METBOMHE! Publisher's Column
It's a bit shy of six a.m. I've been awakened by my phone that's been buzzing nonstop for the last few minutes. I'm on a business trip in Moscow, Russia. It's too early for anyone here to call me, and it should be too late for anyone from the US to contact me either. I look at my phone. Six missed calls and a ton of messages from good friends and clients in California. All messages and voicemails boil down to the same question, "Sergey, how are you doing, my friend?" I am flattered, confused, and still half asleep. "I'm fine; thanks for asking:' It took me a couple of days to make sense of all the worrying my friends randomly expressed in the middle of the night. It took me a hot second to realize that war had erupted! For the first few days, the Russian government referred to the war in Ukraine as "a special operation:' Russian media reassured people that there would be no civilian casualties. Then, social media began to explode with footage of fighter jets flying over major Ukrainian cities, war sirens forcing people to hide in basements and subway stations, and hundreds of thousands of refugees fleeing Ukraine into neighboring countries. That's when all hell broke loose. Police arresting people for protesting in the streets of Moscow, companies going out of business overnight due to sanctions imposed on Russia, influencers and artists declaring war against the war on social media. And Ukraine, my dear Ukraine, birthplace of my grandfather, just burning down in flames like it's 1941 all over again. People ask me what side I am on. My heart is bleeding for all the victims of this war who ended up in the middle of such madness. I look at the pictures of families fleeing their homeland with nothing but the clothes on their backs and I see the biggest humanitarian crisis since WWII. But I also see Russian mothers who will never see their sons again. I see simple people who are losing their jobs, businesses, and hope because of a war that they didn't start. I see the world stereotyping an entire nation into an enemy. And that's where I find my answer. I'm for the people, for those who suffer as a result of a war they didn't want. I stand with those who speak out against hate and violence. I applaud those who don't let hate consume them, but rather find ways to help people in need. I say no to hate and war! Her BOV!He!

Her name is Natalie, and she moved to California from Ukraine ages ago, to pursue a career in sports. As a professional athlete, she played for California’s top teams in professional volleyball tournaments. I follow her on social media out of admiration and respect for her achievements. It makes me proud to share the same heritage with this beautiful, accomplished, young woman. I opened her Instagram Story on March 2, 2022, and instead of the usual things girls share on social media, I saw a video that Natalie had taken out of a window of a high-rise apartment building in Kiev, Ukraine. The video showed the city in mayhem, with war sirens piercing the air and fighter jets circling like vultures on the horizon. The clip did not seem real, but rather like a scene from a WWII movie. Natalie had gone to visit her family in Kiev when the war broke out. Rumors of Russian military forces piling up on the border between Ukraine and Belarus had been circulating for a while. At that point, most people thought Putin was simply flexing his muscles, trying to intimidate his neighbors and the rest of the EU. His brutal invasion of Ukraine was a shock to the international community. Over the next few days, Natalie’s posts were nothing like usual. Missiles lit up the night sky over Odessa near my own hometown of Mykolaiv while explosions pierced the air. Natalie is a US citizen. She still had a chance to catch one of the last few flights to the US, but instead, she embarked on a dangerous mission to try to get her mother and aunt out of Ukraine. It’s a perilous journey. Pictures of cars and families that had been shot trying to leave Ukraine saturated the news.
armored vehicles, hundreds and hundreds of tanks and military trucks carrying missiles and solders, heading towards the capital. She was live on IG as she passed a narrow bridge with a block post at the end. Several armed solders with AK-47s in their hands are ready to open fire. I found myself holding my breath. She managed to pass safely and enter Moldova. Over 3.2 million people, like Natalie and her mother, have managed to flee Ukraine since the war began. Hundreds of thousands more are trying to leave. Many haven’t been as lucky as they were. Entire families have been shot at while trying to escape. This is the most devastating humanitarian crisis in Europe since WWII, and yet, it has also reveled the best in humanity. Never in the history of the modern world have people been more united in the face of a humanitarian catastrophe. The countries in the European Union are welcoming Ukrainian refugees with open arms. Many others, including the UK and Canada, have created special visa programs that allow Ukrainian refugees to enter their countries or reunite with family. Poland has accepted over two million refugees, Romania over half a million, while Moldova, Hungary, and Slovakia have each accepted over 300,000. Transportation companies have been offering free train rides to evacuate people. Hundreds of thousands of volunteers are helping refugees by providing them free rides from the border into neighboring countries, turning their homes and business properties into shelters, and offering food and medical care.
EACH TIME I opened her Instagram Story, my heart SKIPPED A BEAT Is she ok? Is her family STILL ALIVE? She found a car and drove through Ukraine to its border with Moldova. The upcoming lanes were full of
An upscale resort in Moldova turned their entire luxury property into a refugee camp. A maternity hospital
in Kishinev offered Ukrainian women free childbirth and postpartum care. Countless churches throughout the United States have held donation drives resulting in entire shipping containers and commercial airplanes full of clothes, canned food, and first aid supplies being sent to Ukraine and neighboring countries. But, maybe most surprising, some of the world’s largest corporations took a cut in their earnings to take a stand against violence. Google, Facebook, Netflix, TikTok, Apple, Starbucks, McDonald’s, and many others, suspended their operations in Russia, losing millions of dollars but gaining immense respect from the international community. Airbnb, the world’s largest online marketplace for private vacation rentals, opened a Refugee Fund and waived booking fees for those willing to rent short-term housing for refugees. Many major corporations such as Amazon, Google, and Whole Foods, just to name a few, took measures to help displaced Ukrainians by collecting and matching donations.
W
itnessing simple people open the doors of their homes to complete strangers, large corporations cut into their profits, and people uniting in the face of a horrible tragedy gives me hope; hope that we, as the human race, are still capable of more good than evil. It is certainly not the time to celebrate just yet as millions of people remain displaced from their homes and thousands are dying in the line of fire. But maybe someday, our good is going to be enough to end wars so that we all can live in peace. Because every good deed, no matter how small or immaterial, makes a difference as long as enough people do it. So whether you are considering flying to the Ukrainian border to assist with refugees, planning on making a donation to help people of Ukraine, or simply spreading the word about the people in need on your social media, you are getting us one step closer to the world that lives in peace.

