Together Around Vättern

The water is what unites all of us who live and work around Lake Vättern. And we love our area. Did you know that the name Vättern means ‘water’, and that Sweden's second largest lake is also a giant drinking water reservoir?

In this year’s edition of the magazine, we focus a little more closely on all the good things to eat that are produced around Lake Vättern. The soils surrounding Vättern are some of the very finest in Sweden, and the lake exerts an influence on the climate that favours growth. By supporting our local trade, you as a guest can help our work on sustainability. This is an enjoyable way of getting to meet the people who made or grew the food, contributing to the local economy and giving you the chance to buy products that are unique to this location. Many people have perhaps heard about champagne and parmesan, but we have three products that have their own protected designations of origin in the same way: Rökt Vättersik (smoked whitefish), Wrångebäck cheese and Authentic Gränna Peppermint Rock.

Another way to share a place is to talk about it, and we love doing this. And not only to temporary visitors: to us, it is an important way of preserving and enhancing the history of the place. An entire spread is devoted to masses of tips on the entrepreneurs doing precisely this all around Lake Vättern.

We are also proud and delighted that global artist Jonna Lee was able to find a gap in her busy schedule, giving us the opportunity to talk to her about why Vättern is so special to her and how the area has inspired her music and creative endeavours. This summer, she will be putting on a number of concerts in Vadstena. Not to be missed!

For our historical flashback, we will look at a real Vättern character who for over 50 years lived alone on the islands of Fjuk outside Vadstena, Erik Zetterblad. Or the hermit of Fjuk, as he is also known.

We have also chosen to highlight 12 places in a little bit more detail, and the idea is that you can cut out the map and take it with you if you do not wish to carry the entire magazine around. Otherwise, there are many links to Around Vättern’s guide on the Naturkartan website and app, where we have gathered together some walks and themed trips if you are interested in something in particular. Miniguides for those travelling with children, playing golf, curious about local produce or wishing to hike or cycle around Lake Vättern. On our website, we have also put together some complete bookable packages – so just book and come along!

Thanks to all our colleagues, advertisers and partners who make this possible. Many of us have come together to achieve this and we hope readers and visitors appreciate our efforts. Welcome to Vättern!

Lake Vättern is a graben, a rift valley. To the east is Omberg, which is a horst, i.e. a raised elongated block of the earth's crust between two faults. Vättern has more than 30 different species of fish, including grayling, smelt, char, whitefish and Vättern salmon, which in fact is not a salmon at all, but a brown trout. Visitors can see Vättern fish in summer at Vättern Aquarium in Motala.

With a clear vision of constantly improving and developing, the Carneteg family has embraced the challenge to balancing modernization with preserving Starby’s unique charm. “We review our facilities and services to ensure we meet and exceed our guests’ expectations,” says Hilda. Their work has led to the spa section not only being significantly expanded, but also becoming a central part of Starby’s identity.

An oasis for conference and private guests

This ambition to constantly innovate and improve has also led to Starby now not only being a destination for conference guests but also a sanctuary for private visitors. “Our goal is to offer an experience that attracts both companies and individuals. We have seen an increase in private guests looking for a break from everyday life, and our extended spa is perfect for this,” explains Hilda.

Renovating and developing has been a big part of the family’s strategy for Starby. From being a hotel with limited spa facilities, Starby Spa, Hotel & Conference has grown to become one of the most sought after spa facilities in the region.

“The renovations have not only been about adding new features, but also about creating an environment where our guests can feel completely relaxed and have a place to gather,” says Hilda.

Exciting plans for the future

With Stefan Carneteg’s background in the hotel industry and Hilda’s focus on marketing and development, the family’s common driving force is clear. “Working together as a family gives us a unique strength. We share a passion for this company and are all focused on taking Starby to the next level,” adds Hilda.

The future looks bright for Starby Spa, Hotel & Conference. With plans for further expansion and improvements, including expanded conference facilities and more hotel rooms, the aim is to continue to grow and offer an even more exceptional experience for all guests. “We are excited about what the future holds. Every step we take is a step towards making Starby the ultimate destination,” concludes Hilda Carneteg with a look filled with optimism and anticipation.

Walking around Lake Vättern – the inner and outer journey

text and photos: ÅSE WÄNNERSTAM

In the summer of 2023, I completed a hike around Lake Vättern. A personal challenge as well as a test of whether it is actually possible. And it was. It worked. In every sense. A fabulous hike with marvellous nature experiences. The name Vättern, which also means water, would also focus our thinking on sustainability and future living conditions.

From concept to reality

After more than ten years of acting as a walking guide at Omberg, I became curious as to what a pilgrimage involved. What was the difference between that and a normal walk?

