Mayor Maurizio Bevilacqua’s annual address at the Vaughan Chamber of Commerce Mayor’s Luncheon highlighted the City’s remarkable growth in the last eight years. The message, to a sold-out crowd of more than 800 business professionals - the largest event attendance in the Chamber’s 41-year history - was that Vaughan has a thriving economy and the future is bright.

York Region is home to one of the most highly educated workforces in all of Canada Investigators with the York Regional Police Major Collision Investigation Unit are seeking witnesses that were driving on Stouffville Road prior to a fatal collision on Sunday, April 1, 2018. Investigators have obtained information that two additional vehicles were driving in the area at the time of the collision and may have witnessed the collision or the driving behavior leading up to the collision.

On Sunday, April 1, 2018, at approximately 6 p.m., police responded to a multi-vehicle collision on Stouffville Road between Bayview Ave. and Leslie St. involving blue, two-door Lamborghini, white Dodge Caravan, blue Toyota Corolla, silver Toyota Corolla and grey Mercedes.

The passenger in the Lamborghini, a 32-year-old woman from Newmarket, was deceased at the scene. The driver of the Lamborghini, a 39-year-old man from Richmond Hill, was transported to hospital with serious but nonlife-threatening injuries. The driver of the Toyota, a 44-year-old man from Toronto and the passenger, a 36-year-old woman from Toronto, were both transported to hospital in life-threatening condition. Their conditions have improved and they are now stable. The drivers of the other three vehicles each suffered minor injuries. The investigation is ongoing.

In order to paint an accurate picture of income, employment, labour force, housing and immigration York Region completed an analysis of all Census Canada release 2016 data.

The data helps York Regional Council and staff best understand the population and economy, to best support residents and businesses with regional services.

Highlights include: York Region is home to an educated workforce: York Region is home to one of the most highly educated workforces in all of Canada. 51 per cent have a university degree and 70 per cent of the working age population (aged 25-64) have completed postsecondary education. A total of 66.7 per cent of all the York Region’s population are employed.

York Region’s unemployment rate is among the lowest in the province, at 6.4 per cent.

In terms of industry, knowledge-based employment is on the rise as and the Agriculture industry continues to grow, employing 3,255 people.

People are working longer: There is an increase in people working past the age of 65. The proportion of York Region seniors participating in the workforce almost doubled over the past decade, rising from 2.5 per cent to 4.5 per cent.

We are a diverse community: Approximately 47 per cent of York

Region residents are immigrants.

This diverse group represent more than 230 distinct ethnic origins. Just over half are highly educated, with 51 per cent holding a university degree. Of the 515,225 immigrants living in York Region, 51,410 arrived between 2001 and 2016.

More residents are taking transit to work: The number of commuters taking public transit to work is up by 45 per cent. This represents a shift towards live-work communities, where offices are easily accessible by rapid transit. The recent introduction of three subways stops into York Region is expected to improve the travel expe-

rience further. The car however isn’t going away anytime soon, 77.3 per cent of commuters still rely on it to commute, travelling approximately 34.6 minutes per average commuting duration.

York Region ranks high on household income: The Region ranks second highest among all municipalities in Ontario with an average household income of $95,776.

The Region has the highest rate of home ownership in the Greater Toronto Hamilton Area at 85.8 per cent. However, the cost of living surpasses income growth in York Region as per Ontario consumer price index measurement.

The Overview The government announced in the budget back in March that the Liberals have not been pleased with some Canadians who are using corporations to pay less taxes, and that changes would be made. These changes are to affect the wealthy and will be effective in 2018.

Income sprinkling involves diverting income from a high-income individual to family members with lower personal tax rates, or who may not be taxable at all.

At the moment, the law allows incorporated business owners to split their income with their spouse and any kids between the ages of 18 and 24, even if they had nothing to do with the company.

When it comes to income sprinkling of salary income, the current tax rules are strict in that the Income Tax Act only permits “reasonable” amounts to be deducted from the corporation’s income when salary fees are paid to employees, including family members. This rule is meant to prevent a parent who owns a corporation from paying his spouse or child an annual salary when he or she is not actually involved with the business.

