“Rhythm” is a teaching salon in a professional environment with a specialized clientele of women of religious minorities seeking privacy and comfort. Kevin Murphy is a hair product company that touches on hair education, but is expanding to having a physical teaching salon where they continue their sustainable practices. Safety and security are the main priorities of the design so users feel safe and comfortable. The research focus encompasses not only how to style hair when there are religious practices to follow, but how to teach it.

Toronto is considered one of the most ethnically diverse populations in the world, with more than half of Torontonians born abroad, and more than half being a visible minority. With a large concentration of residents in the neighbourhoods around Yorkdale consisting of Jewish families, the area includes synagogues within walking distance to the home. This makes the location a key factor to the project type.

Salon Industry Sustainable Implementation
Per minute, the beauty industry sends 887 pounds of waste to the landfill
Per salon wash, 45 gallons of water become contaminated
• Hair clippings are composted, and are used for absorbing oil spills, and research of insulation and filtration
• Excess hair colour is turned into clean energy, and is separated and filtered as water and oil elements
• Metals are sorted and melted for reuse as car and bicycle parts
• Materials in the salon are sourced locally, meets LEED standards, provides environmental product declarations and are durable
Rhythm is the continual pattern of movement in one’s hair. These forms of patterns are represented through the design of the salon through material and furniture selection, and the use of design elements and principles.
The customers of this project have needs that may be unique; they are women of religious minorities that are observing certain practices involving their hair. The rhythm can be recognized in elements and symbols from their religions.

Ample shelving and storage for wash colour and cleaning supplies
The Private Salon offers an opportunity for clients to be in a one-on-one space with the stylist where they can receive their desired service. They can be relaxed and unconcerned about the religious needs during the service due to the layout and privacy of the space. This space is divided by two salon chairs and a shared wash station.
Private Salon Stations axonometric view
Windows are covered with a frosted film providing a blurred effect, and there are sheer curtains. This allows light to still penetrate from the exterior space while allowing privacy from passerby’s
Ergonomic chair - tilts back for neck comfort in the wash bowl, stool can be pulled out to elevate feet, and armrests can be rotated down for ADA accessibility
The Semi-Private Salon features twelve styling chairs where a client can choose whether their appointment is public or private. There is a custom curtain track allowing for each station to be surrounded if the client is seeking that level of privacy. Each station features a mirror lined with LED strips and storage within, a durable chair that swivels and is adjustable in height, a stool on wheels for the stylist, and a trolley for the supplies needed for the service.
Reflected Ceiling Plan
The reception is the first space viewed entering Rhythm from the exterior entrance. It is where the clients will check in. On each side of the reception is built in individual seats, and drawers where the hair products are store to be nearby check-out. Past the reception is the waiting area where clients will wait for their stylist to bring them to the space they are receiving their service. Past the waiting area is the Coffee bar and secondary check-in point for those entering the space from inside the mall. it mimics the reception plan as seen in the repetitive motifs from the concept.
From the waiting area, a stylist leads their client to where they will receive their service. From the waiting area with 15’ ceilings, they enter a hallway with lower ceilings like a passageway. The ‘passage’ is a simpler frame shape of most motifs seen entering a religious structure. The doors are frosted and textured glass making the private salon spaces within here completely isolated and unexposed. Through the ‘passage’ there is the semi-private salon, and to the other side, the training space. The ceiling design of the ‘passage’ is based on the original design of the mall ceiling displaying pattern.
Raised ceiling height for a differentiated experience within this space, alleviating stress approaching the appointment. Ceiling features a warm colourful mosaic and a radial pattern of pendants.
Entrance from the mall side, approaches the coffee bar first and can complete a self check-in before sitting in the waiting area
Waiting area features a radial pattern in custom furniture where the clients can choose the best spot for their comfort and view. There are indoor plants surrounding to be welcoming
Custom built-ins store products for sale and features single seats in swing shape and cushions for comfort
The reception desk is a custom design of reclaimed glass blocks with a brass cylinder connecting the stone counter top. There is bar height and ADA accessible height so it can be used by all
Workplace & Childcare Design
Winter 2022
Savannah, United States
Individual Project
Revit, Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign, Enscape
The possibilities in a co-working environment are endless when quality childcare is offered. The concept behind Cova’s new co-working and childcare facility is based on the nurturing bond between a parent and their child. Within a nurturing environment for professional and personal lives, everything will thrive, such as how a cocoon creates the perfect environment for growth. A cocoon provides comfort and possibility, which is seen in the concept and designs for Cova. Users will experience Cova through the collaboration of materials (colours, patterns, textures) and workspaces (private, public, collaborative). The environment provides users with collaboration and productivity.

