York Regional Police has received multiple reports from citizens across the region who have been contacted by unknown suspects, posing as women on various social media platforms. Suspects begin with simple online chat with potential victims. As the communication continues, the suspects encourage the male victims to enter into private video chat rooms, remove their clothing and perform a sex act on themselves, which is then recorded without their knowledge or consent.

The suspects then tell the male victims the video will be released on social media and emailed

to family and friends if they do not receive money by wire transfer.

In these reported cases, investigators believe this is part of a worldwide extortion scam. The male victims in these cases appear to have no connection with each other.

Investigators believe there are likely more victims out there who have not yet come forward.

online extortion scams are often under-reported due to a level of embarrassment on the part of the victims.

This is not the first time something like this has happened. In January of this year, CBC published the article “OPP warn of sextortion scam targeting men”. Constable Bev Gauthier explained to journalists: “The scammers will request a webcam

chat session typically over Skype, and then the subjects then typically show the victims a pre-recorded video of a woman disrobing, which the victims believe to be a live woman”.

"In the last year, the Canadian Anti Fraud Centre is aware of two suicides in Ontario directly related to this type of extortion scam”, she added. However, Gauthier says no charges have been laid for the cases of this kind of scam. "In order to lay a charge, we have to have the accused," she said. "But if they're from another country, we can't."

YORK REGIONAL POLICE IMPROVING CUSTOMER SERVICE York Regional Police (YRP) is proud to announce the expansion of collision reporting service to better serve citizens involved in minor collisions and increase the availability of our frontline officers.

On September 3, 2018, YRP launching a new collision reporting service at the #3 District headquarters in the Town of Georgina and expanding our hours at the current reporting centre in Richmond Hill.

“Expanding the hours in the south end and making reporting services available in the north end will make the process faster and more

convenient for motorists right across York Region”, said Chief Eric Jolliffe.

The move will result in the clearing of minor collisions more quickly, reducing the time drivers spend reporting the collision to police by more than an hour and is also intended to increase the availability of frontline officers to respond to calls for service - time they may have been spending at the roadside for minor, non-injury collisions.

The Community Resource Centre (CRC), located at 10720 Yonge Street, will expand its hours to seven days a week, including holidays, between 8 a.m. and 8 p.m.

Minor collisions that take place in Aurora, King, Markham, Newmarket, Richmond Hill, Vaughan or Whitchurch-Stouffville can be reported to the CRC. #3 District Headquarters, located at 3527 Baseline Road in Sutton, will accept collision reporting from drivers involved in minor collisions in the Town of East Gwillimbury and the Town of Georgina between the hours of 7 a.m. and 7 p.m., seven days a week, including holidays.

If you are directed by police, or if combined damage is believed to be more than $2,000, you must report the collision in person at a colli-

Travellers wanting to continue west to York University will have to transfer onto Viva orange. Viva orange then takes them across Highway 7, in the rapidway, to Vaughan Metropolitan Centre, where they can transfer onto the subway for direct service into the campus.

Students travelling to York University on YRT who transfer onto the TTC Line 1 Subway are now required to pay both the YRT and TTC fare to complete their trip.

YRT is obligated to make this change under a 2009 agreement between the Toronto Transit Commission (TTC) and York Region for the construction of the TTC Line 1 Subway Extension and recently formalized in an Operations and Maintenance Agreement between the two groups.

CHARGES LAID AND ADDITIONAL VICTIMS SOUGHT IN FRAUD INVESTIGATION Investigators with the #3 District Criminal Investigations Bureau have charged a 60-year-old man and believe that there may be additional victims in an ongoing fraud investigation in the Town of Georgina.

The investigation began in early June, when a 72-year-old female victim came forward to report that she may have been defrauded. The victim advised police that she had met the suspect on an online dating site. When they met in person, the victim talked about a legal issue that she was having. The suspect told the victim that he was a lawyer and would be pleased to represent her in court. The victim agreed and began paying cash for legal services that she never received. After the victim paid more than $3,000 she became suspicious and contacted police.

Investigators identified the suspect as 60-year-old Enrico CAGNOTTI and confirmed that he was not a lawyer. On Wednesday, June 6, 2018, investigators located Mr. Cagnotti parked at a gas station in the area of Ravenshoe Road and The Queensway

South. When police attempted to speak with Mr. Cagnotti he drove over a curb and sped away from the area.

A warrant was issued for his arrest and on Thursday, August 9, 2018, investigators were informed that Mr. Cagnotti had been arrested on an unrelated matter in the City of Toronto.

Investigators are releasing an image of Mr. Cagnotti as they believe that there may be more victims.

Charged: Enrico Cagnotti, 60, no fixed address. Alias: Ricardo Giambrone.

Charges: Fraud, Flight From Police, Dangerous Operation of a Motor Vehicle,Breach of Probation. Mr. Cagnotti has been held in custody and is scheduled to appear in the Ontario Court of Justice in Newmarket on Wednesday, September 12, 2018.

