Picture Perfect Installation - Interactive Media Speculative design Jan. 2021 Individual Project Brief: An interactive installation for raising awareness of the pressure people put on themselves because of the tendency to pursue ‘picture perfect’ Online and also in real life.

Inspiration

Desk Research

I was inspired by the idea that people are always want to pursue ‘Picture Perfect’ in real life. Including myself, I tended to show my best skin condition to public all the time.

With the ideas of exploring what are the situations people feel not comfortable about their appearance and how do people deal with it, I divided the research into two sections, Online platform and real-life news. Real-life News How people satisfied with how they look

Selfie obsessed' teenager Danny Bowman suicidal after failing to capture ”The perfect selfie”. It spent him 10 hours to take up to 200 photos of himself a day.

The place I feel least confident about my body is the birthmark on my back shoulder. I always want to wear clothes that can cover it. I almost went to get a tattoo to cover it.

A short film by a Chinese director, Wei Zhao. It talks about what kind of body shame girls have and how do they feel about it. And then comes to the question of what is beauty, is it only about to be thin and tall?

Finding

The massive platforms that people use to create profiles and appearance that represent themselves Online.

I also realized that people around me have the same worries about their moles, freckles, birthmarks, scars, stretching marks, etc.

79% Unsatisfied

(Data from Ipsos.com)

Real-life could be cruel and hard to create perfect images to show to the public.

People feel not satisfied with how they look both Online and in real-life.

Multiple filters with beauty effects. This app also the features of eraser, brush, skin smoothing, facial features resizing.

Filters divided by the use of situation. Color filters mainly, beauty effects available.

More creativity and diversity here. Mainly fun filters, but also a lot of filters have beauty effects.

Video call program. Very basic beauty effects.

Question What are the things people feel dissatisfied about their appearance?

Primary Research Physical appearance confidence level in real life • very easy to be seen acnes or other unwanted facial features

Less Confident

•people compare themselves with friends and influenced by them

Confident

Case Study

Physical appearance confidence level Online • people only show perfect moments of themselves Online

Confident

• people can edit contents to however they want

Less Confident

What are the anxieties you have about your appearance? How do you deal with them?

Mike: My face are all over freckles now because I didn’t take care of my skin very well when I was young. I feel not very confident when people talk about my freckles.

Insights

Lisa: I know I’m getting old, but I still want to look young. I use filters to smooth my skin for photos and I went to get line and wrinkle treatments. I’m not sure if there are side-effects, but everyone around me are doing that too.

Meggie: I had a mole on my leg that slowly grow hairs on it. People always notice that, I think it’s ugly, so I went to the doctor's.

Skin Condition is the most-talked about factor that affects how confident people think of their appearance.

Body shame is everywhere, people try to show their perfect picture both Online and in real life.

Xuan: I feel I’m overweight but my friends are all skinny, so I always want to Photoshop my myself to look thinner when I took pictures with them or I just have my face in the picture, not the whole body.

Jessi: I had a birthmark on my face since I was born. I was afraid talking to people because they just laughed at me when I was in elementary school. I felt much more confident after removing them.

I don’t have too much anxieties but I do use all kinds of selfie-taking apps. I enjoy spending time editing selfies, such as making my eyes bigger, my face smaller...I want to look nice in my pictures on social media. Everybody looks nice on social media.

People tend to use filters or Photoshop for their selfies to alter their unsatisfied appearance.

A few people choose to get the aesthetic treatments to alter cosmetic appearance, remove unwanted features on their body.

Winnie Harlow She is a Canadian fashion model who has vitiligo all over her body. The uniqueness it bring to a her skin is so beautiful that makes her one of the most unique models in the world.

Sara Grace Wallerstedt She is a 21 year-old model. She has freckles since birth that has darkened over time. Her freckles which seem to have burst from the bridge of her nose, scattering among her face and body.

Padma Lakshmi She is an Indian American author, activist, model, and television host. She has a seven-inch scar on her right arm from a car accident when she was 14 and she chooses not to hide it. • Skin conditions could come with nature or by accidents. Some skin conditions are flat, some are rough and uneven that you can feel the bump. • People with these skin conditions had been judged by others. However, these skin textures become their biggest icon and sign. They are confident about themselves with the marks.

