DESIGN INTENT
Over the course of my education, I have grown as a designer as well as a person. The confidence in my designs and self is shown in my projects, as they begin to reflect me as a person. Comfort and warmth are design qualities that I strive for. A healthy environment full of color and life invokes happiness and creativity on the people who inhabit it. Good energy promotes good actions, good actions promote togetherness, and togetherness promotes comfort and communication. A well balanced environment means a well balanced life.

Within urban environments there is an extreme lack of accessible spaces for engagement and user-friendly building elements. The project investigates a way in which individuals are able to interact within a site’s context, as well as public and private programs. It attempts to redefine the design of buildings within the urban environment, and transform the way one defines their experience. Utilizing the linearity of the site, the multi-angular form was generated and allowed a maximized span and surface area. The form reveals two defined site spaces that act as parking and green space for public engagement. The main urban edge remains unbroken while creating a defined voided entry for the library. The design relates to the neighborhood of Pilsen, as well as the iconic Chicago architecture that the city was built on. The materiality of the building begins to objectify the building as the brick and terracotta create an illusion. The two materials are similar in form and color forming an uncanny nature to the envelope of the building. The dissimilarity between the materials forces viewers to engage closer with the monolithic building to see the material distinction.

OBSTRUCTION OF POWER
Fall 2020
Professor Jennifer Meakins
Structural
Power Study
Columbus, Ohio
Architecture is not neutral. It is used as an agent of power that can affect the way people feel and act. Each element of architecture, the wall, door, window, roof, ceiling, etc. plays a role in instances of injustice, inequality, and suppression. The ceiling is a cap to a space with the ability to persuade and constrict the feel and function of it. Recreating the ceiling of powerful structures, for instance statehouses, changes the atmosphere. How might we change the way one feels in spaces with significant power structures through the adaptation of this element? Research began with studying government buildings around the world and how the ceilings define the program beneath them. The form of a ceiling then is used to create spaces of a variety of scales for users to walk, sit, and relax.

People experience the world through mediated screens daily from their smartphones and cameras. Though useful, these artificial devices are capable of augmenting one’s reality with the lenses and view ports they operate through. When lenses are carefully crafted, they can be utilized as architectural tools that rethink the structure of the domestic space and offer a glimpse into the routines of its characters from the inside out. The project design consists of multiple manipulated program ‘bubbles’ connected by an interior green corridor that mimics the ecology of the site. The section model constructed is a physical manifestation of a vivarium or geode. The exterior is a curvilinear and soft shape that when broken apart, revealing spaces that begin to come alive with various color, texture, and vegetative details applied. Where the corridor meets the fully transparent exterior glass is a moment where interior and exterior are blurred. Fabrication included experimenting with glass, resin, acrylic, and other materials to understand how they can operate as lenses that obscure one’s view from the inside out. By doing so, lenses are not limited to their inherent use as a single view port but can now serve as a crafted piece of furniture that can be occupied within a space.

K-12 Master Plan

West Loop, Chicago, Illinois
Inspired by the structure of a Montessori education system, the systematic approach of this project notice the children not as students but rather as individuals. The City Within a City school consists of campus-like planning that can be related to the blocks of the city. Mimicking a city, the school integrated diversity, green space, integration, sunlight, and circulation into the master plan of this design. City Within a City is located in West Loop, Chicago. The materiality implemented into the design is inspired by iconic Chicago architecture. Steel is inspired by the John Hancock Building, terracotta i s inspired by The Rookery, and concrete inspired by the Chicago Cultural Center. Creating personal alcoves provides students opportunities to find their own personal spaces to feel comfortable and isolated in. The K-5 as well as the entire city blocks implements moments for children to gather or create their own individual space.

A place of arrival and departure can be symbolic and leave an imprint on the people experiencing it. The Cracked Vessel aims to create a grand memory to those using the space. The process began with experimental form finding through the use of a single sheet of card stock. With focus on an extension of the landscape as well as sharp edges to mimic those of a ships bow, the form begins to ‘peel’ up from the landscape creating space for program and void for user-defined green space. Large open spaces, natural light, and materiality each play an atmospheric role in the design. A large central skylight highlights the main staircase. The use of wood causes the environment to be warm and inviting, however the placement of concrete in areas of circulation causes users to continue to circulate because of its cold feeling. Cracked Vessel includes programs of retail and commercial attracting travelers as well as locals.

The design of a working atmosphere can affect the mentality of the people working in a space. To keep a positive and productive working environment, the focus of this project is on creating an uplifting space for people to work & gather. Materiality, light, and programming are used to create a comfortable atmosphere meant to better the minds of the people occupying the space. Inspired by the geometry of honeycomb, Studio Apiary’s facade consists of hexagons that begin to penetrate the interior, creating moments for student use. The main stair wraps around the exterior of the studio spaces. Each level of the staircase consists of pin-up space for additional use. The central atrium acts as a year round green space providing the students with natural light as well as greenery. A wrap around track on the third floor acts as a connection between the studio spaces and the fitness & yoga program. Physical activity, natural light, and natural greenery improve cognitive function for the students.
