Thoughts From R&W...

••••••••••••••••••••••••• Dear R&W Members and Readers, We’re embarking on an exciting new path this year with R&W! I’m delighted with the new products (like this online magazine), services (like our new online logo store for business cards and merchandise) and our new website (fedesp.com). 2014 is a year of positive changes for R&W as we strive to make our employee association stronger and more in line with what the NIH community needs.

I’m especially excited about our new magazine, R&W Magazine. This is the inaugural issue! I see it as a wonderful way to keep in touch with our community - both the NIH community as well as our geographic region. One of the missions of R&W is to focus on the welfare and recreation opportunities for our members. I hope that by highlighting interesting travel spots, new restaurants, and adventurous things to do in our local area as well as promoting the great opportunities the NIH Clubs and Organizations have for us, we’ll accomplish our mission! In this issue, we’ll find out what the NIH Sailing Club is all about as well as discover some wonderfully unique destinations in our own backyard! I look forward to your feedback about the changes within R&W this year. As always, we’d like to find out what we can do to improve the organization. Thank you for being a part of R&W!

A Day Trip Back in Time... June/July 2014 | Recreation & Welfare

Mount Vernon is an American landmark and an enduring reminder of the life and legacy of the Father of Our Country. What was once an active plantation is now one of the nation’s most visited historic sites. Combining an iconic and authentic 18th-century home, beautiful gardens and grounds, intriguing museum galleries, immersive exhibits and programs, and first-rate dining and shopping, Mount Vernon is an incomparable national treasure. Located just 16 miles south of Washington, D.C. and 8 miles south of Old Town Alexandria, Virginia, the plantation rests on the banks of the Potomac River. Visitors are invited to tour the Mansion house and more than a dozen outbuildings including the slave quarters, kitchen, stables, and greenhouse. The Mansion’s “New Room”, the largest and grandest room in George Washington’s Mansion, has taken on a new appearance and a new interpretation. To celebrate the grand re-opening and reinterpretation of the room, Mount Vernon will display, for the first time in more than 200 years, twenty of the twenty-one pictures that were believed to hang in the space during Washington’s lifetime—including fourteen original Washington-owned works. Stroll four different gardens, hike the Forest Trail, and explore the George Washington: Pioneer Farmer site, a four-acre working farm that includes a re-creation of Washington’s 16-sided treading barn. George Washington cultivated gardens for necessity, pleasure, experimentation, fruit, and ornamental plants. He cared deeply about the appearance of his gardens and hired professional gardeners whom he insisted provide him with weekly reports of their activities. The gardens provided food for the table and pleasure to the eye. Eighteenth-century visitors to Mount Vernon were delighted by the bountiful offerings of fresh vegetables, fruits, and berries at the evening meal. During their strolls of the estate they admired flowers, roses, shrubs,

and exotics planted for their viewing pleasure. Foreign governments, friends, admirers, and even strangers sent Washington seeds, bulbs, and cuttings from all over the world. The gardens at Mount Vernon proved to be a culinary success as well as aesthetically pleasing; as one visitor remarked, they were “wonderful in appearance, exquisite in their perfume and delightful to the eye...” Visitors are introduced to the real George Washington in the Ford Orientation Center and Donald W. Reynolds Museum and Education Center These facilities include 25 galleries and theaters, more than 700 artifacts, and interactive displays. The most famous dentures in the world are on permanent display, along with three life-size models of Washington created from a forensic investigation. Visitors learn about Washington’s exceptional life and accomplishments through interactive displays, a major movie, short films produced by The History Channel, and high-tech, immersive experiences. Three life-size models created by a team of artists and forensic and computer experts depict Washington as never before seen at three significant stages of his life – including as a land surveying teenager – which dispel the elder statesman icon and encourage people to think about Washington in a new way: an incomparable American hero who evolved from a young man of modest means into this country’s greatest president. A rich and comprehensive collection of objects introduce Washington’s world in the Donald W. Reynolds Museum. Visitors get an unprecedented look at furnishings, china, silver, clothing, jewelry, Revolutionary War artifacts, rare books and manuscripts, and other personal effects 10

