Thoughts From R&W... ••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••

Dear R&W Members and Readers, As we approach the fun-filled but crazy busy Holiday season, I’m very aware of how the Holiday season can put an extra burden on our health, both physically and mentally. That’s why this issue, our first Holiday issue, is devoted to activities invigorating and unique - that will get your mind

Randy Schools President, R&W

focused on the season and your blood flowing! You can find ways to trot, jingle, skate and fry turkey in this issue. My good friend shared his coveted fried turkey recipe on pages 18-19. Start a new tradition with your family and friends this season with good ole southern turkey fry to start your Thanksgiving Day! And, did you know that you could ice skate outside at the National Gallery of Art? What a beautiful and incredible venue right in our back yard! See pages 8-9 for all the skating opportunities in our area. A successful employee is one who also appreciates life! I hope you find lots of reasons to appreciate what’s in your life this Holiday season. I thank you for supporting R&W and wish you a very Happy

Healthy

Holidays Make For

Happy

Holidays

6 November/December 2014 | Recreation & Welfare

The holiday season is a time for family, friends, and cheer. It can also be a time when you run around like the proverbial chicken-with-his-headcut-off, what with all the parties, shopping, and travel. You may find yourself feeling run down and drained, leaving you vulnerable to illness. There is also the food factor. The holidays present gastro temptations not normally encountered during the rest of the year. If you want to navigate your way through the season with your health, sanity, and waistline intact, here are some ideas about how to avoid the pitfalls of the most wonderful time of the year. Don’t blow off your workout. Yes, there is a lot to do, and you don’t want to miss out. But don’t let your body suffer as a result. If you have to, workout in the morning before work or in the evening afterward, even if that deviates from your established regimen. Even if you can’t get your full workout in, just do three-quarters or half of it. Fifteen minutes on the elliptical machine is still better than zero minutes. Maybe you just can’t make it to the gym - you have to go shopping. That’s okay. Find a parking spot at the outer edge and take a nice long walk. Or walk the mall. Bypass the elevator and take the stairs instead. Get the flu vaccine. Take care of it early in the season. As we move deeper into December, you may have more activities planned and less time to take care of this important step. Get it

over and done with before your plate is full. Mind the germs. Wash your hands frequently, especially if you have been to a place with a great deal of human traffic, such as the mall or the grocery store. You can also get into the habit of traveling with a bottle of hand sanitizer for those times when getting to the washroom may be inconvenient. Keep water close at hand. Staying hydrated is always good practice, even more so during the holidays. With all the running about, it’s easy to neglect this basic need. Get into the habit of having an extra in the purse, briefcase or bag. Relax. Stress can leave you vulnerable to illness, and can also turn you into the Grinch. If you have a stretch of time when you know you are going to be super-busy, why not schedule a trip to the spa for a nice massage? Your body will thank you. If you can’t make it to a spa, just take a few minutes for some meditation. Ten or fifteen minutes of deep breathing and you will be ready for action with laser-focus. Have a party plan. The holidays are a time for gatherings and celebration, which means plenty of food and drink. One trick you can use to prevent an expanding waistline is to chew some gum about fifteen before you eat. Have an idea of how long you are going to stay at a party and stick with it. Eat a small portion of what is offered, and stick to the healthier

offerings. A sweet or two is fine; make it up by going the extra mile in your workout. Should you choose to imbibe during the holiday season, keep to a two-drink maximum, with a glass of water in between. Eat first; having an adult beverage on an empty stomach can lead to blood-sugar issues, and maybe a lampshade on your head at the end of the night (you don’t want to be that guy). Snack healthy. If you have a lot to do, plan ahead. During the holidays, it’s so easy to get really busy, neglect to eat, and then the next thing you know you are just “grabbing something quick,” which may lead to that slippery slope of love handles or a seasonal gut. Throw some carrot sticks or celery in a bag to munch on while you go on a quest for the perfect gift. Rest ye merry gentle people. Getting run down during the holiday leaves you vulnerable. Keep a schedule and stick with it. You may be having a blast at the party, but missing the last hour of a bash for some sleep will do you a world of good. Plan some rest time, and don’t be afraid to sleep in a little on the weekend. If, after the last present has been unwrapped, the tree has found its way into the nearby ravine, and all of the lights have been unstrung, you find that you have added a pound or two, don’t worry too much about it. Just go into your workouts with a little extra gusto to ensure a healthy and happy 2015.

