Setting the Stage: The Black Hills State football team opens Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference action at home on Swarm Days against Fort Lewis College. The Yellow Jackets are coming off their first home-opener victory since 2009 after defeating South Dakota Mines 42-30 last Saturday to bring the Homestake Trophy back to Black Hills State. In the contest, Ward Anderson tossed for a career-best 412 yards and five touchdowns. Luke Whalen secured three of those touchdowns while Phydell Paris ran for 90 yards and a touchdown while being on the receiving end of 92 yards and another touchdown.

Last Meeting: The Yellow Jackets had a come-from-behind 17-14 victory on Nov. 16, 2013 in Durango, Colorado. Black Hills State fell behind 14-10 before scoring 17-unanswered points led by an 83-yard interception returned for a touchdown from Brian Baldwin. BHSU then used a 15-play 80-yard drive to set up Harrison Dollins with the game-tying touchdown. The game-winning field goal came with six minutes left in the game as Christian Parr kicked a 34 yarder for the victory.

About Fort Lewis College: The Skyhawks enter Lyle Hare Stadium with a 1-1 record, falling to UC-Davis in its season opener and defeating Oklahoma Panhandle State 45-38 last weekend. FLC is led offensively by Jordan Doyle, averaging 294.5 yards passing per game with three touchdowns. On the ground, Doyle is the team’s leading rusher at 58.5 yards per game. Andrew Johnson is his favorite target with 11 catches for 177 yards and two touchdowns. Defensively, Jake Faust leads the team with 15 tackles, but none for a loss.

• The Yellow Jackets are nationally ranked in several categories with Luke Whlaen leading the way ranking fifth in the nation with three touchdown receptions. Anthony Ebeoreime is ranked 24th with 218 receiving yards. Ward Anderson is ranked 22nd with five touchdown passes and 26th with 544 total yards passing.

• The 10 points scored against Montana State were the most points an NCAA Division II school had scored against the Bobcats since the 2010 season. MSU plays one D2 school a year.

• Quarterback Ward Anderson was the do-itall guy last year, leading the team in passing with 2,808 yards and rushing with 479 yards.

GENERAL NOTEBOOK Home Sweet Home: With last Saturday’s win over South Dakota Mines, the Yellow Jackets won its second-consecutive game at Lyle Hare Stadium after closing out last season with a threeovertime thriller against Western State.

• Anderson has his three of his four favorite targets returning in Luke Whalen, Jerome Krysl and Alex Anderson. Whalen led the team with 56 receptions, a number that ranked sixth in the RMAC. Krysl caught 30 passes while Anderson had 26 receptions.

Home Sweet ‘Home’stake: The Yellow Jackets brought the Homestake Trophy back to Black Hills State with its 42-30 victory over South Dakota Mines. After a one-year absence, the trophy resides back at BHSU. Through 129 meetings, the two schools have played nearly .500 football as the Yellow Jackets are 58-60-11 against the Hardrockers.

• Anderson should be well protected in the pocket as the offensive line has two seniors, two juniors and a sophomore listed as the starters.

On a Roll: After dropping its first seven games last season, the Yellow Jackets have now won three of its last four games and four of their last six, dating back to a 48-45 victory over New Mexico Highlands on Nov. 2.

The Prediction: Black Hills State was chosen 10th in the preseason coaches poll that favored CSU-Pueblo followed by Chadron State Returning All-RMAC: The Yellow Jackets return two Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference All-Conference members to the 2014 squad. Third team selections Luke Whalen and Trent Boner will all wear the Green and Gold.

Finding the Fountain of Youth: The Yellow Jackets feature 25 players on the two-deep that are sophomores or younger. That number includes nine members that are either redshirt freshmen or true freshmen.

DEFENSIVE NOTEBOOK • Michael Oberle ranks seventh in the RMAC with 16 total tackles, 11 of which have been solo.

• Freshman Allan Stubbs ranks fifth in the RMAC with three pass breakups while Brian Baldwin and Travis Tweeten rank ninth with two apiece.

• Michael Oberle led all Yellow Jackets with seven tackles at Montana State. All seven were unassisted tackles.

• Steven Soderstrom got to Montana State quarterback Dakota Prukop for the first sack of the season.

• Third-Team All-RMAC performer Trent Boner was the team’s leader with 137 tackles a year ago. He led the squad in each solo (64) and assisted (73) tackles. His 137 tackles ranked second in the RMAC.