On August 26, 2021 I was looking at my husband, who sat across from me in a doctor’s office, and without breaking eye contact heard the doctor say, “I’m sad to say, but it’s definitely Hodgkin’s Lymphoma.” I wanted to object…but, I’m only 31 years old, my daughter is not even two years old, I just got a new job…I, I… none of that mattered because there was definitely something wrong and I now because I am only 31 and my daughter is only 2, I had to fight this, taking it one step at a time. I remember the first person I called as we walked out of the doctor’s office. It should have been my mom, but I wanted to put that off for as long as I could. I called my best friend’s husband, who was a doctor and saw all my labs as they were coming in. “It’s Hodgkin’s,” I said “Yeah, I figured…” “I’m supposed to go to Vegas tomorrow for a girls’ trip.” “Go, Mash. You might as well go…” Of course, I then called my mom, and then I cried into my husband’s chest, but then I went to get a pedicure because I was going to Vegas the next morning.

CANCER
@valentina_nurmatova
I wasn’t sure at first whether I wanted to share my diagnosis publicly. I definitely knew I wasn’t going to hide it, but I do understand why some people choose to. Cancer is raw, it’s personal, it’s quiet… BUT it’s not shameful or embarrassing and in most cases today it is not a death sentence! I’m almost at the end of my treatment journey, and hopefully I will never have to deal with the Big C ever again. My goal for 2022 is to leave Hodgkin’s Lymphoma in 2021, but retain all the valuable lessons of this experience. I know that not everyone can compartmentalize like I did at the time when I’ve heard my diagnosis. I understand that most people would end up in tears, not in Vegas. But a cancer diagnosis in 2022 does not mean your life must stop. Treatment does, of course, insert certain restrictions, but it is just a set of steps that need to be taken in order to get your life back. And to all those who never had to deal with cancer; listen to your bodies. I got to Stage III in just 6 months, and the warning signs were such whispers that I didn’t hear them earlier. Don’t put off a trip to your primary care doctor and insist on an in-person yearly physical examination. Check your body regularly, you will know when something doesn’t feel right. You are your best and only advocate when it comes to your health!

