DO IT

reach new heights

I knew I shouldn’t do it, but I couldn’t resist and reached out for another doughnut. They did little good for me, but they were Krispy Kreme, so who could blame me? It was a beautiful Sunday morning, so hiking seemed like a perfect idea to deal with the sugar overdose.

To my great joy, Google offered a strenuous, 5.2-mile hike located just 40 minutes away. My family and I quickly got to the trailhead and enthusiastically began our hike. Two miles up the hill, our enthusiasm had toned down. There was nothing scenic about the trail. It was winding up dull, brown hills with little vegetation or view. The sun was brutal, and the monotone, strenuous climb seemed more exhausting than enjoyable. We finally reached the top of a very steep hill and the temptation to turn around, instead of completing the loop, became very real. I was about to do so, when I heard Nicky, my youngest daughter, calling loudly for me. She was several hundred feet in front of me and had disappeared around a sharp bend several minutes prior. Worried out of my mind, I forgot about being tired and rushed ahead to see what had happened. I found her standing at the edge of a giant cliff overlooking the lush, green, rolling hills of Sonoma County. Giant, mesmerizing Lake Berryessa was right below us and was reflecting the shimmering lights of the setting sun. We stood in awe as we watched the breathtakingly beautiful Napa and Sonoma hills roll away towards the ocean. I’ve seen many beautiful sights before, but perhaps, this was one of the most fascinating and unexpected settings I’ve ever encountered in my life! It ended up being one of those experiences that will forever be engraved in my memory! I couldn’t believe that I almost missed it by thinking about turning around right before the summit! Steve Jobs once said, “The difference between those who succeed and those who fall short is pure perseverance.” Don’t quit if the road gets too difficult or steep; keep going and you just might reach new heights!

The 10th Annual Russian-Speaking Community Partners Capitol Reception showed that the relationship between the Slavic community and members of the legislature continues to progress. It took us years to break the stereotypes Slavic people had about their government. We want to preserve this fragile trust and encourage more civic engagement.

SCHOOLS in the

Capital Region by Olga Garicichina

The second most important decision we all make as parents — apart from deciding to have the kid in the first place — is deciding which school to enroll them in. Based on our decision, we could put our kids on a path toward lifelong learning, a prestigious college education and a successful career. One of the most common mistakes that majority of parents make, is wasting time planning which school they want their kids to attend. Even if they found a great school that is in huge demand, it could be too late to enroll. The competition for a spot in a good school is very high and preference is given to siblings of existing students. That’s why we compiled a detailed summary in which we rate and review the best schools in our region, so you can plan the enrollment of your child in advance. 23

CHOICE Good curriculum and a high rating are not the only things that factor into choosing the right school for your child. Most Slavic parents tend to be very involved in their kids’ education and prefer to have a say in what their children learn at school. This is one of the reasons why some charter and private schools become extremely popular in the Russian-speaking community. These few schools match most common Slavic parenting and education goals and have been top rated by our community.

Date

NIGHT by Lika Emelyanova

Date night doesn’t have to be boring. I love dinner and a movie as much as the next girl, but every now and then I want something a little bit more exciting! There are so many cool things to do around Sacramento to ensure an unforgettable evening with your significant other. If you’re looking for something new to spice up your love life, start with these fun ideas!

ESCAPE ROOM An escape room is the perfect option for partners who love riddles and puzzles. Escape rooms operate on a time limit, so participants must work quickly and efficiently to beat the clock and, quite literally, escape the room. This real-life puzzle will have you laughing together while you solve challenges and decrypt cyphers.

CONCERTS IN THE PARK With summer just around the corner, that means Concerts in The Park is back as well! Every Friday evening, Cesar Chavez Park hosts Concerts in The Park. Crowds of all sorts get together in the summer heat to enjoy live music, live art, themed nights, and a rotating lineup of local food trucks and boutique vendors.

PAINT NIGHT Paint night is a fairly new global craze among artistic and unartistic folk alike. Typically, restaurants or bars host them with drinks on standby and no prep work involved. If this is your first date, Paint Night takes the pressure off of being alone and you get a peak at your partner’s creative side. Even if you don’t know what you’re doing, the instructor gives you step-by-step instructions to make you look like a real professional.

