The way foster carers act – whether it’s facial expressions, body language, their tone of voice, or the language they use – can have a massive effect on a young person coming to terms with their sexuality.

Foster carers need to be very careful about the statements they make about lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender issues, especially when they’re around a foster child.

It’s important for foster carers to be open-minded, confident and comfortable talking about sexuality with a foster child.

While it is difficult to determine the precise number of Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender youth in the foster care system, government figures state that between 5-7% of the population identify themselves as LGBT

In my experience, these are the things people should remember when dealing with a young person who identifies as lesbian, gay, bisexual or transgender.

I’ve created this booklet with the help of Fixers, because I believe foster carers need a deeper understanding of children in care who are LGBT.

“A tutor at school questioned me about my sexuality, but I was too scared to come out to them.

Personally, I was so scared to come out. I was so fond of my foster carers but once I heard some of their views on LGBT people, it made me shutdown and I became very standoffish with them. It knocked my confidence in confiding in adults about my sexuality.

We are a group of young people from Middlesbrough. We feel that dyspraxia is not well understood. As a result, there is a lack of support available.

What is dyspraxia?

Dyspraxia is a condition affecting physical coordination that causes a child to perform less well than expected in daily activities for his or her age, and appear to move clumsily.* Dyspraxia can have an impact on coordination, motor skills, sense of direction and commands. It is more common in boys than in girls and can have an impact on learning. There are also emotional impacts such as anxiety and depression — often due to feeling misunderstood.

How can you help?

Please don’t compare us to other students who don’t have dyspraxia.

It can take us a little longer to understand things.

We sometimes have difficulty in taking on board information during lessons.

Allowing extra time or teaching in small bursts, would be really helpful.

Raising our self-esteem will help us relax and learn better.

Check if we are understanding what is being taught. It can be difficult for us to copy from the blackboard, and embarrassing to ask.

Hi, my name is Bethany McCullough. I’m 19-years-old and want to talk to you about hunting with dogs in Northern Ireland.

Animal welfare is an issue I am passionate about.

I live in a rural area and we are surrounded by wildlife. A family of foxes used to play in our garden at night but unfortunately they were killed by fox hunters.

I did some research into the issue and found out that Northern Ireland is the only country in the UK where it is still legal to hunt foxes with packs of dogs*.

It made me question why Northern Ireland should be any different to England, Scotland or Wales. *inbrief.co.uk/sports-law/fox-hunting-with-dogs I am determined to make hunting with dogs illegal, and for our decision makers to instead consider better ways of controlling the animal population, where required.

I burn incense as it calms me, and I use different scents for different reasons. I also listen to music, and I have different genres, which I like to listen to according to my mood. Playing games helps, and I also find more, mindfulness very helpful.

Positive message I would say that while it is horrible to have anxiety and depression, it can actually have some positive outcomes too - for example you appreciate your friends and family more, you learn to appreciate your own company, or simply some quiet time. If you’re out by the sea or in a forest, you learn to appreciate the scenery as well. They’re all real positives.

My name’s Louie, and I’m 20 years old.

What is your issue?

The stress of being LGBTQ+ in school.

How did it affect you?

The fear of being judged or bullied stopped me from being able to be myself at school. I was always really scared that people would find out and treat me differently, so I distanced myself – but I lost friends because of it. It affected my standard of work, and the stress of it all caused me not to reach my full potential.

What did you do to overcome it?

I joined my local LGBTQ+ group, and that helped me to surround myself with people who understood what I was going through. The other members helped me to figure out who I am, and they taught me that it’s okay to be myself.
