Time to pull out the billionaire’s checkbook! This over-the-top super mansion might be a match for the homebody super rich who don’t fancy scooting around to the world’s hot spots via their private jets or mega yachts to jump from party to party. It already has world-class entertainment just inside its doors. Two years ago, this mansion floated in rarified air as the country’s most expensive home at $250 million.

THE MOST ROMANTIC WINE IN THE WORLD

If I had just one wish in my lifetime it would be that the calendar begins with the month of February and not January. This way the New Year would begin with Valentines Day: romance, flowers, dining out and wine. Warms an Italian man’s heart just thinking about it. Well, February is now here so make some memorable plans for the 14th before it happens. Which wine you say? Think ruby red, a rose bouquet, intense and aromatic. The flavor would be raspberry and strawberry with just enough sweetness to reveal your intentions. Of course, Rosa Regale is a sparkling wine, which, like Champagne that we wrote about last week, has maximum scented bubbly from Castello Banfi, a family of fine Italian wines from Montalcino in Tuscany Italy. Banfi is primarily known for its world class Brunello, an aged, complex Sangiovese, released in its 5th year after harvest. Just as much quality goes into their current 2017 Rosa Regale. These grapes are from Banfi’s 19th century sparkling wine cellars in the town of Strevi in Piemonte, with vineyard estates yielding 100% Brachetto d’ Acqui grapes from the towns of Acqui and Gavi. The cooler climate is ideal for sparkling wines and the winery keeps every part of the process cool, for charismatic color and aroma.

UPPING YOUR GAME WATCHING PARTY

You’re looking forward to the big game, and you’ve invited all your friends for what should be an exciting day. But now the big questions persist: Do you have enough food? Is my menu going to make everyone happy? What more do you need for a successful game day party? Here are a few simple tips to up your game and make it a day to remember ... win or lose. 1. Make space for a big crowd Take a good look at your living room, den or wherever you’re planning to watch the big game together. Create an open place by removing some clutter to make room for your friends. Pressed for time? Stick random items you don’t know what to do with in a big box or bin and store in another room. Remove extra furniture - like end tables - to make enough room for everybody to sit and move around. We all know how excited we can get when our favorite team scores. Keep in mind that you do need to keep at least that coffee table for all those great snacks you’ll be serving. 2. Give everyone the best seat in your “stadium” On game day, the right TV makes all the difference, and now is perhaps the best opportunity to invest in that high-tech big screen TV you’ve always wanted. LG Electronics is

offering for a very limited time the lowest prices ever for the top-rated and critically-acclaimed LG B8 OLED TV with AI ThinQ. LG OLED’s highprecision images, incredible color and wide viewing angles deliver the ultimate theater-quality experience in your home. The LG B8 OLED TV has 8 million-plus pixels for crisp details, making it ideal for sports. Impress your game day fans with a new 55or 65-inch model that will make them feel like they’re actually at the game. 3. Make comfort a priority Chances are, you don’t have bleachers in your home - but do you have enough seating for everyone in the room where you’ll be watching? Don’t try to cram five people onto a three-person sofa. Instead, move a few extra chairs into the room from elsewhere in the house if needed. Think ahead as to when guests may stand or sit - the halftime show is a fan favorite when most people prefer to sit. 4. Prepare for a thirsty crowd Plan a variety of drink options, especially if you’re inviting families with kids or friends who prefer nonalcoholic beverages. Make sure to supply alternatives such as flavored water and soft drinks, so everyone can enjoy their drink of choice during the game.

hello Hawai‘i!

5. Get the greatest snacks Everyone loves game-day snacks, but a few bags of chips and some store-bought dip just doesn’t impress anymore. There are so many crowdpleasing favorites, from nachos and wings to chili and pizza, but if you’re not a great cook, you don’t need to let that get in your way. Many grocery stores and restaurants will prep a big spread that you can pick up that day. It’s as simple as calling ahead to make your order. Or, if friends are willing, go potluck. Ask everyone to tell you what they’re bringing, though,

so you don’t end up with five pots of chili and nothing else. Prep or buy more food than you think you’ll need, just in case the game goes into overtime! No matter which team you’re rooting for, your game day party will score big with the right setting in your home, delicious snacks and the perfect viewing screen to bring all the action to life. Find out more about your viewing options at lg.com and you’ll come out as this year’s MVP.. - (BPT)

Tailgating warriors range from the most serious of fans to the folks that don’t quite manage to get in the gates for that championship game. These fans can now watch the big game from that very tailgate. Gridiron battles and ballpark miracles generate cherished memories. From the days of listening to the score updates of conference rivals via AM radio, to trying desperately to get that connection on a smartphone to follow live streaming, the interest in the games you’re not at has always been there. Holding the key to that game may make you the most popular member of your tailgating party. Here are five tailgating scenarios and tips to keep you connected, safe and ready to enjoy your tailgating experience! 1. Collapsible kitchen kits, retractable cutting boards and disinfecting wipes provide a simple prepping and serving system for tailgating on the go. After the big game when it’s time to retrieve your gear, you’ve got a clean and

secure tote ready for action the next weekend. 2. “The Grove” is where Ole Miss fans have tailgated in its breathtaking, tree-lined, 10-acre field for generations. But this beautiful tailgating spot also has all types of cellular and WiFi signal disruptions, and north of 100,000 people vying for a WiFi connection. Winegard Company’s ConnecT 2.0 WiFi/4G LTE extender improves exclusive connectivity for your party. Waterproof and backed by a warranty, this device is less than two feet in diameter but gets the signals you need to be the quarterback of your tailgating team. 3. The Washington Huskies boast another unique tailgating scene. On the shores of Washington Lake, many fans “tailgate” in the multiple harbors. Often folks hop from one boat slip to the next. However, the most crowded of slips will be those that have a portable HDTV system to watch the best games live. The DISH Playmaker portable satellite TV antenna powered by Winegard enables you to follow

every team. And setting up is easy, with several mounting options for your convenience, from a tripod for easy positioning on the dock, to a window attachment for your vehicle or placement on your RV. 4. Aboard any tailgating vessel, fire extinguishers are a requirement, and first aid kits are also a great idea. Having these things on hand, water or land, will save the day of a loved one or a fellow fan. 5. What about night games or games in stormy weather? A waterproof flashlight or lantern can provide even the weariest of fans an opportunity to pack up camp after the big game safely and efficiently. Using lights with clamps leaves both hands available to avoid an amateur one-handed acrobatic packing effort. Don’t forget a set of extra batteries to ensure your light shines and you all can depart safely. Given these tips, fans will stay safe and connected, with cherished memories engraved forever. - (BPT)