TRANSPORT TRUCK DRIVER CHARGED WITH IMPAIRED DRIVING On Monday, August 27, 2018, shortly before 6 p.m., police received a 911 call from a concerned citizen who was driving behind a full-size tractor trailer on Davis Drive, west of Highway 48. Officers located the tractor trailer and were able to get the vehicle stopped west of Woodbine Ave. When officers spoke to the driver they could smell alcohol and observed other signs of impairment. The driver was placed under arrest and a quantity of marihuana was found in his possession. The driver refused to provide a breath sample and also destroyed the breath test instrument. Impaired driving charges increased 21 percent from 2016 to 2017 and so far in 2018 numbers are consistently high. With the legalization of cannabis in October, York Regional Police is already seeing a considerable increase of incidents of drivers being impaired by drugs as well.

Investigators with the York Regional Police Hold-Up Unit have charged two male youths following a robbery at a gas station in the Town of Aurora.

On Friday, August 24, 2018, at approximately 6:30 a.m., officers were called to a gas station located in the area of Yonge St. and Edward St. for a report of a robbery. When officers arrived they spoke with the employee, who advised that a man had entered the store and made a demand for cash. The employee did not comply and the suspect brandished a knife and threatened the employee.

The employee then complied and the suspect fled with a quantity of cash.

Shortly after noon, the suspects were located at a nearby restaurant in the area of Yonge St. and Allaura Boulevard. They were arrested without incident. Charged: 17-year-old male youth, Aurora.14year-old male youth, Aurora.

SUSPECTS WANTED FOLLOWING STREET LEVEL ROBBERY IN NEWMARKET

York Regional Police is seeking public assistance to locate a wanted man and to identify a second suspect following a street level robbery and assault with a knife that occurred in the Town of Newmarket.

On Thursday, August 23, 2018, shortly before 4 p.m., officers were called to the area of Kingsmere Ave. and Ivsbridge Boulevard for a report of a robbery. An 18year-old male victim had been walking in the area when he was approached by two men on bicycles, wearing hoodies with their faces covered. The suspects made a demand for the victim’s backpack. The victim refused and tried to run away but was followed by the suspects. One of the suspects pulled out a knife and cut the victim’s hand and then cut the backpack off of him and fled the area.

When officers arrived they located a 21-year-old passenger in the Chevrolet Cruz, who was unresponsive and sadly succumbed to her injuries. The 22-year-old driver of the Cruz suffered serious injuries and was transported to hospital.

The driver of the Toyota Camry was arrested at the scene for impaired operation of a motor vehicle and transported to hospital with minor injuries.

The unknown man allowed Nadderi into his vehicle and drove away from the area. Investigators are releasing an image of the vehicle that unknown man was driving and are

Why you can smell rain When those first fat drops of rain fall to the hot, dry ground, have you ever noticed a distinctive odor? I have childhood memories of family members who were farmers describing how they could always “smell rain” right before a storm.

Of course rain itself has no scent.

But moments before a rain event, an “earthy” smell known as petrichor does permeate the air. People call it musky, fresh – generally pleasant.

This smell actually comes from the moistening of the ground. Australian scientists first documented the process of petri chor formation in 1964 and scientists from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology further studied the mechanics of the process in the 2010s.

Petrichor is a combination of fra-

grant chemical compounds. Some are from oils made by plants. The main contributor to petrichor are actinobacteria. These tiny microorganisms can be found in rural and urban areas as well as in marine environments. They decompose dead or decaying organic matter into simple chemical compounds which can then become nutrients for developing plants and other organisms.

A byproduct of their activity is an organic compound called geosminwhich contributes to the petrichor scent. Geosmin is a type of alcohol, like rubbing alcohol. Alcohol molecules tend to have a strong scent, but the complex chemical structure of geosmin makes it especially noticeable to people even at extremely low levels. Our noses can detect just a few parts of geosmin per trillion of air molecules.

During a prolonged period of dryness when it has not rained for several days, the decomposition activity rate of the actinobacteria slows down. Just before a rain event, the

air becomes more humid and the ground begins to moisten. This process helps to speed up the activity of the actinobacteria and more geosmin is formed.

When raindrops fall on the ground, especially porous surfaces such as loose soil or rough concrete, they will splatter and eject tiny particles called aerosols. The geosmin and other petrichor compounds that may be present on the ground or dissolved within the raindrop are released in aerosol form and carried by the wind to surrounding areas. If the rainfall is heavy enough, the petrichor scent can travel rapidly downwind and alert people that rain is soon on the way.

The scent eventually goes away after the storm has passed and the ground begins to dry. This leaves the actinobacteria lying in wait – ready to help us know when it might rain again.

A variety of conditions affect our ability to drive, including poor sleep, some prescription medications and alcohol. Cannabis is another Many people use cannabis for medical reasons, others for recreation. Figuring out whether someone should avoid driving can be tricky because of the variety of chemicals contained within the plant, the different ways people use cannabis and the fact that regular users can develop tolerance.

With Canada on the verge of legalizing and regulating cannabis — and modifying its Criminal Code to cover drugimpaired driving — it’s important to figure out how to determine whether someone is impaired.