Deck the Halls! Decorating for the holidays turns the house into a seasonal wonderland. Taking the boxes from the attic, unpacking them, and going through all of the decorations, it’s like being reunited with old friends. If you are looking to update or change your holiday decor, one thing you can do is to go out and see what some of your neighbors have hanging from their houses. Here are a few places to visit to get into the Christmas decorating spirit. The White House - Regardless of which party currently calls 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue home, the residence of our Chief Executive is a sight to behold this time of the year. If you have an interest in a tour, there are new security protocols in place. To get a place in line, prospective visitors are required to write to their Congressman and get them to arrange a specific time and date for the visit. There will be a wait to get in, but you will be getting a glimpse of our history. Another method is to take a tour of a group of homes dressed to the nines for the season.

And the Kitchens, and the Dining Rooms, and...

St. Albans House Tour - Friday, December 5 Saturday, December 6, 2014, 11 a.m. - 5 p.m. Friday, 10 - 4 Saturday. Local floral designers work their magic on five houses in Georgetown. There will be carols sung by St. Albans and National Cathedral students, a luncheon, and a holiday boutique. Tickets for the tour are $35, luncheon is $15. For more information, call (202) 537-9190 Alexandria Holiday Designer Tour of Home Saturday, December 6, 2014, 11 a.m. - 4 p.m. See five homes in Old Town, reworked by local interior designers and florists. $30 in advance, $35 same day. Meteorological winter begins December 1, and according to the Old Farmer’s Almanac, our neck of the woods is in for a colder-than-normal winter (and wetter, to boot). Staying cooped up can become a real drag as winter makes its painfully slow trudge to springtime. Sure, it’s a great time to catch up on some reading, visit the wonderful museums the region offers, or catch a movie. But staying indoors for extended periods can eventually lead to the

condition known as cabin fever. The walls begin to close in a little, as winter takes its toll on the psyche. In an effort to preserve your sanity, and to promote domestic harmony, make plans to get outside. You will need to bundle up, obviously. To keep warm, keep moving. One great way to get yourself outdoors during the winter and to get some exercise is to go ice skating. It’s an activity that the whole family can enjoy. Here are a few spots where you can lace ‘em up and get skating. (Unless otherwise noted, outdoor skating is available from mid-November through mid-March). Washington Harbour Ice Rink, 3000 K St. NW in Georgetown is the biggest outdoor ice skating facility in the region. At 11,800 square feet, it is even bigger than Rockefeller Center’s rink in New York City. It will be open every

day, including holidays, for recreational skaters. The cost is $10 for adults, $8 for children, members of the military, and seniors. Skate rental is $5. The facility is available for private events from 7:00pm to 9:00pm, Sunday through Wednesday. It is recommended that you contact them if you plan to skate during these times to verify that they are open. The telephone number is (202) 706-7666. If you are looking to add some art to the experience, try the National Gallery of Art Sculpture Garden Ice Rink. Located at 7th St. and Constitution Avenue, the venue features skating against a backdrop of sculptures from artists such as Roy Lichtenstein, Louise Bourgeois, Claes Oldenburg, Alexander Calder, and others. You can grab a bite to eat or warm up with a hot beverage at the Pavilion Cafe. Admission is $7 for adults, $6 for children and seniors. Skate rental is $3. Canal Park Ice Rink is a new facility located in the Capital Waterfront Park, 2nd and M St., SE. Canal Park has learn to skate programs, and can

host birthday parties and special events. Admission is $8 for adults, $7 for children, seniors, and the military. Skate rental is $3. Silver Spring Ice Skating Rink at Veterans Plaza, 8523 Fenton St., is in the heart of Silver Spring, nestled in amongst nearby shops and restaurants. You can take lessons there, and it is available to rent for your holiday function. Admission is $8 for adults, $7 for children, seniors, and the military. Skate rental is $3. Bethesda Metro Center Ice Center, 3 Bethesda Metro Center, offers the convenience of ice skating right near a metro stop. The phone number is (301) 656-0588. Montgomery County’s largest rink is located in Rockville Town Square, 200 E. Middle Lane, Rockville. Lesson, party rentals, you betcha. Admission is $8 (13 years and older), $7 for children 12 years and younger. Skate rental is $3. And finally, in Gaithersburg, Kentlands Community Skate, located at 202 Marketplace West, offers seasonal skating, as well.