SAN JUAN HILLS HIGH SCHOOL VIRTUAL ENTERPRISE CLASS SUCCEEDS IN BAKERSFIELD

San Juan Hills High School Virtual Enterprise Business Plan Team Virtual Enterprise at San Juan Hills High School is a collaborative learning environment that offers students hands-on, real-world experience in business. In this class, students work together to create and run a mock business as a class. They all have different roles in the company and work in different departments, just like in a real business. Students also compete in trade shows against other Virtual Enterprise students and can be awarded in categories like salesmanship, booth set-up, business/marketing plans, and human resources. This year’s students at San Juan Hills High School created “inVEst,” essentially a stock market or trading platform for Virtual Enterprise companies. Last week, the San Juan Hills High School Virtual Enterprise class competed in the California State Trade Show in Bakersfield against a total of 80 schools and brought home three awards! The Business Plan Team of juniors Emily Wale, Jaden Bryan, and James Wale, along with senior Cole Lowey, earned 7th place in the state of California, Page 8

qualifying them for a possible spot to compete in the National Business Plan Competition being held in New York in April. In order to qualify for this competition, Business Plan Competition students have to formulate a detailed written Business Plan and present it to judges within an 8-10 minute time frame, followed by 10 minutes of questions from the judges. Students then compete in four rounds of competition, with the field narrowed down each time. Human Resources associates Isabella Poppen (freshman) and San Juan Hills High School Virtual Enterprise Human Resources Amanda Fohrman (senior) earned Associates Gold for placing in the top 5 out of 80 competing firms. Sales associates Diego Harrison (sophomore) and Bradley Armstrong (sophomore) were awarded Silver for placing in the top 10 out of 80 competing firms. As the Virtual Enterprise class continues to grow at San Juan Hills High School, the school is increasingly proud of these students for their hard work in setting up their business this year and competing at such a high level at the state competition! FESTIVAL OF ARTS NOW ACCEPTING SCHOLARSHIP APPLICATIONS

The Festival of Arts in Laguna Beach is proud to announce that the scholarship applications for high school seniors who reside in Laguna Beach or attend a Laguna Beach High School are now open for applicant submissions online. Applicants may apply for any or all four categories. The four-year, highly competitive scholarships are awarded to students who excel in Film, Performing Arts (dance, music and theatre arts- including performance and production), Visual Arts and Writing. Recipients will only be awarded one scholarship. Since 1957, the Festival of Arts scholarship program has supported rising young artists by making it possible for students to pursue college studies in the arts. “Students with talents in multiple fields are encouraged to submit an application in more than one category,” said Festival of Arts Board Secretary and Scholarship Chair Pat Kollenda. She continued, “This is an excellent opportunity for students who are considering a career in the arts.” Scholarship applications are now available online at the Festival’s website foapom.com/scholarships. An applicant must be a graduating

high school senior who resides in Laguna Beach or attends Laguna Beach High School. Application deadline is March 8, 2019. Auditions and interviews will be scheduled in March and April 2018. Scholarship awards begin at a minimum of $1,000 and can be renewed for a total of four one-year scholarships. Students must reapply each summer for a continuation of scholarship status. Last year, the Festival of Arts awarded nearly $30,000 to graduating seniors for the 2019 - 2020 academic year. Many scholarship winners pursue successful careers in the arts, and some even return to the Festival as exhibiting artists. In addition to Scholarship Committee Chair Pat Kollenda, committee members include Wayne Baglin, Marge Earl, Kathy Jones and Jacquie Moffett. For general scholarship information, call Michelle Reindl at (949) 464-4201 or visit the website at LagunaFestivalofArts.org. FINE HAND CRAFTED GAME TABLES & FURNITURE “The first time I saw Sean Woolsey’s ping pong table it was in his studio and I was struck by the craftsmanship and artistry. I feel the same way two years later. It is absolutely beautiful. The photos on his website don’t do it justice.” Fred Crim, Huntington Beach, CA At Sean Woolsey Studio we know that the only way to build really fine furniture is to use time-proven wood crafting techniques. Yet we use design technology and lasting coatings, glues, and other products of the 21st century. The creative process melds two eras yielding exquisite, select furnishings for home or office. Our standard is to not take short cuts used in mass production. We craft individual furniture pieces and game tables in the detail focused way of the past masters who have left a legacy. While a picture may be worth a thousand words there is nothing like seeing our pieces in person. Once you do, we believe it will be apparent there is a marked difference in quality and craftsmanship in a piece from Sean Woolsey Studio. So if you are considering acquiring something new and special to add to your home or office we welcome you to come see for yourself. You will walk away with a new appreciation of true craftsmanship.

$100 MILLION PRICE DROP, COMES WITH ART AND AUTOMOBILES!

Time to pull out the billionaire’s checkbook! This over-the-top supermansion might be a match for the homebody super rich who don’t fancy scooting around to the world’s hot spots via their private jets or mega yachts to jump from party to party. It already has world-class entertainment just inside its doors. Two years ago, this mansion floated in rarified air as the country’s most expensive home at $250 million. It was a shocking listing both in price and amenities. Though no longer the most expensive with an overall price drop of $100 million, it still comes stocked with every high-end piece of decor, art, automobiles, staff and amenity possible. Newly priced at $150 million. “This home was curated for the ultimate billionaire who wants the best of everything that exists in life,” said developer Bruce Makowsky when he put the turnkey Bel Air giga mansion on the market for the first time in early 2017. It was lauded to be the 21st century’s answer to a new housing niche in the luxury market where the new owner would only have to bring his toothbrush and a bathing suit - or not - to begin

living the dream. Everything else was supplied: furnishings, walls and niches filled with curated art, a $30 million collection of exotic cars and motorcycles, two fully-stocked champagne-and-wine cellars, the most advanced home-tech system in the world, two alligator-upholstered elevators and, to sweeten the pie just a little more, . . a massive candy wall in the game room with help-yourself glass cylinders of every favorite. . . and let’s not forget the helicopter! But that’s not all. For two years from the onset of ownership, the developer supplies a personal chef, a masseuse and five other full-time employees who live on site in a separate staff wing and whose salaries have been paid. Awash with every conceivable amenity for comfortable living and entertaining, the 38,000-square-foot manse has two master suites, ten large VIP guest suites, 21 luxury baths, three gourmet kitchens, five bars, a massage studio and wellness spa and a state-of-the-art fitness center. Makowsky studied land from the ground and air until he found the perfect spot in the hills of Bel Air with a 270-degree view reaching from the

