Russian Art Week is a bi-annual event which takes place in June and November. The major auction houses of Bonhams, Christie’s, MacDougall’s and Sotheby’s all join together to present a series of Russian sales in London. Several Russian exhibitions and related cultural events also take place. We hope you enjoy our guide to this major event. Walera Martynchik is, without doubt, the heir of the highest tradition of Russian Avant-Garde and Abstract Art. His paintings, a seemingly chaotic assemblage of objects and geometric shapes, obey a rigorous order both in terms of composition and use of colour. Each work can be perceived as a symphony, a painted piece of music. Concern with compositional precision and rhythm is derived by early abstract artists such as Kupka, Delaunay, Klee, and Kandinsky. Chromatic choices are underpinned by a profound understanding of the theory of colours.

The Ultimate Travel Company are delighted to announce two escorted tours to Russia for the art connoisseur. They have been created by, and will be accompanied by art historian Theodora Clarke who is an expert on Russian art and European modernism, and is founder and editor of Russian Art + Culture and the Russian Art Week Guide. The cities of Moscow and St. Petersburg are home to some of the world’s greatest works of art, and these tours provide a unique introduction to just some of the masterpieces to be found here. Focussing on the Russian avant-garde and contemporary art in particular, we visit leading galleries such as the State Tretyakov in Moscow and the State Hermitage in St. Petersburg to view works rarely exhibited in the west, by artists such as Kandinsky, Malevich, Chagall, Goncharova and Rodchenko. We also enjoy a brief introduction to Russian art of today. There are two departures planned: Moscow
