Point Of View One of my greatest sources of pride is that no two Rustic Pathways programs are the same. Each has its own unique character, charm and story. They are an earnest reflection of the locale and the people who bring it to life. Our newest programs, just added this year - in Japan and Germany - are perfect examples of stories crafted by the locale and the team who designed it. Which program will be your story?

building rustic pathways Our name speaks to our mission: building a pathway for each student to unleash their positive energy upon the world. We do it through the power of travel, the joy of service, the authenticity of connection to people unlike yourself and the strength of friendship. Since 1983, we’ve empowered students to positively impact lives and communities around the world. For over 40 years, we’ve given our students once-in-a-lifetime, off the beaten path, amazing and wow experiences. Our programs have long since expanded outside our Australia origins, as has our reach, but what our programs all share, have always shared, and will always share is a relentless focus on impact that you can feel. We couldn’t build Rustic Pathways without the people pictured, but we couldn’t build it without you as well. We thank you for helping to build Rustic Pathways for a new generation.

Ghana Whether road-tripping or immersed in village life, you’ll never be bored in Ghana. Laughter and music infuse the days with life. Energy permeates the country and leaves a lasting impression. You’ll love the secluded beaches, the spots where the elephants roam free, and the quiet getaways in the hills of the Volta Region. If

20

Ghana had a heartbeat, it would be thumping right out of its chest. With Rustic Pathways you’ll hit the road and see all the highlights of the country in this adventure. First, we’ll explore Accra, the bustling capital. Then it’s off to Tamale in the North where we’ll explore Islamic

arts and culture. Next, we’ll search for elephants, baboons, warthogs, and more at Mole Park. Then we scamper off to the coast as we dive into the history of the transatlantic slave trade and work to maintain and improve a local school for the deaf and blind. And make sure to keep the beat as we learn Ghanaian drumming rhythms!

The Serengeti, Mt. Kilimanjaro, and Zanzibar may be why visitors come to Tanzania, but the people are why they return. With warm welcomes, long handshakes, and wide smiles, Kiswahili culture seeps into your marrow. There is no other place where people of different religions, cultures, and tribes coexist with such warmth and inclusivity. You will visit Tanzania twice — first as a tourist and second, and forever after, as family. Experience rural Tanzania as you work with village leaders to improve living infrastructure. Partner with students for educational exchange activities to foster teamwork. Forge friendships in the classroom and on the soccer pitch. Hunt for small game with the nomadic Hadzabe, one of the last remaining hunter-gatherer tribes, visit local blacksmiths to learn how to make tools from recycled scrap metal, and embark on a safari in the Ngorongoro Crater.

You’ll quickly feel at home in Costa Rica and easily slip into the lifestyle of pura vida, a phrase that literally means “pure life” and suggests living life to the fullest. You’ll embrace this mindset as you learn to relax, appreciate nature, and let the good times roll. Options abound in Costa Rica. You can spend a week at Rustic’s Volcano and Rainforest Service Base working on service projects and enjoying Costa Rican adventure. Here you’ll contribute to the community, practice your Spanish, and make new Tico friends. After service, experience some of Costa Rica’s best adventure activities like zip lining and whitewater rafting. Visit hot springs and a traditional Costa Rican farm to learn about the local culture. After action-packed

days, take a dip in the freshwater pool or relax at the base house. Or instead, you can experience breathtaking sunsets and blue waters during a week of surf, service, and adventure in Costa Rica. Settle in at the Surf Bungalow and take in the beautiful view of the Pacific Ocean. Participate in service designed to support the local community and improve its quality of life. Then, grab your surfboard and head to the beach for surfing lessons from expert instructors. Relax at the bungalow or play soccer or volleyball on the beach after service. Or maybe you’re an animal lover? How about you journey to a secluded beach on the Pacific coast to help protect Costa Rican Sea turtles? These majestic

Costa Rica 28

creatures face threats to their nesting grounds from hunting, pollution, and development. You’ll contribute to the conservation of this endangered species. In the mornings, join beach cleanup projects and help construct a hatchery. At night, monitor the beach for turtle nests, record the number of eggs you collect, and carefully transport them to the hatchery or a safer place along the beach. With help provided by expert volunteers, many of these eggs will hatch into healthy baby turtles and contribute to the preservation of sea turtles. In your free time, learn traditional art techniques and take trips to the beach town of Samara to learn how to surf the incredible waves of the Pacific Ocean. Like we said…. options abound in Costa Rica!