San Gabriel Mountains to the Pacific Ocean beaches of Malibu. From all levels of the house and from the glass-tiled pool and wide terraces, the views are big - from the mountains all the way to the ocean. CHILDHELPS’ “NASHVILLE NIGHTS” RAISES OVER $460,000 FOR CHILDREN Anyone wanting to spend a fun-filled evening in Nashville found just that at Childhelp’s Fall Gala, at the Resort at Pelican Hill. “Nashville Nights” CoChairs, Susan Hill, Kristen James and Pam Pharris organized the Orange County Chapter’s 5th annual gala where guests enjoyed live music by The Arnie Newman Band, whiskey tasting sponsored by The Macallan, gambling, dining and dancing. Live and Silent Auctions and the Grand Prize Raffle provided opportunities for everyone to contribute toward stopping child abuse and neglect. Contribute, they did - the event raised over $460,000! Guests dressed in their best Western wear, had a fabulous pre-party drinks and appetizers, and a scrumptious dinner of Sweet Corn, Jicama, Asian Pear and Cucumber with Avocado Puree salad, a duet entree of Braised Asian-Style Beef Short Ribs and Ginger Blazed Sea Bass along with Horseradish Mashed Potatoes, Haricots Verts, with Carrots in a Cabernet Sauce. Then desserts were a Snickers Chocolate Cream Bar and a Blackberry Chocolate Tart. After dinner, the evening’s program began with Chapter President, Julie Adams, welcoming everyone. She then called on the Men’s Committee Chairs, Mark Adams and Bud Pharris to present the “Benevolent Heart Award.” This year’s awardees were the chapter’s youth auxiliary, WINGS. This group of approximately 60 7th to 12th grade students holds fundraising events, organize annual carnivals at the Merv Griffin Childhelp Village in Beaumont, and they created a WINGS Clubs at their schools throughout Orange County, all to support the lifesaving programs and services provided by Childhelp. The kids say that they’re just “kids helping kids,” but in just 3 short years they have proven just what a truly amazing group of students they are. As dessert was served, the energetic Live Auction began with auctioneer Zack Krone, enticing robust bidding as guests competed to win one of the nine items offered. First up was the diamond-encrusted guitar necklace, a perfect homage to the Nashville scene! Additional Live Auction items included the Ultimate Macallan Party for 10, Pelican Hill Getaway, Catalina Island Adventure, Private Dinner for 12 prepared by Chef Yianni, Luxury Big Bear Getaway, VIP NASCAR and IVI Vision Experience, and an Exceptional Liquor Cabinet. Last minute add-on items included a private jet to Las Vegas plus a very VIP package. The highlight of the Live Auction was the heated bidding for the opportunity to attend Childhelp’s Diamond Jubilee “Drive the Dream” Gala. This event will celebrate 60 years of Childhelp and includes exclusive invitations with Childhelp Founders, Sara O’Meara and Yvonne Fedderson. At the conclusion of the Live Auction, guests moved on to Line Dancing, led by Kristal Lynn, and gaming. To close the gala, celebrity ambassadors Maksim and Peta drew the ticket for the Grand Prize and presented it to winner, Sepi Tabai. Event Committee Members included Iris Asbury, Linda Burns, Christine Bren, Nancy Cardin, Lynn Dowers, Susan Earlabaugh, Patricia Ford, Kelly Haugen, Christine Johnson, Jennifer Kite, Katherine Meredith, Diana Miner, Alison Moriarty, Tami Smith, Gina Van Ocker, Shan Vincent, and Joy WhitlockEstrada. Men’s Committee Members included Scott Amling, Matthew Blake, Jay Burns, Mike Haugen David James, Paul McDonald, Chris Miner, Patrick Moriarty, Mark Simon, Brett Smith, Alix Vincent and Zlatko Zadro. Childhelp is proud to report that for each dollar expended, over 92 cents are invested into serving the children in need of their program services, which include three Group Homes in Costa Mesa and the Childhelp Merv Griffin Village in Beaumont, CA. TIPS TO TACKLE A TASTY GAME DAY MENU

Just like your favorite sports team, hosting a winning big-game party or tailgate takes planning, preparation and teamwork. To make your festivities fun-filled, remember these entertaining tips that are sure to score big with your fans. Scatter the refreshments. Help direct movement and traffic flow by setting up food stations. Using different rooms or areas helps prevent congestion and encourages guests to mingle. Try placing finger foods and other appetizers in a couple of locations, beverages in another area and desserts in yet another space. Embrace variety. Take into account taste preferences and dietary needs, and have an assortment of food and drinks available. Offer spicy options along with less seasoned dishes, both indulgent and better-for-you treats, plus an array of beverages for drinkers and non-drinkers alike. Build your roster. If your party is a potluck, encourage guests to sign up for dishes so you don’t end up with multiple versions of the same thing. Create a discussion group online, or simply ask guests to indicate what they’ll bring along with their RSVP. Don’t forget the dips. Wings are a tailgating staple, and dips are a great way to complement those zesty flavors or cool the heat, but you may find yourself in a team rivalry when it comes to the preferred dip at the game day bash: ranch or bleu cheese dressing? Both pair well with a range of wing flavors, so these dips are sure to be crowd pleasers. The delicious combination of fresh herb and vegetable flavors make Litehouse Homestyle Ranch a perfect party choice, and Litehouse

Chunky Bleu Cheese features fresh buttermilk, homemade mayonnaise and a blend of spices as the backdrop for award-winning artisan blue cheese chunks that will make your fellow sports fans cheer for more. Expand on tradition. Tailgating is a time-honored tradition, and the food lineup is often based on familiar fare. Along with those fan favorites, don’t be afraid to put some new flavors into play, such as these Sticky Sesame Chicken Wings that add a tangy ethnic flair to traditional wings. Find more game day recipes at LitehouseFoods. com. Sticky Sesame Chicken Wings Yield: 4 servings Prep time: 10 minutes Cook time: 40 minutes 1/4 cup flour 1/4 teaspoon salt 20 chicken wings 3 tablespoons soy sauce 2 tablespoons sesame oil 1/2 teaspoon Litehouse Instantly Fresh Garlic 3 tablespoons water, divided 1/2 cup brown sugar 1 tablespoon cornstarch sliced green onions, for garnish sesame seeds, for garnish celery sticks (optional) Litehouse Homestyle Ranch and Chunky Bleu Cheese Dressing Heat oven to 400 F. In large bag, combine flour and salt. Add chicken

wings and shake to coat. Discard any leftover flour. Line baking sheet with foil and spray with pan spray of your choice. Place wings in single layer on baking sheet. Bake wings 40-45 minutes, turning halfway through. In sauce pan over medium heat, combine soy sauce, sesame oil, garlic, 2 tablespoons water and brown sugar. Whisk together remaining water and cornstarch, and pour into sauce. Bring to boil then simmer until thickened. When wings are done, toss with sauce, garnish with green onion and sesame seeds, and serve with celery sticks, ranch and bleu cheese dressing. (Family Features)

