Do you really need RV insurance on your travel trailer?
As RVers, we know the allure of the open road and the freedom it offers. However, with freedom comes responsibility, including the important decision of securing insurance.
RV insurance is designed to cover various types of RVs, including travel trailers, toy haulers, motor homes, fth wheels, and camper vans. While liability insurance is not required for most travel trailers, having RV coverage could bene t you and your adventures.
• Protection against accidents: May provide nancial protection for repair costs, medical expenses, and liability in case of an accident.
• Coverage for theft and vandalism: Could help with repairs or replace your trailer with less out-of-pocket expenses if it’s lost or stolen.
• Natural disasters and weather events: May cover the cost of damage from storms, oods, or other natural disasters.
Is your travel trailer covered under your home or auto insurance?
While your home or auto policy can protect your trailer in certain instances, it can also leave you with gaps in your coverage.
*Available for RVs less than 6 years old, and a $250 deductible applies
insure your investment
For example, your auto policy may only cover your trailer while you’re on the road, not if you’re parked or at a campsite. The same goes for home insurance—if you’re on your home’s property it might be covered, but damage from a storm at a campground wouldn’t be.
What specialized coverages does Progressive offer?
Progressive offers a variety of specialized coverages that aren’t included on a standard auto insurance policy like:
Con dence on the road
• Roof Protection Plus®: Covers repairs or replacements for RV roofs, including if the cause is wear and tear.*
• Pest Damage Protection SM: Covers the cost of repairs from pest infestations.*
While insurance for your travel trailer may not be legally required, it’s a crucial investment in protecting your RV, nances, and peace of mind.

FROM THE PUBLISHER
I’M AN AMERICAN, BUT I’M NOT ALWAYS SURE WHERE I BELONG.
I’ve lived full time in 48 states. I’ve built businesses from a fold-out table inside an RV. I’ve taken Zoom calls parked next to cattle, casinos, cornfields, and coastlines. Some mornings I worked from a mountain vista, and others, from a Cracker Barrel parking lot.
And somewhere along the way, I stopped feeling like I was from anywhere in particular.
I was born in Seattle, learned to walk in Boston, learned to talk in New York, and learned to run in Los Angeles. I spent 40 years in California chasing dreams, building a life, and raising a family.
I even tried to play ball in Utah, until I found out I was going to be a father and my priorities changed in an instant.
In 2017, after four decades in California, I packed up, hit the road, and became a legal resident of South Dakota. If you know anything about full-time RV life, you know the Big Three when it comes to residency: South Dakota, Texas, and Florida.
Eventually, I bought a 240-acre ranch in Oklahoma, so now, on paper, I’m an Oklahoman. But when people ask where I’m from, I usually just say, “I’m from America,” because I don’t really identify with any one state anymore, or one party, one label, or one side of a line.
I know the word “identify” tends to trigger people these days, but stick with me.
I don’t want to be considered red or blue just because half the people in a state voted a certain way. I don’t want to be lumped in by zip code, license plate, or bumper sticker. I just want to be free. Free to move, free to explore, and free to live like an American.
If you’ve ever spent time on the road, you already know that if all you do is make left turns, you’ll go in circles. Of course, if all you do is make right turns, you’ll also go in circles. The only way to move forward is a mix of both.
That’s the road. That’s life. And that’s America, or at least what it should be—not team sports, tribal camps, or this constant game of “us versus them.” Just forward motion.
I’m from America, I’m an RVer, and I believe in moving forward, not backward.
I RECENTLY FOUND MYSELF IN A CONVERSATION WITH FRIENDS
who were searching for their first RV. I started geeking out about the latest and greatest features in an RV I had just toured, and I could see their eyes get bigger and bigger. This was partly because some features in new RVs are shockingly luxurious, and it can blow people’s minds to find out about them, but it was also because shopping for your first RV can be so overwhelming. It reminded me just how big of a learning curve we all have to overcome when starting out.

