Welcome to Ryburn’s magazine! The focus of this issue is character and careers – the people you will become through your time at Ryburn. Look out for all the different professions featured, from a poet to an acrobat, a Police Community Support Officer to one of the world’s top professional footballers. There’s also plenty of character building student exploits to read about, including Beauty and the Beast, tackling the Three Peaks Challenge and an exclusive look inside our new Nurture Centre. Ryburn is a school with its values at its heart and students who learn so much more than what’s tested in exams. And now we’ve got a badge to prove it.

through lots of paperwork and plans, and, most importantly, talked to a panel of students. They were so impressed with what they saw that they decided to award our school with the ‘Character Education Kitemark Plus’, only the third award they’d ever given at the higher level. #proudface

In the autumn term, we invited in assessors from the Association of Character Education to look at how effective we are in our vision to develop our students’ values and qualities. Schools play a part in developing you as people, and we want to help you to become wellrounded people who will flourish as individuals in the future, but also contribute towards a better world and society. No biggie.

They found our staff to be really passionate about developing students’ character and personal self confidence, with the strategies in place to do so. They were also particularly impressed with how students could link character traits and actions with success in the classroom and beyond, and how you develop resilience to cope with life’s ups and downs.

EIGHT WAYS TO DEVELOP YOUR CHARACTER AT RYBURN TRY SOMETHING NEW Throw yourself into new experiences in your lessons, in iD, and in extra curricular activities, and you never know what you might learn. Maybe you’ll find a new favourite hobby. Or maybe it won’t work out so well but will be a huge learning opportunity.

DON’T DOZE OFF IN IGEN Stepping into someone else’s shoes through reading a novel is one of the best ways to understand the world and develop empathy. It’s a safe space to debate and think through what you’d do in different situations, so you’ll be ready when life throws you a curve ball.

LEARN FROM EVERYTHING Treat everything you do (and everyone you meet) as a chance to learn. Life’s only as interesting as you choose to make it. Ask all the questions, and reflect and learn from good experiences and bad.

PRACTICE A GROWTH MINDSET Make a habit of thinking all those ‘growth mindset’ phrases and thoughts, and they will stick. “I can’t do this ..... YET.” “I can do hard things.” “Mistakes help me grow.”

TAKE THE LONG VIEW It takes time and hard work to achieve anything worthwhile, and that’s never truer than in developing habits and traits. Keep focussed on your long term goal to help you through the ups and downs on your journey to reach it.

TRY RADICAL KINDNESS Sometimes being kind is easy– throwing £1 in a charity bucket.

Sometimes it’s hard, and that has power. Call out someone for being unkind. Include the person who is always left out. Show up in the rain to support your friend’s team,

again and again. Build someone up when they’re feeling down, and notice when they are. Kindness is contagious.

LOOK AFTER YOUR WELLBEING You deserve kindness too, and that starts with you. Look after yourself with the dull things like enough sleep and good food. And be kind and forgiving to yourself too. Find time to be creative andto be active.

Avoid the people that drag you down, unfollow toxic social media feeds that make you feel you’re not worthy. Admit if you’re not ok, and find someone to support you. The pastoral team are here for you.

BE A LEADER AND A TEAM PLAYER Leadership and collaboration are two of the most important skills needed in society. Find opportunities to develop these in group work, or join Student Council or the Ambassadors team.

WHAT DO OUR OTHER BADGES MEAN? Why exactly do we go through the effort of earning these badges anyway? Well, it’s to make sure that we really are having an impact on the things which matter to us, and not just sitting back and saying that we do. It’s to recognise and celebrate the hard work that our staff, students and community put in. And above all, to push and challenge ourselves to keep on striving to excel.

We achieved the national quality standard for excellence in careers education, information, advice and guidance in July 2019. We had to meet the ‘Gatsby Benchmarks’, eight different measures, including ensuring we meet students’ needs, link the curriculum to careers and provide you with experiences of employers and workplaces.

We achieved our second Artsmark Award at the highest Platinum level in October in recognition of our ongoing commitment to the Arts and cultural education. The Arts Council commended our creative curriculum approach and how creativity is now embedded within our culture, helping to develop students’ personal qualities, confidence and resilience.