CANCER
I’ve had issues with my thyroid function since 2014. In the summer of 2021, I was due for a routine thyroid biopsy that I kept putting off. When I received my biopsy results, I realized that my subconscious was putting this biopsy off for a reason. It was cancer. Panic overtook me. I couldn’t believe that this was happening to me. I immediately called my mom.
I didn’t have time to fall into depression or apathy, I needed to act and act quickly.
I never asked the notorious questions like “what did I do to deserve this?” or “why me?” The first few days were scary because I didn’t know what to expect. My mother immediately found a great oncologist, she was an immense help, her composure and strength helped me get through every step. After speaking with the surgeon, I felt a sense of relief. With an oncological diagnosis, the more information you have, the better.
When I came home after the surgery, I wanted to dive back into work immediately, like nothing happened and my regular life would just continue exactly where it paused. Unfortunately, I very quickly realized that I needed to slow down, to give my body time to heal and recover. I didn’t want to admit that I was weaker than before and I needed time to rebuild my strength.
My thoughts were all about solving this “problem,” like any other life obstacle that I came across before. This problem also had a solution.

The treatment plan did interrupt all of my professional plans. I just graduated and I had grandiose plans that I unfortunately had to abandon and focus on my health. That frustrated and upset me, and it was hard to accept that my diagnosis now ran my life.
The first art piece I created after my surgery was a portrait of my mother, I just now realize this as I look back. I think it was for a reason. She was my inner strength.

Life experiences like a cancer diagnosis do not pass without leaving a trace. Cancer changes you and your whole life and your perception of your surroundings. Following surgery, I needed to go through a course of radiation treatments, but that did not stop me from drawing again. Art is my lifeline, without it my life does not have meaning. Art is hard work and it defines me. I think my art also changed. I now allow myself to do things with my art that I didn’t have the courage
to do before. I no longer care what people may think of my art. My paintings have more symbolism, they are my poetry. I want to speak to the world through my art. My cancer journey made me realize that I should hurry up and live! In all aspects of life. We endlessly put off our dreams, thinking that we have a ton of time. Death isn’t scary, it’s a natural occurrence. Not realizing your dreams because of self doubt - that’s what’s what’s really scary.

Being taught by some of the brightest artists in Moscow, Viktoria is a winner of prestigious international art competition, an aspiring artist, and a cancer survivor.