Tots, Trots, and Jingle Bell Runs: 3 Ways To Enhance the Holidays During this joyous time of the year, it is important to keep in mind that gravy and pecan pie can make for a rotund holiday. It’s also important to help out whomever we can. With these truths in mind, here are three ways to have fun and embrace the holiday season: Turkey Trots: There are a number of these run/ walk events in the D.C. Metro area. If there was ever a time for a run or a nice, long walk, this is it. Rachel Cooper, Washington, DC Expert for About.Com, notes the following events: Thanksgiving Day Trot For Hunger - Event takes place November 27th at 8:30am beginning at 13th St., NW and 12th St., NW (Freedom Plaza). A 5K Fun Run and Family Walk, benefitting programs for the homeless. Sponsored by SOME (So Others May Eat). Cranberry Crawl 5K/10K Run and Race Walk - November 22, 7:50am, East Potomac Park Golf Course, 972 Ohio Drive SW, Washington, DC; This annual event is sponsored by The Potomac Valley Track Club; For more information, (703) 481-3530. Turkey Chase Bethesda - Chevy Chase YMCA November 27, 8:30am, 9401 Old Georgetown Rd., Bethesda, MD. 10K Race and 2 mile Fun Run. This event, celebrated for the past 25 years, supports the YMCA’s Youth and Family Services, YMCA Bethesda Chevy-Chase, and the Bethesda-Chevy Chase Rotary Club. Jingle Bell Runs Run, Run Rudolph! You’ve probably heard this one already if you have 18 November/December 2014 | Recreation & Welfare

visited the mall recently. Can you believe they started cranking the Christmas music the day after Halloween? C’mon, man. Anyhow, the annual Jingle Bell Run/Walk to help in the fight against arthritis has events in the area during the month of December. Get a team together, sign up and have fun. Wearing of festive holiday attire is encouraged (think bells on your running shoes, an elfin hat, perhaps). 2014 Jingle Bell Run/Walk - Ellicott City, MD, Saturday, December 6th, 9:00am; Centennial Park, 10000 Maryland 108, Ellicott City, MD 21042 2014 Jingle Bell Run/Walk - Baltimore, MD, Sunday, December 14th, 9:00am; Du Burns Arena, Bovenga Field, 1301 S. Buying a car? Timing is everything! Brought to you by TrueCar ® and the NIH Federal Credit Union. When it comes to car shopping, timing is everything but figuring out the perfect time to make the purchase can be complicated. Consider the following tips to potentially save both time and money on your next purchase. Shop Early in the Week - Most consumers shop on weekends when dealerships are full. By avoiding the crowd, you can get the salesperson’s undivided attention. Make Your Offer Late in the Day - Salespeople wish to go home and may not want to spend hours negotiating a sale. If you’ve done your homework, know the exact car you want and ready to make a reasonable offer, showing up near closing time may save you time and money. Shop at the End of the Month or Quarter - Dealers and salespeople typically have goals they must meet to qualify for certain bonuses. So, this is a good time to go shopping to see if they’re hungry to make some real deals.

Get Deals on Outgoing Models - Manufacturers typically roll out new-model-year vehicles in late summer and fall as dealers are trying to make room for the new inventory. This can create a great deal of price flexibility as dealers often offer extra sales incentives on lingering models. Snag Year-End Savings - As the new year approaches, dealerships often try hard to meet year-end their quotas while salespeople are hoping to meet bigger holiday bonus levels. And, as newer models may be in greater supply, pricing may be more flexible. It’s a perfect combination for new car shoppers to get a great deal. Hassle-Free Car Buying - Do your research ahead of time and find what other people paid for a particular make and model of a new car in your area. This allows you to see what is a fair market price for the car you’re interested in purchasing. Get started by visit the NIH Federal Credit Union’s Car Buying Service, powered by TrueCar at nihfcu.org/auto or call 800.877.6440.