Some really interesting people walk through the door of our school who do all kinds of different things for a living. We wanted to capture some of their experience and wisdom, and their insights into a range of different careers you might want to pursue. Our ever-expanding ‘Ryburn Careers Role Models’ video series explores firsthand experiences of different careers, with plenty of tips and ideas to inspire you for the future.

Here’s a few highlights. Check out the full interviews and many more on Ryburn’s Youtube channel.

“Surround yourself with the right people, and go for every opportunity that comes your way. A lot of people say, ‘I don’t want to do that, cos I’m scared, or I’m going to look stupid”, but it doesn’t matter.

THREE PEAKS In July, our intrepid Languages Leaders and staff set out on a charity fundraising mission more challenging than any they’d yet faced. To climb the legendary and magnificent Three Peaks. A journey of some 28 miles, mostly uphill. Lewis Murphy describes the trials, tribulations and glory of an unforgettable journey.

CHALLENGE Yorkshire’s Three Peaks. A magnificent landscape combining the best of all the elements, forming beautiful mountains and hills, scintillating lakes and lush green fields. For miles around there are no built up areas to be seen, providing an uninterrupted panorama of Yorkshire at its best.

At 6:45am we stood in Horton in Ribblesdale, on a street corner by a pub. All three peaks were clearly visible, though clearly quite a distance away. 16 of us, armed with huge backpacks and a strong wills, stared in awe at what seemed to be an unforgettable trip ahead of us. And it would be unforgettable…

We set off for the first peak at exactly 7:30am, along one of the last paved roads we would see for

quite a while. We began our climb, and instantly realised – this would not be easy.

The path to the first peak cut through multiple fields, each at a generous slope, with a few small climbing sections before reaching the main part of the peaks path.

Going through a gate at the end of the last field, you’re met with a daunting sight - the almost sheer climb up jagged outcrops of cold, hard rock. With a large backpack, you’re lifting almost double your weight at every step, but eventually the peak is in sight.

You might look back to see others grasping at the ground to keep steady, but everyone in our group made it up safely.

At the top, we were engulfed in cloud, having reached high into

the sky. Through the mist, we saw the first peak marker, a large cuboid rock, which marked the summit of Pen-y-Ghent.

look back and see Pen-y-Ghent, diminished in the distance, and sigh in relief knowing we were getting through it.

We stopped at the top for a short time, and found ourselves gazing across the immense valley between each peak. The second, and furthest peak was barely visible from where we were, and so we all knew what was about to come.

At the second peak, we stopped again to look over what we’d done and what we had to do. In the valley between the second and third peaks was a small set of cafes and shops, which clearly had the right idea to set up a rest station there.

After that short respite, we began walking again, now blessed with downhill and mostly flat terrain, the sun rising high and strong above us. Before reaching a designated stop and the final stretch to the second peak, we passed cows, people, and a lot of grass, all the while making great conversation and having fun listening to each other’s stories. At the stop we drank, ate, and laid in the grass to make as much use of the time as possible.

In the building heat, we continued down, stopped, ate, and moved on. The final stretch was finally appearing.

Whernside, the second peak, was much more challenging than the first, as we were already tired from the completed distance.

As we approached, we could

By this point, the group tackling a shorter distance had finished, and we remaining walkers were quickly losing energy, but not resolve. We tackled the gently sloping terrain to reach the toughest part of a brilliant journey – the rock climb up Ingleborough.

With collapsing legs and tired arms, to reach the final peak you have to haul yourself up a near vertical cliff, which stretches almost to the height of Ryburn’s building. Multiple times I found

myself almost falling back down to the ground, but just managed to grab hold in time.

But, the effort was more than worth it. By this time, the sun had begun to set, and so from the final tip of Ingleborough’s peak we watched the golden glow of the evening illuminate our path. We saw everything we had done, the distance we had made and the seemingly impossible climbs we had achieved.

The feeling of pride was immense.

Everyone here was happy, no matter how exhausted they were.

All that was left now was the downhill race back to the start, on that street corner by a pub in Horton in Ribblesdale, my own goal to get a time of 10 hours.