EIGHT MEN CHARGED IN BREAK-AND-ENTER INVESTIGATION Investigators with the York Regional Police Break and Enter Task Force have laid charges against eight men in connection with multiple residential break and enters.

In late 2017 officers began an investigation looking at several individuals who were believe to be responsible for numerous residential break and enters that occurred in York Region. In each case, the suspects targeted high-end homes in the evening hours once it was dark. The suspects operated in small groups and often used rental vehicles to avoid being identified. The suspects forced entry through back windows or rear sliding glass doors then stole safes, cash and jewelry from the homes.

Investigators have arrested eight men and laid multiples charges in connection with this investigation.

SIX VEHICLES SEIZED AND NUMEROUS DRIVING CHARGES LAID AFTER WEEKEND INCIDENTS York Regional Police, in its continuing effort to eliminate street racing and other high-risk driving behaviours,

The number of children being forced into modern slavery has soared to a record high. New figures reveal that British children account for the largest proportion of reported cases.

Statistics released by the National Crime Agency (NCA) show the number of potential victims of slavery has increased by 35 percent to 5,145 since 2016. That is the highest since records began in 2009, but investigators warn that it will continue to rise.

The NCA said most victims are being used for sex or as drug mules by “county lines” groups, which use vulnerable children as couriers to transfer drugs from

impounded six vehicles this weekend and laid numerous traffic-related charges.

On Friday, March 23, 2018, at approximately 10:45 p.m., a vehicle was observed on Highway 404 near Steeles Ave.traveling at a high rate of speed.

The vehicle, a 2016 Mazda, was also veering across lanes without signalling, cutting off and passing other vehicles including an unmarked police vehicle. The vehicle was stopped and the 18-year-old male driver from Markham was charged with Careless Driving and Stunt Driving.

His license was suspended for 7 days and the vehicle was towed.

In a separate incident, on Sunday, March 25, 2018 at approximately 1 p.m., Road Safety Bureau officers patrolling in the area of Leslie St. and Major Mackenzie Drive East observed a number of vehicles that were travelling together and heading to Hwy. 404. With the assistance from the Ontario Provincial Police (O.P.P.), 8 vehicles were stopped and inspected. Five of the eight vehicles were deemed unsafe and the O.P.P. removed the plates. One driver, an 18-year-old man from Richmond Hill had his vehicle towed and was charged with multiple offences including Unsafe Vehicle, No Muffler, Fail to Display Two Plates, Windshield Obstructed and No Horn.

Call 911 if you see dangerous driving practices that could cause personal injury or loss of life. When contacting police, try to note the vehicle’s location, direction of travel, make, model, license plate number and driver’s description.

ARREST MADE FOLLOWING SERIES OF ROBBERIES Investigators with the York Regional Police Hold-Up Unit, with the assistance of the Toronto Police Service, have arrested and charged a man in connection with several robberies in York Region and Toronto involving a suspect armed with a needle.

During a three-month period that began on December 28, 2017, York Regional Police and the Toronto Police Service have conducted paralleling investigations into a suspect believed to be responsible for several robberies that occurred in Richmond Hill, Vaughan and Toronto. In each of the robberies, the suspect entered retail stores and asked an employee for high-value items including laptop computers and high priced winter jackets. The suspect then produced a syringe and threatened the employee. The suspect fled on foot with the items. The victims were not physically injured.

On Tuesday, March 27, 2018, at approximately 12:30 a.m., York Regional Police responded to a residence in the area of Mount Albert Road and Second Concession for reports that two people had been stabbed.

One of the victims, a 19-yearold man from King, was taken to hospital with minor injuries. The second victim, Keegan BLYTH, 19, of East Gwillimbury, was taken to hospital with injuries that were initially believed to be non-life-threatening. On March 29, 2018, he succumbed to his injuries. As a result of this, the homicide unit took over the investigation.

Two of the suspects were arrested on March 28, 2018 and were found in possession of a quantity of drugs. The third suspect was arrested and charged on March 30, 2018. CHARGED: - Justin RYAN, 22, of Newmarket - Dimytri INGRAM-PIRUZEVSKI, 19, of Newmarket - A 16-year-old male from Toronto.

The Homicide Unit has taken over the investigation and are appealing for witnesses. Anyone who observed anything suspicious in the area at the time is asked to please come forward.