At Toronto Rehab, we have the most advanced driving simulator in Canada — and we are testing people’s driving abilities after they have used various types of cannabis. The iDAPT DriverLab contains a complete Audi A3, 360-degree field-of-view projection screen, surround-sound system, oneof-a-kind rain and glare simulators and a large seven-degree-of-freedom motion system.

In 2015, police reported 72,039 impaired driving incidents in Canada, with nearly 3,000 involving drug-impaired driving. We use the iDAPT DriverLab to assess various conditions that affect driving performance, including cannabis use for both for medical and recreational purposes.

In Canada, the Senate has passed the federal government’s Bill C-45, which will legalize and regulate cannabis, and Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has set Oct. 17 as the day Canadians will be able to legally consume marijuana. Another bill, C-46, will create new provisions in the Criminal Code of Canada for drug-impaired driving.

Even after the regulations are set for smoking cannabis, edible forms still won’t be approved until the federal government can set rules on packaging, potency and health warnings.

Cannabis is a plant that contains more than 500 chemicals. Two that are being used for medicinal purposes are delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol, commonly known as THC, and cannabidiol, or CBD.

THC is the substance that gives the “high” or euphoria, while CBD reduces the psychoactive effects of THC. Both THC and CBD are used for medical purposes such as relieving pain from multiple sclerosis or nausea from chemotherapy.

Recent data from the Canadian Tobacco, Alcohol and Drugs Survey indicates that 12 per cent of Canadians aged 15 and older had used cannabis in the past 12 months. By comparison, the past-year use of other drugs, including crack, ecstasy, speed or methamphetamines, hallucinogens or heroin, was two per cent.

Some academics and policy makers speculate that

the detrimental effects .

However, regular use of cannabis leads to tolerance.

That may explain why people who use marijuana for medical purposes are generally not impaired. But it may also be due to the type of cannabis they use, and whether it has low concentrations of THC and higher concentrations of CBD.

So when it comes to cannabis and driving, how do you measure impairment?

The effects of smoked cannabis can be felt within minutes, while the effects after ingesting cannabis is only apparent after at least 30 minutes and last for hours.

The concentration of THC within the blood also determines the size of the effect.

The more there is, the greater

The inhaled forms of cannabis reach receptors in the brain within a few minutes and are able to produce the highest euphoric effects. Edibles have a delayed onset of action. Maximum THC blood levels occur between one and six hours later, and the effects that may last for up to 20 hours.

How long should someone wait, once they use cannabis, until they drive or work in a safety-sensitive job?

How can law enforcement professionals test drivers on the roadside, to determine impairment by cannabis?

And finally, what happens when drivers mix alcohol with cannabis?

There are no definite answers to these questions.

The current recommendations from the evidencebased Canadian Low Risk Cannabis Use Guidelines endorses not driving for at least six hours after using cannabis.

But the wait time can be longer depending on the user and the properties of the specific cannabis product used.

Police forces across the country have announced that they will start testing saliva THC levels when they suspect someone of cannabis-impaired driving.

For now, police officers are using the standardized field sobriety test — a series of roadside challenges, including the horizontal gaze nystagmus test, the walk-and-turn test and the one-legged stand test.

However, as there is no evidence that cannabis affects the same areas of the brain as alcohol, these tests may not reveal impairment or may downplay the degree of impairment.

Using the iDAPT Driver Lab, we plan to answer these questions and others, including whether, from a driving perspective, it is safer to treat pain with medical cannabis or opioids.

We’ll also test in-vehicle technologies and roadside devices to detect impairment, such as cognitive tests, as well as devices that can prevent accidents, such as forward and lateral collision mitigation systems. Until then, it’s probably best not to toke and drive or to operate heavy machinery.

How to make a national school food program happen In June, Sen. Art Eggleton tabled a motion calling on the federal government to consult with key stakeholders to develop a cost-shared universal nutrition program across Canada.

He is not the first senator to have made this call. Back in 1997, the House of Commons Standing Committee on Finance made the recommendation “to create a national school nutrition program” but no action was ever taken. In 2015, the Standing Committee on Social Affairs Science and Technology and the Minister of Health advocated “for childcare facility and school programs related to breakfast and lunch programs… and nutrition literacy courses.”

A universal, national school food program would make sure that all students from kindergarten to Grade 12 have the same access to healthy food in school.

The case for such a program in Canada is already strong. So what needs to happen to make this a reality?

Canada is lagging behind other high-income countries in providing nutritious food to children. In a UNICEF report published last year, Canada ranked 37th out of 41 countries on access to nutritious food for children. That is below the United States.

One reason for this is Canada’s patchwork of programs that serve only a fraction of kids. Funding for programs comes from several different stakeholders, including provincial and territorial governments, municipal governments and charities. This contrasts sharply with school food programs in other countries.

In Brazil for example, food is a constitutional right, which means that a national program feeds 47 million students at 190,000 schools each day. The benefits are multiple, not only improving student nutrition, health and social development, but providing wider employment. The program supports local food systems and regional economic development, since 30 per cent of food purchased for the program comes from small family farms.

