INTRODUCTION

Following the success of last year’s inaugural event, the City Fringe Partnership is delighted to introduce Coutts London Jewellery Week 2009. From 8 - 14 June, London will sparkle with the capital’s jewellery talent. From cuttingedge contemporary to the finest classical jewellery, the secrets of this fabled industry are waiting to be uncovered.

Coutts London Jewellery Week 2009 is a unique opportunity to celebrate the world of jewellery and has been brought together by City Fringe Partnership, with funding from the London Development Agency, as part of its commitment to develop the creative industries. Independent industry group London Jewellery First and the Coutts London Jewellery Week ambassadors have been a vital support to the event. This year Coutts London Jewellery Week will again unite some of the biggest names in the industry with the best emerging talent, offering a spectacular opportunity to discover London’s hidden gems. Find out more about the capital’s unique connection with the jewellery trade (dating back over a thousand years), join the world’s foremost jewellery institution, The Goldsmiths’ Company, for their Day of Knowledge or visit a jewellery-making class to create your own piece. Exhibitions include Treasure, with some of London’s hottest new contemporary designers (see page 17), and Creation II, an event highlighting the work of 12 of the country’s most distinguished contemporary jewellers (see page 16).

Elsewhere, Hatton Garden - London’s historic jewellery quarter – will see many workshops opening their doors to the public for the very first time, offering visitors a unique insight into the world of the jewellery-maker. Saturday 13 June will see the street transformed into a festival of food, music and, of course, jewellery (see page 11). For those attracted to the capital’s historical roots, why not follow the Coutts London Jewellery Week Museum Trail, where you can compare marvellous collections like the Cheapside Hoard with erstwhile favourites the Crown Jewels (see page 22-23). Jewellery designers, craftspeople and industry institutions have come together to put on over 100 events spanning the capital between 8 - 14 June so there is sure to be something to suit everyone’s taste – from jewellery aficionados to schoolchildren and shoppers. Capital of creativity London’s vibrancy and creativity lures the crème de la crème of the world’s jewellery talent; it is a melting pot of culture and artistic talent – the perfect place for design to flourish. At Coutts London Jewellery Week visitors will see first-hand what makes London the capital of creativity. Extraordinary London

New creative talent has always been drawn to London – and jewellery is no exception. Top designer Stephen Webster first worked just along the Thames in Gravesend, and his designs now adorn music and movie stars. Today, the Cockpit Arts studios are home to fledgling designers making a name for themselves – Ruth Tomlinson, Rachel Galley and Ornella Iannuzzi to name but a few.

This is an experimental city; a place where people aren’t afraid to try new and original things. “London is such a diverse place architecturally and historically; the British sense of humour and eccentricities provide a perfect springboard for creative minds” says Managing Director of Boodles, Michael Wainwright.

There are over 100 jewellery graduates every year in London. Head to the Sir John Cass Department of Art, Media & Design (see page 15) or stop off at Central Saint Martins College degree show (see page 13).

Hatton Garden’s crowning glory HATTON GARDEN

On the fringe of the City of London, craftspeople have been making jewellery in Hatton Garden since the Middle Ages. Hatton Garden and Coutts London Jewellery Week Given its glittering history, it is no surprise that Hatton Garden is playing an integral role in Coutts London Jewellery Week. With the introduction of the Hatton Garden Festival (Thursday 11 to Saturday 13 June 2009), many workshops in the area will be open to the public, in some cases for the very first time, as part of the Hatton Garden Trail. Here visitors can discover a world of highly-skilled contemporary designer-makers and learn how to commission beautiful, hand-crafted pieces which range in price from £50 to £50,000. They can chart, step-by-step, the complex creation and manufacturing process and talk to the jewellers involved. The Festival will come to life with a street party on Saturday 13 June, with jewellery-making demonstrations in the street, children’s workshops, costumed actors, musicians, a fine food market, 18

