Letter from the Chair

I want to wish everyone a delightful and prosperous New Year. On behalf of the Rutgers and RWJBarnabas Neurosurgery group, we look forward to another year of growth and academic excellence.

Easily the best news from 2019 was the merger of the residency program between St. Barnabas Medical Center and Rutgers Robert Wood Johnson Medical School and New Jersey Medical School. This brought us to eighteen total residents, and we are thrilled as the integration continues to move smoothly. We added six faculty members over the last seventeen months, and are anticipating adding another four in 2020. Last year, amongst our entire faculty, over 100 journal articles were published. We are grateful to all of our leaders for their wonderful academic contributions, and I hope this trend continues.

We are really looking forward to the upcoming series of CME Events scheduled for this year. On April 30 and May 1 2020, we will be hosting Global Neurosurgery: Ask Not for Whom the Bell Tolls, in Jersey City, NJ. This symposium is intended to educate, innovate, and foster a deeper understanding in global neurosurgery. We anticipate a number of dignitaries to attend and address the various aspects of neurosurgery.

Recently, our new website was launched, providing a better system for referrals. I look forward to working with all of you and improving patient care outcomes, safety, quality, and academic productivity. Thank you again and best wishes.

Visiting Professors

Throughout the year, the department will host prominent figures in the field of neurological surgery lecturing on their areas of interest. The visiting professors will participate in journal clubs and patient care conferences throughout the day, and discuss interesting papers and cases with faculty, residents and staff. Guest speakers typically participate in the usual department conferences on Academic Day, Wednesday, and participate in a dinner with residents and faculty afterward.

On Wednesday, November 13th 2019, the Department of Neurosurgery at Rutgers Robert Wood Johnson Medical School and Rutgers New Jersey Medical School, hosted Dr. Jeffrey Bruce, MD, for the Visiting Professor lecture series. Dr. Bruce presented his lecture “Exploring the Seat of Man’s Soul: Observations on Pineal Region Surgery” at

the CINJ Lecture Hall in New Brunswick, NJ. The lecture was attended by clinical and research faculty, residents, and fellows.

Our first Visiting Professor this year was Dr. Karin Muraszko, who was born in Jersey City, New Jersey. She received her undergraduate degree from Yale University. She then continued to Columbia University in New York where she received her medical degree and completed her residency training in Neurological Surgery and completed fellowships in pediatric neurosurgery. Dr. Muraszko is an internationally renowned speaker who specializes in pediatric neurosurgery. She was the first woman to head a neurosurgery department at any medical school in the US. Dr. Muraszko currently serves as the Professor and Chair of the Department of Neurological Surgery at the University of Michigan, and was the first woman to serve as chair of a neurosurgery department in the country.

Dr. Grady was appointed the Charles Harrison Frazier Professor & Chairman of the Department of Neurosurgery at the Perelman School of Medicine, University of Pennsylvania in March 1999. He received his undergraduate degree from the University of California, San Diego and medical degree from Georgetown University School of Medicine.

He trained in Neurological Surgery at the University of Virginia from 1981-1987 and was a faculty member at the University of Washington from 1987-1999. He is Board Certified by the American Board of Neurological Surgeons and is a fellow of the American College of Surgeons. Dr. Grady served as the Secretary for American Board of Neurological Surgery from 2004-2008, and was appointed Chairman of the ABNS from 2008-2009. Dr. Grady served as a member of the M. SEAN GRADY, M.D.

Visiting Professor Series Schedule March 11th, 2020 | New Jersey Medical School Dr. Harry R. van Loveren presently serves as the David W. Cahill Professor and Chairman of the Department of Neurosurgery and Brain Repair at the University of South Florida Health, as well as oversees the Surgical SubSpecialties in the Departments of Urology, Otolaryngology, and Ophthalmology. After completing medical school, he trained with the Mayfield Clinic (then the Mayfield Neurological Institute) and as Fellow in the neurophysiology laboratory of Jean Sigfried and Helmut Haas in Zurich. He remained at the Mayfield Clinic and participated in its amalgamation with the University of Cincinnati Department of Neurosurgery. His clinical and research interests include pain, functional neurosurgery, trauma, vascular neurosurgery, and skull base surgery.