RED CROSS ISSUES EMERGENCY CALL FOR BLOOD DONORS A donation shortfall over the winter holidays is prompting the American Red Cross to issue an emergency call for blood and platelet donors to give now to prevent a blood shortage from continuing throughout winter and affecting patient care. The Red Cross collected more than 27,000 fewer blood and platelet donations the weeks of Christmas and New Year’s than needed to sustain a sufficient blood supply. During this period, about 1,350 fewer blood drives were hosted by volunteer sponsor groups than required to meet patient needs as busy holiday schedules kept many donors away. “Many people may not realize that blood products are perishable, and the only source of lifesaving blood for patients is volunteer blood donors,” said Cliff Numark, senior vice president, Red Cross Biomedical Services. “When donations decline – as they did around the holidays and may further decline if severe winter weather and flu season pick up – lifesaving medical treatments could be delayed.” Right now, the Red Cross has less than a three-day supply of most blood types on hand, well below the ideal five-day supply needed to respond to emergencies and daily hospital needs. Blood products are currently being distributed to hospitals faster than donations are coming in. “We hope people can resolve to save lives now – when there is an emergency need – as well as throughout the year,” added Numark. All eligible donors, especially platelet donors and blood donors with type O blood, are urged to make an appointment to give in the coming days to help restock the shelves for hospital patients. Eligible donors can find a blood or platelet donation opportunity and schedule an appointment to donate by using the free Blood Donor App, visiting RedCrossBlood.org or calling 1-800RED CROSS (1-800-733-2767). Volunteer blood drive hosts are also critically needed to prevent the shortage from worsening this winter. Winter weather poses risk to blood supply With several weeks of winter ahead, severe winter weather poses an additional threat to an already low blood supply. Snow, ice and extreme temperatures last January and February forced hundreds of blood drive cancellations, causing about 23,000 blood and platelet donations to go uncollected. In December, winter weather resulted in nearly twice the number of uncollected blood and platelet donations as December 2017. Who blood donations help In May 2018, 4-year-old Branson Gibby was diagnosed Page 16

with neuroblastoma, a rare type of childhood cancer that affects certain types of nerve tissue after complaining of pain in his arms and legs and running a fever. After many tests, his mother, Erica Austin, was given the news that no mother ever wants to hear: her son had cancer. Branson’s 18-month treatment plan includes many rounds of grueling chemotherapy, surgery to remove the tumor near his kidney and spinal cord, stem cell transplants, and possibly radiation. He has already endured several lengthy hospital stays and began receiving the first of his stem cell transplants this fall. Since his diagnosis, Branson has received 12 blood and 11 platelet transfusions. Of the transfusions, Austin said, “They have been so important to keep him as healthy, active and battle-ready, as possible. This is the hardest thing our family has ever faced. However, there is hope in the generosity of strangers who are helping to heal my brave boy. Blood and platelet donations truly are the gift of life.” How to donate blood Simply download the American Red Cross Blood Donor App, visit RedCrossBlood.org or call 1-800-RED CROSS (1-800-7332767) to make an appointment or for more information. All blood types are needed to ensure a reliable supply for patients. A blood donor card or driver’s license or two other forms of identification are required at check-in. Individuals who are 17 years of age in most states (16 with parental consent where allowed by state law), weigh at least 110 pounds and are in generally good health may be eligible to donate blood. High school students and other donors 18 years of age and younger also have to meet certain height and weight requirements. Blood and platelet donors can save time at their next donation by using RapidPass® to complete their predonation reading and health history questionnaire online, on the day of their donation, before arriving at the blood drive. To get started, follow the instructions at RedCrossBlood.org/ RapidPass or use the Blood Donor App. Upcoming blood donation opportunities Jan. 14-Feb. 15 Dana Point 2/15/2019: 10 a.m. - 4 p.m., Dana Point Library, 33841 Niguel Road Foothill Ranch 1/28/2019: 9 a.m. - 3 p.m., CB Richard Ellis, 27442 Portola Parkway 2/7/2019: 10 a.m. - 4 p.m., Foothill Ranch Library, 27002 Cabriole Irvine 2/1/2019: 9 a.m. - 3 p.m., LF Products, 2052 Alton Parkway 2/7/2019: 9 a.m. - 3 p.m., Irvine Valley College, 5500 Irvine Center

PHILHARMONIC SOCIETY OF ORANGE COUNTY ANNOUNCES CHINESE NEW YEAR CELEBRATION

The Philharmonic Society of Orange County is pleased to present its Chinese New Year Celebration on Monday, February 18, 2019, 8pm, at Segerstrom Hall, Segerstrom Center for the Arts. Bringing a rare opportunity to experience the quintessence of Chinese culture, the Chinese New Year Celebration features a performance by the Hubei Chime Bells National Chinese Orchestra, as well as the internationally renowned China National Beijing Opera Company, Troupe One, with special appearances by Peking Opera superstars Yu Kuizhi and Li Shengsu. This performance is part of the Philharmonic Society’s Eclectic Orange Series, sponsored by Judith and Howard Jelinek. Tickets go on sale to the general public on Monday, December 17. The first half of the program features the Hubei Chime Bells National Chinese Orchestra performing works that transport listeners to ancient China. In 1978, a set of 2,500-yearold bronze and stone chime bells were excavated from the tomb of a Chinese ruler from the Bronze Age in Hubei, China. Believed to be the earliest twelve-tone equal temperament instruments in the world, these chime bells create an authentic, melodious timbre and also are breathtaking to behold due to their grand scale and elaborate cast technique. Additionally, other traditional instruments are featured on the program, including the qing, a stone or jade chime; the xun, a vessel flute; and the se, a plucked zither. The second half of the concert features Troupe One of the China National Beijing Opera Company

presenting three scenes from the Peking opera repertoire that include instrumental music, vocal performance, mime, dance and acrobatics. Dressed in traditional costumes with full makeup, celebrated performers Yu Kuizhi and Li Shengsu are featured on a program that includes scenes from three classic Peking operas: Divergence, Palace of Eternal Life, as well as Uproar in Heaven, a classic Chinese story that follows the adventures of the mischievous Monkey King who wreaks havoc in his rebellion against the Jade Emperor. The Hubei Chime Bells National Chinese Orchestra is a part of the Hubei Provincial Opera and Dance Drama Theatre, which is a leading performing arts organization that produces and performs traditional and folk opera, dance and music of the Hubei province. Committed to innovation in the arts, the theatre has won numerous awards including the first prize of the Excellent Performance Award of the first China Opera Festival, a Wenhua Award and Hubei Five-One Project Award. Through their international tours, the Hubei Chime Bells National Chinese Orchestra commits itself to cultural exchange and establishing connections between Chinese people and people from all over the world through visual and auditory performances. Founded in 1955 as China’s premier Peking opera organization, the China National Beijing Opera Company is one of the national ensembles of performance arts directly under the supervision of the Ministry of Culture, People’s Republic of China.