Development

Ideation

According to the research and the case study, I found that people are most worried about their skin condition.

This projection tends to encourage people to embrace their body, accept the all the flaws they feel “not pretty” on the body. Everyone is special, everyone's body should be appreciated and loved.

There are many types of skin condition features that come at birth or develop overtime.

Body Skin Condition

These findings inspired me to think of fruits and fruit skins.

papaya

In the aging process, fruit skin gets wrinkled, rotten, drying out just like when human skins are aging. Fruits are close to human beings and everyday life. They also look alike human skin.

According to the desk research, people use Online meeting platform during the pandemic, and they have options to use filters or other facial features. So I decide to make the output in two different forms to interact, one is the digital form interaction, and anther is the physical interaction. Digital Interaction

Fruit Skin Texture

Participants can interact with laptop to see how they look with the blemish Online

pear Texture Isolation

They could take pictures with the unique blemish and save the picture as a background

Fruits also create “scars, moles freckles” themselves naturally or due to transportations or other factors.

Physical Interaction The projection presents the person with fruit dots all over their body The projection could present multiple people with multiple fruit dots

banana

orange

The projection changes as people change their postures

•The projections are fruit dots, blemish that replace human skin. •The laptop generates one fruit and dots that match with the participant’s skin texture. •On the side of digital output, filters with fruit dots will be used while interactions.

According to the research on different skin textures, I found these textures are the most common ones. The similarity between them and different fruit dots inspire me to combine them.

Code&circuit Arduino code:

Base on the widespread use of filters and facial beautify features Online, people tend to hide features that they are consider “unattractive” on their faces. I decide to make a UI design as part of the output of this project, which encourages people to think again when they take pictures with filters. What’s the thing that you want to hide?

Picture Perfect A project about embracing your unattractive features on your body

Have you ever tried to hide your unattractive feature on your face or body? Lead participants to the topic

wrinkle I use arduino and max/msp/jitter for the interaction. Arduino reads the serial signal and send to max for trigging projection by an IR sensor.

What is beauty? We want you to decide

Is beauty only for those who are tall, thin, with fine, smooth, tight skin?

Comment & Reflection There are comments in two directions. One is the idea is good, the use of fruit skin is subtle and great metaphor for human beauty. And another direction is some people feel the projection is a bit scary. One person says, the dots projected on body are just look like chickenpox. I’m actually glad that people say different things. Fortunately, people tend to think about the deeper meaning of beauty, how to define beauty.

“ Perfect looking is also a drawback, very far from good looking in general standard could also be a perfect looking.”

“The projection kind of make me feel secure, because I don’t have to worried about if my skin is in good condition. I can dance in the dark!”

One person asked an interesting question ”Will you still like yourself if your skin turn to this way? I’m not sure if i can take it all in if my skin like this”. I think I understand that people feel it scary when their skin looks like the way in the projection. But I would like to ask why we feel scary. Because it’s not good looking in our general beauty standard. And who gets to define the way of beauty? There’s no right answers for the questions, but we start to think about the question is a amazing thing.

Critique User experience design & Service design Aug. 2021 Individual project Brief: A social innovation project that has a web platform and offline services as outputs. It offers a new way of interaction with others which helps people get the information they want, makes social life more meaningful.

context From the observation that people enjoy critiquing things and people. I think it’s a good thing that people give their true opinions and conmunicate with others even though it goes furious and crazy sometimes. The roast comedy show is an example of providing platforms for people to roast things and people.

Roast is a great thing to let people talk about their unique oberservation perspective about the shortcomings of people or the downsides of things.

critique!

What is critique? The roast battle make me think of...

The most important thing is that roast could let you say things you don’t usually say for all kinds of reasons, but you still want to say and stand for your point.

Sometimes, we joke with friends by roasting them and being roast by friends. We don’t feel angry but just getting more connected to friends.

I’m impressed by the art of talking while roasting. It could make people feel angry and feel humorous at the same time.

It’s hard to take whatever other people say to you. It’s about the mindset and braveness.