29

Dominican Republic Since Rustic Pathways started its first Dominican Republic programs in 2012, our goal has been to emphasize people over place. While our students adore the pristine beaches, our programs go much deeper. Every Rustic Pathways program in the Dominican Republic dives deep into service opportunities, whether through community development, environmental stewardship, or public health. Dominicans might face many challenges, but they do so with big hearts and warm personalities.

There’s a reason that Japan’s best known poetic formulation is the haiku, exemplified by Matsuo Bashō’s 1686 banger: An old silent pond / A frog jumps into the pond / Splash! Silence again. Influenced by Zen, informed by the way of the samurai, and without the benefit of an iPhone or Instagram, Bashō used 17 beats and a seasonal indicator to paint luxe word portraits of his world. No place on earth displays this beautiful fusion of art and life better than Tokyo. Every day the city awakens, bursting with energy that can consume the newly arrived. Hidden oases provide sanctuary. Stroll through the tranquil gardens of Meiji Shrine. Feel the zen serenity of the ancient temple of Sensōji. Observe this bigger world and contemplate the big things in your life — friends, community, and purpose. The city comes alive in this tension between past and future. Find the harmonious

melody that resonates within yourself. You can wander Tokyo’s streets, surrendering to the chaotic symphony of sounds, sights, and scents on every corner. The set pieces of a temple, a glittering skyscraper, or a museum are amazing. But it is in ordinary moments that you can find real insight. Walk through the mazelike streets of Tokyo to touch the tapestry of a city woven by the threads of millions of daily lives. You feel it in the rhythmic clattering of trains. You hear it in hushed conversations over steaming bowls of ramen. You smell it in the aroma of fresh brewed coffee. When in Tokyo, its overwhelming physics takes hold. Gravity. Mass. Time. Energy. The magnetic pull, an invisible force, draws you into the heart of Tokyo. Art and life come together in you. You might even write your own haiku to rival the masters. Temple bells ring out / Neon lights paint the night sky / Feel Tokyo Fusion. RP 61

Japan Japan’s capital, Tokyo, is a mind-bending blend of chic ultramodern skyscrapers, generationally inspirational shops and restaurants, world class fashion and dining, world-leading international finance, and timeless historic shrines. The city pulses with life and you will beat along with it, from bustling Tsukiji Market to the peaceful serene Meiji Shrine. This nation and you are on the front of culture, life and style. But board a bullet train just a short couple of hours and when you step outside the bustling city, you’ll encounter a side of Japan that feels completely opposite. 62

A slower, more peaceful way of life where connection to nature and community is the priority. In this Japan you’ll find geiko (geisha), playing instruments and singing in teahouses as though life has been unchanged since the 17th century. This Japan is almost like a story and a perfect bookend to your time in Tokyo.

Seeing My City Anew A Tokyo Rustic Pathways alumni reunion turned out to be more eye opening than the group had bargained for. By Joseph Reilly PHOTGRAPHY BY JOSEPH REILLY UNDER THE BLAZING HOT TOKYO SUN, I braved the heat to connect with six other Rustic Pathways alums near bustling Shibuya crossing. Seeking refuge from the chaos, we charted a course to the urban heaven that is Yoyogi Park. The plan was to shoot some hoops and catch up with one another. As we ventured through the thick forest, we encountered a Torii gate, a traditional Japanese gate marking the entrance to a Shinto shrine. Entering, we found ourselves walking through beautiful koi-filled ponds and intricate stone statues. We settled into this tranquil spot and found ourselves reminiscing about our 64

Rustic Pathways summer trips and how we missed our friends, the service, and the activities. Our appreciation was mixed with nostalgia. After a brief rest, we moved past the shrine. Soon enough, we reached our intended destination, the Yoyogi Park basketball courts. But, given the heat and humidity, the courts were deserted. Defeated by the weather, we ventured underground into the subway station hoping to escape the sun. Among the crowds of people scrambling in the station, we regrouped and decided what we were going to do next.

