Sounds of Camden
October 6 - December 18, 2014
Stedman Gallery, Rutgers-Camden Center for the Arts
Sounds of Camden was inspired by the founding of Victor Talking Machine Company in Camden in 1902; the company helped pioneer sound technology and music recording as the world’s leading manufacturer of home record players (Victrolas) in the early 20th century. Becoming RCA Victor in 1928, the company’s hundreds of cabinet makers developed beautifully crafted speaker technology while over 4,000 engineers developed the sound and transmission technology that led to home radios, and televisions, examples of which are presented in the gallery. A sampling of these early record playing machines were generously lent by the Camden County Historical Society in Camden NJ, RCA Heritage Project Museum at Rowan University, and the State of Delaware Historical and Cultural Affairs in Dover, Delaware. This exhibition also presented live performances.