Mid-bunks:The Flexible
Floor Plan You Didn’t Know You Needed
If you’re looking for an RV that balances family-friendly sleeping space with roomy rear living, mid-bunk models may be the sweet spot. These versatile floor plans tuck a bunkroom between the kitchen and front bedroom, offering a flexible space that can serve as a guest room, office, hobby space, or hideout for the kids. Unlike traditional rear bunkhouses, mid-bunks preserve the full-width rear living area many RVers love, often with panoramic windows and spacious seating
Whether you’re full-timing with family or just want extra room for guests, mid-bunks offer privacy, storage, and versatility. When shopping for a mid-bunk, keep an eye out for model names ending in “MB” or “MBS,” although some manufacturers use other indicators too, like “MP” for “multi-purpose.”

BEST PORTABLE KAYAKS FOR RVERS
APORTABLE KAYAK MIGHT BE JUST WHAT YOU NEED if you want to hit the water without hauling a full-size kayak on your RV. The best options for RVers are compact enough to stash in a storage bay or trunk, and require very little setup time. It’s a big plus if it can be lightweight, too—especially when you’re lugging gear in and out of the rig. PFAS Regulation
Vermont lawmakers have passed HB 238, advancing a statewide phase-out of consumer products containing added PFAS, or per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances. The legislation directs state officials to study PFAS in complex durable goods—including RVs—and issue regulatory recommendations by 2033. Vermont is one of many states addressing the issue. The RVIA is monitoring the regulations and has released its most comprehensive PFAS regulatory guidance to date, “PFAS FAQs for the RV Industry,” to help manufacturers stay on top of the regulations.

One that comes to mind is a 3-week adventure around California where I learned a lot about driving! I drove on icy roads and learned to stay calm enough to counteract gravity, and I also drove for an hour on the most curvy road I’ve ever seen to get to a campsite.
Is there anything specific that made you want to RV?
I wanted to challenge the status quo of women, people of color,
and young people. I wanted to be confident enough as a young woman to know I don’t need anyone else. I also hoped to inspire other women to solo travel to discover themselves and their true identities. Women can do much more than traditional roles.
What’s something about you that people might find surprising to know?
Well, I look at it as normal, but people say it’s incredible that after never having driven a trailer in my life, I drove all the way from San Diego to Canada in my Airstream as a mixed-race 23-year-old woman. I also love to incorporate all my hobbies into my Airstream life, including woodworking, 3D printing, cooking, fishing, resin art, and jam making.
I graduated from UC Berkeley in 2022 and am trying to go to culinary school while living out of my Airstream next year.