We serendipitously heard a train announcement for Yokohama’s Chinatown. With this new opportunity, we quickly boarded the train with a new destination in mind. Our adventurous and impulsive sides were coming out. We were ready to embrace a new adventure: a typical Rustic Pathways characteristic. Yokohama, some 40 minutes away from where we were, had a completely new vibe. Foreign influences on Yokohama’s architecture made us feel like we were in New York. Yokohama’s buildings are complex stone designs compared to Tokyo’s blocky metal structures. We wanted to explore as much of Yokohama as we could, but with time in consideration, Chinatown was our main goal. Just ten minutes away from the station, it should’ve been a short walk. But our fascination with the new atmosphere and multiple pitstops at convenience stores turned a 10-minute walk into a 45-minute amble. Finally, the Chinatown gate appeared in front of us. We felt a shift; it was as if we were walking into a whole different country again. Within the enclave, there was new food, varied architecture, and a different language spoken. Even though we live in Japan, we were truly acting like travelers in our homeland. We tried the boba, dumplings, Peking duck, and Tanghulu strawberries. We peered into every store looking for what new things they had on offer. No street within Chinatown went unexplored as we weaved in and out of the alleyways. Once our bellies were full and our energy was waning, we caught a train back to Tokyo as the sun was setting. On the return ride, we realized we had left a lot unexplored. You start off with a set plan and then a new one emerges. You want to see something and then something makes you want to see something more. We wanted to continue exploring our native country of Japan with our adventurous Rustic spirit. Travel is like that sometimes. With this thought in mind, we knew this inaugural Rustic Pathways Alumni Event was a success and truly embodied the meaning of Rustic Pathways character.

Joe Reilly is a 2x Rustic Pathways alumnus based in Tokyo, Japan. He traveled to Costa Rica in 2022 and 2023.

Finding PURPOSE What is your life dream?

S

ince 2022, the Boston College Purpose Lab has partnered with Rustic Pathways to conduct research on the company’s student travel and the online Climate Leaders Fellowship program. This research included surveying hundreds and interviewing dozens to understand where, how, and to what degree Rustic Pathways programs have changed the lives of participants for the better. Purpose Lab measured growth across a variety of dimensions (e.g., purpose formation, critical consciousness, relationship building, sense of autonomy, et al) that research has shown to predict positive life outcomes for youth. The Purpose Lab is led by Dr. Belle Liang, PhD at Boston College and studies youth mentoring, purpose development and other aspects of youth development. We recently interviewed one of the lead researchers, Brenna Lincoln, to learn more about the Purpose Lab’s work. Brenna

84

Lincoln became connected with the Purpose Lab in 2016. While in the lab, she completed her B.A. in Psychology and M.A. in Mental Health Counseling at Boston College and worked as a Mental Health Counselor in the Boston area. Upon returning to BC to pursue her PhD in counseling psychology, she became lab leader.

What is your role and how did you get involved with the Purpose Lab? I work as our doctoral student lab manager. This involves overseeing research projects, presenting our work, and mentoring other lab members. I became involved with the Lab after I took an undergraduate course with Dr. Liang which sparked my enduring passion for studying purpose. When I was making decisions about graduate school, I knew I wanted to stay in this community and keep doing this work.

How has working at the Purpose Lab changed you as a person?

What are ways parents and teachers can help their kids and students develop purpose?

This work has made me think much more about my own purpose! I have become more thoughtful and intentional about how I live my own life. As part of my work, I have also had the privilege of interviewing many adolescents from around the world. Those conversations leave me feeling optimistic as I find time and again young people are resilient, thoughtful, compassionate, motivated, and creative.

Parents and teachers can be impactful toward young peoples’ purpose development. Helping young people cultivate a purpose mindset, or balancing pursuit of their intrinsic passions with meeting the world’s needs, is key. Searching for purpose can be a stressful experience, so encouraging exploration by connecting teens to unique opportunities, normalizing the trial-and-error process, holding space for reflection, and celebrating their progress are all helpful strategies. Finally, finding purpose also requires fighting back against grind culture--- talking less about GPA and more about a teen’s goals and passions is a great way to cultivate a purpose mindset!

Why do you think the Purpose Lab’s work matters? And why now? There is, appropriately, a large focus on reducing mental illness. But there is an idea in psychology that mental health is not merely the absence of mental illness — it is also the presence of connection, meaning, contribution, and many other positive factors. We focus on understanding and promoting those factors within young people.