• The special teams depth chart is on the young side for the Yellow Jackets. True freshmen Trevor Naslund and Diego Carstens earned the nod in the kicking game while freshman Erick Hairston-Belcher and Allan Stubbs earned the nods as the return men.

• Black Hills State led the RMAC a season ago with a 91.7 percent (11-12) conversion rate on field goals.

• A season ago, the Yellow Jackets ranked second in the RMAC netting 38.1 yards per punt.

Around the RMAC • Jordan Doyle (Fort Lewis, QB) orchestrated a 21-point comeback on the road to lead the SKyhawks to a 45-38 win at Oklahoma Panhandle State. In the fourth quarter alone, Doyle scored touchdowns on runs of 17 and 33 yards and passed a 38-TD to Esley Simmons for the game-winning score. He led the Skyhawks rushing game with 86 yards and three scores and completed 25 passes for 373 yards and two scores without an interception.

• Greg O’Donnell (CSU-Pueblo, K) totaled 17 points at Sam Houston State as the ThunderWolves won 47-21. He went 5-for-5 on extra points and 4-of-5 in field foal attempts, which includes a long of 46 yards.

Yellow Jackets John Reiners

C

oach John Reiners enters his third season as the Black Hills State head football coach and 21st overall as a coach. He spent his first three season at BHSU as offensive coordinator and the recruiting coordinator from 2009-2011.

The 2013 season saw the Yellow Jackets go 3-8 (3-6 RMAC) after closing the season with wins at Fort Lewis and at home against Western State. The final game of the season, against Western State, was a shootout with the Yellow Jackets putting up a season-high 50 points with 476 yards of total offense.

The offensive line was impressive, allowing the second-fewest sacks in the league at just 17 and the lowest amount of yards lost per sack. The Yellow Jackets also committed the least amount of penalties in the RMAC. In his first season as the Jackets’ head coach, Reiners led the team to a 4-7 (3-6 RMAC) record at season’s end after closing out the season with a three-game win streak where Reiners’ squad averaged 31.3 points per game and gave up a mere 10.3 points per game defensively on way to outscoring their opponents 94-31 in that stretch.

The momentum from a strong end to his debut season carried over to the recruiting trail as Reiners brought in a freshman class of over 35 players from seven different states including California and Florida. Under Reiners’ watch, the Jackets were the least penalized team in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference in 2012 and his BHSU team raised their GPA by one-half percent.

In his first season as offensive coordinator, the Yellow Jackets led the Dakota Athletic Conference in rushing and in the last two years he has coached eight first-team All-Conference selections and nine second-team AllConference selections. Reiners helped set the foundation for his current team four seasons ago and has spent the last 18 seasons as an assistant coach prior to BHSU. Reiners was head track and field coach for 11 seasons at Chadron St. Under his guidance, the Eagles set 60 new school records and earned All-American honors 34 times. His track & field teams had the highest GPA among all NCAA Division II teams (3.35 men) in the 2007, according to the U.S Track and Field Coaches Association.

At CSC, he was very active on the academic side of things as he spent the first three years as an Academic Coordinator and implemented the Academic Gameplan Program (AGP), a program that promoted and guided student-athletes to successful academic work. Standouts that Reiners coached at CSC include current San Diego Charger and Harlon Hill Award winner in the 2006-07 season, Danny Woodhead, from 2004-07. He also coached tight-end Jess Clarke in 1999.

• Head Track and Field Reiners is a graduate of Republican Valley High School at Indianola, Neb., where he was a football standout and Coach at CSC for 11 years won the Class C 800 meter run at the Nebraska State High School Track & Field Meet as a senior with a time of 1:56.69. Reiners earned one letter in track at Chadron State as a freshman before focusing on football full-time.

He went on to letter four years in football for the Eagles as wide receiver. Reiners earned a bachelor’s and a master’s degree from CSC in 1995 and 1997, respectively.

• Coached two-time Harlon Hill Trophy winner Danny John is married to the former Jennifer Vasey, a native of Laramie, Wyoming, who is one of Chadron State’s all- Woodhead (2006 & 2007) at time great volleyball players and was inducted to the CSC Hall of Fame in 2010. Together they have one son CSC Dylan and three daughters Ashtyn, Addi, and Kali.