April 1st, 2020 | St. Barnabas Medical Center Dr. James Ecklund serves as the Medical Director of Neurosciences at Inova and Professor and Chairman of Neurosciences at Inova Fairfax Medical Campus. Prior to joining Inova Medical Group, he served as professor and chairman of the Neurosurgery Program of the National Capital Consortium, which includes Walter Reed Army Medical Center, National Naval Medical Center and the Uniformed Services University. He is a retired colonel in the U.S Army and was deployed as a neurosurgeon to both Afghanistan and Iraq. His program received the vast majority of American neurotrauma casualties. Dr. Ecklund's primary clinical and research interests include complex spine, cerebrovascular disease and neurotrauma with an emphasis on blast and penetrating injury.

May 28th, 2020 | Graduation Speaker Dr. Robert Spetzler is a world-renowned neurosurgeon who specializes in cerebrovascular disease and skull base tumors. He has been involved in pioneering the technique of hypothermia and cardiac arrest for the treatment of difficult brain lesions. He served as president and CEO of Barrow Neurological Institute from 1986 to 2017. He is also emeritus chair of neurosurgery at the Phoenix campus of The University of Arizona College of Medicine.

Dr. Dirk De Ridder is the Neurological Foundation Chair of Neurosurgery in Dunedin School of Medicine, New Zeland. In his clinical capacity, Dr. De Ridder is responsible for skull base surgery (vestibular schwannomas, pituitary surgery), and microvascular decompression surgery. His research interests are centered on a Darwinian predictive brain model with Bayesian updating to adapt to an ever changing environment. This model is the basis to understand common pathophysiological mechanisms clustering groups of pathologies, such as thalamocortical dysrhythmias (pain, tinnitus, epilepsy, depression, Parkinson's disease, schizophrenia) or obsessive compulsive spectrum disorder (such as addiction, OCD, or eating disorders).

July 22nd, 2020 | New Jersey Medical School Dr. Carl Heilman is the Neurosurgeon-in-Chief at Tufts Medical Center. He is a Professor and the Chairman of the Department of Neurosurgery. He is internationally renowned for neurosurgical excellence. Dr. Heilman specializes in surgery for skull base tumors, pituitary tumors, meningiomas, schwannomas and Chiari 1 malformations. He has served as the President of the North American Skull Base Surgery Society, the Society of University Neurosurgeons, the Boston Society of Neurology and Psychiatry, and the New England Neurosurgical Society. Dr. Heilman is board certified in Neurosurgery.

August 26th, 2020 | Robert Wood Johnson Medical School Dr. Steven Kalkanis is chair of Henry Ford Health System's neurosurgery department, medical director of the Henry Ford Cancer Institute and president of the Congress of Neurological Surgeons. Dr. Kalkanis is internationally-recognized as a leader in brain and spinal cord tumor surgery, intracranial and stereotactic neurosurgery, and adult cervical and lumbar spine disease. He authored the definitive set of guidelines for the multidisciplinary treatment of brain metastases. As a member of the Hermelin Brain Tumor Center team,Dr. Kalkanis I specialize in the treatment of all brain tumors including clinical trials; intracranial neurosurgery, spinal cord tumors, adult cervical and lumbar spine disease, general neurosurgery and stereotactic neurosurgery.

Dr. Boison has a passion for translational research and for finding cures for intractable conditions that cause human suffrage and death. He also seeks to translate fundamental mechanisms of biochemistry and energy metabolism into novel therapeutic approaches for the treatment of neurological conditions. His major research effort is the development of metabolism-based therapies that enable disease modification in epilepsy after traumatic brain injury. Over the past 25 years he has maintained a rigorous program on translational adenosine research and has been continuously NIH funded since 2008.