How important is having a strong sense of purpose for teenagers? Why is it as or more important than other areas /topics for adolescent growth? Developing purpose is a key task of the adolescent life stage and having a strong sense of purpose is associated with many markers of flourishing for teenagers. For example, teens with higher purpose are more likely to graduate high school and college as well as report higher levels of hope, self-efficacy, and life satisfaction. Having purpose can also help teens cope with adversity and transition into meaningful careers. We think of purpose as important not only because it is associated with so many markers of flourishing but also because it is related to one’s identity and can provide an organizing framework for teens as they face the diverse challenges of life.

How important is a sense of purpose for parents (or adults in general)? Purpose is important for all of us! Research shows that adults with higher purpose outlive their counterparts, make more money, and find their lives more satisfying. Purpose helps us make decisions that align with our values and goals.

In what ways do you think travel can play a role in helping teens develop a stronger sense of purpose? Adolescent purpose development requires exploration; and travel can serve as a formative exploratory experience. Student travel grants teens an opportunity to test their skills (e.g., at traveling, connecting with new peers, trying novel activities) and build their own confidence in their abilities. Travel also offers valuable perspectives to consider what matters most to them as well as what ignites a spark of passion in their lives. By being without the familiar comforts of home, they can explore who they are and how they aspire to live. Teens also connect with mentors and peers who spark new interests. Finally, travel that involves service invites youth to consider how their unique purpose can impact the world around them.

Are there other important ways travel can help support teenagers to be fulfilled in life, outside of cultivating purpose? Travel encourages young people to respect and value ways of living that differ from their own and lean toward connection instead of away from it. These cross-cultural skills grow in importance as our world becomes more connected. Teens who travel before a more formal transition out of the home (e.g., matriculation into college) may feel more prepared for independent living. Finally, travel offers a break from the typical peer and school contexts and usually a break from social media and technology, too! This temporary distance can have positive impacts on anyone’s experience. 85

Rustic Pathways Celebrates

40 years of Epic Adventure

When Marty Smith challenged Daniel Rogers to create a travel program that could do more and show more depth in a particular locale, neither could have predicted that it would become one of the most celebrated and recognized icons in its space some 40 years later. Rustic Pathways immediately resonated with students and parents alike for its unique programing: a mix of service to others, unadulterated fun and deep cultural immersion. Travel broadens horizons, offering new experiences and perspectives. It cultivates growth, fostering adaptability. Exploring “foreign” lands enriches us. Unearthing history connects us to our shared past. It sparks creativity, providing inspiration. The joy of discovery creates enduring memories. Each destination, city or countryside, leaves a mark on us. When done right, travel is education, truly a celebration, and a testament to our world’s wonders.

Game Changing Service Through responsible travel and well-designed service initiatives, Rustic Pathways students view pressing social and environmental challenges on a global level and contribute to efforts that combat these challenges on a local level.

Rustic Pathways has always prioritized a communitycentered approach. Our original aim was clear: collaborate with the residents of the Nasouri Highlands community to craft service projects that would leave a sustainable and enduring impact. As we expanded into new countries, this process remained fundamental to our approach. Now, we’ve refined our approach. This ensures that our programs not only align with global initiatives but also that our company operates with these objectives at its core.

Reversing Gravity Powered by Rustic Pathways, teens in Climate Leaders Fellowship lead critical impact projects in their own backyard: global solutioning, applied locally THE CLIMATE LEADERS FELLOWSHIP (CLF) leadership development program is for students ages 14-18 interested in environmental sustainability. The program is a collaboration between the Stanford University Deliberative DemocracyLab, the Rustic Pathways Foundation, and Rustic Pathways. CLF has hosted fellows from over 60 countries so far. Accepted fellows identify, design and implement a project aimed at reducing the impact and/or harms of climate change in their local community. Students are grouped into small cohorts with other like-minded high schoolers from across the world working on similar themes. Fellows collaborate while retaining the ability to customize and personalize their individual project based on the local community’s needs. Fellows receive support and coaching from a facilitator who provides guidance, answers questions, and coordinates virtual

collaboration opportunities. Fellows can earn a certificate of volunteer hours for their commitments. For U.S.-based Fellows, volunteer hours count toward the Presidential Volunteer Service Award, a civil award bestowed by the President of the United States established to honor volunteers. The PVSA is an opportunity to honor volunteers and recognize the impact they make. Based on a volunteer’s age and number of hours of volunteer service they gave during a 12-month period, volunteers can receive a bronze, silver or gold award along with a certificate and letter of congratulations from the United States President. Thus far, 11 students have earned PVSA awards. Five are featured on the following page.