of the Washington family. Mount Vernon invites visitors to explore George Washington’s design for the grounds of his estate, through a new exhibition, Gardens & Groves: George Washington’s Landscape at Mount Vernon through January 2016. Gardens & Groves is the first museum exhibition to focus specifically on Washington’s landmark achievements as a landscape designer combining rarely-seen original documents, artworks, and books with period garden tools, gorgeous landscape photography, and a stunning scale model of the Mount Vernon estate. In Gardens & Groves, visitors can view the first president’s spyglass, watering can, and garden roller, in addition to reading Washington’s notes and instructions for Mount Vernon’s landscape in his own hand. George Washington died in the Mansion’s master bedchamber on December 14, 1799. His will directed that he be buried on his beloved estate. He also chose a site for a new brick tomb to replace the original burial vault, which was deteriorating. The Tomb was completed in 1831, and the remains of Washington, his wife, Martha, and other family members were moved there. A memorial honoring the slaves who lived and worked at Mount Vernon marks their burial ground. Located 50 yards from the Tomb, this was the cemetery for slaves and free blacks who worked at Mount Vernon during the 1700s and first half of the 1800s. Because the graves were unmarked, the identities and numbers of those interred there are largely unknown. Reflect on the historical significance and impact of slavery while viewing the memorial, which was dedicated in 1983. Washington was also a successful business entrepreneur and innovative farmer. Three miles from his home visitors can tour his Distillery and Gristmill. At the Distillery, visitors will be able to see costumed distillers operating five copper stills, stirring mash tubs, and managing the boiler as they demonstrate 18th-century distilling. The two-story building also features a storage cellar with barrels, an office, and two bedrooms where the site manager and assistant would have lived. The Distillery and adjacent Gristmill are open April – October 31, with costumed distillers and millers operating the fascinating water-powered machinery in both buildings 10 a.m. – 5 p.m. Mount Vernon is owned and operated by the Mount Vernon Ladies’ Association, America’s oldest national preservation organization, founded in 1853. Admission fees, restaurant and retail proceeds, along with private donations, support the operation and restoration of Mount Vernon.

Admission Estate admission: $18 adults; $17 seniors; $14 active military (ID required), $9 children (6-11); free for children 5 & under. Hours: Hours vary seasonally. Visit www.MountVernon.org for more details. Address: South end of the George Washington Memorial Parkway. Free parking. Public information: 703-780-2000

Destination Commemoration of the Civil War’s 150th anniversary continues this year, and area residents have a number of places close by which were important in the war. For example, the first casualties of the Civil War occurred in Baltimore on April 19, 1861. The Baltimore Riot, or Pratt Street Riot, occurred when a mob Confederate sympathizers attacked troops from the 6th Massachusetts Militia en route to Washington. The troops were marching between train stations when they were attacked. Four of the militia were killed, along with 12 members of the mob, before the troops were finally able to make it to Camdem Station. Many of the greatest battlefields of the war, including Manassas (or, alternatively, Bull Run), Antietam (also known as Sharpsburg), and Gettysburg, are within driving distance of Washington. You can even take the Metro to visit the site of one skirmish. A note on the names of Civil War battlefields: Many sites have two names, as the Union forces and and those of the Confederacy took a different approach to how the battlefields were named. It is believed that Bull Run: The ruins of the Stone Bridge, taken in March, 1862, by G.N. Bernard. the Union soldiers, being more urbanized than their Southern counterparts, were struck by the countryside and natural features in the south, and gave names to battle sites relating to a geographic feature such as a nearby stream or hill. Southerners, used to the countryside, tended to name battlefields after a nearby man-made structure or the name of the closest town. The Battle of Manassas, or Bull Run, as it is known in Northern circles, was the war’s first great battle. There 12