However, roast is more on the

comedic and funny path. It’s made for audience to laugh at and also realize some truth in life at the same time.

There’s still things deserve to have a deeper conversation and it should be treat seriously. Or at least giving the serious topics a serious platform to talk about. And it’s what we called it

Why critique is important?

A process of learning and reflection Help people have better understanding of people and things

Self-awareness

Make things well-rounded by including opinions from multiple perspective

Critique could happen in every filed

Help people accept everyone’s difference

Make communication more effective

With the ideas of exploring fileds that critiques could take place, I devide three sections to talk about how and why critiques might exist, business, art and culture, society.

FINDINGS Community is a very important feature in social platfroms. It helps gather people with same interests and give people a belonging feeling. In communities, people might feel safe to critique. Another important feature is categorized information. This helps user find what they want as quick as they can. On the review platforms, the authenticity of users and customers is important. However in these social and review platforms, it’s still not easy for people to find Key Opinion Leader(KOL) for the specific questions or give opintions on something. It’s everywhere but not catehorized.

INTERVIEW

Since the pandemic happens, everything switches to online. There’s online reviews for customer, app rating, class evaluation, feedback form for a web page, etc. Also, rosat and self-roast happen in real life.

Is there anything or anyone that you want to critique about recently? It could be things happening on you or any stories you heard from anywhere. I have a friend that spends way too much money on his girfriend, but the girl doesn’t buy him stuff. I feel kind of mad from a friend perspective, he doesn’t have to spend that much money to please his girfriend.

I went to a Thai restaurant this afternoon, the wating was way too long. I defintetly saw many empty seats inside but they still want me to wait, I’m not sure if it’s a culture thing though, but the experience of waiting was not pleasant.

People upstairs in my apartment are being unruly. Making a lot of noise and partying at late hours of the night which drives me crazy and couldn’t fall asleep.

I think I want to critique myself about procrastination. Again I didn’t finish what I have to do today. Always regret when I ‘m on the bed at night and do the same thing, procrastinating during the day.

In the Reddit “r/RoastMe” community, people talk about their stories and encourage others to roast them. Reddit “r/RoastMe” community

In this community which has a unique way to social, there’re many rules require people to follow, such as: The jokes can be pointed and even borderline cruel, but above all, they must be funny. We have a strong stance against a few things, like transphobic comments, racist comments, suicidal comments. They’re low-effort jokes that aren’t funny at all. There’s a clear line between humor and abuse. Any comment that crosses the line is removed by the moderators.

Interview findings:

Research Findings

On people: A lot of people think it’s not good to critique people. Some people roast others because they have different values and beliefs or just for fun. Self-critique is way to self-reflection, realizing things about selves could be the first step of changing. On things: People say their feelings on something they experienced and want to critique or give feedbacks.

According to the desk research and primary research, there are many kind of people involved, people in bussiness and art field, people that don’t have many platform to speak up, people that like to critique things in daily life and those who like to self roast. I try to sum up four types of people that related to the topic as persona, they are elders, artists, foreigners, and professionals.

Samson Young’s work Muted Situations #22: Muted Tchaikovsky’s 5th (2018)

Event

The color choices are based on the considerations of overall style of the platform. “Critique!” is a platform that everyone can have their voices heard. It’s a social innovation project that require people in this platform can only post critiques on things. The bright red color represents the furious critique battles, the greyish black and the white represents the rational rules and principles.

Is art talent or hard work? This is a question that I get really passionate and riled up about. In schools parents use the art as talent justification to argue their kids deserve higher grades if they “try” at the course, even if they have no skill. Art has elements of SKILL, just like learning to write an essay has techniques, or playing football has techniques. If you never learn those basic skills and steps, then of course you will have limited skill! But, if your education incorporates those techniques and skills, you will become more skillful. Logo Description The web design overall is simple, clear, and direct so that to help users find what they want as quick as they can. The highlights are in red to lead users understand the interaction or emphasize the main point of the platform. The two columns design that seperates the main feed and other small features is considered users’ interaction habits and left-right reading order. The use of card-based design enhances the user experience, and makes the web page scannable. This platform relies on the heavy content that made by users, catogorizing and organiazing information is important, and the card-base design lets users decide what they want to read further too.