and a host of jewellery themed walks, talks and workshops – fun for the whole family! Theatre students from the Central School of Speech and Drama will decorate the street adding to the fun-filled ambience on the day. Jewellery will be on display at Platform, the new exhibition space in Greville Street, and will run the full gamut of the industry’s illustrious history from The Cheapside Hoard – an astonishing collection of Elizabethan and Jacobean jewellery discovered by chance during the early 20th Century - to the latest contemporary designs from today’s hottest new talent. HATTON GARDEN SCANDAL Few areas of the capital can lay claim to such a colourful history. The jewellery district saw the murder of Sir Christopher Hatton’s daughter-in-law by her alleged lover in Bleeding Heart Yard in 1626 and one of the UK’s most audacious heists, when diamonds worth £1.5 million were stolen from the Hatton Garden Safety Deposit in 2003.

Hatton Garden and jewellery It was in the 19th century that Hatton Garden became renowned as the commercial centre for watch and jewellery manufacturing – industries that are synonymous with the area today. Its radical residents have courted controversy along the way, including Karl Marx (who wrote Das Kapital whilst he was there) and Hiram Maxim, who invented the machine gun from his studio on the corner of Hatton Garden and Clerkenwell Road. Hatton Garden’s cosmopolitan mix included a strong Jewish community, and the later influx of Italians prompted the nickname ‘Little Italy’. In recent years, Hatton Garden has undergone significant restoration and returned as a thriving commercial hub. Today there are around 500 jewellery businesses in the area, including over 80 contemporary designers and some of the country’s most skilled craftspeople and manufacturers.

These have been joined by other creative industries such as advertising agencies and top eateries, like the acclaimed French restaurant, the Bleeding Heart. As the area has diversified, the jewellery industry has responded with exciting developments of its own. Holts Academy of Jewellery, at the heart of Hatton Garden, offers training from industry experts on subjects such as gemmology and the latest in computer-aided design. It is set to unveil Platform, the brightest new exhibition space in the area, this June. HATTON GARDEN IN FICTION With such a unique history, it is unsurprising that over the years, the streets around Hatton Garden have been dramatised in literature and films. The area features in some of the novels of Clerkenwell resident Charles Dickens, most notably Little Dorrit and Oliver Twist, where it is home to Fagin’s gang. One hundred and fifty years later Guy Ritchie used it as the backdrop for his fictional scam in the blockbuster movie, Snatch. 19

Here are three good reasons to invest in jewellery this Coutts London Jewellery Week… Jewellery as fashion You can make a piece of jewellery the centrepiece of your outfit by treating your clothes as a blank canvas. Celebrity stylist and fashion expert Alex Longmore says: “Wear dark colours that show off the stones and make them sparkle. If you want to draw attention to your jewellery, avoid wearing fussy lines and embellished material as the design of the jewellery gets lost. Black and navy silk are perfect for showing off jewellery and are especially good for pearls”. If you want to find a piece that’s right on-trend during Coutts London Jewellery Week, look for the latest designs in cuffs. Alex has already seen what’s on the catwalks for the summer season: “The most fashionable piece of jewellery for June is the wrist cuff - especially in gold. This is a key piece that everyone should invest in. Think ‘gladiator’ encrusted with stones and wear with long floating ‘Boho’ summer dresses”.

Jewellery as art Throughout the ages, jewellery styles have mirrored big trends in art and design. You only have to walk around London’s V&A Museum to see opulent and radical Art Nouveau diamonds from Paris in the 1900s and Art Deco gems from the 1920s (see page 22). Jewellery can be used to adorn the body as a work of art in its own right. Hence ‘costume jewellery’, which, far from being a cheap imitation, takes its name from its theatrical roots. It’s an idea involving intellect and incredible craftsmanship that tells a story and becomes part of your own personal memory,” she adds.

Angela Burdett-Coutts, granddaughter of Thomas Coutts, possessed a necklace previously owned by Marie Antoinette which could be converted into a tiara. Angela wore it to Queen Victoria’s Powder Ball in 1845, where it was described as a ‘lustrous diadem’.
