We knew it had to happen, eventually, the string of four cooler than average summers would come to an end. This summer has been the hottest since 2011. As a result of the hot weather, REC’s usage has hit an all time high. This is coupled with the struggle to get supplies and materials. Some transformers have jumped in price by ten thousand dollars and inventory is limited. We have had a truck ordered for 17 months – and still no guarantee of when it will arrive. Materials needed for line improvements have nearly a year waiting period, but management and staff are working diligently to get what is necessary.
The good news is we have not been in danger of having power shortages like other parts of the country have experienced.
However, the bad news of the high demand for power all over the nation has increased the price for wholesale power significantly. While REC has not raised rates, the power cost adjustment has caused price increases. The high fuel cost has been caused by the price of natural gas and the demand for power.
Thankfully our reliability factor remains at 99.9%. Outages have been minimal and short in duration. We know prolonged outages can cause server distress when the temperature reaches 105 degrees, so we work to keep the power flowing.
As we think about the fall and winter, we do not know if it will be mild or icy, but we do know REC will be prepared. REC is strong financially and can handle any type of weather. It will always be the goal of the Board of Trustees, management and staff to deliver electricity reliably at the most economical cost.