C

The logo for this platform, Critique! is made of the theme colors. The design could be break up into couple elements, exclamation mark, a small person, a mouth. “C” is short for “Critique”, and it also could be seen as a mouth which reflects the main element of the platform, talk, everyone could say their voice. If we see the logo upside down, it’s a small person with a big mouth as his head. The design of this logo is simple, but clearly presents the identity of this word-base social platform. I think the simplicity just like words, the most powerful words are short but profound, you can read them over and over again and still can feel the power in it.

Psycho should be seen at least three times by any discerning film-goer, the first time for the sheer terror of the experience, and on this occasion I fully agree with Hitchcock that only a congenital spoilsport would reveal the plot; the second time for the Following macabre comedy inherent in the conception of the film; and the third for all the hidden meanings and symbols lurking beneath the surface of the first American movie since “Touch of Evil” to stand in the same creative rank... read more lolarunrun you followed focus on the topics of Japanese culture recently post Japanese Cup Ramen through the Ages.

The combination of online social platforms and real-life interactions and workshops makes social life rich and meaningful. To talk about the same interests with others or gather people in a similar situation help them find groups that they feel belongings. At the same time, a healthy social system could improve society in general. More and more people could have their voice heard, and that may change a lot to people’s thinking and understanding of others and society.

One second Interactive media installation Speculative design Jun. 2020 Individual project

Brief: An interactive installation that focus on visualizing sound and time. A process of feeling time based on sound and vibration, making intangible things to tangible, thus, being aware of time in every second and finding peace from it.

INSPIRATION

Desk research

Through a small talk in art class about synesthesia, I found it very interesting since I’m not a synesthete. Synesthesia is about our five senses, I’m impressed by how we use our sense so often since then. After some research on synesthesia, I think the most interesting type of synesthesia is the Auditory visual synesthesia which is a sound stimulus can elicit visual experiences. In short means seeing sound.

Synesthesia

Sound artist Christine Sun Kim was born deaf and has made it her project to explore the physicality of sound. Her work focuses on combines multiple senses with auditory in which to feel the sound. She also uses elements from her personal information systems such as body languages.

95% to 98% of American college undergraduates and Tamil speakers in India selected the curvy shape as "bouba" and the jagged one as "kiki" The bouba-kiki effect was discovered by German psychologist Wolfgang Köhler almost a century ago. This example is an illustration of sound symbolism—that is, the idea that certain sounds have certain primal meanings.

Sound symbolism may be but one example of a more general Synesthetic Artist Timothy Layden

In the project “Closed Captions”, she provides captions for deaf people to feel the sound. She describes a piece of violin music as

kiki

Researchers think sounds have shapes, but there are so many different shapes.

Theory of time

thoughtco.com/doestimereallyexist

Time is certainly a very complex topic in physics, and there are people who believe that time does not actually exist. One common argument they use is that Albert Einstein proved that everything is relative, so time is irrelevant. In the bestselling book "The Secret," the authors write, "Time is just an illusion." Is this really true? Is time just a figment of our imagination?

“Mournful violin music that sounds like crying alone in an empty bar, in 1920s Paris, you’re wearing a very tiny but fashionable hat that you tip to the bartender as you order a fourth martin”

Among physicists, there is no real doubt that time does really, truly exist. It's a measurable, observable phenomenon. Einstein did not reject the existence of time. Instead, he rejected

the distinction between past, present, and future.

I start to think what’s the physical form of sound or if they are physically exists since sound is intangible. When it comes to the idea of intangible, I start to associate it with another intangible form which is Time. There’s always a question for myself, does time really exist? I can feel time is everywhere in this world but what does it look like? With the question of time and sound, I decide to explore them deeper, try to find tangible forms for both of them, and try to combine them to extend our feeling senses of things around us.

bouba

psychological process known as synesthesia, which involves a crossing of the senses.

synesthesia.com/blog/sound-synesthesia/

According to theoretical physicist Carlo Rovelli, time is an illusion: our naive perception of its flow doesn't correspond to physical reality. Indeed, as Rovelli argues in The Order of Time, much more is illusory, including Isaac Newton's picture of a universally ticking clock.

primary research

ideation

Focus Group

Base on the research, I want to start with experimenting sound and sound equipments. How to visulize sound, and what equipment?

