DOING WELL THROUGH DOING GOOD

At Rydon, our aim is to improve local communities, through Housing, Healthcare and Education solutions, for the benefit of current and future generations. We build and maintain homes, schools and hospitals as well as Extra Care facilities, student accommodation, leisure centres and more. And by doing so, we are delivering award winning, quality facilities built by local people for local people. Our approach to sustainability stems from our core values of honesty, respectfulness, and teamwork which underpin everything we do. We are committed to leaving a positive legacy which means minimising our impact on the environment and bringing new opportunities for local communities. Our 2017 CSR Report focuses on the key sustainability challenges facing the company, progress on addressing these and details on our objectives and aspirations for the future along with new initiatives to further improve what we do.

Sustainable development provides a framework to safeguard the future wellbeing of our business, communities, and our planet, ensuring a better quality of life for everyone, now and for generations to come through: •

Social progress which recognises the needs of everyone

Maintenance of high and stable economic growth and employment

Protecting and where possible enhancing the environment, using natural resources prudently and responsibly.

ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT

Each year we take steps to reduce our effect on the environment and make a positive difference to people and communities. As a people business, it’s our employees that are at the forefront of bringing our sustainability strategy to life. Everyone at Rydon is working hard to innovate through the Considerate Constructors Scheme, divert even more waste from landfill or deliver programmes that bring lifelong careers in our industry. These are just some of the examples in this report. I’m proud of what we have achieved together and we’ll target an even bigger commitment in 2018. This will ensure we continue to produce award-winning work that has a valuable impact on society.

OUR APPROACH TO SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT

We recognise that sustainability goes far beyond simple legislative compliance and preventing pollution. We believe that sustainable practices should be embedded in core business practices as they are a fundamental corporate responsibility:

At Rydon we focus on 3 key areas of sustainability in line with our core values: 1. Our Impact on the Environment

Our Mission Statement

2. People & Communities 3. Corporate Governance & Reporting

Rydon delivers solutions for housing, healthcare and education to address social challenges and advance society.

2.2

OUR IM PACT O N T H E ENV IRO NM EN T

Rydon Group strives to make a positive contribution to the world we live and work in. We continually focus on the reduction of waste, energy, and carbon emissions through our operations relating to buildings, transport and industrial processes.

Rydon aims to reduce environmental impact, to protect the environment and improve environmental performance. Good environmental management can reduce the risk of regulatory fines and often identify opportunities to save money.

With the update to the new Environmental Management System accreditation ISO 14001:2015, key changes include a focus on risk management and life cycle perspective. These ensures that organisations will need to take steps to consider risks, evaluate operations and scrutinise the sustainability of supply chains. This means that we must ensure products and services selected are responsibly sourced nd have minimal impact.

PEOPLE & COMMUNITIES

Social sustainability involves identifying and managing business impact on people. The quality of Rydon’s relationships and engagement with its stakeholders is critical to a sustainable business. Directly or indirectly, Rydon affects employees, contractors in the supply chain, customers and local communities, and it is important to Rydon to manage these impacts n a positive way.

Where possible source locally produced materials, and promote, develop and expand our apprenticeship, work experience, training and employment opportunities for people in and around the communities within which we work, to bring income into these communities.

Rydon Group has focused its social sustainability agenda on foundations we believe to be crucial to the sustainability of our industry, including training and upskilling our workforce, reducing unemployment rates, community and stakeholder engagement, and being considerate constructors.

We Strive to: Involve, consult, communicate and actively engage with the local communities and stakeholders from immediate and neighbouring areas within which we are working, from an early stage in the development process to ensure minimal disruption to residents and neighbours during our developments.

Maintain our long-standing support of The Prince’s Trust and run ‘Get Into Construction’ programmes, providing a comprehensive and supportive introduction to the industry for disadvantaged young people.

Maintain and expand our existing relationships with schools and colleges, ensuring we engage with stakeholders and students to provide exposure to the industry and the potential careers in all aspects of the built environment.

Continue and improve our volunteering scheme via our staff forum, which coordinates a wide range of activities in support of selected charities through a formal charity volunteering system and the Rydon Charitable Trust.

Register every project with the Considerate Constructors Scheme, and set internal targets to achieve above industry average scores.

As a highly regulated industry, we are required to comply with to a number of independent third party performance assessments. Most of these are closely related to the core areas of responsibility referenced in this report, and enable us to benchmark and measure our performance in key areas. The Code for Sustainable Homes, BREEAM assessments, the Energy Savings Opportunity Scheme (ESOS) and setting company wide KPIs are performance measurements that when combined are a way for us to demonstrate our commitment and deliver sustainable projects.

the new standard which has been revised to ensure that environmental management is integrated and aligned with business strategies. Key changes to the standard ensure a stronger focus on risk management life cycle as well as communication and awareness to ensure the whole business will be motivated towards sustainability goals and objectives. Sustainability objectives and targets are set and monitored by our Safety and Sustainability forum, which meets quarterly to review progress, and drives the strategic CSR plan for Rydon.

