Authors have given us heroes that we love to love, but where would they be without the villains that challenge? Using the plots from movies, comics, and stories, discover the qualities that create great heroes and great villains. Finish the week with a presentation that blends the best of both worlds in a celebration of the contrast it takes to make a great story.

The minions are loose in the land of books! Looking to help literature’s most despicable characters like the Wicked Witch of the West, the Big Bad Wolf, and Captain Hook, and taking over their stories. Through the use of pantomime and a language of their own, you will create an original script and show describing their exploits. Find a pair of overalls and a yellow shirt and join the minions.

Bikini Bottom is the place and now is the time! Since 1999, SpongeBob has been absorbed into our culture with nautical puns and shanties that inspire our inner mollusk. Join our “school” as it dives to the ocean floor for a tsunami of fun!

In 1900, L. Frank Baum created the Land of Oz and its characters, then sent a young girl named Dorothy off to visit for a grand adventure. Spend this week writing your own stories around the Tin Man, the Scarecrow, the Cowardly Lion, Dorothy, Toto (and then some) developing and performing skits that tell the stories before the story we all know and love. Enjoy a sneak peak of the summer production “The Wizard of Oz.”

DESIGN, DISCOVER & PRODUCE Camps to engage and encourage young performers and develop creative thinkers! INSTRUMENTAL JAZZ CAMP

Ages: 11 – 14, $275.00 Class is limited to 30 participants June 8 – 12 • 9am – 4pm Final Performance: The New Murray Theatre* “Jazz isn’t dead, it just smells funny.” Jazz has been around for over 100 years, but what keeps it alive is the creative spirit of improvisation. Learn the art of creating your own music through an understanding of the harmonic changes of jazz standards. Discover the secrets that make you a better musician and make music above and beyond what is on the written page. A minimum of two years experience playing an instrument is required. Participation assures an invitation to join the Ruth Eckerd Hall Jazz Band. Camp includes jazz instruction including theory and history, plus workshops with visiting artists. Past workshops have featured Chick Corea, Dave Koz, and Eric Darius.

PERCUSSION ENSEMBLE

Ages: 13–18, $275.00 Class is limited to 30 participants June 15 – 19 • 9am – 4pm Final Performance: The New Murray Theatre* Rhythm, melody, and timbre unite for a sound that is both contemporary and original. Using both classical and contemporary repertoire, students will develop techniques and skills used to rehearse and perform literature written specifically for percussion. Emphasis is also placed on the development of the group dynamic and working cooperatively to achieve a quality ensemble sound. Director: John Lluvera

NEXT STOP BROADWAY: LET IT GO

Ages: 11 – 14, $525.00 Class is limited to 40 participants June 8 – 26 • 9am – 4pm Performances: Thu, June 25 • 7pm | Fri, June 26 •2 & 7pm Final Performance: The New Murray Theatre*

The stage never bothered me anyway! Join us for a three week, intensive performance journey as we collectively create a two act Broadway musical revue and let your talent go! Next Stop Broadway emphasizes the building of students’ confidence as they engage all three components of musical theater: acting, singing and dancing. This summer our young performers will be guided through the history of musical theater from the 1920’s and through each decade to today. Each performer will have the opportunity to create an original character, interpret songs, and dance various styles of choreography.

Ages: 10 – 14, $275.00 June 22 – 26 • 9 am – 4 pm Final Performance: The New Murray Theatre* Look who’s in Treble! Music for the bold; Music for the daring; Music without all the instruments to hide behind! Get your ears on and join the Bellas and Treblemakers. Make music with the only chord that matters- the vocal chord, and sing hit music A Capella! *Instrumental Jazz Camp, Percussion Ensemble, Pitch Perfect, and Next Stop Broadway performances are ticketed events.Tickets can be purchased from the Ruth Eckerd Box Office prior to performance.

The Early Years: Roots Rock Ages: 10 – 14, $180.00 June 29 - July 2 • 9am – 3pm

Bring your guitars, your voices, your basses, your keyboards, your huddled masses yearning to rock free! Start your journey into the world of Rock where you should…at the beginning! Using covers of early rock and blues tunes, discover the artists that paved the way for everything that has happened since!