Talking Turkey! Fried Turkey, That Is

Y

ears ago, while I was a resident of Florida, I was invited to spend Thanksgiving at my Aunt Betty’s house in Delray Beach. My cousin Mark informed me that he would be deep frying a turkey. I had heard about this method of cooking a bird, but never had the opportunity to sample one. It was a great day at the house, and I spent some time observing my cousin in action. He had set up the fryer in the backyard and never left it until the turkey was done. When the victuals were served, I found that the deep fried turkey was delicious, and after the first round, I helped myself to seconds. Deep frying the turkey brought a zest and pizazz that conventional oven cooking simply could not touch. I talked to my cousin about how he was able to get the bird into 20 November/December 2014 | Recreation & Welfare

very, very careful.

such a delectable state. He stressed that cooking turkey in this manner did produce a mighty fine flavor, but if I was to ever try this myself, to be

Having to call the fire department can put a damper on the holiday season. If you want to take the culinary plunge and fry that bird up, here are a five safety tips for a safe Turkey Day: 1) Set up the fryer away from the house. You should keep the fryer at a minimum distance of ten feet. Do not set the fryer up in a garage, under a patio cover, on a wooden deck, or in any enclosed space. Keep the children and pets away from the fryer, and never leave it unattended.

2) Set up the fryer on flat ground. Should the fryer tip over, you will have (at best) a big mess to clean up, or perhaps a trip to the hospital. The turkey needs cook in even and steady oil. Most birds will require at least three gallons of oil; carefully gauge the amount. 3) Only cook a thawed, dry turkey. The reason for this is that any excess water will have the oil bubbling. Even a small amount of oil spilling onto the burner can lead to a conflagration. 4) Mind the temperature. Most recipes will call for a cooking temperature of 350° F. Keep in mind that most fryers will not have their own temperature gauge, so pay careful attention to the temperature of the oil. Both lid and handle can become quite hot; make sure you are equipped with well-insulated pot-holders or oven mitts. You should also wear long sleeves and safety goggles, as hot oil can splatter. 5) Prepare for the worst. It would also be a good idea to keep a fire extinguisher handy (dry-power, multipurpose). Have a Plan B for cooking the turkey. In the event of rain or snow, you are better off taking it indoors since water, when it hits the hot oil, can lead to fire.

Charlie’s Good Ole Southern Fried Turkey Rub Recipe (from Banner Elk, NC)

1 1/2 teaspoons Crushed Red Pepper 1 1/2 teaspoons Black Pepper 1/2 teaspoon Accent Seasoning Mix 1 1/2 teaspoons Chili Powder 1 1/2 teaspoons Garlic Powder 8 TABLESPOONS Salt 1 1/2 teaspoons of onion powder

Mix all of the ingredients. Rub onto the dry turkey one day prior. Use peanut oil; Sam’s club sells the 3 gallon jugs. Cook at 350 degrees for 3.5 minutes per pound. You will want to watch the temperature - it will creep up on you. Like I said, a 12lb turkey is ideal, but you don’t want to much over 13.

Stepping Up: The Washington Wizards T

here is a price to pay for being a successful team: higher expectations the next time out. For the Washington Wizards, it is time to find out if they can meet those expectations. The Wizards tip off October 29th against the Miami Heat, and the team is confident that they can live up to the hype. The team returns its dynamic backcourt of John Wall and Bradley Beal, but Beal will be out for some time as he recovers from wrist surgery. Glen Rice Jr. is expected to step in until Beal is healed. The Wizards lost Trevor Ariza during the off season, but coach Randy Wittman has a roster that now includes (likely) Hall of Famer Paul Pierce, the team’s most compelling acquisition. Pierce brings championship experience to a team optimistic it can achieve that goal. Pierce concedes that Washington was not high on his list as he entered free agency during the off season. “Washington wasn’t really on my radar,” he told the Washington Post. However, now-departed Wizards assistant coach Sam Cassell called with a pitch to bring the veteran to D.C. Cassell persisted, selling Pierce on the Washington backcourt of Wall and Beal. The 24 November/December 2014 | Recreation & Welfare