FOUND HUMAN REMAINS IN THE CITY OF MARKHAM Investigators with the York Regional Police #5 District Criminal Investigations Bureau are investigating after a body was located next to the Rouge River, in the area of Warden Avenue and Highway 407.

On Monday, April 2, 2018, at approximately 10:40 p.m., officers responded to a 911 call regarding a body located next to the river.

The remains are that of an adult male who has not yet been identified. Anyone with information is asked to contact the York Regional Police.

CHARGES LAID FOLLOWING SEXUAL ASSAULT AT BUS SHELTER Investigators with the York Regional Police Special Victims Unit – Sexual Assault Section have charged a 57-year-old man following a sexual assault that took place at a bus shelter in the City of Vaughan.

On Monday, March 26, 2018, York Regional Police officers responded to a bus stop on Bass Pro Mills Drive for a report of a sexual assault. The victim, a 13-year-old boy, advised that he had been sexually assaulted by a man at the bus shelter and pointed out the suspect to the officers. The man was arrested and has been charged.

So What's All the Fuss About a Russian “Banya”?

As we can see the Russian “Banya” (Sauna) is loved by every culture far and wide, the question is why is there such an attraction?

In Russian folklore there is a story that the banya was inhabited by a spirit known as Bannik. Bannik was said to have the ability to predict the future. If one wanted to be consulted by him they would stand with one’s back exposed in the half-open door of the Banya. He would gently stroke one’s back if all boded well, but if trouble was in your future, he would strike your back with his claws.

In the reality of it all the Russian Banya is a quintessential experience that everyone should enjoy. We continue to introduce our readers about different cultures and traditions of the nations who live in Canada Tartan Day is a celebration of Scottish heritage on 6 April, the date on which the Declaration of Arbroath was signed in 1320, the Scottish declaration of independence.

It originated in Canada in Nova Scotia in the mid-1980s, where it was declared an official day by the provincial government. It then spread across the country, with many provinces joining in. On October 21, 2010, the Minister of Canadian Heritage officially declared April 6 as Tartan Day. Tartan Day celebrations include parades with pipe bands, highland dancing and sports, and other community gatherings with Scottishthemed events. While a variety of tartans are displayed, the maple leaf tartan is Canada’s official tartan.

Tartan Day is an observance and not a public holiday in Canada. 15.1% or 4.7 million Canadians claim Scottish descent.

What is Tartan?

Tartan is a pattern consisting of criss-crossed horizontal and vertical bands in multiple colours. Tartans originated in woven wool, but now they are made in many other materials.

Tartan is particularly associated with Scotland. Scottish kilts almost always have tartan patterns.

Tartans of all varieties are worn on Tartan Day, which recognizes and celebrates the contributions of Scots and their descendants in Canada.

Tartan etiquette Since the Victorian era, authorities on tartan have stated that there is an etiquette to wearing tartan, specifically tartan attributed to clans or fami-

Kilts A kilt is a knee-length non-bifurcated skirt-type garment, with pleats at the back, originating in the traditional dress of Gaelic men and boys in the Scottish Highlands. It is first recorded in the 16th century as the great kilt, a fulllength garment whose upper half could be worn as a cloak.

The small kilt or “modern� kilt emerged in the 18th century, and is essentially the bottom half of the great kilt. Since the 19th century, it has become associated with the wider culture of Scotland, and more broadly with Gaelic or Celtic heritage. It is most often made of woollen cloth in a tartan pattern.

Clan Armstrong tartan It is generally stated that one of the most popular tartans today is the Royal Stewart tartan. This is the personal tartan of Queen Elizabeth II. The sett was first published in 1831 in the book The Scottish Gael by James Logan. In addition to its use in clothing, such as skirts and scarves, Royal Stewart tartan has also appeared on biscuit tins for Scottish shortbread.

Poor children are now officially fatter than their rich-kid counterparts. A new study has revealed that kids from poorer families weigh more for the first time in history – a reversal of the traditional weightwealth pattern.

Researchers looked at data collated from 5,400 babies born in 1946, 17,200 born in 1958, 17,300 in 1970, and 16,000 in 2001. The average child is 6.35 kg heavier by the time they reach 15 years than kids born in the 1940s. They also have a higher body mass index (BMI) despite an increase in height. The study also found that 11-year-old children from poorer households have closed the 4.1cm height gap that existed in the 1940s to 1.2cm, but now weigh more.