In Italy, school meals are a central part of education about national culture and health. In Rome, 70 per cent of

ingredients in school meals are required by law to be organic.

These are also local or regional foods, making school meals a local economic growth strategy as well.

In Finland, school lunches, which are free for all students, are the healthiest meal that students eat during the whole day.

These international examples illustrate how healthy food provision is prioritized elsewhere in the world. This pays off through an impressive return on investment for school food programs — of $3 to $10 for every dollar invested.

Because children’s eating habits are more easily influenced than those of adults, interventions aimed at children are also more likely to have the potential to reduce future health-care costs.

Children spend on average six to seven hours or 50 per

cent of their time awake at school which makes schools the ideal medium for instilling lifelong eating habits in a nonstigmatizing way.

Public support for a national program is growing.

Martha O’Connor, former director general of the now defunct Breakfast for Learning Program affirms that “70 per cent of Canadians believe that child hunger in Canada is more important than national unity or the deficit. Strategic investment in a national school nutrition program is an investment in the future of all Canadians.”

Political will is essential for a national school food program to become a reality. And Eggleton’s motion is catalyzing this important conversation about the state of children’s health in Canada.

Growing rates of diabetes, obesity and heart disease among Canada’s population are unsustainable.

The Coalition for Healthy School Food, comprised of 40 organizations across Canada, estimates that a national, universal healthy school food program would cost $1.8 billion per year.

The Coalition is calling on the Government of Canada to initially invest $360 million, through provincial and territorial transfers, in healthy school food programs. The eventual goal would be universal coverage, through a cost-shared model of joint investments from the federal, provincial, territorial and

municipal governments, as well as some investment from notfor-profits and parents where applicable.

The United Kingdom recently implemented a promising strategy of directing the revenue from a national sugary drinks levy to fund school food programs. Diabetes Canada, the Heart and Stroke Foundation and the Childhood Obesity Foundation are making the same recommendation for Canada.

A soda tax could produce $1.7 billion in annual revenue for Canada, just short of the Coalition’s estimate to fund a national school food program.

Given the burden that chronic, diet-related diseases already place on the Canadian health care system — a cost estimated at $190 billion each year — a $1.8 billion investment in the health of our next generation is surely a small price to pay?

The cost of implementing a national school food program will pay for itself through improved mental health, learning and other health outcomes.

Schools have a strong history of successful public health intervention and a national school food program is a critical investment that we all can support. It’s a no-brainer.

As I first learned while visiting Twain’s hometown of Hannibal, Missouri in preparation for teaching “Adventures of Huckleberry Finn,” the contrasts between the two were indeed stark, and the prospects for their eventual union exceedingly poor. Olivia Langdon, known as Livy, was a thoroughly proper easterner, while Sam was a rugged man of the West. Livy came from a family that was rich and well-educated, while Sam had grown up poor and left school at age 12. She was thoroughly pious, while he was a man who knew how to smoke, drink and swear.

Their story is a reminder of the true meaning of love. Despite many challenges, once united, they never gave up on each other and enjoyed a fulfilling 34 years of marriage.

Olivia Langdon was born in 1845 in Elmira, New York to a wealthy coal merchant. Her father, Jervis Langdon, was deeply religious but also highly progressive. He supported Elmira College, which had been founded in 1855 as one of the first in the U.S. to grant bachelor’s degrees to women. He was also an ardent abolitionist who served as a conductor on the Underground Railroad, which offered shelter and aid to escaped slaves from the South. He even offered sanctuary to a fugitive Frederick Douglass, one of America’s greatest abolitionists, who became a lifelong friend.

Her mother, also Olivia, was active in many civic organizations and served as a strong advocate for her children’s education. The younger Olivia suffered from a delicate constitution her whole life. As a teenager she was bedridden for two years after a fall on the ice.

Born in 1835 and raised on the Mississippi River in Hannibal, the young Samuel Clemens worked as a typesetter, a riverboat pilot, a miner and a writer.

His first national literary success came in 1865 with “The Celebrated Jumping Frog of Calaveras County,” a story about a frog and a man who would bet on anyThe human race is a race of cowards; and I am not only marching in that procession but carrying a banner.

Back in the U.S., Clemens accepted an invitation from Charles to visit his family in Elmira. Within days of meeting Livy in 1868, he proposed marriage.

She rebuffed him. Clemens later wrote: “She said she never could or would love me – but she set herself the task of making a Christian of me. I said she would succeed, but that in the meantime, she would unwittingly dig a matrimonial pit and end by tumbling into it.”

Although Livy refused Sam’s proposal, she did offer to enter into a correspondence with him as “brother and sister.” He wrote to her the very next day and kept on writing for 17 months, a total of over 180 letters. One of them reads as follows: “Livy dear, I have already mailed today’s letter, but I am so proud of my privilege of writing the dearest girl in the world whenever I please, that I must add a few lines if only to say I love you, Livy.