two eventually had further discussions over dinner. Shortly afterwards, Pierce met with team officials and stunned the basketball world, signing with the team. Ariza’s minutes won’t be completely absorbed by Pierce. Many of those minutes will likely be taken by Otto Porter, who bulked up during the off season. New faces also seeing playing time will include veterans Rasual Butler, DeJuan Blair and Kris Humphries. These players will add depth to the front court. The team’s nucleus from last year remains intact, with Nene, Marcin Gortat, Beal, Wall and the other players eager to improve on last year’s 44-win campaign. After years of frustration, Washington Wizards fans may finally have good reason to believe that they have a team that can contend for a title. “As a coach, you want to have those expectations,” Wittman said to Jorge Castillo of the Washington Post. “I’d much rather be sitting here talking about high expectations than when you so-called experts think we might win 15 or 16 games. It’s just another step.” For Wizards fans, this might just be the year the team takes a giant step in the right direction.

Rock the Red: The Washington Capitals T

he fall brings with it hockey, and the Washington Capitals are looking to turn things around. After missing out on a playoff berth last season, the team elected to go in a different direction, hiring a new coach. Barry Trotz, formerly with the Nashville Predators, takes over the reigns from the departed Adam Oates. There was trepidation on Trotz’s part when he took over. He was concerned that the Capitals did not have much talent-wise, beyond all-star Alex Ovechkin. “What I found here is that it’s even better,” he told ESPN. “That my perception was off a little bit. There’s a lot of good people here.” Trotz will try to find a way to match Ovechkin’s immense talent (he is the 6th fastest player to reach 400 goals in NHL history) with complementary parts. To shore up the defense, the team brought in two veteran defensemen from the Pittsburgh Penguins, Matt Niskanen and Brooks Orpik. Niskanen will also provide the Capitals with an additional offensive weapon. The two will join Mike Green,

Karl Alzner and others on defense. Braden Holtby will hold down the goal-tending duties. The early results have been positive. The team has a 4-2-2 record through eight games. During this early stretch, the Caps have met six of the NHL’s top 15 squads. They have more than held their own. The Capitals have also discovered a promising newcomer in center Andre Burakovsky. The rookie, 19, has seven points through eight games, while Ovechkin leads the team with five goals. Ovechkin and Trotz have something in common; neither has won the Stanley Cup and both seek the vindication that a title would bring. While Ovechkin has put up stellar numbers, he does not have any championships in Washington. Trotz was fired last season by the Predators, and has something to prove, as well. On January 1, 2015, the Capitals will play host to the annual Bridgestone NHL Winter Classic. The Capitals will take on the Chicago Blackhawks, winners of the 2013 Stanley Cup. The contest will be played outdoors at Nationals Park. Recreation & Welfare | November/December 2014 25

An R&W Club Feature

NIH’s

Camera Club By Vickie Allin

26 November/December 2014 | Recreation & Welfare

F

or over 50 years, the NIH Camera Club (www.nihcameraclub.com ) has been the place to learn about photography and have fun doing it. The club offers monthly meetings, competitions, field trips and workshops with experienced photographers to help member’s hone their expertise and to introduce them to new skills and techniques. Many members also express their pleasure in just being with and learning from other photographers in a relaxed and friendly atmosphere. A look the club’s award-winning newsletter, Cameraderie, will show the talent exhibited by club members and the activities the club sponsors. Over the years, many NIHers have brought their enthusiasm and skill to energize the club. One of the club’s early members was Dr. Tom Waldmann, who joined the club in 1965. Dr. Waldmann remembered that during one 20 year period, he was Color Slide Photographer of the Year for 19 of those 20 years! During this time, the club met on the NIH campus and membership was restricted to NIH employees and contractors. However, after the 1987 merger between the NIH and NOAA R&W Associations, the club decided to expand its membership. Dick Sprott, who was president of the NIHCC at the time, said that the club opened up in two stages: first to members from other government agencies; and then, in 2002 when the meeting location was moved off campus, to anyone who was interested. One of the outstanding features of the club had been its field trips. Another long-term member, John Boretos, planned field trips for 30+ years. He says 3-day weekends were ideal and up to 20 people would attend. He well remembers trips to the Blue Ridge Mountains and West Virginia for the fall colors. A favorite trip was to Dot Hartley’s Farm in Gettysburg, PA. The club went for the weekend, three years in a row. They stayed at the farmhouse and everyone slept on the floor. They would get up at 5 AM and take sunrise pictures of the nearby Gettysburg battlefield. John says one morning they were all standing on a hill

