Katie Mixon
Hailing from Atlanta, Dustin earned a degree in public policy and environmental ethics from the University of Georgia. After three years as an education policy advisor in Washington, D.C., he set off on a year-long Southeast Asian sabbatical and he found Rustic Pathways along the way. He is now a program manager in Thailand and a recruitment coordinator in the U.S.
Katie holds bachelor’s and master’s degrees in theater, and a bachelor’s degree in zoo animal science. She first joined Rustic applying her passion for animal care to our programs at Steve Irwin Zoo in Australia, before managing our elephant programs in SE Asia. Katie’s knowledge of conservation-based issues and warm personality make her valuable asset in SE Asia.
Chris Berry
Evan Johnson
Chris has been leading Rustic programs for two years across Southeast Asia. He holds his bachelor’s in psychology and marketing from Roger Williams University. Seeing the benefits of experiential learning led him to pursue a master’s of education in experiential education and development through a partnership with Project Adventure and Plymouth State University.
Evan has been program leading, traveling, and living throughout Southeast Asia for over a year. Her extensive travel experience began in college, when she studied abroad in Kenya, Tanzania, and Israel, completing her degree in biology and film studies at Dickinson College. Originally from Portland, Oregon, her time off in Asia is spent living in a village in Bali.
Saw Nae Wah
Sonthaya Weerawatpongsathon
Born in a small Karen village in Myanmar, Nae Wah moved to the Mae Ra Moe Luang refugee camp on the ThaiMyanmar border where he lived for eight years. In 2010 he met Rustic Pathways and joined our team as a program leader in 2013. Nae Wah teaches students on Life on the Margin about life on the border and issues facing the Karen people. Nae Wah is also a talented singer.
Tono comes from Doi Tung, a small village near Chiang Rai. A graduate in English from Chiang Rai Rajabhat University and a licensed tour guide from the Tourism Authority of Thailand, he is an expert guide and program leader for our students around Northern Thailand. He loves singing, teaching children, playing soccer, and learning various types of sports.