SPORTS GAME Lace-up those sneakers because things are about to get competitive, in a friendly way, of course. Sacramento may not have all the top ranked sports teams but we do have the Sacramento Kings and Sac Republic FC! Turn a regular basketball game into something special. If you’re lucky, you and your date might even get on the jumbotron! It’s a loud and thrilling evening, mixed with cheap eats and an energetic crowd; it’s hard not to have fun while doing the wave.

INDOOR SKYDIVING Everyone goes out for dinner. Everyone goes out for coffee. But does everyone fly? If you or your date still can’t get over the fear of real flying, indoor skydiving is the perfect place to practice. Essentially, you’re geared up and are put in a wind tunnel that adjusts to your weight so you get the opportunity to fly. It’s the sensation of skydiving with a little less of the “will-I-eversee-my-mom-again” kind of feeling. This unique mini adventure is something you both will remember forever.

TOPGOLF We all know men love sports and there’s nothing better than a little friendly competition. Topgolf is a cool, indoor golf center with a great vibe and an even better menu. Reserve a bay with your date and get to smacking! There’s a live DJ, delicious food, drinks and of course, golf!

CALIFORNIA STATE FAIR Nothing beats a giant turkey leg and the Ferris Wheel! If you’re anything like me, your dates most likely revolve around where you can get a good meal and the California State Fair will never disappoint. From funnels to fries to churros, the menu at the fair is never ending. Paired with exhilarating attractions, competitions, concerts, exhibits, you name it, they’ve got it!

STUDIO MOVIE GRILL Let’s take it back to the basics. Sometimes a dinner and a movie is all that it takes to enjoy date night. Studio Movie Grill brings both together. This deluxe movie theater has a full-service bar, American Grill menu and a state-of-the-art projection and sound system. Each luxury recliner comes with a service button to let your server know instantly that you need assistance. Once your order is placed, they will deliver your meal directly to your seat anytime during the show. 30

SURPRISING EFFECTS OF EXERCISE

on Your Brain BY IGOR ALATORTEV

Thinking about skipping the gym today? Think again! It’s not just your biceps that will miss out if you skip a gym session— so will your brain. Neuroscientists have shown that regular exercise supports brain function, a positive mood, and cognitive health. Big muscles and attractive looks are some of the important goals we strive for when we are physically active. We make time for the gym, eat clean and constantly look in the mirror to get a glimpse of our transforming body. But what happens to the aspects that a mirror cannot show? Let’s look at a few absolute certainties that we can expect with an active lifestyle.

BRAIN THREATS: SATURATED FATS, TRANS FAT, SUGAR, EXCESS OF ALUMINUM, COOPER AND IRON.

Researches at Stanford University found that walking can increase creativity up to 60%.

Fact #1: DEMENTIA FIGHTER In a study conducted at the University of British Columbia, researchers found that regular aerobic exercise, the kind that gets your heart and your sweat glands pumping, appears to boost the size of the hippocampus, the brain area involved in verbal memory and learning. This could prevent dementia which is detected every four seconds globally! Researchers estimate that by the year 2050, more than 115 million people will have dementia worldwide. So, if you want to protect yourself or you loved ones, exercise at least 30 minutes to the point of sweating every day!

Fact #2: MOOD BOOSTER The American Psychological Association examined the “mood-enhancement effect” of exercise and found that working out can lift your spirits in as little as five minu tes — meaning a short stroll outside can be just what you need to cure a bout of the blues. Even more importantly, regular exercise can help combat Alzheimer’s disease and anxiety. A 2014 study published in “Lancet Neurology” reports that the incidence of Alzheimer’s disease might be reduced through improved access to education and the use of effective methods targeted at reducing the prevalence of vascular risk factors, which include regular physical activity.

Fact #3: DEPRESSION CURE Do you know that scientists are predicting an upcoming epidemic of depression? More than 350 million people suffer from depression. And women experience depression twice as often as men. Depression can also increase the chances of getting cancer and this will be one of the leading diseases by 2030. But here is the good news — Exercising helps fight the symptoms of depression by boosting the production of BDNF (brain developed neurotrophic factor). BDNF is a kind of protein that helps the neuro-

transmitters perform their functions effectively. A 2013 study published in the “Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews” analyzed the effect of exercise on alleviating symptoms of depression. The study found exercise to be just as effective in treating depression as any other alternative, such as psychological therapy or drugs. Another study published in 2014 in the “Journal of Cell” reports that exercising not only helps fight depression but helps prevent it, too.