2022 TRENDS FOR SPRING & SUMMER
The pandemic has changed the way we think about fashion. At first, it made us switch to loose and comfortable clothing. But after a year and a half of watching the world falling apart while being stuck in loungewear at home, basic styles got boring. This is why the new spring-summer 2022 collections are so refreshing! Fashion designers came up with incredibly bright and emotional collections, which come across as a celebration. Feathers, sequins, fringes, and satin lapels on jackets, reminiscent of a tuxedo, gold, and velvet fabrics - all these dominate formal outfits. This season is also marked by a revival of the disco era and a reference to the 70-80’s in the collections of Fendi, Saint Laurent, inspired by the cult New York club “Studio 54,” reigned by glamour, luxury and freedom of self-expression. The collections of Blumarine, Miu Miu, Balmain, Dolce&Gabbana brought back the style of the 2000s with it’s low-cut, belted-skirts, tank tops, belts embellished with huge buckles or decorated with rhinestones. There is a manifestation of femininity, sexuality and elegance, something that we have been hiding for so long under the cozy outfits while working from home. I am a big supporter of the slow-fashion movement, a smart and conscious approach to clothing and accessories. Here are several long-playing slow fashion trends for a functional and stylish closet.
Sasha Potapova is a personal stylist and a strong advocate of slow fashion, a viral trend that is taking over Europe and the U.S. Slow Fashion is all about higher quality items made of sustainable materials following fair trade practices, minimizing waste, and making great use of resources. Sasha’s specialty is creating stylish, functional wardrobes that feature exceptional pieces designed to last. *@potapovasasha.ru
MONOCHROME
OFFICE STYLE
CROCHET
People missed dressing up for work during pandemic. That’s why there was an abundance of business attire on the podiums during the last fashion shows. Pantsuits got special attention. Their versatility makes them perfect for a day at the office, a date night, or even a party. Jackets come in a variety of styles, from masculine cuts to fitted or cropped silhouettes. A perfect summer variation is a jacket with short sleeves and bermuda. Business-style dresses are also trending. Bodycon dresses, dresses-jackets, dresses-shirts, paired with a pair of heels or platform shoes are especially in style this season.
Crochet never really went out of style, but this season it’s totally in. Crochet clothing has a beautiful, airy texture that makes it perfect for warm months. Crochet dresses, skirts, and mesh tops that could be worn over tank tops or shirts are perfect for a day at the beach or in the city alike.
MINI LENGTH The usual midi length is being replaced by a mini. Skirts and dresses from new collections stand out not only because of the daring lengths, but also because of their bright colors and prints. Tops with wide straps and cropped tops with puffed sleeves pair well with mini skirts. You can also combine a mini skirt with an oversize shirts or t-shirt shirt to tone it down and make it look more appropriate.
The combination of different shades of the same color stretches the silhouette and makes it look slimmer. Monochrome style always looks expensive and presentable, especially if it combines a few different shades and textures. This trend emphasizes simple cut, attention to details and soft lines perfect for those who like to wear timeless pieces. Here are a few trendy color patterns that create a perfect tonal look.
COLOR-BLOCK
BASIC COLORS:
Color blocking technique mixes several bold and often contradictory colors together to make an exciting statement piece. This season color blocking extends beyond mixing colors to combining different fabrics and textures, creating more interesting, bold images. This hot trend offers a great excuse to add bright pieces to your closet.
• Saturated blues and Bottega greens • Citrus shades, such as lemon yellow and mandarin • Total black and total white • A combination of red and fuchsia • Azure, lavender and soft pink • Prints: check, stripes, tiger and floral prints.
I always advise my clients to not chase all trends at once. Fashion changes from season to season; don’t impulse shop. Instead, get inspired, analyze and discern fashion trends, learn to choose the ones that match your unique style and mood. After all, only exceptional items should have a place in your closet. Visit me at @ potapovasasha.ru for more ideas on fashion trends and slow fashion. It will be my pleasure to be your personal stylist!

Does the Us accept Ukrainian refugees?
The war in Ukraine caused the biggest exodus of people in Europe since Wwii. As of now over 3 million Ukrainians have fled the country into the neighboring European states. While Europe receives Ukrainians with open arms, the U.S. also steps up to address the developing humanitarian crisis.

California’s leading immigration advisor Oleksandr Mosendz explains what immigration options the United States offer to refugees from Ukraine.
Does the USA currently accept refugees from Ukraine? While President Joe Biden said that the US would welcome Ukrainian refugees “with open arms,” there are currently no programs in place to accept many Ukrainian refugees. However, there are still ways for Ukrainians to legally come to the US. The European Union has authorized a Temporary Protective Directive for Ukrainians fleeing the Russian invasion. This TPD temporarily waives visa requirements for Ukrainian refugees in 27 European states. Does the US offer a similar directive or do Ukrainian refugees still have to apply for a visa to enter the country? The US still requires visas to enter the country, with a refugee visa being the most obvious option. However, it takes too long to wait for the refugees’ documents to be processed. Refugee visas involve many steps and require a background check, a medical check, proof of a person’s persecution in their own country, and so on. It may take several years for a refugee visa to be processed. Basically, there are two faster ways to enter the country. The first is to obtain a US temporary visa, which is currently a little easier to get for Ukrainian citizens. The second option is to cross the border through Mexico. I definitely recommend option one. For that to work, it is imperative to prepare all the necessary documents and complete a visa application promptly and properly. Once processed, applicants will have to pass an interview in the US visa-processing center. Since such centers have been shut down in Ukraine, Russia and Belarus, the US State Department announced that Ukrainians can apply for a temporary visa at any American Consulate. The US Consulate in Frankfurt, Germany has been designated as the processing hub for Ukrainian immigrant visa applications.
What is going to happen to Ukrainian citizens who are currently in the US on a temporary visa? On March 3rd, the US Immigration Service announced that all Ukrainian citizens who entered the US before March 1st are eligible for Temporary Protection Status. TPS is a special program that allows individuals to stay and work in the US legally if they can’t go back to their home country because of war or other life-threatening circumstances. At this point, the duration of TPS for Ukrainians is 18 months. Additionally, the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement has announced that they will temporarily stop deportations to Ukraine, Russia, Moldova, Belarus, Poland, Hungary, Romania, and Slovakia. What other means of relocation to the US are available to Ukrainian refugees?
Another way of entering the US is through parole, a status that is granted on humanitarian grounds to those who do not have a visa. Over 70,000 Afghan refugees were admitted to the US last year on parole after Afghanistan was taken over by the Taliban. Parole does not provide a pathway to citizenship, but it allows beneficiaries to stay and work in the country legally. The US administration is currently considering granting parole to Ukrainian family members of US citizens and green card holders.