What object do you think can represent one sceond?

From the scientific perspective, sound is a type of energy made by vibrations. When an object vibrates, it causes movement in surrounding air molecules. These molecules bump into the molecules close to them, causing them to vibrate as well.

Wind chime Leaf

A group of 5

Water drop

Candle

Bead Gun shot

Metronome

Sand in hourglass

Soccer ball 2 of 5 perople talk about the scenario moments that have the one second idea.

So, vibrations could be the connections of sound and visual.

00:01

What objects or sound can be used for the vibration? Timer

Coin

Camera

Dust

I decide to use the elements that explored at the focus group: Bead Wind chime

How do you think the relations between sound and time?

We feel time fly slow sometimes and fast other times from our perception, but when we hear one beat we know it’s one second, sound help us measure time.

Amplifier

Guitar string

The moment that a car accident happens

Clock is the most accessible object to indicate time, sound is another way to represent time.

Subwoofer

Light bulb

Reaching to the finish line at a running race

Every sceonds of a car racing

DIY bass shaker tactile transducer which is the equipment transduces vibration

Water drop In terms of physics, the frequency of sound is measured in hertz (Hz) which is one cycle per second. Sound could be permanent when it’s recorded, then time would be existing within the memory, yet, to be eternal.

Dust

Sand in hourglass

Experiments on different objects and sound is very important, it also helps with developing new ideas.

How would the interaction look like?

From the perspective of sound: Control of sound, such as the frequency, loudness, etc. The ways of controlling could be distance and pressure sensors.

From the perspective of time theory idea: the time flow can be seen or feel along with the sound and interaction.

The whole installation is look like an big sand clock, when all the sands flow to another side of glass means one minute. I’ll use the same idea to measure time, plus the sound from vibration of different objects.

design process Bass shaker DIY

1. Cut the cone out from the subwoofer 2. Make a piece of flat plastic as the base 3. Glue a long nail on the top

Mounting the bass shaker to a woodboard, setting up the distance sensor, placing tacks on the top of the woodboard. Unfortunetly, I can barely see the objects are jumping or reacting to the sound, but the long nail is transimiting vibrations for sure.

4. Drill a hole at a piece of acrylic plate that can go through the long nail 5. Add a hex nut on the top of the acrylic plate to make it stable 6. Drill other holes to mount the subwoofer to on the woodboard

Circuits & code

So I try to use some other lighter materials, such as salt, sesame, and also try to add paints to it so that it could be better show the small movements.

Sending data from the IR sensor and the Knob sensor connected with arduino to maxmsp/jitter to control over sounds with hands interaction.

It turns out not too much vibrations going through the board, and still barely can see the movement.

The coding and circus work fine, and the different element of sound source triggers more ways to interact. Such as the keyboard, microphone, oscillators, etc.

research & experiment Through the first try on sound visualizing, I realize that the woodboard that connects to the bass shaker actually absorb a lot of sound. Apparently, wood material is not an ideal medium to be used in this project, so I try to do some research again.

I finally found that thin plastic material would do a better job here so I decide to give it a try. And also keep experiment on other elements and testing sound.

Sound is an alteration in pressure, stress, particle

displacement, and particle velocity, which is propagated, in an elastic material, or the superposition of such propagated alterations. The term vibration generally has an implication that all the particles in a finite region are moving in phase.

It means the thin and elastic material will be easy for sound to be propagated.

On the top of the plastic material, I decide to use sand which is nice and light, easily visualize vibrations.

Research on sound

I also found the information about CYMATICS. According to “A Study of Wave Phenomena and Vibration by Hans Jenny”, Cymatics is a subset of modal vibrational phenomena.

Except ambient sound and voice, other sound source is strictly 1 second. And also the low frequency sound can make more vibrations.