The company includes acclaimed performers, playwrights, directors, composers and stage designers and has presented productions ranging over the wide diversity of Peking opera performance styles. The company’s Troupe One is its most esteemed, delivering the highest quality performances of traditional and contemporary repertoire. Masters of their generation, leading artist Yu Kuizhi and acclaimed director Li Shengsu have enhanced the artistic style of Troupe One, which also includes numerous performers who have won awards in national competitions. Segerstrom Center for the Arts, Segerstrom Hall, is located at 600 Town Center Drive, Costa Mesa, CA 92626. Ticket prices start at $28 and are available at the Philharmonic Society box office at (949) 553-2422, online at www.PhilharmonicSociety. org, and at the Center box office at (714) 556-2787. Artists, programs and prices are subject to change. A B O U T T H E P H I L H A R M O N I C S O C I E T Y: Founded in 1954, the Philharmonic Society of Orange County presents the world’s most acclaimed symphony orchestras, chamber ensembles, soloists and international artists for the enjoyment and appreciation of Orange County audiences. A catalyst for cultural and educational development throughout the region, the Philharmonic Society is a key resident company in the Renée and Henry Segerstrom Concert Hall at Segerstrom Center for the Arts, and also presents concerts at the Irvine Barclay Theatre and various venues in Orange County.

For more than 60 years, the Society has presented artists who set the standards for artistic achievement: Sir Georg Solti, Itzhak Perlman, Jacqueline du Pré, Daniel Barenboim, Lorin Maazel and Cecilia Bartoli, to name just a few. In addition, many of the world’s greatest orchestras have performed in Orange County by invitation of the Philharmonic Society. The Society celebrated the diversity of our cultural landscape with Eclectic Orange Festival presentations from 1999-2004. Eclectic Orange events championed contemporary composers through commissions and sponsorship of regional and world premieres. Among the living composers presented were Tan Dun, Philip Glass, Osvaldo Golijov, John Adams, Edgar Meyer, Burhan Öçal and Mikel Rouse. Past presentations include the West Coast premiere of Steve Reich’s “The Cave,” the Southern California premiere of Terry Riley’s “Sun Rings,” the United States exclusive engagement of Théâtre Zingaro, the West Coast premiere of “Orion” by Philip Glass, the West Coast premiere of Steve Reich’s “WTC 9/11”, and the 2011 exclusive West Coast recital appearance of opera superstar Renée Fleming. The Society’s nationally recognized Youth Music Education Programs, one of the most extensive music education programs of its kind in the country, are offered free of charge to schools, students and parents, and each year reach more than 160,000 students from first grade through high school.

5 STEPS FOR GAME DAY PARTY SUCCESS

Whether you have been planning for months or you’re inviting guests the day of, hosting a huge crowd on game day requires a bit more than RSVPs and a welcoming setting. Whether a “huge crowd” to you means five guests or 50, starting out with a plan can help make the day more enjoyable for everyone. To help make your game day soiree a success, knowing which snacks are top picks for the event might make shopping a little easier. The experts at Frito-Lay North America conducted the inaugural U.S. Snack Index – a poll that surveyed Americans for insights on which snacks rose to the top for consumers this year – to share what guests want on game day. Get Organized From Guests to Groceries From sending invites to selecting the snacks you’ll serve, start by organizing your thoughts and writing down the details. For starters, create a guest list so you’ll know exactly how much food and drink you’ll need to buy and map out your grocery list for a stress-free trip to the store. Game Day Setup A picture is worth a thousand words, and you can rest assured

many game day viewers will plan to share images of their spreads on social media. To make sure your game day setup is ready for primetime, start by decluttering your space, arranging furniture for ample seating and laying out the pictureperfect snack table so guests can reach for snacks, plates, napkins and utensils, with easy access. Snacks for All While it may be first instinct to feel like you need to cook crafty dishes and artsy snacks, that may not necessarily be important to game day guests. In fact, according to the index, nearly all game day party-goers will enjoy snacks during the competition, and 80 percent of viewers said they’ll eat either potato or tortilla chips. Chips aren’t the only thing to consider. Score big with your guests by picking the perfect pairings, like salsa for tortilla chips, which ranks as the most popular dip overall, or French onion dip, which is the most popular choice for dipping potato chips. Encourage Fun for Everyone Of course, the game is the reason for the party and the center of attention, but the fact is it’s possible

not every person in attendance is a sports fan. By bringing out board games or cards and setting up tables in adjacent rooms, you can encourage a fun environment for everyone at the party. Plus, by creating a secondary station away from the TV, you’ll allow for non-sports conversation without upsetting the diehards. Keep it Simple Generally, game day watch parties are of the more laid-back variety. This no-fuss attitude carries over into party snack prep, as more than half of

viewers surveyed in the U.S. Snack Index prefer to prepare simple recipes whether they’re hosting or attending. On top of laid-back snacks, more than one-third of consumers polled plan to simply put snacks in the closest bowl rather than planning out a social media-worthy snack table. 2019: THE YEAR OF THE SPAC E-AGE HOME

In 2019, the “space-age” home will become a reality with modern innovations that are poised to change the way we think about luxury, elegance and comfort. Incorporating advanced technology into your home is essential when elevating its overall style, design and functionality. What better way to create a futuristic environment than by living like an astronaut in your own home. You can do exactly that with the new Flotation Tub with ZERO DIMENSION from TOTO. Made from proprietary Galaline man-made marble, the stylish tub combines a luxury spa aesthetic with space-age technology that simulates zero gravity by offering bathers a weightless experience. After more than a decade’s research, TOTO discovered that a unique posture - with the reclining body stabilized and the hips, knees and ankles flexed - reduced the joints’ mechanical energy/load to nearly zero. Astronauts sleep in this position; it enables the most relaxing rest possible. Cerebral blood flow studies show activity in the left ventrolateral prefrontal cortex - the part of the brain responsible for language - is dramatically reduced, enabling a