Even with my legs giving way, checking the time, I found myself running down the street. Rain had begun falling and the cold drops restored my energy to full. I ran down the road, crossed over to the corner and checked the time.

It was 5:30pm, exactly 10 hours since we began.

I looked up to the first peak, to where the journey began, and from the rain came a rainbow.

A beautiful way to end a brilliant day.

THE INTEGRAL HEART FAMILY Our intrepid adventurers managed to raise over £850 for the Integral Heart Family in Guatemala, a charity closely linked with our Languages Department.

Education costs a lot of money in Guatemala, and the charity helps less privileged children get an education and a better life. Over the past two years, Ryburn has raised nearly £2000 for them. If you’d like to donate to our fundraising total, see the Languages Leaders.

DO YOU HAVE WHAT IT TAKES? If Lewis’s tales of adventure have inspired you, maybe you’d like to have a go? The Languages Leaders are planning another Three Peaks Challenge this summer. The full distance is a match for the fittest, maybe those who’ve already enjoyed Duke of Edinburgh expeditions.

But there’s also the option of a shorter route, and it all raises money for a brilliant cause.

WELCOME TO THE

NURTURE This year we launched something brand new and very exciting at Ryburn - our Nurture Centre - but only a few students know what it’s about. VIBE wanted to find out. Here’s your sneak peek at what goes on inside.

All children and young people have the same basic needs - to be loved, accepted and encouraged. Only if those needs are met can they go on to tackle the challenges of school and life with confidence and resilience. For many students with social, emotional and behavioural difficulties, spending time in the wonderfully warm and accepting environment of a Nurture group can make all the difference. I can give them the skills to do well at school, make friends, and deal more confidently and calmly with the trials and tribulations of life, for life. That was the vision we wanted to bring to Ryburn.

After weeks of hard work over the summer, the old Media Block was transformed, and our brand new STEP Centre opened in the autumn term. This great new space is part of our provision for students with special educational needs and disabilities. As well as classrooms for Literacy, Personal Learning and Vocational Skills, it also includes a room with a different feel from the rest of the school. Cosy corners, board games, art materials and a dining area with a jolly tablecloth, our Nurture Centre is something new.

Each Nurture group meet there a few times each week for several months. As well as the nourishing environment, they do lots of activities that also help to break down their barriers to learning. This includes a shared reading book, crafts and games, all of which are designed to practice skills like communication, social skills and emotional literacy.

THE SIX PRINCIPLES OF NURTURE Nurture groups follow these six principles. Mrs Holmes and Mrs Batty (Jo and Julie to the students) run the Nurture Centre at Ryburn.

RYBURN READS Just like in iGen, reading together is a great way to explore the emotions and issues faced by the characters in the book. Here’s our review.

Lots of local businesses, Ryburn staff, and families have been so generous in supporting the Nurture Centre. We’ve had donations of furniture, games and so much lovely food.

Together we are reading The Man in the Moon. It’s about a boy named Peter who has no parents. As the book goes on, he learns more about himself. It follows him through different challenges and emotions, including being bullied for being mixed race. After reading each chapter, we do activities like storyboards based around what we have read, and talk about the emotions and children’s philosophy in the book. Reading together really helps us to understand how people think and feel.

BEE Happy! A display of bees radiates positivity.

The students have been painting pebbles from the beach. Just like us, they are all different; imperfect but beautiful.

SNACK TIME Sharing food and drinks at snack is one of our favourites. We make our snacks ourselves. Here’s a simple and yummy recipe you can try.

• 4 TBSP SELF-RAISING FLOUR • 4 TBSP CASTER SUGAR • 2 TBSP COCOA POWDER • 1 MEDIUM EGG • 3 TBSP MILK • 3 TBSP VEGETABLE OIL OR SUNFLOWER OIL • A FEW DROPS OF VANILLA ESSENCE OR OTHER ESSENCE (ORANGE OR PEPPERMINT WORK WELL) • 2 TBSP CHOCOLATE CHIPS, NUTS, OR RAISINS ETC (OPTIONAL) • A LARGE MUG • A TABLESPOON (TBSPFOR MEASURING) • A FORK OR A TEASPOON (TO MIX)

MICROWAVE MUG CAKE 1. Add 4 tbsp self-raising flour, 4 tbsp caster sugar and 2 tbsp cocoa powder to the largest mug you have (to stop it overflowing in the microwave) and mix.