University College London research officer David Bann carried out the study. He said that the introduction of fast food into the modern diet has had a significant impact. “From the 1980s onwards is when the obesity epidemic really hit the UK,” he said. “That’s when the pattern of our diets changed and people became more sedentary. In the past, diets in some respect were healthier, children had more vegetables than now. You have to change the environment, make it more difficult to gain weight rather than leave it to the individual.

The UK government is considering further sanctions on fast-food advertising, following a rule change in July 2017. Good Friday Procession: 5 decades of tradition Good Friday was marked on Toronto streets with a procession through Little Italy Every year during Holy Week, St. Francis of Assisi Church holds an annual Good Friday Procession commemorating the crucifixion of Jesus Christ. Parade, which starts usually at 3:00 pm from the surrounding area of St. Francis of Assisi Church (Mansfield Ave/Grace St), makes its way through the Little Italy neighbourhood in Toronto. The event had approximately 6,000 participants.

In Toronto’s Little Italy, people disagree about whether the Good Friday procession started in 1955 or 1953. It started at St. Agnes Parish then an Italian parish and now Portuguese but moved with the Italian community to St. Francis of Assisi. Inspiration for the procession was the discovery of a statue of Jesus at St. Agnes which had been mysteriously walled off into a kind of hidden closet in the basement of the church. Parishioners enthusiastically cleaned and painted the old statue. At that point Italian immigrants thought a procession was the will of God. And the procession began in an alleyway behind St. Agnes. By the 1960s it was too big for the alley and made its way out onto College Street.

Sex for rent: Growing trend prompts major London landlord to offer women-only viewings A major London landlord is offering women-only viewings amid an increasing number of “sex-for-rent” cases. Up to 250,000 women have been offered free or low rent in exchange for sex in the past five years, figures show.

Build-to-rent developer UNCLE will be offering women the chance to look around flats with female agents. The plan aims to protect potential tenants from increasing instances of being “inappropriately approached” by landlords seeking sexual favors.

The move comes as a report by housing charity Shelter revealed that some 250,000 women had been offered free or discounted rent since 2013 on condition that they consented to some form of physical encounter with their landlord. Ryan Prince, founder and chief executive of UNCLE, said he was shocked at the extent to which the practice by “people in a position of power and influence” has spread. “I couldn’t believe how many women had been inappropriately approached in some shape or form,” he added, according to the Evening Standard. The property developer has two apartment blocks in New Cross and Stockwell, and is completing a 45-story tower in Elephant & Castle. At least half of its 1,000 ten-

ants are women, most of whom are in their 20s and 30s.

“We have resident women managers, so if a woman is uncomfortable with doing a show-around with a man, they can ask for a woman,” Prince added.

Kassy Essiet, resident manager at UNCLE Elephant & Castle, said: “The kind of behavior highlighted by Shelter’s report is outrageous. Renters in the UK are treated like second-class citizens and this report suggests women receive the worst of it.”

When protesters marched infront of Michael Hunter’s restaraunt for animal rights, the chef and owner of Antler Kitchen and Bar which serves wild deer and bison took it into his own hands to protest a little in what some call a tasteless manner while others say it was subtle yet powerful.

“Antler has blood on their hands” and “Murder” was some of the signs protesters held up since December filling the sidewalk front of Antler.

The initial intent of the protests was due to a sandwich chalkboard outside of the restaraunt saying “Venison Is the New Kale”. This did not sit well with local vegan activist Marni Ugar who noticed the sign.

The feud started last year, but the protests began in December and since then Ugar has

staged small protests infront of Hunter’s restaraunt holding signs and chanting their frustrations with the restaraunt and animal slaughter.

Michael Hunter attempted to advertise vegan dishes but this wasn’t enough for protesters. After few negotiations the owner of the restaurant decided to have a counter demonstration of his own. He brought out a raw deer leg to the front table of his restaraunt, cut and prepared it, cooked it and ate it infront of the protesters.