President Joe Biden has repeatedly mentioned that the U.S. is welcoming Ukrainian refugees. However, the number of ways Ukrainians can legally come into the country is extremely limited. Oleksandr Mosendz is an expert on immigration to the U.S. with 17 years of experience in helping people relocate to the states. Since the beginning of war between Russia and Ukraine Oleksandr has been offering free advise to hundreds of people affected by the invasion. @alex_mosendz

Another way to legally move to the US is through the Diversity Visa Program, also known as the Green Card Lottery. Are Russia and Ukraine included in the list of countries participating in this program? The list of participating countries is announced every October when applications for the Green Card Lottery are available. Russia has not participated in the Green Card Lottery for many years, and it would take a miracle to change that this year. Ukraine has always participated in the lottery and most likely will be included this year as well. Many Russians are openly opposing the war, therefore putting themselves in danger of persecution by the Russian government. Do they currently have a chance to move to the US if they are in danger of persecution? This is true. Thousands of people in Russia are openly protesting the invasion of Ukraine. More than 10,000 people protesting the war actions have been detained in just the past few days. Unfortunately, Russian citizens are now facing difficulties in obtaining US visas. Many people have been refused a visa during the initial days of war. However, there is still a chance to obtain a refugee or a visitor visa for Russian nationals. The key is completing the application correctly to increase the chances of it being processed. I’ve been helping people with that for the past 17 years and have seen many positive outcomes.

SANDBOX FOR GROWNUPS By Volha Piatrouski
A glimpse of Sahara Desert in the heart of Nevada
The Scene
Desert Vibes
The sun is getting low, hitting the rolling sand dunes creating the most spectacular dessert sunset. It’s getting late and my stomach begins to rumble. I start a fire in a portable wooden oven and put a giant pot on heat. Dinner sounds amazing after a long day of non-stop adrenaline rush. I take my shoes off, and a stream of sand pours out on the ground. There is sand everywhere! I find it in curious places. 50

The Mood
Adventure Rush I glance to my right. The boys unpacked their toolbox, trying to put their iron horse back on its feet. The wheels of their ATV are all scattered after the car hit a sharp turn and ramped off the mountain at full speed. They are not worried. It’s what they do for a living at Custom Auto Build. It’s a part of an exhilarating off-road adventure on sandy dunes of the Sand Mountain.
The Plan
Trip Arrangements
The Paradox
Nevada Sand Dunes I look to my right. This iconic desert landscape makes me feel worlds away, somewhere in the heart of Sahara. It’s the last thing you expect to find in the midst of the familiar scenery of Nevada. And yet, it exists, a two-mile long sand dune known as the Sand Mountain. It’s located 20 miles east of Fallon, Nevada and it looks like a glimpse of the Middle East. These sandy rolling hills create a perfect playground for off-road adventurists and make one of the most popular riding destinations in Nevada.
The Rules
Permits & Reservations
This recreation area is federal land administered by the Bureau of Land Management. Permits to access the site are required year round. You can either buy a weekly pass, good for 7 days, or an annual pass that gives you access for the whole year. Daily passes are not available, so even if you only want to ride for a day or two, you might have to buy a weekly pass. However, if you can visit Sand Mountain on Tuesday or Wednesday, the passes are free.
If you choose to come for everal days, you can stay in a hotel in Fallon, Reno, or even Lake Tahoe. We choose to camp on site as it adds to the illusion of being somewhere far away, in the heart of a sandy desert. There is something magical about waking up in the midst of sandy dunes and going to sleep under the light of a million stars, which shine so much brighter in absence of light pollution. Camping is also much cheaper than lodging, and saves tons of time in transit.
The Bottom Line A Must See Attraction
People come to the Sand Mountain for many reasons. Some just want to experience a sandy desert without having to fly to the Middle East. Others come to hike or sandboard. We are a part of a community of off-roading enthusiasts, who keep coming back to these sandy dunes for dirt biking and quad riding. This desert landscape is perfect for jumps, technical tricks, and trail riding which makes a visit to Sand Mountain more than satisfying!