THE LTVA LIFESTYLE: A $180 CAMPING SECRET
By Jamie May, Editorial Director
Notevery full-time RVer is interested in resort-style amenities, bustling campgrounds, or the constant pressure of making reservations weeks in advance. Some of us just need a wide-open horizon, a legal place to stay put, and the freedom to come and go.
Shortly after hitting the road full time, I found out about LTVAs and fell in love with the many benefits they offer. The LTVA lifestyle made full-timing possible for me. It gave me an affordable base camp and allowed me to jet out on smaller trips while always having a place to return to, with a strong sense of community that made it feel like home.
But after inviting some friends to join me, I quickly learned that LTVAs are not for everyone.
WHAT IS AN LTVA?
LTVA stands for Long-Term Visitor Area. It’s a camping program run by the Bureau of Land Management on public land in the desert Southwest— primarily in Arizona and California.
Designed with full-time RVers and snowbirds in mind, LTVAs offer affordable, legal dry camping from September 15 to April 15.
For just $180, RVers can stay at an LTVA for the entire season. Facilities are minimal—typically including dumpsters, dump stations, potable water, and, in some cases, restrooms—but the trade-off is a level of freedom and space you won’t find in traditional RV parks. 14-day permits are also available.
BENEFITS OF THE LTVA LIFESTYLE
I first learned about LTVAs through an invitation from a woman I met while traveling. I was convinced to go and check it out after she told me about the view of the water she had from her spot. I didn’t think I’d be staying long, but after I arrived, I saw no reason not to stay for the season. Here are some of the biggest benefits, based on my experiences.
Incredible Views: The lake was on one side of me, and the mountains were on the other. I
love the desert and the water, so for me, this was the best of both worlds.
Affordability: For the price of a weekend at a typical RV resort, you get up to seven months of legal camping.
Climate: Winters in the desert Southwest are sunny, dry, mild, and warmer than any other part of the country, so it’s the perfect place to be during that time of year.
Flexibility: There are no designated sites or reservations. You can claim the space you want, within reason, and then that spot is yours for the season. You don’t have to check in or check out at a certain time, so there are no time or space constraints. RVers can spread out, move locations, or settle into one spot all season.
Freedom to Roam: With the LTVA permit, you can leave your spot for short adventures and then return. Just be sure to leave something in your spot
to mark it while you’re gone, or have a neighbor watch your spot for you. Be sure to tie or weigh down your things, as the desert can get windy.
Community: Everyone was so nice and welcoming! I was invited to yoga classes, meditation circles, potlucks, music sessions, and nightly campfires under the stars.
DRAWBACKS OF THE LTVA LIFESTYLE
I thought that because I loved the LTVA, everyone I invited to try it out would love it too, but that wasn’t the case. LTVAs are not for everyone! Here are some of the drawbacks.
Dry Camping: There are no hookups, so you’ll need a strong solar setup to run your power. You can use a generator, but your neighbors might not appreciate it.
Remote Locations: Most LTVAs are far from towns and services, so stocking up on supplies might require a 40-mile or more round trip to the closest town.
Harsh Elements: The winter wind in the desert is really bad and will sidetrack your plans some days. It can also get extremely hot during the beginning and end of the season, so you’ll need to make plans for staying cool. Dust can also be a problem.
Connectivity: Cell signal and internet access can be spotty, depending on your carrier and exact location.
No Frills: Need to shower? You’ll have to figure that out on your own. At the Imperial Dam LTVA, coin-operated showers are nearby; otherwise, minimal facilities mean you’ll need to be
self-sufficient.
The LTVA lifestyle is ideal for RVers who are self-sufficient, budget-conscious, and comfortable with off-grid living. It’s an excellent fit for those who value freedom and flexibility over amenities and don’t mind trading creature comforts for wide-open spaces.
I loved my time at an LTVA. It made full-time RVing not only possible, but sustainable. The combination of affordability, freedom, and community gave me a secure base camp and the breathing room to explore the Southwest on my own terms.

12 State Parks WORTH THE TRIP
SUMMERS CAN BE CROWDED AT AMERICA’S NATIONAL PARKS , so why not take the road less traveled and visit some state parks instead? They’re certainly not totally empty, but they’re a great alternative to more crowded national parks, and they have rock formations, waterfalls, forests, and trails that rival the national parks’ beauty. No matter what part of the country you’re in, there is sure to be a state park nearby worthy of a visit. Here are 12 state parks across the United States to check out on your travels.
GOOSENECKS STATE PARK
Perched above a stunning desert canyon, Utah’s Goosenecks State Park offers RVers a front-row seat to one of nature’s most dramatic river bends, where the San Juan River snakes for more than six miles while moving just a mile and a half west.
This remote overlook reveals 300 million years of geology carved into 1,000-foot-deep meanders. Campsites along the rim are first come, first served, with no hookups—so be prepared before you go.
FALL CREEK FALLS STATE PARK
Tennessee
With more than 200 campsites and access to 29,000-plus acres of waterfalls, gorges, and hardwood forests on the Cumberland Plateau, Fall Creek Falls State Park is a top attraction in Tennessee.
Home to one of the tallest waterfalls in the eastern United States, the park also offers hiking, backcountry camping, a golf course, and family-friendly amenities like playgrounds and picnic areas. Stock up at the camp store, grab a bite at the snack bar, and don’t miss the scenic trails leading to Fall Creek Falls and other cascades like Piney Falls and Cane Creek Falls.