While many in the Union believed the first would be a quick decisive victory, it was an ominous harbinger of what was to come. Manassas is a short drive from D.C. To get there, simply take I-66 east, exit 47B, route 234 North (Sudley Rd.) The hours for the park are from dawn to dusk. The Henry Hill Visitor Center is open every day except for Thanksgiving and Christmas, the hours are from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. To see exhibits and experience audio-visual programs regarding the Second Battle of Manassas, visit the Brawner Farm Interpretive Center, open daily from 9 to 5. The fee for the park is $3. The Battle of Gettysburg gave the Union forces a crucial victory, and served as the inspiration for one of the most powerful speeches in our history. There were also 51,000 casualties. June/July 2014 | Recreation & Welfare

Gettysburg is about two hours from Washington. Take I-270 North to US-15 North in Frederick. Take 15 North into Gettysburg. Signs near the exit at Rt. 97 will direct you to the National Park Center and Visitor Museum. The Visitor Center is open from 8 to 6 from April 1 through the end of September, and 8 to 5 from October through March. The fee for the Museum and Visitor Center is $12.50 for adults (age 13 and up), $11.50 for seniors, and $8.50 for youth (six to 12 years old). Children are free. The bloodiest single day of the conflict took place on September 17, 1862, at Antietam, also know as Sharpsburg. After 12 hours of fightAntietam: Confederate dead at Bloody Lane, looking northeast from the south bank. The group of Union soldiers looking on were likely members of the 130th ing, the number of missing, Pennsylvania, who were assigned burial detail on the 19th. wounded or dead reached 23,000. The battlefield is only seventy miles from Washington. To get there, take Interstate 70 west to exit 29, then onto Route 65 south to Sharpsburg. Travel about ten miles to the Park Visitor Center entrance, on the left. Park grounds are open during daylight hours, the Visitor Center from 9 to 5, except for Christmas, Thanksgiving, and New Year’s Day. A three-day pass for adults over 16 is $4 (fifteen and younger free), a family pass is $6. Don’t feel like driving to take in some history? That’s okay, just take the Metro. Sail Away with the NIH Sailing Club

The Chesapeake Bay is perhaps the finest cruising body of water in the eastern United States. With over 7000 miles of shoreline, fascinating wildlife, from ospreys and great blue herons to majestic bald eagles, it offers a lifetime of sailing memories. With its rich history going back to the 17th century settlers of Tangier Island from Cornwall, who still retain an Elizabethan accent, to the United States Naval Academy in the charming 18th century city of Annapolis, the bay offers something for everyone. Situated in a sheltered corner of Selby Bay, just off the South River, the Selby Bay Sailing Center is the home of the NIH Sailing Association (NIHSA) fleet of Flying Scots. These 19’ centerboard fiberglass sloops are both rugged enough for the bay and great boats if you want to learn to sail. They have remained popular daysailers since Sandy Douglass first introduced the design in the mid-fifties, and hull number 1 is still actively racing! The NIHSA Club traces its origins to a group of cruising sailors who would rendezvous on weekends on their boats in creeks all over the Chesapeake. In 1964, they decided to formally charter what is now the NIHSA, and began gathering for monthly meetings on campus, usually with a featured guest speaker. In 1969 they bought their first Flying Scot. The new boat was named ‘Antisha’, a rearrangement of letters from the National Institutes of Health. Over the years, the fleet has previously been located in Back Creek, Oyster Bay, and the Rhode River, and has expanded to the current fleet of 5 boats. Although the original focus was on cruising big boats, a racing program also formed early on and has steadily matured into a centerpiece of club activity. In addition, the