For I do love you … , as the dew loves the flowers; the birds love the sunshine; as mothers love their first-born… .

P.S. – I have read this letter over and it is flippant and foolish and puppyish. I wish I had gone to bed when I got back, without writing. You said I must never tear up a letter after writing it to you and so I send it. Burn it, Livy, I did not think I was writing so clownishly and shabbily. Livy’s parents had good reason to be skeptical about the relatively uneducated and uncivilized Clemens, and they asked for references from his friends out west. As Clemens later reported, his friends did little to ease their

They announced their engagement in February of 1869. A year later, they were married.

To Clemens’s surprise, his father-in-law provided lavishly for the newlyweds, purchasing for them a beautiful home in Buffalo, New York, staffed with servants. He also provided Clemens a loan with which to purchase an interest in a local newspaper. “The Innocents Abroad” was soon published, and Clemens rocketed to fame and fortune.

The Clemens’ life was not always happy, however. Soon after their marriage, Jervis Langdon died of stomach cancer, and their first child, a son, was born premature and died of diphtheria at 19 months. Years later, their daughter Susy died at age 24 of meningitis, and another daughter, Jean, died of epilepsy at 29. Only one daughter, Clara, survived. She married a musician and lived to age 88.

Clemens’s brilliance as a writer was nearly matched by his financial ineptitude. His enthusiasm for new techIt is better to keep your mouth closed and let people think you are a fool than to open it and remove all doubt.

When they later built a mansion in Hartford, Connecticut – where they were next-door neighbors to another of the 19th century’s best-selling American novelists, Harriet Beecher Stowe – the deed was in Livy’s name. Clemens also transferred the copyrights to some of his works to Livy, to avoid seizure by creditors.

More importantly, she became proofreader and editor of all his manuscripts. Without her, he believed, his most important works, such as “Adventures of Huckleberry Finn,” would never have been written. Of her role he recalled, “I never wrote a serious word until after I married Mrs. Clemens. She is solely responsible – to her should go all the credit – for any influence my subsequent work should exert. After my marriage, she edited everything I wrote.”

At home their children would listen as their mother read his stories.

When she came to a passage that she thought needed more work, she would turn down the corner of the page.

Clemens later claimed that he occasionally inserted passages to which he knew she would object simply to enjoy her reaction.

Sam and Livy remained deeply devoted to one another throughout their marriage, which ended only with Livy’s death in Italy in 1904 from heart failure.

Clemens himself lived until 1910, devoting his last years to his autobiography.

Social media posts could ruin your college dreams, lawyer warns Merely following Alex Jones on Twitter almost cost one teen a college admission. Another lost his scholarship over a Facebook message about the 2016 election. Anything you post can and will be used against you, a lawyer tells.

“It’s absolutely troubling what some of the colleges are doing,” attorney Bradley Shear (USA), who specializes in social media cases, told RT.com. Many universities are hiring monitoring companies that comb the social media lives of applicants, even going so far as to spy on their search histories and internet activity. “This is a very problematic situation,” Shear said. “It’s a very big problem and it’s only getting worse.”

Shear shared a story about one client of his, a 17-year-old who was asked in his college admission interview why he followed Alex Jones on Twitter.

Two cases with very different outcomes involving the right of a Muslim person to refuse to shake hands with a member of the opposite sex were in the spotlight in Europe.

A Muslim couple in Switzerland lost their bid for citizenship after a municipal commission ruled that their refusal to shake hands with people of the opposite sex showed a disrespect for gender equality.

In Sweden, however, a Muslim woman was awarded 40,000 kronor ($4,350) in compensation after the labour court ruled that a company’s decision to end her job interview after she refused to shake hands with a male interviewer amounted to discrimination.

Many Muslims avoid physical contact with members of the opposite sex, except for those in their immediate family, for religious reasons. The practice has caused contention in Europe, however, where it is custom to shake hands in certain circumstances. In many instances Muslims recognise the greeting by putting their hand to their heart.

In Switzerland, the city of Lausanne determined that the Muslim couple did not meet the criteria for citizenship as their refusal to shake hands demonstrated their failure to integrate. Lausanne Mayor Grégoire Junod argued that freedom of belief and religion is enshrined in local laws but insisted "religious practice does not fall outside the law." Vice Mayor Pierre-Antoine Hildbrand told AFP that “the constitution and equality between men and women prevails over bigotry.”

The couple, whose nationality has not been revealed, has 30 days to appeal the decision.

Sweden’s labour court took an opposing view, however, ruling that in the case of Farah Alhajeh, her refusal to shake hands on religious grounds was protected by the European Convention on Human Rights. It

20-year-old Fardous El-Sakka had been working as a substitute teacher at Kunskapsskolan in Helsingborg, southern Sweden. As her religious beliefs dictate, she did not shake hands with her male colleagues, putting her hand on her heart and bowing instead. Yet one of the male staff members was offended by her refusing him a handshake, Swedish newspaper Expressen states, and reported the incident to the school authorities.

