It all started with this photo my friend Noelle posted to her Instagram. The photo was simply a film photo she had taken with a disposable camera of her desk in the senior studio at school.

There wasn’t anything in particular on the desk just the usual laptop, iPhone, ruler, etc. Although the subject matter was somewhat mundane, its significance was in how it acted as a window to a place in the past. Instead of showing a particular memory or person it instead shows a place that reminds her of all the people and memories there.

I found this especially interesting because photography has taken a different place in our lives today. We often snap away just to tell our friends whats happening right now only to forget those photos even existed tomorrow when we’re somewhere else. Photography is seen as a way to get instant gratification through likes, shares, retweets, and comments. However, Noelle’s photo was not a just a quick snap, but a tangible window to a place in time that will be cherished, and revisited and carries much more sentimental weight.

Inspired by Noelle’s photo I decided that in the summer of 2015 I would take 3 photos a day on disposable cameras in order capture the places where my life happened. Throughout the project I began to think a lot about memories and how taking a photo preserves them. I wondered about everything that took place over the course of a day that didn’t get photographed, and what would happen to those moments. I found that our lives are made up of a lot of moments that get lost. Time lived that doesn’t get remembered. Our Identities and the memories we do have are the result of many little moments that are not remembered.

This lost time is when we think, grow, discover, exercise, and dream.

This project serves to illustrate this idea of places and lost moments. A lot of the photos are simply of mundane things such as my morning commute

or desk at work, but that was the majority of my summer. Interestingly enough when I got all the photos developed not all of them came out. About a fourth of the photos I took were lost and can never be seen, acting as a very real illustration of this idea of lost time.

Over the course of this project I took 270 photos with 10 disposable cameras and the 207 photos that made it are in this book. The photos are displayed on their own without any descriptors. The date and time are irrelevant and the photos simply serve as a reminder of that place and moment.
