Rylee Johnson Interior Design

I graduated Magna Cum Laude from Iowa State University in May of 2023. I earned my BFA in Interior Design with a minor in business. In the interior design program, I have taken classes in SketchUp, AutoCAD, and Revit. Over the semesters, I have learned the design process from research to modeling.
I can develop comprehensive design plans for new stores and remodels, ensuring alignment with brand objectives and design standards within tight timelines, while coordinating with internal and external teams, and vendors to ensure timely project completion. Additionally, I collaborate with other designers to contribute innovative ideas in team meetings and stay up to date on industry trends to continually enhance store design processes.

Spring 2023-
Project Description: Students were asked to design a hotel, a mobile learning unit, and an additional component. Our firm, Bel Avni, chose a planetarium as our additional component, each component focused on educating the public further on our solar system. A term that we used consistently was- InHuman Scale, which was to bring the solar system to an understandable and digestible level. Bel Avni was composed of graphic designers, interior designers, a UX/UI designer, and an architect. With this being our final semester of class our professor's made it as real as possible. They did this by having us respond to an RFI, RFQ, RFP, and a design proposal.
Concept Statement: We will bring NASA down to Earth for the general public by focusing on our present-day and nearest neighbors. By exploring how recent science has shaped our understanding of our solar system, we will connect the public to the value of NASA’s mission and inspire their wonder.
Our Goals and Objectives
Create a backdrop for the visitor center experience.
Create a front door to NASA as a whole.
Bring NASA’s vast knowledge, into the palm of your hand.
Connect to the everyday stories of science to the wonders it reveals.
Ignite imagination.
Fall 2022-
Project Description: Students were asked to design a CCRC for a certain population. My group (3 students) chose intergenerational living, which focuses on bringing all generations together. Our design is focused on all users: the residents, staff, and families.
Concept Statement: The Parkwood Retirement Community, located in Des Moines, Iowa, will showcase a design that celebrates tranquility, diversity, and sustainability. The design will highlight the importance of being an inclusive, thriving, and engaging environment for all users. The space will empower the health, safety, and wellbeing of all residents, staff, and guests. The design will integrate opportunities for modern technology, healthcare flexibility, and innovative designs for accessibility to create a timeless design for users to enjoy for many generations.

FALL 2022-
Project Description: Students were tasked to design tiny homes (~1000 sf) for young adults with Autism. This project is in junction with Cultivating Hope Farm in Ames, Iowa- which teaches those with Autism a multitude of skills. Students worked in groups to design a classroom space, 2 floor plans, and a (tiny home-style) country store.
Learning Goals: During this project, we learned how to design a home for someone with Autism. After much research and talking with researchers, I learned that each person with Autism is so different that the house needs to be detailed to their needs. The plans may have to be modified for each user.
Concept Statement: Cultivating Independence is located on the Cultivating Hope Farms in Ames, Iowa, and will showcase a design that celebrates independence, growth, and the uniqueness of each individual. The design will highlight the importance of being an inclusive space for those with autism and their families. The design will be engaging, safe, and empowering for all users. The space will be designed for the residents, families, and therapists. The design will integrate opportunities for spaces of refuge, modern technology, sustainable energy, and customizable options to create a community within Cultivating Hope Farms.
FALL 2021-
Project Description: Students were tasked to design a new Shop in Shop for an international high-end fashion brand. The shop will be on the fifth floor inside the new “La Rinascente” department store in Rome.
Learning Goals: During this project, we learned how to design for a highend brand while creating a new concept for the brand. This project was done while studying abroad in Rome, Italy. Project Introduction: On a team of two designing a store for Valentino, we started by researching and analyzing the fashion brand. We then worked on a theoretically-based concept, developing a detailed project.
Concept Statement: The design team created a space representing Valentino through its clean style and luxury materials. The team will do this by using the current store concept and putting their touch on it. The team will use color and textures to draw the viewer’s eye to different elements of the shop-in-shop. Each of the mood boards will be incorporated through color and texture.

ABOUT MY INTERNSHIP: I interned at ISG in the summer of 2022- I had the chance to work on three projects (which were over-seen); during these projects, I was able to do many things, including; site visits, client meetings, finish plans, elevations, material selection, contacting reps. The following projects I got to work on included work for a city, an office space, and a multi-use apartment building. I also helped the other designers with miscellaneous projects, which normally included placing casework andgettingsamplesofmaterials.
I appreciated working with interior designers and other disciplines during my internship. I learned how to work hard, be productive, and love what I do simultaneously.