“If anyone is discriminated against here, it is the employee whose hand she refused to take. The man felt extremely offended,” school principal Lidija Münchmeyer told the newspaper. The 20-year-old aspiring teacher says it was the first time someone had felt wronged by her refusal to shake hands with them. She believes the school authorities treated her unfairly.

Fardous’s case is yet another in the growing line of similar incidents both in Sweden and in Europe in general. In June, a male Muslim passport inspector at the Swedish border was reported by female colleagues for refusing to shake hands with them, and in his turn accused them of religion-based discrimination. In July, a Muslim municipality worker in southern Sweden was sacked after refusing to shake hands with female co-workers. Like Fardous, he was told his actions breached equality policies. The man is now suing the state.

Though tech platforms have a legal cover for banning someone by invoking their terms of service, “I’m of the belief that, in general, people should be heard,” Shear told. “And whether or not you like, or agree with, someone’s statements, that’s an individual determination

of everyone using their platform.”

“I’m a big fan of not only personal privacy, but freedom of speech,” he added.

The major problem with social media companies is that they are “invasive” in their demands for personal data, the attorney said. Using technology, private institutions gather information about your race, religion, political viewpoints, and so on. Facebook has even reached out to banks about getting the private information of their customers, according to a recent Wall Street Journal report.

Even as political campaigns seek information on potential voters to better target their online advertising, having little or no social media presence might be an asset for aspiring candidates for public office in the future, as there won’t be any “digital dirt” to dig up on them, the attorney told.

Measuring a colossal 182 meters (600ft) tall and costing an estimated 29.9 billion rupees ($430m) to construct, India’s “Statue of Unity” is set to become the world’s largest statue, seizing the accolade from China.

Sweden may not be the bastion of democracy that the world seems to think it is. A new poll has revealed that a large portion of Swedish youths would prefer experts to run the country in lieu of democratically elected politicians.

The survey was carried out by analysis firm Kairos Future and was issued to 6,000 Swedes, most of whom were aged 16-25.

54 percent of the youths who responded said that “letting experts and not the Riksdag (Swedish parliament) and government decide what is best for the country” would be a positive idea.

The majority of those surveyed rated it a ‘very good’, or ‘quite good’ proposal.

That 54 percent was made up of people from a broad range of political backgrounds, says Swedish newspaper ETC. Åsa Knaggård, who researches the relationship between science and politics at Lund University, told ETC that “young people have a feeling that politicians are incapable of solving the prob-

lems we face”. Knaggård also said that “it's easy to think that politicians just sit in their sandbox and fight with each other”.

According to the survey, a quarter of those youths think it would be good idea to let a “lone strong leader rule with no regard for parliament or elections”.

That same age bracket also favored a knowledge-based right to vote - meaning those who lack political opinions or understanding would lose their right to have a say. 51 percent of the same 1625 age surveyed agreed that voting should not be a right for those who “don't know anything about politics”.

Professor of political science at the Institute for Future Studies, Ludvig Beckman, has spoken out against the findings that could be indicative of concerning attitudes.

“Those who argue that knowledge is a prerequisite for voting rights have traditionally sought to exclude groups, such as workers or blacks, from democracy,” Beckman said.

Pakistan’s new leader has made himself the living example of how his country’s ruling elite should strip itself of its “lavish lifestyle” as he promised to cut his own household servants from 524 to just 2.

During his inaugural speech in Pakistan’s capital, Islamabad, Khan said in order for the country to prosper, an Islamic welfare state must be introduced and debt must be cut via taxation of the rich. He also pledged to slash poverty and illiteracy rates.

India’s “Modicare”, funding 500mln poor, to launch late September – PM Prime Minister of India Narendra Modi has set a date for the launch of his revolutionary health scheme, dubbed Modicare, which will see healthcare covered by the state for around 500 million of its poorest citizens.

Modi, who has previously said that the country can reach its potential only with a healthy population, announced that the health scheme will be operational as of September 25.

“The healthcare initiatives of the government will have a positive impact on (many) Indians,” said Modi during Indian Independence Day address. He added that “it is essential to ensure that we free the poor of India from the clutches of poverty due to which they cannot afford healthcare.”

Indian officials have labeled the

initiative “the world’s largest government-funded healthcare program.” Modicare – officially called the National Health Protection Mission – will give impoverished Indian families health insurance coverage of up to $7,100 every year. Such healthcare coverage will significantly impact millions of Indians, where the annual income per capita is just over $1,900.

Modicare will come as a major boon for many Indians, who often turn to expensive private healthcare due to overburdened public hospitals. According to the 2010 academic study, medical costs are one of the primary causes of poverty in India and force around 63 million Indians below the poverty line due to their private healthcare bills.

Forensic scientists develop technique to identify pedophiles through their hands A British forensic specialist has developed a way to identify pedophiles using only images of the perpetrator’s hands and the novel new system has already helped put a child sex abuser behind bars.

In 2014, Greater Manchester Police enlisted the help of forensic anthropologist Dame Professor Sue Black in an effort to solve a child rape case. The crime in question involved sick footage found on a computer belonging to Manchester man, Jeremy Oketch.

