“Aggregating Experiences Where The River Flows”
Design Studio 4, Final Project, Individual
Project Brief
This project involves new model for future waterfront living by designing a unique prefabricated housing system as a response to the unmet housing needs of today.
Location
Located along the Rochor Canal at the former Sungei Road, this project aims to create an empowering community hub within Jalan Besar by capitalising on the waterfront living experience. N Site Plan
Design Concept
The concept behind the design was to empower the aging population on 2 levels - Residential and Commercial - to allow them to age resiliently despite facing inevitable health decline and live with a sense of purpose after their retirement.
Most importantly, to allow the seniors to live with dignity.
Rooftop Communal Space
Challenge Statement
“How might we spatially empower the aging population so that they can age resiliently with a sense of purpose?
Opportunities
Sense of Purpose: Creating a ‘Vibrant Aged Community’
• Intergenerational Bonding - facilitating interactions
• Active Engagement, volunteering for a cause
Resilient Aging: ‘Community Ageing with Place’
• Network of communal support
• Creating a sense of normality and security
Users
Primary: Seniors, Secondary: Young Couples
By 2030, around 1 in 4 citizens, or 23.8% will be age 65 and above.
Life expectancy has also gone up from 82.8 years in 2010 to 84.9 years in 2019.
They face challenges such as lack of engagement and a sense of purpose as they have nothing to do at home.
Social islation and loneliness is also on the rise as the number of seniors living alone and is increasing.
From the drop-off, visitors are welcomed by the commercial shophouses before being led towards the community plaza and the canal-side promenade.
Pedestrian access into the site are from the Park Connector Network (PCN) along side the Rochor Canal.
The community plaza acts as a transition space as visitors and residents move from the shophouse towards the canal, further emphasising on the waterfront living experience.

On the Residential Level, with focus on ‘Kampong Living’, seniors living right beside the younger generation will be able to live independently while having communal support, facilitated by the residential communal spaces.
Residential Communal Space
On the Commercial front, with focus on purposeful activities, seniors run meaningful businesses that contribute back to the community, either through sharing their knowledge or provide support to organisations through donating profits/providing manpower support.

Architectural Design
Designed to be a mixed-use development, the architectural design of this building is split into 2 - the residential units and podium shophouses.
At the residential units, passive design strategies are employed to reduce the solar heat gain and promote cross ventillation.
• Louvres: porous, allow for cross ventilation and natural sunlight.
• Vertical greenery: complement the louvres by providing shade while cooling the surrounding environment down.
• Double-volume communal space: promote cross-ventilation and stack effect
Shophouses are a common sight in the Jalan Besar area. They represent the past, the cultural diveristy and rich heritage of Singapore. Therefore, to pay homage to that which makes the area so unique, the podium is designed after the shophouses with a modern take.
The shophouse facade continues the vertical language of the louvres and help provides continuation from the top of the buillding to the ground.

“Connecting People with Nature”
Design Studio 3, Final Project, Individual
Project Brief
This project invovles proposing the new ‘Kampung Kampus’ of Ground-Up Initiative (GUI) that aims to:
• Educate the community about the sustainable farming methods and practices
• Engage the community in activities that promote responsibility towards the environment
• Exchange of services and economic activities for the community to partake in
Location
This project is located at GUI’s new site, behind HomeTeamNS Khatib. Within the created masterplan, the ‘Kampung Kampus’ Heartquarters is located at the centre of the site.
Design Concept
The concept behind the design is to create a place that allows visitors to rejuvenate themselves through slowing down and relaxing.
N
Challenge Statement
“How might we create spaces for GUI visitors to rejuvenate through activities that allows them to pause, slow down and reflect?” Opportunities
• “Pause” - Tea Spaces
• “Slow down” - Reading Lounge
• “Reflect” - Discussion Lounge
By keeping spaces as open as possible, more natural light and cross ventilation are present, blurring the boundaries between the indoors and outdoors. This will bring the experience of “relaxing” and “freedom” which facilitates clearer reflections.
Users
Primary: Visitors, Secondary: GUI Staff
To educate the general public, outreach efforts must be made towards those who are currently unaware of GUI and offer them what they need in their busy lives, capitaising on the unique selling point of GUI.
As part of their job requirements, GUI staff are required to be on site during working hours. Therefore, the design must cater for them as well.

2nd Level Floor Plan
The ground floor is made to be the “public level”. Kept as open as possible, it is designed this way to be inviting to visitors and spurring them to come visit the space. There is also visual accessibility from one end of the site to the other, allowing visitors to see what is across.
The 2nd level is more private compared to the ground floor. This is where activities that helps to faciliate mindfulness and relaxation takes place. The pace of life on this floor is generally slower.

To achieve visual lightness, steel beams are utilised and the structural systems of the buildings are exposed. The buildings thus also take on a more “natural”, raw form that also aims to mimic “real” nature, one that is not made to be aesthetic.
Visitors will be able to better appreciate nature for what it is, not what it is designed to be.
The spaces are designed to be as open as possible. Except for the office, little walls are used and louvres are mainly used to define the spaces. This is to help users feel a sense of “lightness” and “freedom” which is essential to for them to feel more rejuvenated.
The separation of volume of spaces also helps to enhance that feeling of “detachment”.

Our DE Life

Our DE Life
“A ‘DE-light-ful’ Social Space”
Design Studio 3, Parametric Design, Group.
Project Brief
This project involves designing and fabricating a ‘DE-light-ful Social Space’ structure in the School of Design Environment which will be a new beacon of social interactions between all members of the school community.
Location
Located at the School of Design & Envrionment’s foyer, the structure aims to be a:
• structure that uses recycled material to enhance the quality of the space and promote gathering
• landmark that reflects the culture and values of DE Community
• social space for at least 2 activities to take place
Design Concept
Built for the DE Students, Our DE Life aims to celebrate the life of the DE students rather than focusing on their academic achievements. This structure is a tribute for students, made by students, made for the future to come, and for the future to see and be inspired by.
Challenge Statement
“How might we create an interactive structure that encourages students to linger around it?”
Culture & Value
Our DE Life gives students the opportunity to share their memories of school, through polaroids, pictures and handwritten notes.
Students can bring polaroids or printed images of their experiences in DE and write accompanying notes telling their stories, before hanging them in one of the many modules that make up the structure, in the same way our memories make up the School of Design & Environment.