The structure was listed as a historic landmark
SCAD purchased and re-purposed the building
The location is in Savannah, Georgia in a four-story building with the project site on the second floor. There will be an elevator, ramp, and stairs to make the design universal. The main entrance is on Martin Luther King Blvd, leading you directly to the second floor.
Sustainability is effectively implemented through designing with natural materials and other elements
Universal Design is incorporated to achieve a space accessible to every user and meeting ADA requirements, with no discrimination towards any users
Way finding is an effective tool in managing movement and the flow of people through a space. It can encourage a sense of wellbeing and security, and improve the user experience

The space allows users to drift through like a butterfly, with wings being represented in the layout and furniture selection. It is organized to amplify the nurturing environment as a place for growth and collaboration
The reception is a welcoming place for people seeking assistance or new members entering at the beginning of their experience of the Cova co-work space. The wall is intended to be an eye-catching design as it may be some peoples’ first impression of the company. The reception desk is a custom design including conceptual elements and accessibility for everyone.
From the main entrance, the user can see directly through to the back. The wall-toceiling feature leads the eye in that direction as a guiding element, and incorporates ambient lighting. The columns assist with creating division in the open-concept space. To the sides, there is desk seating, either a more collaborative table arrangement or desks that are more of a cubicle style.
The childcare facility is a fun space for growth and nurture of the children while providing ease of mind for the parent. There is space for rest, play, eating, and learning. The space is interactive with the chalkboard wall and modular plush furniture pushing the children to learn while having fun.

Spring 2022
Lacoste, France, Savannah & Atlanta, United States
Collaborative Project
Revit, Photoshop, Google Suite
The project was intended to recreate the experience of living in Lacoste, a small village in the South of France, through the five human senses (taste, sound, touch, smell and sight) by conceptualizing a pop up event. The class collaborated on the architectural design of the pods, then separated into groups of 3, each group focusing on one of the senses per pod. This focus is the Taste Pod. The site for the project is in Lacoste, France. From there, the exhibition will travel to the United States to Savannah, GA and Atlanta, GA, allowing users to experience Lacoste in other locations.

The exterior of the structure features a modern rendition of traditional materials found throughout Lacoste. There is a natural wood exterior with panels of antiqued bronze and brass. The roof is a glass composition allowing light to enter and illuminate the interior.
The entrance features a “Bread Oven” as a unique twist on the vernacular dry corbeling stone construction techniques used for the homes and stone ovens in bakeries in France. As the user enters, they can choose which direction to begin their journey.
Past the entrances, the “Farm-to-Table” exhibits feature the growth of lavender and cherries as the local agriculture of Lacoste.
The recipe wall is an area where users can take authentic French recipes from the cork board, inspired by wine corks. There is a ledge provided to write notes or new recipes to add a personal touch on the wall for other users to explore. The floor is a mosaic tile made of broken ceramic plates. The ceiling is designed as largescale cheese with holes allowing light to penetrate through and acts as way finding, directing users along the perimeter of the pod.
The layered table exhibition expands and contracts like an accordion, representing the multiple layers of an elaborate dinner. It is encompassed within a “wine barrel”, with an antique bronze light fixture and LED strips along the layer’s support on the side to illuminate the exhibit. The wall features stacked plates, sourced from local artists, and bloom from the wall.