CUSTER STATE PARK South Dakota
Custer State Park sprawls across 71,000 acres in South Dakota’s Black Hills, and is home to RV-friendly campgrounds and a stunning variety of wildlife, including bison, elk, pronghorn, and the famously friendly begging burros. With campgrounds scattered throughout the park, you’ll find sites for any rig size, plus easy access to hiking, scenic drives, and nearby towns for stocking up on supplies.
12 State Parks WORTH THE TRIP
VALLEY OF FIRE STATE PARK Nevada
Just 45 minutes from Las Vegas, Valley of Fire State Park is Nevada’s oldest and largest state park, and one of the most scenic spots in the Southwest. Its bright red sandstone formations, ancient petroglyphs, and iconic drives—like the Instagram-famous Mouse’s Tank Road—make it a must-visit for RVers. A drive through the park offers jaw-dropping views, but short trails like Fire Wave and White Domes lead to even more unforgettable sights.
The park has two campgrounds, Atlatl Rock and Arch Rock. Atlatl Rock offers electric hookups, showers, and roomy sites for rigs up to 35 feet, while Arch Rock has no hookups, but provides more rustic, shaded sites tucked among red rocks. Boondockers will love the dispersed camping just outside the west entrance—cell signal is strong there, unlike inside the park—and Stewarts Point on the east side offers free lakeside camping with a National Parks Pass.
Many trails are closed to avoid the summer heat between May 15 and September 30, so be sure to plan your visit outside of those dates if you’re hoping to do some hiking. Don’t miss a stop at the visitor center or nearby Rogers Warm Spring for a unique soak. With vivid scenery, easy hikes, and RV-friendly access, Valley of Fire delivers national park vibes without the crowds.

Central Oregon’s Smith Rock State Park features towering rock spires and deep river canyons, making it a world-class destination for rock climbers and hikers alike. The park sits at 3,000 feet and features dramatic cliffs of welded tuff—volcanic ash compressed more than 30 million years ago. While the on-site bivouac camping is walk-in only, RVers will find nearby options at Skull Hollow Campground or Crooked River Ranch RV Park. Be sure to plan ahead, especially in the summer.

12 State Parks WORTH THE TRIP
DEAD HORSE POINT STATE PARK Utah
Your curiosity level about the odd name of this park is nothing compared to the views you’ll see when you’re there.
Utah’s Dead Horse Point State Park sits atop a stunning mesa carved by millions of years of geological activity, offering expansive views of canyon country and distant mountains. The desert environment features slow-growing plants and mostly nocturnal wildlife adapted to scarce water and extreme temperatures.
The Wingate Campground has minimal sites, some with electricity and none with water, so plan to fill up in Moab or Green River before venturing there. Sites can be reserved in advance or claimed first come, first served on arrival if available.
And in case you’re still wondering, according to Moab’s The Times-Independent, there are three competing legends and no consensus on how the park got its name.
WATKINS GLEN STATE PARK New York
The Finger Lakes region of upstate New York is a must-see destination for RVers, shaped by glaciers into 11 narrow lakes and dramatic gorges. At the southern end of Seneca Lake, Watkins Glen State Park offers breathtaking scenery with towering 200foot cliffs and 19 waterfalls cascading along Glen Creek. You can even walk behind two of them! Stone arch bridges and rock tunnels add to the park’s postcard-perfect charm.
Watkins Glen is a paradise for hikers and photographers alike, with the popular Gorge Trail and Indian Trail. The park is very popular, so visiting early or late in the day helps avoid crowds. Staying overnight at the park’s campground is a great way to experience the beauty with fewer visitors and get an early start on the trails.
GO DEEPER: Check out Issue 10 of RV Today for more about Watkins Glen State Park and others.
Ohio
Hocking Hills State Park offers year-round beauty in southeastern Ohio. It’s a scenic favorite, known for its dramatic cliffs, waterfalls, and hemlock-shaded gorges. The campground features full-hookup RV sites and non-electric sites—reservations are required and can be made up to six months in advance.