2. Add 1 medium egg and mix in as much as you can, but don’t worry if there’s still dry mix left.

3. Add the 3 tbsp milk, 3 tbsp vegetable or sunflower oil and a few drops of vanilla essence and mix until smooth, before adding 2 tbsp chocolate chips, nuts, or raisins, if using, and mix again.

4. Centre your mug in the middle of the microwave oven and cook on High for 1½ -2 mins, or until it has stopped rising and is firm to the touch.

HOW DO YOU USE SOCIAL MEDIA? Daizie I use it mostly to keep in touch with friends. I like looking through everyone’s day to day lives and their stories.­­It is part of my social life.

Scarlett I’m the same. I have private accounts and I don’t follow anyone that I don’t know. I use it to share what I’m doing with my friends and see what they’re doing as well.

Adam I also use it for entertainment when I’m bored, like cartoons and jokes.

The Explore tab on Instagram recommends stuff to look at and it’s funny.

Flora I spend 14 hours on social media a week. It might sound a lot but that is literally all of my screen time. I’ll be chatting to my friends, looking at other people’s lives, famous people, clothes. You can look at everything you want all in one place.

Yasmin People can also use it to express themselves. It could backfire because people can obviously comment and they may say nasty things, but there are lots of people being honest and creative and

sharing things, and that can be really positive.

HOW DO YOU STAY SAFE WHILST USING SOCIAL MEDIA? Evie The social media sites can be dangerous, but on most of them it’s your decision because you can choose how to use them. You have to be careful and use your common sense. For example, on Snapchat you should set it to ‘ghost mode’ otherwise people can see your location. You can choose to keep your accounts private and only approve friend requests from people you know. It’s your choice.

Yasmin One thing that I still have to remind myself of now is that if I post something, even on my private story, people can take a screenshot of that and post it publicly on anything. They can put it anywhere.

Flora Just this morning, I got asked to send something which I really didn’t want to send, so I blocked the person. There’s always a way to get help. There’s three little dots at the top of every post, if you press that, you get various options. You can report it, block the person, unfollow, or share it - be careful not to press the wrong one! And if you’re worried, talk to someone.

WHAT IS AN INFLUENCER? HAVE YOU EVER BOUGHT OR DONE SOMETHING BECAUSE OF ONE? Fern An influencer is someone popular or famous who makes other people want to be like them. They might influence people to do good things but also bad things like they might influence you to do shoplifting.

Yasmin It’s someone people look up to and who has lot of followers or subscribers on social media. Some influencers are paid to promote things with brand deals. Sometimes that’s helpful but sometimes I think they’re just doing it for the money.

Scarlett When I was quite a bit younger and Smiggle and slime was all the rage, I used to buy lots of things I’d seen in Youtube videos, like different ingredients to make slime, or those hair bows.

WHAT AGE SHOULD YOU GET A SMART PHONE? Fern The world is getting more and more high tech and children are growing up in that world and should learn about it. I had an iPad when I was little, which I could use to play games or text my family. It had to be on wifi so I could only use it at home.

When you start getting a bit more independent towards going to high school you need to start having more of your own responsibilities, like maybe get a basic phone first and social media later.

Isaac I think that you need a phone when you get into high school so that if there’s an emergency or something then you can call your parents. And then it really depends what you are going do with it if you have it before them.

Adam I think when you have social media depends when you mature because there’s lots of bad things that you can do or that can happen to you on it and you’ve got to deal with it.

Fern Apps have age minimum ages, but it’s very easy to lie, so it doesn’t work that well.

Flora Yeah, it’s all about what you do on it, because some people do stupid things but they could be in Year 7 doing that, or they could be 35.

Yasmin As well as it being our responsibility to make safe choices, I think people’s parents should check it too and make sure that you know what you’re doing.

Flora Lots of my family follow me on social media. My mum can see everything that I post. I can trust her. And if there’s anything a bit dodgy, I’ll just tell her and she will help me sort it out.

