This short term researchprototype posits itself within the argument for parametric design research to focus its efforts on design methods that encompass an operative pathway from design intent to its manifestation. Physical form-finding-hanging chains and cloth, soap films, etc. and associated architectural design methods as pioneered by Antonio Gaudi, Heinz Isler, Frei Otto, Felix Candela and others is common knowledge among architects

The proposed research-prototype for the installation in the SCI-Arc Gallery aims to extend this work to adequately represent the ambitions and complexities of scale, digital design systems and delivery mechanisms of contemporary architectural practices. The installation will explore as a design-build exercise, synergies between architectural articulation, engineering logic and fabrication constraints.

It will continue Zaha Hadid Architects' on-going research on architectural articulation of self-supporting, curved surface geometries.

Architecture of Assistance

Sci Arc Thesis 2013

This Thesis is concerned with the idea of Architectural Assistance. The thesis began by investigating the flying buttress of the gothic era. People of that time needed to add windows to the gothic cathedral but subtracting material from the masonry construction resulted to its structural deficiency. The flying buttress was there to assist in transmitting the outward and downward thrust of the main walls to the buttress. It existed as a solution to an engineering problem but it transcended itself architecturally. The flying buttress then became one of the major elements that highlight the architectural character of gothic cathedrals.

Taking from the idea of assistance, the thesis attempts to challenge the understanding of tectonics as an expression of compromised structural integrity in contrary to the general conception of tectonics which is the expression of strength and stability.

Expressed Architectural Assistance is a tectonic of weight. Modernity introduced us to the cantilever and often, the goal is to express weightlessness and often an illusion of independence from any support or assistance. The cantilever has created moments of weight recognition but it is usually by making a very strong base that appears heavy and lighter weight structure for the over-hang.

The Cantilever has structural limitations. The cantilever usually causes difficulties once it exceeds 1/3 of the total back span. The project begins with the introduction of a seemingly impossible problem, the extreme cantilever of an entire concert hall. The mass extends from the ground hovering above the entry and plaza. At the Center of the mass there is a lightweight structural mesh that goes through the body and carries the weight from above.

In Conclusion, The building is a cantilever but the terms of the tectonic mass have been reversed.

Studio is about emulating real practice design situations where we are not always given the "perfect site" and the unlimited budget. We were taught to research mundane vernacular elements and apply them to the design to create an extraordinary building that is respectful of its context.

Ichose to take elements from parking strucures and freeways and used that as a starting point of the design. The ramping system allowed the building to have continuous circulatory loop through the building.

The project proposal is a mixed use commercial complex that will provide the Mar Vista community a hub for living a healthy lifestyle.

It has an urban farm, cafe, green house, fitness facility and spa. Programs are meant to give the community a place to eat healthy homegrown food, lose unhealthy weight and relax the mind.

This project was selected for the Sci Arc Spring Show 2012.

Living in a technologically mediated world have resulted to many social conncetions via virtual spaces. Traditionally social connections get established through friendship, kinship or geographic location such as communities.Looking closely at virtual communities, the intention of this project is to provide these groups a physical space in a residential complex. Creating interpendency between their virtual spaces and physical spaces and to expand their virtual networks to the physical networks.

This visual study is a material experimentation through the process of casting. The nature of digital modeling is the production of precised results. The interjection of the casting process and mix of different ingredients introduces unpredictability to the generation of form and tactility. This project started as a 3d model and then 3d printed. The printed model was used to create a mold. The intention is to produce multiple objects using the same mold and come up with variation of imperfect beautiful objects.

Oxymoronic Conditions

Sci Arc Studio

Advisor: Coy Howard

This visual study is focused on creating art pieces that expresses oxymoronic conditions such as the french term "jolie laide" which means beautiful ugly. The intention is to create ambiguity in aesthetic qualities of each piece. Image on the top left is a framed charcoal painting that went through a violent process which resulted to a feral aesthetic. Image on the top right is creating art with glue, paper and tape but not using them for its purpose. They were used to create texture and graphics. The bottom left diptych painting is a figure ground painting of an object with multiple asociations. Bottom right image is a photograph that merges the form of water with its reflection. These studies were used to design aesthetics of building in the end.

This model is a reinterpretation of the double-curved surface found in St.Mary's cathedral in San Francisco. The tectonic expression used for this model was an undulating slat structure to create a doublecurved surface.

Julienned White Rabbit Heart (JWRH)

Creating a volume that transfers loads off center from 4 points to the ground in 3 while creating an occupiable void at its center was the start. Then using this volume mass to trim a series of slotted panels to create a structure that at various angles portions become almost nonexistent. The same effect occurs when with in looking up. An additional effect is a seemingly random grid of pin plates suspended in space.

This class was about using steel plates to create a structure that can carry heavy load. This model is made of slats that are notched together All of our models were tested for structural integrity at ARUP. This process then allowed us to have better information on what part of the structure needs more material and what part does not. Also we are limited to how much material we can use so we had to be mindful of how much material we are wasting on a sheet of steel..