1.Stop thinking you can work with anyone or defining too wide of a niche. One of the reasons why new entrepreneurs struggle is because they are trying to help too large of a group of people. Even though it’s human nature to help as many people as possible, the trouble with this approach is your marketing message end up being too diffused and won’t be appealing enough to compel people into action. Even if you narrow down your niche to a specific class of individuals, such as business owners or real estate agents, this is still too wide of a reach and your message cannot possibly appeal to everyone within those groups. Get clear on whom it is you want to work with. Be specific. What gives you the most joy when working

2. Get a clear picture in your mind of what your ideal client "looks" like. Once you have a sub group of your "A-Listers" now define specifics on certain characteristics they all have in common. Ask yourself questions like: a) Are they predominantly male or female? b) What

Do you have a step-by-step process, system or software that will help them solve their problem? Ensure your marketing message clearly outlines how you can deliver the results they seek.

5.Understand why they should hire you instead of your competitor. Part of the process of

identifying your niche is to also be clear on what makes you different from your competitors. What is your USP - your Unique Selling Position? Do some research on others who could also help solve similar problems and identify why you are different from their approach. Your marketing message can then showcase those differences to help your niche decide to work with you.

In order to find ideal clients, it’s important to take these steps first and clearly understand who it is that makes up your niche market. The next step is to write your marketing message specifically tailored towards that group of people. Your marketing message must be clear and with the same language your niche uses so they can relate to what you’re saying and trust that you know what they are going through and can help them.

Stop Thinking You’ll Be Losing Out On Opportunities. Avoid falling into the trap of thinking you don’t want to turn anyone away and will lose income opportunities if you focus on a niche. Reading Body Language Gestures Depression is an enormous problem across the world. In the United States alone, it's estimated that more than 14 million adults suffer from depression every single year.

Let’s start with an extremely simple body language gesture. Leaning forwards is the universal sign of interest. If you’re talking to someone and they lean forward, you know they’re listening to you.

Leg over Chair Arm: A person witting with their leg over a chair arm is showing indifference. When talking to someone, if they do this it means they’re not interested.

Head Shake: Of course, you already know that shaking your head means "no." But did you know that if you speak while shaking your head, your listener is more likely to disagree with you.

Nodding your head is a sign of agreement, but more than this, if while you are the one talking you nod your head, your listener is more likely to agree with you. Weird.

Holding Hands Behind Head: A person holding their hands interlocked behind their head is

showing that they feel superior. It’s a classic sign of arrogance. Don’t do this, it will make people dislike you.

Chair Straddling: When people straddle chairs they are showing aggression. They use the front of the chair to protect their own body while they try to dominate a conversation.

This definitely is not good social etiquette!

Legs Spread: When a guy stands with his legs spread he is deliberately showing strength and dominance. This is a classic body language gesture used by alleged "alpha males."

Sucking a pen can only mean one thing - insecurity.

Tucking head into shoulders: Another sign of insecurity and fear, we tuck our head into our shoulders when we feel worried or concerned.

These are some of the most common body language gestures and you likely knew a lot of their meanings already. In other words, you already have an intuitive ability to read people’s body language. Trust your gut instinct when watching people: what your instinct tells you is usually true.

To have a new name added to the register of names allowed in Iceland, it must meet a number of requirements. The spelling of the name should comply with rules of Icelandic phonetics and spelling. The new name should be easily adjustable to case forms (there are four cases in the Icelandic language). To crown it all, the name should be given a grammatical gender that must correspond to the sex of the child that has received this name. These rules are of special importance as for the vast majority of Icelanders, their patronymic is used as surname.

Moscow hotels ined for hiking prices for World Cup

Russia's consumer rights watchdog “Rospotrebnadzor” has fined Moscow hotels for a total of almost 6 mln rubles ($105,569) for overpricing in the run-up to the FIFA World Cup, the watchdog reported.

The Moscow branch of “Rospotrebnadzor” carried out 127 checks when preparing for the 2018 FIFA World Cup, the report says. Based on these checks, 198 persons and 181 companies were brought to account for violation of the consumer protection law and the health requirements.

The hotel prices are regulated by the government’s order, with the maximum tariffs starting operating one month before the World Cup. The fine for exceeding this level is 50,000 rubles ($887) for officials and for companies it is twice as much as the proceeds gained from overpricing.