A natural antitumor, anti-inflammatory, antioxidation remedy that can cure anemia and anorexia, prevent diabetes, Alzheimer's disease, and cancer, slow down the aging process, and enhance sexual performance and fertility. Is it real?
My great grandmother and great grandfather lived till they were almost 100 yeas old. It wasn't unusual those days. One could say that life was just easier back then, but that wouldn't be true. Aside from lacking all the medical and technological advancements that simplify our lives today, our ancestors also faced famine, pandemic, and two global wars. So how come in the midst of all these hardships people managed to not only survive, but also stay healthier and live longer than we do? Perhaps, they knew something we don't. So what was the longevity secret of our great-grandparents? Three out of the top five countries with highest life expectancy are located in Asia. In China, longevity has been long valued more than money. An ancient Chinese proverb says, "With money you can see a doctor, but not good health:'This idea of preventive medicine dominates most cultures that rank high on the life expectancy scale. So how did our ancestors manage to stay in good health long before the doctors discovered antibiotics, steroids, antidepressants, and cancer therapies? They trusted nature, which sometimes offers remedies way more powerful than modern drugs.

The people of China, Korea, and America have equally trusted one of such wonders of nature, ginseng, also referred to as the life-giving plant. Native Americans used ginseng root to treat a variety of medical conditions, including high fever, flu symptoms, headaches and even seizures. In traditional Chinese medicine, ginseng was used to increase strength, blood flow, and appetite. It has been prescribed for weakness, anemia and even impotence. For over a millennium people across the world relied on ginseng to have the power to prevent serious illnesses, such as Alzheimer's disease and cancer, slow down the aging process, and enhance sexual performance and fertility. As medical science evolved over time, it proved the efficacy of the herb (ginseng). Researchers have done multiple studies of ginseng and proved that it could be applied to a variety of pathological conditions and illnesses such as anorexia, insomnia, diabetes, impotence, hypodynamia, shortness of breath, heart palpitation, and hemorrhage. The root can also contribute to memory improvement and prevention of degenerative brain diseases such as Alzheimer's.

Ginseng contains over 150 types of active, steroid-like compounds known as ginsenosides. Ginsenosides have a unique biological activity. They are amphiphilic and may interact with and change properties of cell membranes. This attributes ginseng immense medicinal value, such as anti-tumor, anti-inflammatory, anti-oxidation, and inhibition of cancer formation. This explains why people all over the world have referred to ginseng a life-giving plant for thousands of years before modern medicine proved its incredible qualities. I look back at my grandparents and remember the ginseng tea they used to brew before bed all the time. They could harvest the plants in the forest right behind their farm. Unfortunately we don't have such ability our days.
Elliott•s natural foods 3347 El Camino Ave, Sacramento, CA 95821 (916) 481-3173 www.elliottsvitamins.com
As a matter of fact, natural ginseng is pretty hard to find. American ginseng is considered an endangered species and is illegal to harvest on most State lands and all National Parks. It can only be harvested in 19 States from plants that are 5 years of age or older during the designated State harvest season. Beware of scams and only buy ginseng from trustworthy places! It is not uncommon for dishonest manufacturers to mix this expensive root with other herbs to increase their profits. In Sacramento, California, natural ginseng can be found at Elliott's Natural Foods, a reputable, family-owned company that specializes in a wide range of quality supplements, vitamins, and other natural health products.
Elliott's Natural Foods was created in 1952 by the Elliott Family with the intention of making healthy and natural foods more available to health conscious families. The store carries a wide range of nutritional products and wellness items, and is committed to sharing relevant health and wellness product knowledge. Their staff members often come from a background in nutrition or wellness, and all staff members receive regular trainings to provide customers with the best information at hand.