My colleagues and I started a program to turn our school into a climate-friendly school. All of this wouldn’t have happened if it wasn’t for the cooperation of Rustic Pathways and our school. Adam Elbadry

The Climate Leaders Fellowship provided me with immense guidance and support. As I formed new connections with like-minded individuals, I found a new sense of courage and a platform to see my plans become reality Taylor Helman 110

s a proud and longtime city dweller, the sudden chance to see “wildlife” in its true and natural habitat was both enervating and humbling. Was I going to star in my own nature documentary? Was there a forthcoming possible Netflix special on my now bright horizon? After a long flight and another long flight and then a long bus ride and many conversations and snacks and selfies in between, I was finally there. No more of my Bay Area concrete jungle. Just nature pure and true. The expanse unfolded in front of me, the towering trees and crisp blue sky. It was just me and an expanse of untamed beauty ---- and 18 students on their summer programs ready to be my witnesses and partners in

my quest to “see the real.” Hours of nothing filled me with a sense of dread. What if I flew around the world and saw nothing. Then, a moment frozen in time: a lion in the wild. Its huge frame commanded the utmost reverence. Each step was deliberate and weighty, no motion seemed to go to waste. I was far more afraid than I care to admit now or than I wanted to show the students. And then joy came over me and I started to giggle. I couldn’t believe that I was really face to face with Simba and Mufasa. No Disney songs came to mind. Just an open-mouthed wow.

HOW DO I CHOOSE A PROGRAM? With so many choices, it can be overwhelming to choose. Look at our site, use the filters and look at photos. Or give us a call and we can help! Reach us at 440.975.9691.

HOW MANY STUDENTS ARE ON A PROGRAM? Most programs have 10-20 students.

WHERE DO THE STUDENTS COME FROM? Rustic Pathways students come from all over the world. About 80% of our students are from the US. Last summer, we had students from over 25 countries!

HOW OLD ARE MOST RUSTIC PATHWAYS STUDENTS? WHAT ABOUT GENDER?

Yes! Many students choose to stack programs into one journey. While many of our programs connect, others take a bit of coordination. Contact us to get started.

DO I NEED SPECIAL SKILLS BEFORE JOINING? No special skills needed to join. Our programs cater to first timers as well as experts in individual fields. We ask only that you bring with you a cheerful disposition and a willingness to try new things.

DO I NEED TO BRING SPENDING MONEY? Rustic Pathways programs are comprehensive. That said, students like to flex their independence with their own budget. We recommend $150 per week to cover souvenirs.

CAN I CONNECT BETWEEN PROGRAMS OR COUNTRIES?

Students may bring a cell phone with them. That said, we encourage students to disconnect and immerse themselves and get the most out of their program. We also understand that connection to loved ones at home is important. We ask students to refrain from using their phone (except as a camera) during group activities. We find this helps students stay in the moment and build new friendships.

IS THERE A PACKING LIST? WHAT SHOULD I BRING? Yes. You can view the packing list for your program online and in your MyRustic portal.

HOW DOES THE CHAPERONED GROUP FLIGHT FOR PROGRAMS WORK?

WHEN SHOULD I ENROLL?

Rustic Pathways offers chaperoned international flights from gateway airports within the United States. Depending on the destination, our gateway airports are typically New York, Los Angeles, and/or Miami. For example, our flights to Europe typically depart from New York and our flights to Asia typically depart from Los Angeles. We ask students to arrive at the gateway airport four hours before the international flight. As the program date approaches, we send detailed information to parents. On these flights, we have members of our team escort students from the gateway airport to the arrival city. Our flight chaperones assist the group through customs/immigration. Then, we connect them with Rustic Pathways staff in the destination country waiting at the airport. We have Rustic Pathways staff at each gateway airport to help with check-in and connections.

Enrollments are processed on a first-come, first-served basis. There is a non-refundable application processing fee for each participant.