WHAT CAN GO WRONG? Flora You see some people post really bad pictures! You might post something on your private profile, but one person could send it to all the people in your form and then one of those people could send it to everyone in the school, it keeps growing and it gets you down. It

might haunt you on the internet forever. You have to remember that when you decide what to post in the first place.

Fern As soon as you press send, it’s gone out of your control.

Scarlett Social media should be used for having fun and sharing with your friends and messaging them. But then it can also be used for the wrong reasons like bullying.

Flora Some people say horrible things about other people on social media, things they’d never say in ‘real life’ but it can be just as hurtful. I look at people’s Yolos and it’s just horrific. That’s this app you can add on to Snapchat, where you can ask for comments and then anyone can type an anonymous message and you don’t know who it is.

Scarlett Sometimes kids can download apps that are too old for them, or spend money in games without really knowing what they are doing.

Daizie I’ll admit that I was that very dumb child. I made a password and I spent loads of money on games– ‘My Little Pony’ to be specific.

Evie There are ways to to stop that from happening. I have this thing where if I try to download a new app, it sends a notification to my mum and she can go and look at the app and decide whether to approve it or not. If she doesn’t then I can’t get the app. It means she can keep track of what apps I am using and we can have conversations about what is a good idea.

Isaac Some apps can be quite sneaky.

Those terms and conditions when you first download the app – you never read it do you? Some of

them have things in saying you give permission for them to see your location or your information.

There’s been privacy issues with some apps.TER? DOES SOCIAL MEDIA MAKE YOU FEEL UNDER PRESSURE? Isaac Nowadays, there are so many new ways that can affect people’s self esteem, and social media can definitely be one of those.

Flora When you post something, you feel a bit like ‘oh I quite like this photo I’ll post it’ and when it’s been up for 12 minutes and you get only three likes and one comment. It feels a bit sad.

Fern You can see if people have viewed it as well, so you know if people have viewed it but not liked it, and that doesn’t feel good.

Scarlett And because other people can see how many likes you’ve got, then they might say ‘Oh, you only got 70 likes on that. You must not be that popular’ or use it against you. If you start worrying about it too much, then it can get worse and worse.

Toby But it doesn’t matter. It doesn’t measure anything that actually matters about you so it’s best not to worry about it.

OUR TOP TIPS Evie Be careful who you let follow you and who you follow because you may not know who it is.

Max If you get something hurtful said to you or you are worried about something, tell someone. Don’t just bottle it up or it can just get worse.

Fern Don’t get competitive or worry about how many likes, or how many comments, or how many followers you have. It doesn’t matter!

Toby Don’t feel like you have to do anything online. Remember that you can be in control of it too.

Isaac Do your research about apps so you can be smart. Find out about and check your privacy settings and how to block or report content you don’t want to see.

Scarlett What you say can affect you later in life, so never say anything that you’ll regret. Don’t be stupid. Never post or share anything racist, sexist, or mean against anybody. Keep it nice!

Flora Pretend your grandma’s gonna see what you do and think, ‘would your grandma be happy seeing what you’re sending?’ If not, don’t post it.

Adam Above all, just enjoy it, keep it fun. And if it’s not - get off it and go do something else instead!

MY STRANGE OBSESSION ACROBATICS For our Careers issue, VIBE spoke to Martha Harrison, whose childhood obsession with gymnastics became an amazing career.

WHAT IS MY OBSESSION? My job is performing acrobatics and trapeze across Europe for different companies. It all started when I was 6 and I went to my first gymnastics class and absolutely loved it! I trained really hard and managed to compete in the British National Championships.

When I was 20 I did a circus degree at The National Centre for Circus Arts where I also now teach.

I am an acrobat, performing hand to hand acrobatics (where you stand on each other’s shoulders) and an aerialist, performing on a trapeze. I am also a Head of Year on a circus degree in London, which is brilliant as I get to work with lots of inspiring students who are just starting their own training to become part of the circus world.

WHY AM I OBSESSED WITH IT? There are lots of things I love about the circus. I love the training, the friends you make along the way, the travelling, but mostly I love creating new tricks!

THINGS YOU NEED TO KNOW • There are lots of types of acrobatics and circus skills you can try, including trapeze, hula hooping, juggling and tightwire.

