangoma, he faced many challenges but today he says, “Ubungoma made me who I am today and I will forever be grateful. I have a very interesting and vibrant lifestyle that is very different from an average or ‘normal’ traditional healer”

Killing the stereotypes

In 2016 Post his initiation of becoming a traditional healer, he chose to live the life of his dreamsIn many instances, being a healer is often associated with being old, and this is simply not true. Regardless of age, being a healer is a gift that people are born with Life as a healer can be chaotic, but satisfaction comes from knowing that you have helped someone

Ubungoma has been framed as an unclean profession with old people who are dirty or evil Pimpdlozi is determined to kill that stereotype. As a true fashionista who enjoys the finer things in life and elite fragrances, he always smells divine Indeed, he refuses to conform and we love to see it.

Wins along the way

Media Coverage

I’ve made headlines in different media platforms (NEWSPAPERS, RADIO Interviews, SABC 1 Intrapreneurs (featured) through hosting upmarket events and creating awareness. I have received awards of recognition and appreciation from different organisations all over South Africa.

Vuma FM contributor

Being a Radio Contributor on Vuma FM from 2019-2023 was my biggest achievement in life because ever since I became a sangoma I’ve always wanted to educate and enlighten the youth about African Spirituality and Healing (UMSAMO).

Though he practices his traditional healing business, he is also a versatile entrepreneur with a variety of service offerings under his brand

‘Pimpdlozi Khambule PTY (LTD)’ he does:

graphic designing, events planning & management, brand ambassador for established brands and companies, catering services, RedPaste by Pimpdlozi (a homemade chilli paste that is very popular ekasi) Khambule Properties where I invest in residential property by leasing them out to the public.

Lessons along the way

Prejudice

As a born-again Christian turned Sangoma, Makhosi Khambule faced many prejudices “I was judged for my choices by my community. I have been called a witch by the community and family members I have been challenged by my colleagues, who believe I am fake”. This has not been an easy calling. However, that doesn’t stop our fave Makhosi from being the kind-hearted person and healer he was called for.

Healing People

My everyday life as a healer is emotionally draining, because of existing in between two worlds, but I still manage to juggle my “normal” life too. I am able to control the spiritual world, as well as my natural life I can determine when it is time to work, but I also have time to myself. I am disciplined and able to control myself,

Building the PimpDlozi Brand – a mixed bag of clients

Advice for the up and coming

Know your story, never try to be someone else, have a vision and be goal oriented. This journey is not easy at all; Its survival of the fittest You will be called names and that shouldn’t distract you from achieving your goals.

The clients of Makhosi Khambule are truly a mixed bag, however, people need spiritual guidance, healing and direction in their lives, businesses and relationships. “I deal with different kinds of people, from businesspeople and executives to ordinary people, especially those from outside my town who are my biggest clients,” he says. The clientele ranges from ‘white’ clients to ‘premium’ clients –there are five levels of clients, with the premium being the highest. “I work with all races, ages and genders Dealing with clients remains the same on many levels when compared to the past What differs in modern times are the communication options we have and I am also working on modernised techniques that will change the way we do consultations.

What is next for Makhosi Khambule?

He aims to increase his reach and win more souls through radio and tv (UMSAMO). His other business interests will also expand and grow, a lot of things in the pipeline.

As a qualified social worker, having worked intheNGOsectorfor15yearsandasaparttimeacademic,supervisingfieldpracticeof social work students for over eight years, I was concerned with the multiple structural and organizational challenges social workersexperiencedbeyondtheircontrol

Additionally, the findings of my Master’s research with institutional social workers confirmed that the lack of resources, high staff turnover, and the recruitment of foster families emerged as key factors that contributed to the challenges experienced by both institutio workers in the servicestochild

I am concerned that fourteen years later, the same challenges persist among social workers within the CW sector. This has been my primary motive for conducting my PhD study.

This study contributes to the growing yet limited research on the structural challenges emanating from neoliberal and new managerial policies in social work practice within the child welfare sector No such study has been conducted in the KZN province of South Africa, particularly within the field of Child Welfare as perceived by ocial work

Hence this study calls for collaborative governance for BOM of CW organisations to meet in a common space to facilitate development and growth, thereby empowering each other and promoting the CW agenda nationally.
