BISEXUAL –physically, romantically and/or emotionally attracted to men and women.
% of young LGBT people have sought medical help for anxiety or depression”
COMING OUT –people forge a lesbian, gay, bisexual or transgender identity first to themselves and then may reveal it to others. Publicly identifying one’s orientation may or may not be part of coming out.
GAYused to refer to a male or female whose sexual orientation is attraction to persons of the same sex and/or gender.
LESBIANa woman whose enduring physical, romantic and/or emotional attraction is to other women.
HETEROSEXUAL –used to describe people whose enduring physical, romantic and/or emotional attraction is to people of the opposite sex. Also known as straight.
HOMOPHOBIAused to refer to a range of negative attitudes and feelings towards lesbian, gay and in some cases bisexual, transgender people.
HOMOSEXUALoutdated clinical term considered derogatory and offensive by many gay and lesbian people.
TRANSGENDERterm for people whose gender identity differs from what is typically associated with the sex they were assigned at birth.
TRANSSEXUALappearing as, wishing to be considered as, or having undergone surgery to become a member of the opposite sex.
‘Youth Chances’ Metrocente Online 2014
Personally, I was so scared to come out. I was so fond of my foster carers but once I heard some of their views on LGBT people, it made me shutdown and I became very standoffish with them. It knocked my confidence in confiding in adults about my sexuality.
A tutor at school questioned me about my sexuality, but I was too scared to come out to them. I feel it’s important to remember that a lack of support from family, friends and services can make coming out and growing up confusing and isolating for young people in care..”
I AM COMPLETELY COMFORTABLE TALKING ABOUT MY SEXUALITY WITH OTHER YOUNG PEOPLE
“All young people, regardless of sexual orientation or identity, deserve a safe and supportive environment in which to achieve their full potential”
I AM 18. (I live in Bridgwater)
I’ve created this booklet with the help of Fixers, because I believe foster carers need a deeper
understanding
“Coming out can be very daunting, but reactions entirely depend on who you’re telling. There are people you know you can come out to, who won’t judge. You don’t have to worry about their reactions, because you know they’ll be supportive.” INTRO MY NAME IS EMMA
of children in care who are LGBT.
In my experience, these are the things people should remember when dealing with a young person who identifies as lesbian, gay, bisexual or transgender.
FOSTER CARE & LGBT
While it is difficult to determine the precise number of Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender youth in the foster care system, government figures state that between 5-7% of the population identify themselves as LGBT
It’s important for foster carers to be open-minded, confident and comfortable talking about sexuality with a foster child.
Foster carers need to be very careful about the statements they make about lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender issues, especially when they’re around a foster child. The way foster carers act –whether it’s facial expressions, body language, their tone of voice, or the language they use –can have a massive effect on a young person coming to terms with their sexuality.
“By adopting, we stretch past our immediate circles and, by reaching out, find an unexpected sense of belonging with others.”

QUOTES FROM PARENTS
“Having a baby born so early is horrendous. Nothing will ever compare to the worry and fear that felt in those days watching my son fight for his life. knew had to be the strong one for my family, although deep down was petrified.”
- Michael Morgan Baby born at 28 weeks
“My first baby was born at 22 weeks. He was too small so there was nothing they could do to save him. 5 months later, whilst trying to piece our world back together, found out that was expecting again. We were so happy yet petrified. Physically was monitored closely but not my mental health.”
- Tina Lo Baby born at 22 weeks
“It s such a surreal experience and don t think it really sank in until a few weeks after we came home. At the time had such a range of emotions, but think just operated on auto drive. know my baby was being looked after and she was in the best place, just didn t feel like was a proper mother.”
- Melanie Rossiter Baby born at 33 weeks
FROM MY EXPERIENCE
WHAT YOU MAY EXPERIENCE WHILE IN HOSPITAL
• The hospital journey is never plain sailing Trust your own instincts, you are the parent, you know your own baby
• Your baby is yours, not the nurses or doctors
• Ask for help if you need it Your baby may come off oxygen, but also may go back on within an hour
• 1 step forward, 2 steps back
• Dad may get pushed out You may feel like a nurse rather than a mum
WHAT YOU MAY EXPERIENCE AFTER DISCHARGE
Attachment issues, struggling to bond Worries about their development
• Questioning yourself; ‘Am a good mum?’ ‘Am doing the right thing?’
You may feel you cannot open up and talk to people about your experience
• You may still get emotional triggers, even years down the line. The pain may never leave you You may feel judged by other parents
WAYS TO HELP OVERCOME THESE
• Talk to someone
• Open up Get the help you need Do not feel like you are alone

What is dyspraxia?
Who
We are a group of young people from Middlesbrough. We feel that dyspraxia is not well understood. As a result, there is a lack of support available. For some of us, our schools identified our dyspraxia. They saw our handwriting wasn’t up to the same standard as other children, our reading skills were poorer and we weren’t able to retain information. Often, we couldn’t play sports in the same way as other children and our social skills were affected.

Masks designed to raise awareness arounf the isues of fox hunting in Northern Ireland
Hi, my name is Bethany McCullough. I’m 19-years-old and want to talk to you about hunting with dogs in Northern Ireland. Animal welfare is an issue I am passionate about.
I live in a rural area and we are surrounded by wildlife. A family of foxes used to play in our garden at night but unfortunately they were killed by fox hunters. did some research into the issue and found out that Northern Ireland is the only country in the UK where it is still legal to hunt foxes with packs of dogs*. It made me question why Northern Ireland should be any different to England, Scotland or Wales
*inbrief.co.uk/sports-law/fox-hunting-with-dogs
am determined to make hunting with dogs illegal, and for our decision makers to instead consider better ways of controlling the animal population, where required. This subject does not get enough publicity, so I have made these masks

TEEN STRESS
david lloyd-morgan (friend of bethan)
ANXIETY & DEPRESSION
Who are you?
I’m David Lloyd-Morgan, am 20 years old.
What is your issue and how did it affect you?
I have anxiety and depression due to personal issues.
What do you do to overcome it?
I burn incense as it calms me, and I use different scents for different reasons. I also listen to music, and I have different genres, which I like to listen to according to my mood. Playing games helps, and also find mindfulness very helpful.
Positive message
I would say that while it is horrible to have anxiety and depression, it can actually have some positive outcomes too - for example you appreciate your friends and family more, you learn to appreciate your own company, or simply some quiet time. If you’re out by the sea or in a forest, you learn to appreciate the scenery as well. They’re all real positives.
Louie greenwood (former fixer)
Who you are?
My name’s Louie, and I’m 20 years old.
What is your issue?
The stress of being LGBTQ+ in school.
How did it affect you?
The fear of being judged or bullied stopped me from being able to be myself at school. I was always really scared that people would find out and treat me differently, so I distanced myself – but lost friends because of it. It affected my standard of work, and the stress of it all caused me not to reach my full potential.
What did you do to overcome it?
I joined my local LGBTQ+ group, and that helped me to surround myself with people who understood what I was going through. The other members helped me to figure out who am, and they taught me that it’s okay to be myself.
Positive message
Just be yourself and don’t be afraid. There are always people who will accept you and who will support you. It gets better!