• Circus is very creative. It’s an international melting pot of dance, art, costume, make up, music, storytelling, comedy and acting as well as acrobatic strength.

• Acrobats can perform all over the place, from arena concerts to fashion shows, from street festivals to the Royal Opera House.

WHERE SHOULD YOU START? If you were interested in becoming a circus performer, it is important to really love what you do. There are lots of different ways to start. There are circus classes all around the country which you can try. You could do gymnastics or dance. You could do free running or juggling, but you have to be passionate about practicing. You have to be having fun or it becomes a chore!

WORDS ON PAPER In January, poet Matt Abbott came to Ryburn for the day to talk poetry with a group of our Year 8 and Year 10 boys. We talked about the power of writing to give a voice to the unspoken, and then put pen to paper. It was a brilliant day.

VIBE managed to get our hands on some of the poems created in the workshop.

These are creative exercises, excerpts and works in progress but we absolutely love the ideas and creativity sparking off the page.

Or do I want to change the world? Make a change, Then I can have a good reason for the fame; Not for doing silly videos or making stupid trends, But for making good friends; People I didn’t know until I helped them.

SPORT THE BIG INTERVIEW JADE MOORE, ENGLAND FOOTBALL TEAM

HOW DID YOU END UP IN FOOTBALL? My route into football started with going and watching my dad play football. I used to stand on the side of the pitch with my grandad and just kick the ball back and forth with him. I didn’t really take much interest in what my dad was doing on the pitch, but I was just fixated with the football and always had one at my feet.

When I was around 10 years of age, I first got into a local football team. It was a girls football team, because then there weren’t many boys teams that allowed girls to play. Once I got into a team, they said ‘okay, she’s a little bit better than this level. Let’s take it to a better team and see where she goes’. So I ended up at Doncaster Rovers Belles, which was a massive team back in the day for women’s football and that was basically where my career started.

WHAT’S BEEN THE HIGHLIGHT OF YOUR CAREER? I’ve got three highlights to my career. Obviously one is playing in the recent World Cup in France, and seeing the number of fans and how much the popularity of popularity of women’s football has grown since since the previous one.

Winning the bronze medal in the 2015 World Cup in Canada will always be a highlight too, as a great achievement for us as a group. The momentum was with us and then we took every game that came and we were so close to making the final that year.

From a domestic side, my highlight would be the Champions League semi final when I played for Birmingham. We were underdogs throughout the whole of that and that was a very special moment for the club and my career at that time.

WHAT MIGHT A TYPICAL DAY MIGHT LOOK LIKE FOR PROFESSIONAL FOOTBALLER? A typical day in the life of a professional footballer starts early. You wake up and go straight into training.

Breakfast with the team and then into the gym for some sort of pre activation work to help with niggles or stop injuries, and then out into the training field. We

The rest of the day is usually spent recuperating, resting, and making sure you’re doing all the other stuff off the pitch. That’s taking care of your nutrition, hydration recovery, that side of things. So it’s nonstop from the minute that you wake up to the time that you go to sleep. It is football mad.

WHAT DO YOU ENJOY ABOUT FOOTBALL? The thing that I enjoy most about football is being part of a team. Because you can rely on other people, to dig you out if you’re not having a great game. You’ve got people to lean on. When I grew up, I tended to lean towards team sports rather than individual sports. I like the camaraderie and the banter that comes along with it.

There is never a dull moment.

And the competitive side of sports has always been something that’s driven me. I think every sports person is very competitive, I certainly am.

HAVE YOU GOT A PIECE OF ADVICE THAT YOU’D GIVE A YOUNG PERSON? I know it’s quite cliche, but my advice in life is to never give up. No matter how many people tell you that you can’t do it, if you know that you can, if you keep pushing and if you keep doing the right things, then you will get there. If you’ve got the determination, the strength and the attitude of hard work, you’ll get there. So don’t give up. Make sure you work hard.

I think one of the biggest things is to make sure that whatever you do, you enjoy it. Doing it with a smile on your face makes a big difference.

train for roughly an hour and a half to two hours, have lunch, and then get back into the gym for a strength and conditioning session. So we probably start at around nine and finish training around 3.30pm.
