Silver Plough winner Murray Redmond.
2nd Silver Plough win Murray Redmond of Methven has won the Silver Plough for the second year in succession. Redmond won at the New Zealand Ploughing Championships held recently at Cambridge, with the Silver Plough sponsored by Case IH. The two wins mean he will represent New Zealand at the 2012 World Championships in Croatia and again at the 2013 Worlds Championships in Calgary, Canada. With a total of 371.5 points, Redmond won the Silver Plough by 12.5 points from the runner up and won a silver medal for his ploughing on the first day and gold for the second day. He was also awarded the Royal Agricultural Society of New Zealand medal. Redmond has had a short career in competitive ploughing, only starting after his father Bruce retired from the sport after winning the World Championship at Methven in 2010. Murray had spent two years at Lincoln University followed by a one year OE, before returning to the 180ha family farm – a sheep and cereal cropping unit. He had only competed four times before qualifying and won last year’s Silver Plough at his first attempt. For the championships he uses a 60hp Ford 4610. The plough is based on a Kverneland but has had “many modifications” including plastic mould boards. For the 2012 World Championship he is taking his own plough and will be provided with a tractor, and plenty of time to practise beforehand.