Central to reporting and continual improvement are the standards to which we comply via the British Standards Institution. Last year saw the update and transition of our Environmental Management System to ISO 14001:2015,

Charities £2009.25 was raised for the British

Heart Foundation this year through the London to Brighton Bike Ride. This year’s team, made up of 15 staff, has helped provide the charity with essential funds to deliver research and equipment used to investigate, diagnose and treat heart disease.

The MacMillan Cancer ‘World’s Biggest Coffee Morning’ was held at Rydon’s Head Office in Forest Row, as well as it’s Dartford and Canning Town locations. Together we raised nearly £1,000 to support the charity’s work and help their mission to ensure that cancer should never be fought alone.

Our Buckmore Park karting challenge calls upon the best driving talent the construction industry has to offer and has raised over £66,000 for good causes since it started 25 years ago. For several years Rydon has been donating all funds raised to the construction industry’s charity CRASH, which specialises in assisting homeless and hospice charities with construction related projects, and this year handed over a cheque for £3,600.

Rydon South West’s annual golf day was held in support of the Great Western Air Ambulance (GWAA) raising a fantastic

£780.

Craig Plowman, Site Supervisor for Rydon, volunteered to take part in the BBC’s DIY SOS: The Big Build in March. Craig joined over 200 local tradespeople and DIY SOS team regulars in Bristol to change a young man’s life, enabling him to move back in with his family after transforming their home to accommodate specially adapted access and facilities for his needs.

FOOD BANKS With 1 in 5 people in the UK living below the poverty line, food banks provide a lifeline for people in crisis. Staff from Rydon’s HQ in Forest Row collected food and toiletries to donate to the local food bank in East Grinstead ahead of Christmas.

Rydon’s Cyclical Decoration team in Islington has also contributed cash to purchase items to donate to their local food bank. Based in the Highbury Roundhouse Youth and Community Centre, Islington’s food bank opened in 2011 and provides around 2500 three-day emergency food parcels to individuals and families each year.

Community Gardens Working together with its supply chain and local educational groups, Rydon’s Moreton Close site team at a supported living development have kick- started a project across the road to create the new Mill Hill East Community Garden. The garden is being established in unused space at Mill Hill East Church and will provide a vibrant new space for all the community to enjoy.

“Our vision is for a space that everyone in the community can help to shape and create, with space to grow food, cook, eat and share life and community together. Rydon and their teams have helped bring this vision a big step closer to reality and we are grateful for their support.” Joshua Kane Pastor of Mill Hill East Church

“Since working on the supported living project, we wanted to support this popular local community hub in a practical way. Their community garden project is a great idea and we are pleased to help them make better use of their grounds and leave a positive and lasting legacy for everyone locally.” Rydon Construction Contracts Manager

The project has also given local young people opportunities to improve the look of their local community whilst trying their hand at trade skills including bricklaying. The first phase of the garden involved vegetation removal, the demolition and replacement of a boundary wall as well as planting a new hedge, the team are now planning the next phase of works for the New Year.

KEY CHANGES

Global stressors – from water scarcity to modern-day slavery – are forcing companies to fundamentally rethink and reinvent business models and practices to support a more secure, sustainable future. By adapting the way in which we design, source and build, we can conserve natural resources more efficiently; generate more valuable social and economic opportunities for people, businesses and societies; and deliver greater cost benefits for our customers.

RY D O N G RO U P Sustainability report

In the next year Rydon will be looking at these key areas: Improved Energy and Carbon Reporting We are now entering the compliance phase for stage 2 of The Energy Savings Opportunity Scheme (ESOS) with which Rydon needs to comply. Going forward we will be looking into improving our energy and carbon reporting to ensure we capture our full carbon footprint and address strategies to reduce our emissions.

Water Reporting Good management of water resources can provide opportunities to build relationships with local communities, demonstrate leadership, improve or maintain brand reputation, and reduce costs. By understanding our use of water we will be able to consider effective efficiency measures leading to direct cost savings.

Supply Chain Supply Chain Engagement is key to promoting sustainability in the delivery of materials and services. A majority of carbon emissions for a project come from embodied carbon in the supply chain, and the construction industry is increasingly focussing on reporting emissions for the life cycle of a project. Therefore we will be working with our supply chain to understand the carbon impacts of goods and services we are procuring.