The video showed a man with his face obscured sexually abusing a twoyear-old girl. While police investigators were sure that when they first questioned Oketch in July 2014 he was the perpetrator, officers feared that without an admission of guilt he could walk free.

Black and her forensics team were able to successfully show that custody images of Oketch’s hands matched those in the abuse video. The process is chronicled in BBC documentary ‘The Hands That Convicted A Paedophile’.

The forensic anthropologist says

her system of identifying pedophiles from images where they have attempted to avoid detection centers on analysing skin pigment, scars, creases and vein patterns on a person’s hands.

“If we’re able to automate, then we would be able to use these algorithms that we’ll develop, to sift through the millions of images that are held on databases by police forces around the world,” she said of her attempts to roll out the system globally.

“The chances of you being able to link them before have been close to zero, but now you might be able to get to a point of being able to track where these perpetrators have been going around the world.”

In Oketch’s case, dark pigment under his ring finger nail as well as an indentation on one of his hands were key to the rapist changing his plea to guilty ahead of trial.Oketch was sentenced to 15 years for the rape of the child, with the Greater Manchester Police issuing a statement that he “deserves every second he will spend in jail.”

New Australian bill introduces some of the toughest legislation anywhere in the world for refusing to hand over personal data, while other Western countries are scrambling for their own solutions.

Existing legislation already allows for imprisonment for up to two years for failing to give investigators access when serious crime is involved, but the new Assistance and Access bill, which has gone out for public consultation, before being voted on later on this year, raises the punishment to 10 years.

The Department of Home Affairs says the document is seeking a “reasonable and proportionate response” to such violations. “Encryption and other forms of electronic protection… are being employed by terrorists, child sex offenders and criminal organizations to mask illegal conduct. The exploitation of modern communications technology for illicit ends is a significant obstacle to the lawful access of communications by Australia’s law enforcement and national security agencies,” says its intro.

To give weight to its proposal, the ministry gives an example of a pedophile rapist, who was using mobile messengers to offer drugs to underage teens in exchange for sex. “The suspect was arrested and his mobile phone was seized but despite legislative requirements he refused to provide his passcode. Colombians told to avoid sex to survive heatwave With temperatures soaring in Colombia, locals in one city may soon need cold showers for more than one reason. They are being told to stay cool by avoiding sex.

Santa Marta is a picturesque coastal city on the Caribbean Sea, in the northern province of Magdalena. With summer temperatures rising above 40 degrees Celsius (104 Fahrenheit), it might seem like the perfect time for some sweaty summer loving, but the city’s health secretary has warned loved-up locals to abstain.

Secretary Julio Salas said that avoiding sex in the midday heat was “logical,” just like people would avoid stren-

uous exercise in such conditions. “Therefore, it is better to do it at night when the ambient temperature is lower," he said.

Those with air conditioners, however, have Salas’ blessing to get in as much afternoon delight as they please.

While summer temperatures are usually high in Santa Marta, the city has been in the grip of an intense heatwave in recent weeks. Local medical facilities have been overwhelmed with patients suffering from nausea, vomiting, and headaches – all symptoms of heatstroke.

Temperatures in the coastal city are expected to remain above 30 degrees (86F) for the foreseeable future.

“Tasteless”: Amsterdam “Anne & Frank” bakery to change name amid Twitter outcry The owner of a newly opened bakery in Amsterdam called “Anne & Frank” will change its name after facing accusations of being “tasteless” in his decision to name his pastry business after the Holocaust victim.

Owner Roberto Barsoum said he never wanted to offend anyone and will find a new name for his bakery, which is located near the house where the Jewish teenager wrote the world’s best-selling diary as she hid from the Nazis during WWII. “Anne Frank is a hero for many people and

for me too,” he told the Dutch NU news site. “Because my business is in the same neighborhood as the Anne Frank House, it seemed like a nice name to me.”

Barsoum was blasted on Twitter, with one user writing in Dutch: “Without any kind of shame or decency, a bakery around the corner from the Anne Frank House is trying to attract tourists. Even if the owners were named Anne and Frank, it would still be shocking.”

While another user appeared to imply the owner’s choice was as bad as a business being called ‘Pol’s Pot’ - a play on the name of Cambodia’s infamous dictator Pol Pot, who is believed to have killed up to three million people during his communist rule at the end of the 20th century.

Contestants in the “Miss Germany” beauty pageant will no longer strut their stuff in skimpy bikinis, as organizers are set to remove the “swimwear” category. They say the contest will now focus on “personality.”

"We want to turn “Miss Germany” into a personality [contest]," said pageant CEO Max Klemmer. "For that, the bikini was not very relevant." Contestants will now pose in more modest “summer outfits” instead, from next year’s pageant onwards. The new rules apply to men too. “Mister Germany” will sacrifice its swimwear category in favor of a jeans-and-shirt section.

This decision follows the lead of “Miss America” organizers, who eliminated the swimsuit category earlier this year. Instead of showing off their bodies

in revealing bikinis, contestants will show off their wit, intelligence, and “talk about their social-impact initiatives.”