Fact #4: BOOSTS DECISIONMAKING SKILLS In a study conducted at the University of British Columbia, researchers found that regular aerobic exercise, the kind that gets your heart and your sweat glands pumping, appears to boost the size of the hippocampus, the brain area involved in verbal memory and learning. A 2012 study found that even one exercise session can help you retain physical skills by enhancing what’s commonly known as “muscle memory”.

Fact #5: INCREASES IQ

Exercising makes you smarter! A 2008 study published in “Education and Psychological Reviews” found that exercise may prove to be a simple, yet important, method of enhancing children’s cognitive development. The study noted that following aerobic exercise training, children’s performance improved on tests that involved executive function. In addition, exercising not only improves IQ levels but also helps overall cognitive development. A 2009 study in the “Journal of Clinical Psychology in Medical Settings” noted that exercise, especially aerobic exercise, can be extremely helpful in improving cognitive flexibility. The study saw a close link between aerobic exercise and increased mental speed, attention and cognitive flexibility.

Filoli Gardens is a 654-acre estate located on the east side of the Santa Cruz mountains, about 25 minutes out of San Francisco. The property features 16 acres of manicured lawns and formal gardens that are famous worldwide. This luxury estate was established by a wealthy family of gold mine barons over 100 years ago and was later transferred to a local non-profit and opened to the general public. Guests can tour the eclectic mansion located at the entrance to the estate and then explore the gardens through multiple natural trails that wind through beautiful blooming lawns and fruit tree groves.

Burlingame and Millbrae are both just 20 minutes away and offer lots of luxurious hotels at half the price because of close proximity to the San Francisco airport.

THE MUSEUM OF ICE CREAM This interactive museum is perhaps one of the most Instagrammed attractions in San Francisco! It equally attracts children, parents, tourists, bloggers, and social media influencers alike. With no historical artifacts on displays, this experiential art project offers something more precious than any fancy art exhibition. It allows adults to get in touch with their inner child and remind themselves how great it was to be a happy, careless kid. The Museum feels like Neverland, where our most desirable childhood dreams come to life. It has a swimming pool filled with rainbow sprinkles, a pink banana swing, a unicorn and giant circus animal cookies that you can ride. On top of all the attractions, they have lots and lots of different ice cream treats from some of the best local creameries! Whether you want to amaze your kids, surprise your date, make your Instagram pop with some bright catchy pictures, or just feel like a kid for a day, the Museum of Ice Cream is definitely worth a visit! Tickets are sold online only, and often sell out, so make sure to book them in advance.

ONEDOME

Onedome is a new phenomenon that has recently opened in the heart of San Francisco and quickly became one of the hottest local attractions. It’s a mind-bending, interactive experience that pushes the limits of your imagination. This place offers several exhibits which display responsive art made of lights, interactive technology, and mixed reality. The first exhibit, LMNL, is a labyrinth of 14 rooms created by different artists. Each room takes you into a new realm, where reality blurs and blends with interactive lights, special effects, and unleashed limitless imagination. The second exhibition, the Unreal Garden, is an augmented reality experience which takes you into another dimension. Your journey starts in a simple hall which virtually transforms into the magical forest through special technology and projections. The experience becomes even more real if you try The Feast, a 5-course dinner prepared by a renown chef and serve in a setting filled with interactive digital art and music. In the true spirit of San Francisco healthy food culture, Onetime has a bar that serves drinks based on herbs and natural ingredients. These fancy cocktails are made to boost your mood and social skills without a drop of alcohol! 40

RUSSIAN RIVER VALLEY

Okay, I admit it. I first decided to explore this destination for the name. Russian anything on the map gets me excited. I fell in love with this place for all the beautiful adventures it has to offer. Named after a river that perfectly resembles a traditional rural Russian landscape, this region offers a great variety of things to do for any taste and liking. Those looking for a laid back relaxing weekend can take a stroll through many picturesque vineyards and breweries and explore the local restaurant scene. Santa Rosa, located just minutes away, has many boutique hotels and local eateries which offer tasty farm to fork dishes. If you are looking for a more active way to spend your weekend, check out the multiple hikes in the nearby Armstrong Woods.

