Chairman’s Report

Hello and welcome / croeso to this JD Cymru North fixture against our nearest local rivals, Mold Alex. I would also like to extend a special welcome to the officials, players, and supporters of the Alex.

2023 has, so far, seen us go on a three-match unbeaten run of games starting with a 3-1 home victory over Prestatyn Town, followed by a 2-1 win at Chirk and a very creditable 1-1 draw at home against 2nd placed Llandudno FC.

We are currently in the middle of the January transfer window, and it is inevitable that other clubs will try and tempt some of our players to move away. To date we have lost talented winger Will Owen and keeper Ryan Goldston, who have both moved on in order to secure first team football. Another departure is Sam Rickett who has left to try and help Airbus regain some credibility following their disastrous Cymru Premier campaign - good luck and best wishes to all three. Another departure from the club is media guru and goalkeeper coach, Clive Davies, we are going to miss you Clive!

Tomorrow there is two more home games scheduled! Our unbeaten Reserves team take on 2nd placed Nantlle Vale, and our young DS team play Llay Welfare.

All the best, enjoy the game!

Gaffer’s Report

I would like to start by welcoming all players, committee and supporters along from Mold today. We come into this game in good form after starting the new year with two wins and a draw against Prestatyn, Chirk and Llandudno respectively.

Tonight’s game will be very tough as Mold are a very good side with plenty of dangers, we know we can get the better of them if we are at our best as we showed in the reverse fixture when we won 2-1 away at their place.

Mold come into this fixture in good form themselves and will make it a fantastic game, I’m sure”.

We would also like to welcome a couple of new signings in Dylan Jones from Llandyrnog and Liam Ellis who joins on loan from Flint Town. We also want to send best wishes to 3 players that have left during the window in the shape of Will Owen, Sam Rickett and Ryan Goldston who have gone on to pastures new. Finally, I would like to send a tribute to Clive Davies who has sadly left the club and he will be missed as although he wasn’t a player, he was one of our best signings and he took the club to a whole new level on the social platforms.

The fantastic fans of ours have come out in the numbers in the cold conditions since the new year and we hope we can reward their support with 3 points tonight!

UP THE TOWN!

Mold Alexandra : A BRIEF HISTORY

In 1929, Mold Alexandra adopted its name and blue and white kit colours with a report suggesting a decision to play matches on or near the present ground of ‘Alyn Park’. The Alex joined the Welsh National League, Wrexham Area (WNL) in 1947. Alex player Joe Allen played for the Wales national team during this period. In 1979 a grand dinner celebrated the club’s fiftieth year, with guest Joe Mercer. In an exciting 1980’s period; the Alex won two League Championships, a League Cup and two regional trophies. These successes resulted in Mold Alex being invited to join the newly created Cymru Alliance league for season 1990-91. This meant playing in the top division for north and mid Wales’ competitive football. In 1992 a first nation-wide league was formed (‘the League of Wales’) with Mold Alex being delighted to become one of its founder members. The Alex enjoyed competition in the League of Wales for three seasons, more distant opponents including Inter Cardiff, Barry Town, Llanelli and Ebbw Vale. In 1995 Mold Alex played once more in the Cymru Alliance, but following relegation after three seasons the club had to fight for admission back to the Welsh National League. The then rules dictated that of the two teams looking to rejoin the WNL there would only be a place for one of them. The Alex refused to join a different league system choosing to play in a division of mainly WNL reserve teams. This gamble played off and the Alex was promoted up to the renamed WNL Premier Division at the end of one season.

Between 2002 and 2010 the club had two successful spells in the Cymru Alliance, but in 2010 an FAW change to the number of clubs in the League of Wales also affected the size of the Cymru Alliance. A restructuring drama resulted in Mold Alex in thirteenth place losing its status as a Cymru Alliance member of seventeen clubs.

In 2014 Mold was promoted once more to the Cymru Alliance after winning the Championship of the WNL Premier on a thrilling final day of the season. The following season the first team won the President’s Cup and North East Wales Cup. In 2019 The Alex was successful in reaching the final of the Premier Division Cup. Mold Alex reserve teams have been very successful in recent years, winning their Division Championship Cup on three occasions and a Division Cup. A Mold Alex Reserves and Colts team won their Championship Division Cup in 2015.

Volunteer-led children’s football is provided from the age of six. Several match trophies have been won by the older football groups. The club’s volunteers support charitable cause by hosting the annual bonfire & firework display veteran six a side veteran competitions. 

With the return of football and restructuring of the Wales’ football system from 2021, the Alex reserve team has competed well amongst teams representing high ranking clubs and was runner up in the final 2022 Horace Wynne Cup competition. Supported by the Alex strong management and coaching team and against very competitive opposition last season, the Alex first team became Champions of the Lock Stock Ardal North West League, FAW Trophy winners and were runners up in the Ardal Northern League Cup final.