when the sun came up and Dick Sprott said to him, “John, you really planned this trip well. The only thing missing is three geese flying through the scene.” At that moment, three geese flew by! Click, click, click filled the air. Meetings and Competitions The club meets on the second Tuesday of every month from September through June. The meetings are held at the Five Star Premier Residence in Chevy Chase, just a short distance from the NIH Campus, except for December and June, when we hold our annual Christmas Party and End-of-Year Party. Those meetings are held at the Cedar Lane Unitarian Church in Bethesda. Five Star Premier Residence 8100 Connecticut Avenue Chevy Chase, Md. Cedar Lane Unitarian Church 9601 Cedar Lane Bethesda, Md. Regular meetings feature photography competitions. The competition topics vary and are a mixture of subjects (such as architecture, nature and photojournalism) and skills/techniques (such as panning, wide angle photography and various lighting conditions). There are three competition categories – Black & White (Monochrome) Prints, Color Prints and Digital Images. A beginner photographer doesn’t have to worry about competing against someone with more experience because there are two competition categories based on skill level and points earned. Competitions are anonymous and offer members an opportunity to get feedback on their work and suggestions for improvement. In the past, we also had a speaker at our monthly competitions but, in the interest of time, we decided to divide our competition, education components, and travel shows into three monthly events: Second Tuesday Competition Night Third Tuesday Travelogue Fourth Tuesday Education Night

One day workshops included How to Take Better Portraits, Macro and Closeup Photography and Taking Videos with your DSLR Camera.

Field Trips and Workshops The club is very lucky to have had members over the years who have organized a wide array of amazing photography field trips and workshops. These have ranged from one-day local field trips to weekend workshops to long trips in both the US and other countries. For example, this summer Dick and Margaret Sprott organized a 3-day workshop to Acadia National Park and Louise McLaughlin and Geoff Grant organized a 2-day field trip to the Back Roads Around Gettysburg, PA. Club member Saul Pleeter also gave a series of three classes this summer called Photography 101, to help beginning photographers become 28 November/December 2014 | Recreation & Welfare

Field trips, workshops, and travelogues will continue throughout the year. Last month, there was a field trip to the Rockville Auto Show, a travelogue on the Pantanal Wetlands of Brazil and several club members attended the Photographic Society of America conference in Albuquerque, New Mexico. In November, the club helps to sponsor the Nature Visions Photo Expo in Manassas, Va. There are also travelogues coming up on Nepal (November), Eastern Caribbean (January), Southeast Asia (February), and Galapagos (April). Everyone is welcome at our meetings. You do not have to be a club member until you are ready to enter our competitions. Many of our members attended several meetings to get a “taste of our club, before deciding to join. Restaurant Review: Mi rancho

by Brendan A. Dell

T ucked away in the heart of Silver Spring is Mi Rancho. This gem of a restaurant has

been serving up classic Tex Mex cuisine since 1990. Family owned, Mi Rancho offers great food in a fun, family-friendly atmosphere. I had previously visited Mi Casa in 1995, and, just like then, I was greeted warmly upon entering. The atmosphere is relaxed and casual. The restaurant has expanded since my last visit, providing a roomy, expansive dining area, in addition to a more intimate dining area inside the building. The lunch menu features Tex Mex favorites such as tacos, burritos, fajitas, enchiladas, and chimichangas, as well as seafood dishes and salads. For lunch, I selected the Cozumel Platter, consisting of pork ribs and fajitas (either chicken or beef). The ribs were done to perfection, and the chicken fajitas were excellent, as well. I also sampled the Camarones Al Espeton, which consists of jumbo grilled shrimp wrapped in bacon and jalapeños. This was also very good, and I look forward to future visits to explore the menu. The dinner menu includes a great selection of appetizers (“antojitos”), such as quesadillas, taquitos, ceviche, and tamales. Mi Rancho also features a full bar, with margaritas, beers, and wine available. Wednesdays feature the Humpday Happy Hour, with beers and new Margaritas to sample. Mi Rancho finds NFL action along with your favorites from the menu and bar. In addition to the Silver Spring location, Mi Rancho has locations in Rockville and Germantown. Open for lunch and dinner, the emphasis at Mi Rancho is on fresh ingredients for great taste, and they succeed.