The park offers trails of any level of difficulty, from easy short walks to strenuous hikes that can take you all the way to the top of the hills overlooking the redwoods. For those of you who don’t mind extreme adventurous, I recommend one of my favorite family traditions — kayaking down the Russian River. You can rent a canoe for two at Burke’s Canoe Trips and go down the river, stopping at multiple secluded beaches for a picnic or a swim. They pick you up with the boat a few hours down the road and bring you back to your car. It’s a great way to detach and relax your mind, as well as a great workout for your upper body!

Most people – and even some doctors – are unaware of the critical role the microbiome plays in serving as a foundation for lifelong health. For example, did you know:

• The microbiome begins to develop at the moment you are born, and by the time you reach adolescence, you will have a set of more than 100 trillion microorganisms, living in or on your body. • Each person has a unique set of microbes – as a result of where and how you are born, your genes, gender and age, diet and personal hygiene, and even your life experiences.

• Your microbiome can affect nearly every aspect of your life: mood, stress, energy, sleep, skin, the immune system, and so much more. • The gut microbiome can be altered – for better or worse – by the foods we eat, the medicines we take, the amount of sleep we have, and even the environments we live and work in.

As more evidence comes out and our understanding of what goes on in the gut gets deeper, it has become very apparent that the health of our gut, to a pretty huge extent, determines many other aspects of overall health. That is why if you improve the gut, microbiome that can really change your life. We asked our expert Nadia Shvets, that was voted the best Chiropractor and Nutritionist doctor by Russian Speaking Community to share five handy tips, that can drastically improve your gut health, which is crucial in both physical and mental wellness, so don’t neglect it!

Step #1 Remove toxins Remove infections (fungal, parasitic, and/or bacterial), inflammatory foods and foods you are allergic or sensitive to, and environmental pollutants. This step is the most important – if you embark upon a gut healing protocol without also removing things that irritate the gut lining, you will never allow your body to heal!

Step #2 Eliminate dairy & gluten Try eliminating gluten and dairy from your diet for a few weeks and see how you feel. For many people, gluten and dairy irritate the gut lining, so taking them out of the diet can give the gut a chance to heal. Some of my patients, who had autoimmune thyroiditis in less than a day, noticed significant improvements after eliminating gluten and dairy. Also, contrary to popular belief, eating dairy products has never been shown to reduce fracture risk. In fact, according to the Nurses’ Health Study dairy may increase risk of fractures by 50 percent!

Step #4

Step #5

Probiotics and Prebiotics

De-stress for your gut

Try a Paleo diet

Up your intake of fermented products! Fermented foods such as sauerkraut, kimchi, kefir, and natural yogurts have been shown to promote the abundance of healthy gut bacteria and reduce the levels of bad bacteria which are linked to gut inflammation. However, some of the patients that I work with have some pretty serious issues going on in their body that causes histamine intolerance and reactions to fermented foods. If you find you do not react well then it is probably best to avoid them momentarily. In these cases, I typically recommend a broadspectrum probiotic.

Reduce your stress. Studies have shown that there is a link between the brain and the gut, called the gutbrain axis, which runs along what’s called the vagus nerve. Emotional stress can result in bowel disturbance and digestion, as the brain releases certain endorphins that can lead to what your mother would have called “butterflies in the tummy”. Stress negatively affects our digestive system in many ways. It can cause a decrease in blood and oxygen flow to the stomach, cramping, an imbalance in gut bacteria and inflammation. These symptoms can further develop into gastro intestinal disorders such as irritable bowel syndrome, irritable bowel disease, peptic ulcers or gastroesophageal reflux disease.

The main idea of a Paleo Diet can be summarized in one sentence: If a caveman didn’t eat it, neither should you. Unfortunately, people choose their food based upon taste, cost, convenience, and psychological gratification – thus ignoring the main reason that we eat, which is to provide our body cells the raw material to grow, repair, and fuel our bodies. When you are following the Paleo Diet, you can eat anything we could hunt or gather way back in the day – things like meats, fish, nuts, leafy greens, regional veggies, and seeds. By following this diet, you will improve your gut health, increase your energy, lose weight and reduce inflammation.