PALO DURO CANYON STATE PARK
Texas
Palo Duro Canyon, the second-largest canyon in the U.S., is tucked into the Texas Panhandle and often called the “Grand Canyon of Texas.”
With striking red rock formations, a rich cultural history, and 30-plus miles of trails, it’s one of the state’s top RV-friendly parks.
The park offers several campgrounds with water and electric hookups, plus tent-only and primitive areas. Sites are reservable. Spring and fall offer the best weather, though the canyon is known for its steady winds. If spots fill up, nearby RV parks in Canyon or Amarillo offer solid alternatives.
STARVED ROCK STATE PARK Illinois
Just off I-80 and not too far from Chicago, Starved Rock State Park is a scenic stop with 18 stunning sandstone canyons and seasonal waterfalls carved by glacial water. The park’s campground offers about 130 reservable sites with electric hookups, fire pits, and picnic tables—plus shower houses, fresh water, and a dump station, though there are no water or sewer hookups at the sites. Sites vary from sunny fields to shaded woods and can accommodate rigs up to 45 feet. Enjoy the beautiful hiking trails while you're there.

Devil’s Lake State Park is a destination along Wisconsin’s Ice Age National Scenic Trail, where you’ll find 500-foot quartzite bluffs towering above a 360acre lake. With nearly 30 miles of scenic hiking trails, beaches for swimming, picnic spots, and paddle-friendly waters, it’s a favorite for outdoor enthusiasts. The park also offers many camping options, making it a great base camp for RVers exploring the natural beauty of the region.
DEVIL’S LAKE STATE PARK
PORCUPINE MOUNTAINS WILDERNESS
STATE PARK Michigan
Known as “the Porkies,” Porcupine Mountains
Wilderness State Park spans 60,000 acres of rugged beauty along Lake Superior in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula. Towering old-growth forests, cascading waterfalls, and sweeping views from Lake of the Clouds and Summit Peak make this the state’s largest and most scenic park.
Whether you’re into hiking, fishing, snow sports, or just soaking in the views, there’s something here for every adventurer. RVers can find campsites throughout the park and enjoy easy access to highlights like the Presque Isle River corridor, a disc golf course, and seasonal chairlift rides.
ANATOMY OF AN RV
MANY MANUFACTURERS ARE HAPPY TO HOST VISITORS FOR A FACTORY TOUR, and if you attend one, you’ll probably be able to see all of the components of an RV being put into place. Here are some of the high-quality components Forest River sales reps told us about during a recent factory tour.
2025 Sabre 33RLP | Forest River
NOrcO
The Huck Bolt fasteners on Norco’s chassis created for Forest River are exponentially stronger than a weld.
This brand of oriented strand board (OSB) does not warp and has better screw retention than traditional plywood floors. This moisture-resistant OSB is a recent upgrade and has a limited lifetime warranty.
ONe-Piece Pvc rOOf MeMBrANe
One-piece PVC roof membranes are durable and long-lasting. The all-white piece reflects sun and heat, and the seamless top prevents leaks.
vAcuuM-BOND lAMiNATeD siDewAlls AND sliDes
Each wall contains layers of materials, including the exterior shell, wood, insulation, and aluminum. A vacuum-bond lamination process seals all of the materials together so they become one solid piece that defends against delamination and leakage, and holds up better in the long run. These pieces are put together at a separate lamination plant and then shipped daily in pairs before being placed on the RV.
ONe-Piece viNYl flOOriNG
Once the wood flooring is laid down, it’s covered with a one-piece vinyl flooring that goes down over the top from front to back. This gives the floor a seamless look, improves the durability and water resistance, and ensures easy maintenance and cleaning.
TusayanMontane Campground
State Route 64
Grand Canyon Village, AZ 86023 recreation.gov/camping/ campgrounds/234488
We found this little dry-camping gem just 5 minutes from the south entrance to Grand Canyon National Park. Though there’s plenty of shade, we had enough sky for good solar and satellite reception. It’s close to the road, but still very quiet. Sites are gravel and mostly level, with a mix of pull-through and back-in sites. Our site easily fit our 30-foot fifth wheel. The roads are smooth, and the campground is clean and has new pit toilets. At $10 a night in the off season, it was a bargain. You may even see elk grazing!