meditative state. With the TOTO Flotation Tub as a bathroom focal point that showcases luxurious design, add sleek accessories to enhance your space, such as a smart mirror that doubles as a TV monitor. Imagine checking the weather as you put on your makeup or watching the news as you shave, creating a dual functionality and must-have futuristic design component. Space-age aesthetic is all about blending minimalistic features with high-tech devices, allowing for a seamless transition between design and innovation. But why stop with just the bathroom? Consumers will continue to see a vast range of technological innovations throughout 2019, inspiring home transformations that are out of this world! To reach new worlds, innovation is key, especially when it comes to energy efficiency. For state-of-theart elements both inside and outside your home, consider installing the highly anticipated solar windows that will collect solar energy while remaining transparent. The windows utilize photovoltaic technology, similar to what’s being incorporated into

solar blinds and solar roofs. These kinds of energy-conscious building materials will add a space-age look and functionality to your home, bringing you into the next century. Make everyday life more efficient with a home automation system, a rapidly growing innovative technology that allows users to manage various household settings with one single command. Users have control of their entire house at their fingertips

including their security, lighting, climate and entertainment systems, even their household appliances.(BPT) By incorporating an innovative and design-forward centerpiece like TOTO’s Flotation Tub, along with additional subtle, sleek tech accessories and gadgets into your living space, the space-age, futuristic home can become your reality.

PLANNNING THE PERFECT GAME DAY

You’ve waited all summer for this but now it’s finally here again - the sports season trifecta. That’s right, football season, post-season baseball, the return of hockey and new professional and college basketball seasons on the horizon are all happening at once. It’s a sportslover’s dream and for you there’s no better way to spend the upcoming weekends than at home watching your favorite team play. But is the environment in which you and your friends enjoy the game up to the level of the event itself? If it isn’t, consider these five tips to up your in-home game-day experience this year: * Get creative with your seating. Chairs around the television set is amateur stuff. This year give your home that true game-day feel by setting up designated seating for your friends based on team affiliation. You can also build a simple stage to create a stadium seating environment, perfect for rooms that are deeper than they are wide. Add plenty of table space to place food and drinks and your viewing room will be perfectly suited for game day. * Upgrade your viewing experience. Watching games at home is hotter

than ever because of the experience a top television provides. If you don’t have one, then make a new TV your first round pick this year. The LG 2018 OLED TV lineup features sophisticated designs and super brain power to complement its stunning picture quality. With an Alpha 9 intelligent processor - LG’s most powerful ever - LG’s OLED AI provides true-to-life images coupled with rich colors, sharpness and depth. Even more, these TVs are smart! They have LG’s ThinQ technology, Google Assistant built right in and are also compatible with Amazon Alexa so you can use voice commands to control TV functions, search for content or tap other connected IoT devices like lights, robo-vacs and a lot more all from the comfort of your couch. Don’t want to wait for the ticker to get updated on other game scores? Ask the TV and it will update you immediately without you missing a second of your game. The LG Super UHD lineup also offers some of the best televisions available with screen sizes from 49 to a stunning 86 inches and superior viewing angles for your ticket to the best seat away from the game.

* Focus on food. Having tables ready to hold food is a great first step but now what food will you place on them? Instead of game-day mainstays this year, opt for healthier choices that don’t sacrifice on taste. Bake your chicken wings instead of frying them and enjoy potato skins made with sweet potatoes instead of conventional ones. Subtle choices like these will allow you to enjoy all the game-day staples in a healthy, delicious fashion. * Set a game within the game. A little multi-tasking on game day can be fun. If you play in a fantasy league you’re probably already invested in the performance of certain players, but you can make the entire game more interesting by challenging your

friends to guess the score at the end of each quarter or challenge your friends to competitions based on team stats that you all can follow throughout the game. * Have plans for halftime. Halftime, the 7th inning stretch, and the break between periods is normally downtime, so put a little excitement into it. Plan a mini game to take place during halftime, get new food from the kitchen or simply go outside and throw a football around for a while. Any of these activities will keep you in the spirit of the game and get you ready to go for the second half. CREATIVE WAYS TO TAKE YOUR RAISED BED AND PLANTER GARDENING TO NEW HEIGHTS Generations of space-challenged gardeners have relied on raised beds and planting boxes to grow a harvest of vegetables, fruits and herbs - even in the tightest spaces. Vertical gardening gave us a whole new way to garden in tight spots, by encouraging plants to grow up, rather than spread out. Now, by marrying the two techniques, you can create a visually stunning, artistic display of gardening prowess that will keep your table full of fresh produce throughout the summer. Building the foundation A well-built, durable planting foundation, such as a raised bed or planting box made from Western Red Cedar, is an essential starting point. Decide where yours will go and start building. You can find free project plans online to help you build the frame for a raised bed or a planting box. Whatever style of planter you build, it’s important to choose a quality construction material. Western Red Cedar is often the choice of savvy gardeners because it’s naturally rot resistant as well as durable and easy to work with. It needs no chemical finishes or paints to preserve or beautify it, and is harvested from sustainably managed forests. Learn more and find free project plans at Realcedar.com. Simple steps onward and upward With a good foundation in place, it’s time to consider all the ways you can turn your raised bed or planter into a vertical masterpiece. Adding a simple trellis to your raised bed or planting box is an easy way to maximize your

growing space. For example, you can plant shrubtype plants like peppers in a row in the front portion of the planter, then add a trellis in the back portion and encourage vining veggies like beans, peas and cucumbers to grow up the structure. For larger raised beds, you can build a vineyard style pergola above the bed. A sturdy pergola made from Western Red Cedar can support a variety of substantial plants such as squash, but you don’t have to be limited to fruits and veggies that grow on vines. Affix small boxes or even burlap bags to allow for greater variety in your vertical garden. Loftier ambitions Is your raised bed nestled against a wall? Or perhaps your planting box perches on one side of your backyard deck. You can add a free-standing wall by building a cedar frame and stretching hex wire across the frame. Vines will readily climb the wire, but you can also attach terra cotta pots to the wire to hold herbs, small vegetables and even flowers. In a variation on the trellis concept, you can build a framework with multiple rows of narrow cedar troughs above your raised bed or planting box; the troughs make a great growing spot for herbs. You can also create a stepped planter by building a series of boxes in graduated sizes and then stacking them atop each other widest to narrowest. Or, for a more modern look, build a contemporary ladder-style vertical garden with box-shaped removable planters.