A Few Signs Your Gut Isn’t as

Healthy as

You Think

• • • • • • • •

Feeling bloated after you eat Feeling heartburn or acid reflux Not moving bowels (comfortably) 1 – 3 times per day Any type of skin issues (acne, eczema, psoriasis) Experiencing low mood, depression, or anxiety Frequently catching colds Having a thyroid condition Having an autoimmune disease

“My Job fulfills me. I am a chiropractor and a nutritionist so I get to help people feel better, both physically and mentally. Every day I get to do something that I love and make an impact on people’s lives. What is the highlight of your practice? I’ve had numerous cases that were very special. One that particularly comes to mind is a young family with a baby that had poor motor skills. INTERESTING FACTS ABOUT VARIOUS JOBS

MAN fire on

by Margret Okunev

Imagine waking up not knowing what each day is going to bring, where the unexpected is expected! With just the sound of a siren, you know you’re about to put your life on the line for a stranger. I once read, “Firefighters do not regard themselves as heroes because they do what the business requires”. Being a firefighter is a noble profession and we sat down to chat with a humble, young man named David who is no stranger to selfless acts.

Featured Guest: David Petrovich Zalutskiy Occupation: Firefighter

Photo by: Olha Melokhina | www.OlhaPhotography.com

What inspired you to choose such a dangerous career?

I have wanted to become a firefighter ever since I can remember. When I was young, local firefighters would come to our neighborhood around the holidays for the “Toys for Tots” Program. They would spend time with us while they handed out gifts and, right then and there, I decided I wanted to be just like them.

What is the atmosphere at the firehouse and with your co-workers?

The camaraderie that develops in a firehouse is extraordinary. Nearly all my friends are now firefighters; we have a special bond that seems impossible to break. I can honestly say that I would put my life down for these guys and I know they would do the same for me. Whether it’s the challenges brought on by an emergency or simply motivating each other to get through a workout, we are a team.

What is your favorite I love being a positive role model. part of the job? I grew up in a less privileged neighborhood, so I know what it’s like to have someone to look up to. I also love helping people and enjoy the rewarding feeling that I get when helping someone in need.

What do you like to do in your free time to de-stress from such a demanding job?

I love nature and being outdoors. Whether its cruising on my motorcycle, off-roading, swimming, snowboarding, surfing, or just going on a hike, these activities all help clear my mind from the stresses of the job.

What does your We work 48-hour shifts. Yes, they typical schedule look can be very long and sleepless, but like? in return we get 96 hours to recover and spend time with our family. Two days on, four days off.

Any advice for rookies?

I once asked a beloved Captain of mine how to succeed in the fire service. He replied, “You have two ears and one mouth, so use them accordingly”.

CHARCUTERIE

Cheese boards are an art form that involves much more than throwing cheese and cracker on a plate and serving it to your guests. Although, they will love whatever creations you serve, I’m going to help you impress your guests. Charcuterie and cheese boards are my go to for no stress entertaining eats. You can load them up with all your favorite cheese, cured meats, fruit, nuts and spreads. Add some wine and baguettes and you have yourself a meal!

BOARDS:

SUMMER

PARTY FAVORITE CHEESES

When putting together a cheese plate, offer a variety of styles of cheeses. Try finding a combination of aged, firm, soft, crumbly and creamy cheeses. Offer a variety of types of milk as well; cow, goat, sheep, they all have different tastes and textures. That being said - don’t go too crazy, make sure to serve at least one cheese that people are familiar with.

TIPS

by Margret Okunev

Easy cheese combination options: Aged: Aged Cheddar or aged Gouda Firm: Parmigiano-Reggiano or Gruyère Creamy: Brillat-Savarin or Brie Crumbly: Chèvre (Goat cheese) Blue: Gorgonzola or Stilton

BREADS & CRACKERS Breads, crackers, chips, crisps, everything works! I like to put out two to three options for people to decide. Crackers are a classic but grilled French bread is my favorite!

CHARCUTERIE

ADDITIONS

This is another time to try to mix up the textures. I like to pick something hard like salami, thinly sliced, something soft and rich like a pate and dry cured meats like prosciutto (fan favorite).

Fresh figs or sweet fig jam pairs nicely with creamy Brie. Add something acidic like olives or pickled veggies to break up the rich flavors. Grapes or sliced apples add dimension and color to a plate.

• You can typically allot 2 oz. of cheese and charcuterie per person for appetizers. 5 oz. for a meal. • Serve a knife for each cheese so flavors don’t mix • Cheese is best served at room temperature.

He goes above and beyond to make sure his patients are well taken care of and happy. I am about halfway through my recovery and I can’t be happier with the results. This experiment has been life changing for me.”