Gun shot

Heartbeat

One way to observe acoustics phenomena is by studying standing waves in a solid medium known as a Chladni plate which is a special technique creates patterns on the plate that reveal sound's physical nature. And it can create the unique patterns on musical notes.

FINAL

Vimeo: https://vimeo.com/645929790

Paticipents get a cup of sand at the begining, and they can pour them on the top of the plate and interact with the installation until all the sands are gone. The limited sand means limited time but paticipents could control the speed and frequency of sound in which to control the amount of sand shakes out. Sound sources in this project are all represent seconds. I invited participants to interact with this sound installation, people said they do found peace while interacting, seeing the smooth movement, and also hear the time passing by. It’s a good way of meditation, go in a daze, and tend to not feeling anxious about our limited life time, but just being calm, nourished and healed.

Online Collaborative studio Interaction design UI/UX design Mar. 2021 Individual Project

Brief: A new collaborative studio module in Canvas, which is designed to provide a better learning experience for online studio courses.

Background During the pandemic, a lot things have been affected, there’s no person on the street, everybody is at home. People have to do all kinds of things Online, shop Online, work Online social Online. As a student, I have to study remotely, using zoom, canvas, Google, and many other Online tools to do my work.

All you need to study is a computer and Wifi.

However, not every class is perfect for Online study, such as studio classes. Since studios require many different facilities and a variety of practical experiences, Online learning can’t give students the same experience as in a real studio.

Plus, collabration in a real studio is a very important asset. In real studios, students give others suggestions, make discussions, critique, working together, support each other. These have been weakend in online studio classes, which makes cooperation less meaningful. Especially the instant reactions in real studios has been weakend as well. Actually, many Online collaboration platforms have been used a lot during pandemic, such as Google, Figma, Miro, Zoom, etc. However, the particularity of studio classes are not very suitable for the already existed platforms.

Initial Insight During the pandemic, Online study for art students is a big challenge. Since the less of collaboration, instant reactions, hands-on experience and more art students can do in offline studios, they tend to learn less skills and the experiences accessing different materials. So, how can we help art students learn, cooperate, and experience Online just as they do in a real studio? Learning management system Online learning tool For students and educators Less collaboration features

Collaboration, communication, data storage Based on desktop software For business, enterprise, education

Online meeting, video conference Collaboration features include content sharing, whiteboard, etc For education, finance, government, healthcare and more

Real-time file editing Web-based collaboration Cloud storage For business, education

These are the platforms are the most widespread, and the most used by students during the pandemic. Office 365, and Google suite are the platforms mainly used for business, and they all have a series of softwares that are well developed. Zoom is mainly for Online meetings and it also works beyond education. Canvas is the only software widespread among students, and it’s only for students. Not as other platforms have many collaboration features, Canvas is less powerful on this part.

These are the photos I took during the pandemic, I had to work on things myself, and just to critique during the class time or submit the final work Online. I liked the quite and calm part of working on things myself, but it’s challenging when I had to ask for opinions or need to access to the facilities I don’t have.

Therefore, I decided to research more on Canvas and try to find some opportunities to help enhance the features of collaboration and explore how it can help only for art students, for studio classes. Canvas is also a platform that’s widely used before the pandemic, and it’ll be using after the pandemic. There’s no doubt that the pandemic helps the development of remote learning and working. The strengthening of online collaboration in Canvas will offer students a better experience no matter if it’s remote or in-person learning.

desk research According to the background analysis and initial insight, I decided to conduct a deeper study on Canvas, the platform I found most used by students and educators.

Customizable features and pages

Great notification and reminders for assignments

Other competitor such as Blackboard has real-time virtual meetups and more ways to help students stay connected

Threats

Integration with many third-party platforms and resources

Great class and assignments management and organization

The emerging new technologies to assist learning online such as interactive online textbook, VR, etc.

The UI design is very intuitive and easy to use.

Customizable features offer convenient conditions and study atmosphere for Online learning

No need too much effort to access and use Canvas Try to include the new technologies into Online learning

Google Classroom has more features that students and take class and do assignments at one platform, plus the supporting of other Google products.