Veteran gardeners who are also seasoned doit-yourselfers can go all out by building a pergola. Western Red Cedar pergolas can go anywhere, take up far less ground space than a traditional garden and are wonderful vertical gardening pieces. Just plant your favorite vining fruit or vegetable at the base of each post and train the vines upward as they grow. One out of every three American households gardens - 36 million households - according to the National Gardening Association. With 9 million households in urban area participating in gardening, it’s a great time to explore creative ways to bring vertical gardening and raised beds or planter boxes together. - (BPT)

Game Day Eats and Treats SCORE MAJOR POINTS WITH DELICIOUS DISHES

FAMILY FEATURES

f the crew is coming over to root for your favorite team, it may be time to spice up the menu. Whether you’re hosting the weekend get-together or watching the game after work, switch up your typical spread and serve something new to leave your guests cheering for more. When it comes to choosing an ingredient that can lend a winning assist to nearly any dish and score you some major points, look no further than California Ripe Olives. Variety is key when mapping out food for a crowd, regardless of the event. Plan

on serving one main course and two sides, and consider no-fuss options like chips and dips. If there are kids in attendance, make sure there is something neutral for even the pickiest eaters to snack on. However, try your best to avoid anything that needs a knife and fork to eat – finger foods typically work best when the game is on and conversation is flowing. The mild and unique taste of California Ripe Olives lends itself well to many different flavor pairings, such as these recipes for Pulled Pork Sandwiches with Peach-Olive Jam, Easy Olive Bread and Sun-Dried Tomato and Olive Tapenade.

Whether your guests are fans of spicy, mild, sweet or savory, the only limit is your imagination when you pull a can of olives from the pantry. Family farms across California grow 95 percent of the ripe olives consumed in the United States. Each can is a labor of love. Multi-generational family farms work with family-owned canneries in California to produce each can and ensure only the highest quality olives make it from the farm to your game-day table. HEALTHY LIVING HABITS THAT WORK

When it comes to advice about healthy living, there are opinions nearly every place you turn. Unfortunately, a great deal of that information is based on fad diets and trendy workouts that may deliver quick results but don’t promote a sustainable, healthy lifestyle. The medical community generally agrees that slow and steady is the way to win the race toward healthy living. Adopting a broad set of healthier habits can deliver results over time and foster a new way of living that promotes your overall health and wellbeing. Aim for balance. A diet that combines healthy levels of protein and carbohydrates from all the food groups is the surest way to deliver your body the vitamins and nutrients you need for optimal health. The Dietary Guidelines for Americans call for an eating plan that is centered on fruits, vegetables, whole grains and reduced-fat dairy foods, rounded out by lean meats, poultry, fish, beans, eggs and nuts for protein. When planning your meals, be sure to limit saturated fats, trans fats, cholesterol, sodium and added sugar. Know when to say when. Building a healthy lifestyle is about more than eating the right foods. It also means keeping your calorie count in check.

That means keeping the amount you eat and the portion size in mind. Work with your doctor or a nutritionist to determine your body’s true caloric needs, which can vary depending on numerous factors such as your age, activity level and overall health. Then get smart about the portion sizes that will help you stay within those parameters. Initially, you may want to weigh out portions but soon you’ll be able to recognize and adjust your portions on sight. Set your body in motion. Increasing your activity level not only helps burn calories and boosts your metabolism, it also helps tone your muscles and improve overall body condition by promoting healthy blood flow. The exact amount of exercise you need will vary depending on your goals, age and physical ability. You may need to work up to the optimal level, which according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is 150 minutes of moderate activity or 75 minutes of vigorous activity a week for most adults. Replace what you lose. A strong workout may help you shed calories, but it also can deplete your body of essential fluids. Staying hydrated is crucial to keep your body functioning properly, from regulating your body temperature to providing the

lubrication your joints and muscles need to keep you in motion. Rehydrating during and after exercise is important for getting the most out of your workout. For example, try incorporating an electrolyte beverage, such as Propel Electrolyte Water, which helps replace what is lost in sweat and supports hydration by stimulating thirst and promoting fluid retention. The 10 flavors contain no calories and provide B vitamins to support metabolism as part of a daily diet and antioxidant vitamins C and

E. Learn more at PropelWater.com. Give yourself a break. Most experts agree it’s OK to indulge and enjoy your favorite treat occasionally. Skipping a day at the gym won’t end your efforts either. The key is to make those allowances an exception rather than the norm, skipping one day instead of three or eating a sliver of pie, not a giant slice. Rewarding yourself within reason is a good way to stay motivated and create a sustainable healthy lifestyle.

3 STEPS TOWARD BETTER SLEEP

With overscheduled days full of early-morning conference calls and endless to-do lists, it’s impossible to avoid the stress that comes with working hard. Hand-in-hand with all that pressure, a lack of quality sleep can lead to aches and pains, stiffness, sore muscles, tingling or numbness in your extremities, general fatigue, as well as an increased risk of getting sick. According to the National Sleep Foundation, the average adult needs 7-9 hours of sleep a night. In fact, a survey by Mattress Firm showed a correlation between stress and those who receive less sleep than recommended. Twice as many stressed people get fewer than five hours of sleep each night compared to those who are not stressed. What’s more, those who are stressed are five times more likely to experience insomnia at least once a month. The proper amount and quality of sleep can have a dramatic impact on your life. If you’re stressed and experiencing trouble sleeping, these tips from the sleep experts at Mattress Firm can help ensure you’re getting the rest you need to improve your Page 28

sleep health. Minimize technology use before you head to bed. The survey found that quality of sleep is negatively impacted because of stress-induced technology use. For example, those who are stressed are 60 percent more likely to watch TV an hour before bed, more than twice as likely to post to social media an hour before bed, twice as likely to check email an hour before bed and more than 40 percent more likely to sleep with their phones next to their beds. Ensure your body is getting adequate support. What felt comfortable to sleep on eight years ago may not provide the support your body needs today. Your weight, pressure points, ailments, etc. can change over the course of time, so it’s important to check the mattress tag. If it’s more than 8 years old, it is time to replace it. Another way to make sure your body has the proper support and alignment is to figure out your sleep position and select the right pillows to support your body. This can help alleviate tossing and turning, and provide a more comfortable night of sleep. Avoid nighttime snacking. About