Dr. Sun's research interests are in the areas of brain computer interface, neuroimaging, brain functional and structural connectome, pathophysiology of epilepsy, and the treatment of cerebrovascular diseases. He is the co-author of more than 60 peer-reviewed journal articles and 7 book chapters. Dr. Sun is a recipient of Epilepsy Research Program Idea Development Award from U.S. Department of Defense for the search of imaging biomarkers for the development of post-traumatic epilepsy. In a recent publication, Dr. Sun and his collaborators showed patients with sickle cell disease are at increased risk for developing the Moyamoya Syndrome, which is blockage of intracranial arteries. The blockage of the intracranial arteries can lead to both ischemic and hemorrhagic stroke. This group of patients should be screened for the Moyamoya Syndrome and referred to surgical revascularization early if they have the condition.

Dr. Gillick presented at a Medical Grand Rounds at Saint Clare’s Health on “Low Back Pain: My Approach to Patient-Tailored Surgical Decision Making” on Tuesday, January 22 2019.

In January, Dr. Khandelwal presented an abstract on "Tandem Occlusion & Acute Stroke" at a meeting for the American Academy of Cardiology in New Delhi, India. In April, he presented an abstract on "Pipeline embolization and other new devices for aneurysm embolization" at the American Academy of Neurology 2019 Annual Meeting in Pennsylvania. In May, he presented an abstract on "Tips and Trick of Radial Intervention" at the SNVI Conference in Mumbai, India. in November, he attended the SVIN Conference in Atlanta, GA and presented an abstract on "Is Trans Radial Approach is ready for prime time use?" .

Joseph M. Koziol, MD Dr. Koziol gave a presentation on: “Complex Reconstructive Spine Surgery for Tumors” at the David and Lya Neumann Symposium: Advances in Neurosurgery. Robert Heary, MD Dr. Heary was the meritorious service award recipient at the American Association of Neurological Surgeons/Congress of Neurological Surgeons Joint Section on Disorders of the Spine & Peripheral Nerves Annual Meeting. This award was presented at the annual meeting in Miami, Florida in March of 2019.

Eric Hargreaves, PhD Dr. Hargreaves gave a presentation on "Plasticity of Frequency Dependent Tremor Control in Parkinson's STN Implanted Individuals" at the biannual local meeting organized by Dr. Michael Pourfar of NYU Langone DBSNY (Deep Brain Stimulation New York), which gathers Neurologists and Neurosurgeons from a number of institutions including Columbia, Cornell, NYU, Mt. Sinai, Yale, Hackensack and Robert Wood Johnson.

Dr. Sun and his group represented their findings on Signature EEG correlates on intracranial monitoring and MRI-guided laser interstitial thermal therapy for medically refractory epilepsy from periventricular nodular heterotopia , at the Annual Meeting of American Epilepsy Society (AES), during December 6 to 10, 2019, in Baltimore, Maryland.

This symposium will coincide with the Administrative Council meeting of the World Federation of Neurosurgical Societie s. A galaxy of international superstars will be joining us to address the various

aspects of neurosurgery. Residents, medical students, and faculty are encouraged to attend.

In support of improving patient care, this activity has been planned and implemented by Rutgers Biomedical and Health Sciences and RWJBarnabas Health. Rutgers Biomedical and Health Sciences is jointly accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME), the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education (ACPE), and the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC), to provide continuing education for the healthcare team.

SYMPOSIUM GOALS AND OBJECTIVES

To create a platform for societies from the developing countries to discuss the current development of Neurosurgery in their respective countries, especially related to the education of young neurosurgeons.

To create an opportunity for all representatives of members’ countries to present regarding neurosurgical services in their respective countries.

To understand the facilities and level of development in Neurosurgery of each members’ countries.

To create a database on the regional neurosurgical services used to formulate long term strategies to improvise the neurosurgical development in human resources, facilities, and adaptation of current modern technologies.

To understand the regional health policies and its implications on the delivery of care in neurosurgery.

To understand the challenges posed due to cultural differences in implementing a uniform standard of care globally.