Paris urinal project turns into social media pissing contest

A builder took his angry work outburst to an extreme degree when he used an excavator to destroy a row of newly built houses because he was reportedly upset that he hadn’t been paid for work he had done on the properties.

Daniel Neagu was arrested at the scene. The 31-year-old man has been charged with criminal damage after using the powerful machine to rip the facade off the buildings, in the small English town of Buntingford.

Resident Elaine Francois called the police as she watched the incident unfold. “It looks like an earthquake or bomb struck,”the 61-yearold told The Sun. “He was laughing and taking photos of the damage.

When police got here he told them he

wasn’t paid and that’s why he did it.

He was totally calm.”

The row of houses was estimated to be worth around £2.5 million ($3.2mln). Residents said they feared for their own homes as Neagu carried out the destruction. Another neighbor, William Griffiths, confronted him during the rampage.

“He said he wasn’t dangerous but hadn’t been paid,” he said. “He got out of the digger and I thought, ‘Great, he’s stopped’. But he got back to carry on. He seemed happy. When police took him away in cuffs he caused no trouble.”

Hertfordshire Police said it has received a lot of enquiries about the bizarre incident. “The offender is still in custody whilst enquiries continue”.

Karl Marx “zero-euro” bill becomes German souvenir hit with 100k sold

A cheeky “zero-euro” bill, issued by a German tourism agency to commemorate the bicentenary of Karl Marx’s birth, has become a runaway success, with more than 100,000 wealth re-distributing purchases on record.

Printed by Trier Tourism and Marketing in honor of Marx’s 200th birthday, the original 5,000 “zero euro”’ notes sold out in less than a month. In the weeks that followed, collectors and tourists alike have pounced on the souvenir bills, with over 100,000 purchases of the commemorative banknote – which sells for three euros – to date.

Marx was born in Trier, a city in southwest Germany, on May 5th, 1818.

The faux bill – which features a portrait of Karl Marx – is slightly larger than a 20 euro note, and is made of the same security paper used by the European Union currency.

"The note is a sales champion,” Hans-Albert Becker, a representative from Trier Tourism and Marketing, told Germany news agency DPA. He added that the souvenirs have been shipped to more than 40 countries, from Australia to South America, but have seen particular success in Asia. Around 30,000 units have gone to China – likely due to the fact that the capitalist-critical philosopher is revered by the country’s ruling Communist Party.

The highly-coveted bill has “all the characteristics of a traditional banknote, including a watermark, holographic protection, tactile marks, effect visible under UV-light, etc.,” French entrepreneur Richard Faille, who originally conceived of the”‘zero euro” souvenir concept in 2015, told Sputnik France.

If you can’t beat them, join them. Paris has done just that by providing public urinators with a more sanitized place to whizz in the open. But not everyone is pleased with public urinals popping up around the City of Love.

A war against street soilage has prompted Paris authorities to roll out a number of devices known as uritrottoirs,

which are essentially toilets for urine mounted on top of flower boxes.

The boxes are currently in place on Place Henri Frenay, Square Tino Rossi, Ille Saint-Louis and Boulevard de Clichy, home to the Moulin Rouge and once the subject of renowned artist Vincent van Gogh. According to the Parisian government, the red urine-collection boxes are filled with straw, which will reduce foul smells and, when filled, can be used for fertilizing plants.

The novel idea comes from Faltazi, a ecological design company based in Nantes. While the urinals may help to curb unsanitary habits, a number of people have taken to social media to express their concern and poke fun at the project.

Laurence Parisot, former head of employer’s union MEDEF, described the attempt as “elegant crap.”

Per Sandberg, deputy head of the Progress Party, which is part of the ruling coalition, stood down from his government position after it emerged he used his work phone on a trip to Iran, despite the Middle East country being

Sandberg, 58, had failed to warn the Prime Minister in advance that he would be bringing the phone with him on his trip with his new Iranian girlfriend and the former beauty model Bahareh Letnes, 28.

The story made the headlines in Norway as it drew condemnation from both his own party and the opposition. The 58-year-old had initially issued an apology over his actions, but as more controversies emerged, including that he had also taken his work phone to China, he decided to resign.

Letnes had been expelled from Norway after three asylum applications were rejected. She was eventually given residency amid fears she would be forced into marriage if she returned to Iran.

According to Kitchen and Bath Design News magazine, the formal definition of a wet room is "a bathroom in which the shower is open or set behind a single wall, its floor area being flush with the floor of the rest of the room and the water draining away through an outlet set into the floor."

Wet rooms can be created from both small and large bathrooms, downstairs bathrooms, or as part of a master suite. Perhaps, a couple of reasons why the wet room has been gaining recent popularity is due to the sought-after spa like bathroom experience. Wet rooms convey luxury with their clean lines and minimal design. They also allow the free standing tubs with the chance to steal the show.

Make sure your decks are fully sealed and protected. If not, freezing water will widen cracks and harsh weather will dry out the wood, creating new cracks. If you see unprotected wood, power wash your decks and apply new sealant.