The Coto de Caza News

24 percent of extremely stressed people indulge in a snack an hour before bed, according to the survey. There are many food and drink options that encourage a good night’s sleep more than others, such as tryptophan-rich foods like dairy, nuts and seeds, bananas, honey and eggs. Conversely, foods and medications with caffeine and foods with high-fat content should be avoided. The foods you choose are

important, but also pay attention to the timing of when you eat and drink. Even fighting stress with an afternoon espresso can affect your ability to sleep hours later when your head hits the pillow. AWARD-WINNING INTERIOR DESIGNER REVEALS 5 WAYS TO A MUST-HAVE MEDIA ROOM It’s hard to believe that at one time, Americans watched television by huddling around a small box with poor picture quality and sound. Even nicer televisions were tucked in the corner of living rooms where noise from the kitchen, kids running around the house and other distractions constantly interfered. How we watch television and movies at home has greatly changed in the past decade. Today’s consumergrade audiovisual technology is a full-body, multi-sensory experience. The sound, visuals and comfortable seating achieved in home theaters rival, and sometimes exceed, that of movie theaters. Media rooms are no longer the luxury of the wealthy. They have become a standard in many middle class households throughout the country, and are on the top of the list for many people remodeling their homes. Today, the media room has become a multipurpose space where families can watch a movie together, kids can play their video games or friends can congregate to watch the big game. Whatever your interest, a newly renovated media room can provide the right space for your gathering. But to achieve the ultimate experience, there’s more than just the latest digital gadgets and comfy seating to consider. To design the proper media room, TV personality and award-

winning interior designer Anitra Mecadon offers the following tips. Start at the studs. You’ll probably spend the majority of your time deciding what kind of screen and speaker components to install, but no matter how cutting edge your audiovisual equipment is, you have to properly house it in order to realize its full potential. For this, your media room needs the right walls. Just like Ultra High Definition (UHD) technology represents how far televisions have come, PURPLE SoundBreak XP drywall made by National Gypsum represents how far drywall technology has advanced. This revolutionary drywall reduces the noise heard between rooms. This means you won’t be disturbed by the dishwasher or washing machine while watching your favorite movies. And likewise, people in other rooms won’t hear those powerful speakers! Hire an expert. Even if you’re savvy with electronics and have set up speakers and receivers in the past, play it safe and hire an expert to properly install all the components in your media room. You might need more powerful circuits installed, or an expert’s touch to perfectly balance and sync the sound between your television, speaker and receiver. Plus, they’ll know how to conceal wires and give your room that clean look. Protect your investment. Many media rooms are in a basement

where mold and moisture are a constant threat. The space needs to remain dry to provide a healthy environment. To keep your family and valuable electronics safe, it’s a wise idea to put up drywall that can actively guard against these dangers. PURPLE XP drywall made by National Gypsum is mold and moisture resistant, providing added protection for your investment. Buy a television. Because you want more of a movie theater feel, you may be tempted to buy a projector and a screen. But most people who do this end up replacing it with a television. Why? A high resolution smart TV ultimately provides more clarity, better picture and 3D.

Make sure you have the right lighting. From color-changing LED lightbulbs to dimmers on sound bars, there is no end to how creative you can get with the lighting in your media room. No matter what you do, be sure you can control the light in order to accommodate a variety of situations: dark for the dramatic scenes and just enough light for when the pizza arrives. To really achieve the full effect that a modern media room can offer, tear down the walls and start at the studs. The right drywall is as important as the right speaker. FUEL YOUR DAY WITH 5 ENERGIZING SUPERFOODS With groggy eyes and slow movements, you peel yourself out of bed each day. Between the morning and afternoon slumps, you long for the energy of your youth. Does this sound familiar? Then you’ll be glad to know about five superfoods that can help energize you from the inside out, so you can feel your best all day. As a registered dietician, nutrition expert at On Target Living, and author of the newly released cookbook “Target To Table: Delicious & Healthy Meals One Superfood at a Time,” Kristen Johnson understands that food plays a big role in health and wellness, and believes there’s no such thing as anti-aging - only aging well. Here are the five energizing superfoods Johnson recommends to fuel your body the healthy way. 1. Ancient grains “Ancient grains have remained virtually untouched and unchanged for thousands of years compared to modern wheat or corn that’s been bred for higher yield and drought resistance,” says Johnson. Ancient grains are extremely high in protein, fiber and minerals. Johnson notes these grains can be helpful in managing inflammation and are a great source of energizing B vitamins for the brain and body. Ancient grains include spelt, quinoa, chia, amaranth, buckwheat, wheat berries, kamut, freekah, bulgur, barley, sorghum, teff, millet, oats, wild

rice and farro. These grains can be used to make hot dishes similar to oatmeal, or can be cooked and used in salads and entrees. 2. Omega-3 fats “Mitochondria are the powerhouses of the human cell, meaning they supply the body with energy. The better you feed the mitochondria, the healthier and better performing the cell will be,” explains Johnson. “Cell membranes must be permeable to allow the cell to be fed and allow ‘fuel’ for the mitochondria. The omega-3 fats EPA & DHA found in fish and algae are a great way to make the cell soft and permeable. This will help to fuel the body and improve energy and stamina.” Our bodies cannot make omega-3 fats naturally, and therefore they must come from food or supplements, notes Johnson. “Because fresh, cold-water, wild-caught fish is not always available, I often recommend a high-quality supplement like Nordic Naturals orange-flavored Arctic Cod Liver Oil,” says Johnson. Cod liver oil has naturally occurring vitamin D that is needed to absorb calcium, an important factor for bone health. Nordic Naturals Arctic Cod Liver Oil is a great source of the omega-3s EPA and DHA that help contributes to a healthy heart and brain, hormonal balance, and a healthy immune response. Simply take 1 tablespoon daily or add to your

smoothies or salad dressings. 3. Spirulina and chlorella “Spirulina and chlorella are freshwater algae that are super high in chlorophyll, which is extremely energizing for the body,” says Johnson. “Because spirulina and chlorella are cell-builders, they also help to build the immune system and can help prevent you from getting sick.” Spirulina and chlorella are also very cleansing and detoxifying, which helps improve digestion. Because both are high in protein, they are also great for vegans. Swallow (don’t chew) the tablets with water 15-20 minutes prior to eating. Aim for 10-20 tablets a day. 4. Cacao Cacao is the raw, unprocessed form of chocolate. It is high in magnesium, manganese, zinc, and iron. Johnson notes that cacao has many potential health benefits, including supporting brain and heart health, mood, healthy body weight, and energy. Cacao can also enhance relaxation and promote a better night’s sleep. Because it is high in magnesium, it has also been shown to help build muscle and aid in muscle recovery. Cacao also contains more antioxidants than red wine, green tea and blueberries. Cacao nibs are easy to consume and can be mixed in oatmeal, smoothies or trail mix. You can also blend cacao nibs or cacao powder

with coconut or almond milk and a little bit of honey in a blender for a healthy version of chocolate milk or hot chocolate. 5. Coconut “Coconuts contain a healthy saturated fat high in lauric, capric, and caprylic acids, which have antiviral and antifungal properties and help contribute to healthy digestion,” says Johnson. “Coconuts also contain medium-chain fatty acids (MCTs) that can enhance energy and metabolism.” Coconut water, coconut milk and shredded coconut are all great options to add to your diet. Using virgin coconut oil is also a great way to sneak in more coconut when cooking, baking, or snacking. Simply use it in place of oil in cooking and butter in baking. It’s great for spreading on bread and for making popcorn, too. - (BPT)
