If Max Rose is successful in building a war chest through small donations, he may be able to pass on PAC and corporate donations. His vision will improve the lives of regular Americans living in the 11th District but he will need more than two years to do it. Hopefully, his first priority will be to tackle the problems of our overburdened transit system. Federal support could help avert an MTA toll and fare hike. Brannan, a Democrat representing the area, sponsored the street naming bill. Mayor Bill de Blasio is expected to sign the legislation. There will be a public ceremony to celebrate the street corner designation sometime in the spring, according to Brannan. “Our community benefits each and every day from the neighborhood to sell ice Mafalda DiMango’s efforts cream, candy, hot chocolate and in educaand achievements other treats from their tion. streetpurchase named food Having trucks. aPeople food from vendors in heritems honor is not onlyand a then toss the containers the tribute to her amazingonlife sidewalks when they are done, and tremendous accomresidents said. plishments but will serve as Thousands of people visit athe reminder that a great neighborhood every eduyear cation theholiday great equalizer during isthe season to for no matter viewall children, the spectacular Christmas andparents figures where theylights or their homeowners display on their come from,” Brannan told front lawns. this newspaper in an email. pretext of bestowing the honorary title of Principal for a Day on her. In addition to her long career as an education advocate, DiMango was also a member of Community Board 11 in Bensonhurst. The idea to name the corner outside P.S. 204 was first brought up by members of the DiMango family, according to Carlo Scissura, president of the New York City Building Congress. Scissura had served on Community School Board 20 with DiMango. Mafalda DiMango is survived by her husband, Anthony DiMango, a retired dentist, and her two daughters, Hon. Patricia DiMango, a judge who stars in the CBS reality show “Hot Bench,” and Joanne DiMango-Orr, a retired educator. “The family mentioned it

and I thought it was great idea,” Scissura told this newspaper. “This news about the City Council vote is a fitting Christmas present for her family.” The street corner naming is a fitting tribute, according to Scissura, who said DiMango has an important

place in New York City’s education history. “She spent decades helping to build up the school system. If anyone deserves to have a street named after them, she does,” Scissura said. DiMango’s membership on the local school board

imes Square wasn’t the only New York City hotspot to brave the rain on New Year’s Eve. Brooklyn’s own Coney Island rang in 2019 with its usual blowout on Mon., Dec. 31. The New Year’s Eve event typically features fireworks, an illuminated Parachute Jump that counts down to midnight, free admission to the B&B Carousell in Luna Park and live music in Steeplechase Plaza. This year, the complimentary rides on the B&B Carousell went off without a hitch; however, due to weather being below 38 degrees, the Thunderbolt, Wonder Wheel and 7D Stop the Zombies were not open for the festivities.

Fireworks brightened the sky over Coney Island as 2019 began. The fireworks, however, stunned as promised. “We are proud to have once again produced a New Years Eve celebration for our community and visitors in partnership with our sponsors and particularly Luna Park and the Red Apple Group,” said Alexandra Silversmith, executive director of the Alliance for Coney Island. “Despite the rain, we partied on and rang in the New Year as a community the only way know