club holds regular social events, hosted by volunteer members in their homes, open houses, crab feasts, day sails (an excellent way for new sailors to get experience by sailing with others), and, of course, parties. The club has about 200 sailing members of all age groups, from all over NIH, FDA, and NOAA. Many friendships have formed over the years! NIHSA is open to NIH and NOAA employees and fellows. All memberships require R&W membership for the current year. A full membership is $40 per year. Before chartering one of the Flying Scots, members may either take a basic training course or, if the prospective club member is an experienced and competent sailor, they can demonstrate such competence in a comprehensive check-out sail. The club offers basic training classes for new sailors, which include classroom training and three practice sails on the flying scots. For advanced sailors, training events such as spinnaker courses or racing classes are being offered each summer on a more irregular basis. The boats are cared for by members of the club, providing many opportunities for club members to learn about boat construction and maintenance. The basic sailing course is offered biannually, with sessions starting in April, and then again in July, at a cost of $230. Six evening classroom sessions are followed up with a Saturday orientation at the Selby Bay Sailing Center, and then three training sessions in the Flying Scots. Experienced sailors can request a check-out sail from the Check-Out Chairperson to get access to chartering the Flying Scots. Thomas Point Light is just a short sail away from Selby Bay! Chartering the Flying Scots is done online, and is available to current-year Full or Associate members. The costs for chartering one of the boats ranges from $10 for a weekday morning to $20 for a half-day during the weekends and on holidays. Once the new member gets their sea legs, it’s time for some fun. The Club holds monthly club regattas, which are an excellent way to learn about the whole process of sailing, from getting the boat prepared, reading conditions (wind and waves!) and how to either win or lose with class and grace. Sailors of all levels can par18

ticipate in the regattas – for those just learning to sail, assisting the committee in running the regatta offers the opportunity to learn from the best. For sailors who are cleared to check out the Scots, crewing or skippering in the regatta is a great way to get into the competitive sailing spirit, and to test one’s sailing skills! The regatta series culminates in October with The Hot Shot Regatta, the club championship. The club also organizes cruises lasting from two to four days on the bay, in boats ranging from 25 to 40 feet. The cruises take place over the long weekends during the warmer months, as well as the long weekend for Veteran’s Day in November. “Big Boat Experience” weekends are held yearly in the spring - an excellent opportunity for new sailors to get an introduction to cruising on the Chesapeake. The weekend cruises and the Big Boat Experience usually include a night on anchor in one of the many beautiful secluded coves of the Eastern shore. After setting anchor, crews of several boats mingle; appetizers, pirate and science stories are packed out. Have you ever had a breakfast while watching bald eagles? Or while watching a herd of deer going for a morning swim? For those with doubts about whether they might be any good at sailing, remember the words of Ralph Waldo Emerson, “The wonder is always new that any sane man can be a sailor.” If you would like to know more about NIHSA, and how to get involved in sailing, please visit their website, www.nihsail.org

A Vacation to Remember:

Mohonk Mountain

Majestically perched on the Shawangunk Mountain Ridge in the Hudson River Valley is Mohonk Mountain House, a Victorian castle sitting on 1,325 acres of pure wilderness. The resort is located near New Paltz, New York, about 90 miles north of New York City. It was built by twin brothers Albert and Alfred Smiley between 1869 and 1910. The Smiley brothers envisioned a sanctuary where guests could both relax and take in the beauty of nature. They succeeded in spectacular fashion. Mohonk Mountain House was declared a National Historic Landmark in 1986. This year, the resort celebrates its 145-year anniversary. As part of the celebration, the resort features special events, treats, and deals that take the Mohonk Mountain House experience to an even higher level. Land Stewardship and The Environment Faithful stewardship of the land has been a guiding principle of the Smiley family, who have owned and operated Mohonk Mountain House from its beginning. The property adjoins the Mohonk Preserve, which was created in 1963 when the Smiley family transferred 5,300 acres to the Mohonk Trust. The purpose of the trust was to protect the Shawangunk Ridge. The Smiley family and the Mohonk Mountain House staff were recognized on the 125-year anniversary of the resort by the United Nations Environment Programme, “for generations of dedicated leadership and commitment to the protection and enhancement of the environment and for their inestimable contribution to the cause of peace, justice, and sustainable human development. The Open Space Institute also honored this commitment to land preservation and environmental education in October of 2011. Additionally, the International Audubon Society has awarded the Mohonk Golf Course with the Cooperative Sanctuary Award for environmental-friendly practices, and Mohonk Mountain House provides a regional headquarters for the Student Conservation Association. In 1980, the late A. Keith Smiley founded Mohonk Consultations, Inc., a charitable organization. Mohonk Consultations, Inc. sponsors conferences at Mohonk Mountain House as part of its ongoing mission to raise awareness and understanding of local and global ecological systems. Mohonk Mountain House uses a comprehensive composting plan, energy efficient light bulbs, an Integrated Pest Management program to reduce pesticide use, and an environmentally friendly wastewater treatment plant.