STAR WARS: LIGHT SABER COMBAT Ages 11 - 14 $225.00 July 6 – 10 • 9am – 3pm

Every great fight scene in every film was planned and choreographed. Each actor must know every move, every countermove, every duck, and every dodge. Work with our staff as we develop the techniques that make stage combat safe for the actors and realistic for the audience. Using Star Wars as a theme, we will develop a script and performance that demonstrates the art of stage combat.

DIVERGENT…WHAT’S YOUR FACTION? Ages 11 - 14 $225.00 July 13 – 17 • 9am – 3pm

Are you Amity, Abnegation, Candor, Dauntless, or Erudite? After a “briefing” you will be assigned your faction for activities that suit your calling. Throughout the week, you will be assigned to the other factions to discover your talents there as well… Thursday and Friday will be spent creating an original script around the concept of Divergency…. Can anyone be classified as only one faction? 10

Dance TAP, JAZZ, HIP-HOP

A summer favorite! Students learn street dance, combining hip-hop, jazz, and cutting- edge tap into an explosive display of free-style footwork and dynamic choreography. While working hard and having fun, students develop self-confidence and presentation skills. TAP SHOES REQUIRED.

WHEN YOU GET THE CHANCE - DANCE! Ages: 11–14, $225.00 June 22 – 26 • 9 am – 3pm

Get on up and “Twist and Shout”! This is the place to start! This is the place to let it all go! This week we will experiment with dance steps from all time periods, starting with some basics then seeing where they lead us. This camp is NOT only for girls!! It takes two to feel the beat and let it move you! Don’t be afraid to come dancing!

TAP DANCIN’ IN THE STREETS Ages: 5 – 7, $225.00 July 13 – 17 • 9am – 3pm

This summer we take an abstract look at the timeless classic about Dorothy Gale from Kansas who travels to the magical Land of Oz. Throughout her journey she meets a good witch, a bad witch, a scarecrow, a tin man, and a lion and many other Ozians. The fabulous four are off on a journey to the Wizard of Oz to ask him for a brain, a heart, the nerve, and a home! With a three week intensive rehearsal period, the actors will focus on vocal production and character development, creating an expressive ensemble that brings these characters to life, captivating audiences, young and old alike. Come journey “over the rainbow” with us and find out that there really is “no place like home.”

On-Camera Acting ON-CAMERA ACTING 101 Ages 8 – 10 $180.00 June 29 – July 2 • 9 am – 3 pm Screening: Thu, July 2

With Acting 101 you will learn the basic tools of the best professional actors: improvisation, characterization, script analysis, and on-camera technique. • You will learn memorization and imagination techniques that enhance other aspects of your life as well: imagination work, relaxation, stretching, breathing, movement, vocal exploration, sensory work, ensemble games and more. • You will explore the best ingredients of great acting, including: character development, urgency/heightened energy, specificity, discovery and subtext, spontaneity, vulnerability, creating relationships with other actors/characters and more. • You will understand what “in the moment” means as an actor, learning to connect with other actors through improvisation and relationship building. • You will discover things within yourself you may not have realized were there, will be surrounded by a positive, supportive environment in which to make new friends, and may even come away with that urge to explore a more professional path.

Commercials are among the most prolific and profitable types of work for an actor, however, few actors take the time to properly train and develop their skills for commercial work. Areas of focus will include: understanding your target market, how to best focus your performance on the selling message, camera technique specifically for commercials, product technique, analyzing advertising copy, and delivering a solid, natural, believable message.

PERPARING TO AUDITION: FILM AND TV Ages 11 - 14 $225.00 July 6 – July 10 • 9am – 3pm Screening: Thu, July 10

• Do you feel anxious when you know you have an audition to prepare? • Do you panic when asked to cold read? • Do you feel you have less control in a cold reading than a prepared piece? • Do you focus on memorizing your lines, then worry about forgetting them? • Have you lost your place on the page and panicked? • Are you less than totally confident when you walk into • an audition? If you answered YES to any of the above, then your approach to acting is actually getting in the way of your acting, and is keeping you from delivering the best of yourself in an audition. We’ll help you discover how to best prepare so that you won’t even think about the page or worry about forgetting anything….you will be rock-solid ready and your creative juices will flow.