Includes more features for students to do their work in Canvas rather than just submit it

User experience in certain integrations with third-party tools could be more native

Easy to install and free use all the time

Provide more native way to storage and archive materials and files

Less powerful on file and material storage and organize

Widespread among students and educators around the world

Collaboration and communication internally, and in real time

The customizable features let teachers and students create unique ways to navigate, collaborate to meet the different needs

Provide more ways to react or talk to others online instantly

Opportunities

Increase the usage of the 1GB storage space

Findings: No real time communication and collaboration features

Not very accessible to archive message, file, course

Couldn’t internally contact with other people in the class

Canvas have abilities to contribute discussions in page, but not meaningful for social and stay connected with others. It needs better file, message, material storage, organize and archive to increase the usage of the 1GB storage Real time reactions for Online collaboration and communication within Canvas.

primary research Interview

Field Observation

How do you like using Canvas as onling learning tool? In my major, we have a lot of readings and pdf files. I read them in Canvas, but it’s not easy to manage and save them.

I like Canvas has some third-party platforms integration, but they are quite hard to use. I rather to use those platforms separately.

2

Canvas is very convient for checking grade, assignments, due dates. I like to contact teachers and classmates within Canvas for discussing group assignments.

We started to do critique online through sharescreen. I had to photoshop a scene to present my work in the way I wanted such as in a gallery.

For the lecture part in a studio class, teachers often use projections to present things, PowerPoint, famous art work, and sometimes movies.

I do my work ousite of Canvas, because there’s only text entry or I have to upload other files, and they even don’t take files that’s too big, just too much work.

How do you like taking studio class online? I think the most challenge thing for taking online studio class is the lack of inspiration. There’s others’ work on the wall or so much small things that may rise inspirations when in real studio.

One big table is the essential for a studio class. Students sit around the table discuss and share their thoughts.

I started to take my major classes not long ago, switching online gives me no chances to access all the facilities which I think the most important part in my major. It has a lot of restrictions to take studio class online, such as there’s no studio atmosphere, and that is very important for creators.

A white wall is a typical space for art students to critique. Students can just simple put work on the wall by using pins, or they could set up insllations, or more ways to show the work.

Sometimes teachers set installations, or invite people for modelling, etc in the front of the classroom for students to imitate, take photos, or more hands on experiments. All kinds of materials that students might need for use, experiment, or inspiration, such as painting boards, papers, films, etc.

Lounge that have books, files for inspirations and study. Students can social or talk about their ideas while look through interesting stuff here.

There’s also places for students to loan equipments such as cameras, lens, lightings, tablets, etc

design strategy Based on the desk research of Canvas and the primary research of Online learning for studio classes, I’m trying to summarize everything and develop a design direction.

Web design According to the pain point and the design strategy plan, I try to develop high fidelity wireframes. The design style, color, font is based on Canvas. A derivative Logo only for the Studio section, colors are selected from the color wheel which represent the studio and collaboration idea.

Critique mode is the most impoartant feature

Click to interact or place users contents.

in Studio, it has many 3d templates and scenes for people to use as part of the critique process.

Landing page which

has a whiteboard and some features on the right.

3d scenes include mockups of art gallery, book, monitor, mural, and more. It allow users to experience the real feeling while designing their artworks with all the materials, spaces in hand.

The whiteboard allow users to draw, erase, eyedropper, type, highlight, create shapes, lasso objects, upload image, use background guides, resize, clear, add collaborators, export, full screen.

Lounge page, users

can add discusstion about class materials or anything they want.

Inspiration section which could be a library, artwork sharing, URL link, and more.

Element section in the Critique Mode which has many 3d facilities and all kinds of materials that supports critique or ideation.

Collaboration feature with the whole class, individual and group.

File page, allow users to easily store and organize files with a drag&drop feature.

Toolbar to help better interacting with 3d mockups such as zoom in and out ,ruler, floorplan, full screen.

Information flows from the web to the mobile app

Same function but different aim, webpage provide users with all the detailed features, mobile app serves quick notes on the go.

Record linkage from web to the mobile app Users can access to the same information and history record from both platforms.

Aim to read, comment, browsing, take quick notes Aim to access to the templates, 3d scenes, collaborate and critique in a deeper meaning