While You Are There The breathtaking beauty of the resort provides a stunning background for a wide variety of activities. These activities include hiking and nature walks along 85 miles of trails, accompanied by a naturalist or a staff guide. There is also a mountain bike track, and trails for horseback riding, as well as rock-climbing. Lake Mohonk provides a natural venue for swimming, fishing, boating, and canoeing. Swimmers can also enjoy the resort’s indoor heated pool when the temperature dips. The resort also offers yoga, meditation, and fitness classes. Bring your clubs to play on Mohonk’s historic 9-hole golf course, or play 18 holes of disc golf. The resort features tennis courts, as well. You can also take in the history of the Mohonk Mountain House via a guided tour of the Barn Museum. A great way to experience the beauty of the grounds is through a horse-drawn carriage ride. And, no trip to Mohonk Mountain Resort would be complete without a stroll through Mohonk’s award-winning gardens. In keeping with its mission of relaxation, the resort abounds in areas ripe for tranquil reflection. The appearance of Old Man Winter is simply an opportunity for skating in the Outdoor Ice-Skating Pavilion. Wintertime activities also include snowshoeing and cross-country skiing. The Spa Conde Nast Traveler ranked the Spa at Mohonk Mountain the #1 spa in the United States, while Travel + Leisure ranked the Spa number 6 in the world. The Spa, with over 30,000 square feet of space, offers 16 treatment rooms. It has an outdoor heated mineral pool, features a “green roof ” and a geo-thermal heating system. After a rejuvenating treatment, you can relax in the solarium next to a grand stone fireplace. As part of the 145-year anniversary, the Spa is offering the “Timeless Traditions” massage. This stress-buster honors the history of massage, combining four traditional strokes with deep stretching techniques from the 1800s. Combined with the elixir of birch oil, the “Timeless Tradition” technique will leave you with a lasting feeling of utter relaxation and deep-seated content. 26

For the Kids Mohonk Mountain Resort also has plenty to offer the children during your stay. One example is the Junior Naturalist Experience. Created by staff naturalists, this program is part of the Mohonk Kids’ Club, and serves to expose children to the natural world around us, via environmentally friendly, hands-on activities. Travel + Leisure named the Mohonk Mountain Kids’ Club one of the Best Hotel Kids’ Programs. Festival of The Arts Mohonk Mountain House features over 40 theme programs, presented annually, including culinary classes, gardening workshops, music festivals, and nature programs. The Festival of The Arts runs for eight weeks, from July 6 through August 22 and includes music, drama, and dance performances. Some of the talent scheduled to perform this year include the Grammy-nominated folk rock/duo Trout Fishing In America, Syncopated City Dance Company, humorous readings from Dick Cavett and John Cunningham, and a performance from the incomparable Natalie Merchant of 10,000 Maniacs. Food Overnight guests at the resort are served breakfast, lunch, and dinner, along with afternoon tea and cookies, all included. In keeping with Mohonk Mountain House’s commitment to the environment, the nearby Brook Farm Project grows vegetables that supply the resort with farm-to-table produce. As part of the year-long celebration, the Mohonk Mountain House chefs have created “heirloom menu items” that hark back to the cuisine served in 1869. As a special treat, a “Toast to Traditions” pomegranate champagne cocktail is available in the Carriage Lounge. Deals This year, as part of the celebration, Mohonk Mountain House is offering up to 20% off its rate. Additionally, solo travelers can take advantage of a special mid-week rate. Should you visit Mohonk Mountain House, you will join a guest list that includes John D. Rockefeller, Andrew Carnegie, presidents Theodore Roosevelt, Rutherford B. Hayes, Chester Arthur, and Bill Clinton. With 259 guest rooms, including 28 tower rooms, and activities for the whole family, you will see why USA Magazine, Conde Nast Traveler, and Travel + Leisure have consistently ranked the Mohonk Mountain House as a one of the best places to stay, for relaxation, rejuvenation, and appreciation of the beauty of our natural world.