While training as a Pilgrim Leader at the Vadstena Pilgrim Centre, I met Ewa Lund. Throughout her adult life, Ewa had performed pilgrimages of various kinds, frequently on the route from Jönköping to Vadstena via the Franciskusleden and Klosterleden Trails. During the course, we began – mainly in jest – to talk about how cool it would be if you could walk all the way around Lake Vättern. Just over a year ago, we made it happen, planning and completing a pilgrimage around Lake Vättern. The hike was a challenge in a number of ways.

Are we really in Sweden?

On the 9th of June, our group started to hike from Jönköping, with Vadstena as the destination for the first week of the walk. We walked along the Vätterstranden beach and over the sandbanks, and several times uttered the words: Are we really in Sweden? The temperature was hovering around 30 degrees and Lake Vättern took on a turquoise hue, resembling an inland sea. Incredibly beautiful. We followed the Franciskusleden Trail, which forms part of St. Birgitta Ways. This trail provides stunning views over the high ground above Skärstad and Uppgränna, and closer to Omberg we walked very close to Vättern. There were a number of rocky beaches in the crystal-clear water. The trail is well marked, and completing the 100 km to Vadstena entitles you to a St. Birgitta Pilgrim Certificate. For the final bit from Omberg to Vadstena, we followed the Östgötaleden Trail across expansive fields. Personally, I found the third day to be a challenge as it was hard to regulate your moisture level in the heat. My muscles and feet began to protest, and my body wondered

Arriving at your destination after walking for several days is a powerful and unforgettable experience that pilgrims carry with them on their journey home and then onwards throughout their lives. Our pilgrim leaders provided us with some words to discuss and think about, and we then shared our findings. On some sections, we walked in silence, deep in our own thoughts. Whatever a person’s belief orientation, a pilgrimage is an inner journey. As well as an outer one.

The challenge of the second week

Following a rest day in Vadstena, we formed a new group that continued to Askersund. We would be following the Katarinaleden Trail, which is completely unmarked and is currently just a digital trail. It felt comforting to be in the company of pilgrim leaders who knew the route. On these days, it was becoming clearer that we were all getting into a certain rhythm and so we chose to walk in silence for much of the time, which was restful. The flat countryside was replaced by sizeable climbs on the approach to Övralid, Verner von Heidenstam’s home, and on towards Medevi Brunn. Wherever we spent the night, we received a warm welcome and enjoyed many wonderful encounters. The final part towards Hammar and Åmmeberg passed through rolling countryside on gravel roads and forest paths. As a walking guide from Omberg, I enjoyed being in the forest. Too much asphalt was tough on the body. From Åmmeberg, we left the Katarinaleden Trail that continues up towards Riseberga Abbey and followed the course of the Vätternrundan recreational bicycle ride until reaching Askersund. The weather remained on our side, and a hot, sunny midsummer awaited us as we embarked on some much-needed days of rest.

The biggest challenge

whether I was really intending to carry on with this. I was having these thoughts, too, with some three weeks still left. Then, after two weeks on the trail, something happened: my body got used to my pace and the distance, and I felt a longing to lace up my boots and set out on another day.

What is a pilgrimage?

Nowadays, there are many reasons to set out on a pilgrimage. Exciting landscapes, pure nature and good hiking trails. Meeting other people provides a powerful motivation, but so does the opportunity to meet yourself in your inner walk. Many people go on pilgrimages after a life-changing event. Perhaps after an illness, divorce or other life choice. A pilgrimage does something to you as a person. Whatever their beliefs and religious background, there are few people who do not undergo a mental change on this journey.

The third week began with a new group and, before the stage down to Hjo, we had the opportunity to do some reconnaissance. Here, we followed a variety of trails, starting with an unmarked cycle trail, Norra Vätterleden, before then following the Västra Vätterleden Trail. To make the daily stages reasonable, we also took a few detours in order to shorten the route. We began by walking close to Lake Vättern, the heat making a swim in the water an absolute necessity. We passed Olshammar and the crystal-clear turquoise water of the picturesque Röknasundet. We then continued into Tiveden’s magical countryside and, for the remaining days, Lake Vättern was out of view as we hiked over Forsvik, Mölltorp and then on down towards Hjo. On one occasion close to Karlsborg, we came across a uniformed military police officer, who began with a friendly:

‘It’s hot, isn’t it? What are you doing here? There’s some firing practice taking place nearby.’

We explained that we were on a pilgrimage around Lake Vättern and just intended to pass through, which we were allowed to do. Likely our quaint little group was no direct threat to national security.

The biggest challenge for me personally came during this weekly stage. The news of the death of a close rel-

ative of mine from drowning plunged me into a state of shock and sorrow, and a sense of unreality. Just to put some of the emotions that swept over me into words. After speaking with other relatives and the group I was walking with, I made the decision to continue in spite of all this. The best form of healing turned out to be literally taking things step by step, surrounded by warmth, fellowship and enchanting countryside. There would be time enough for practical matters and other forms of grief counselling. The inner journey as well as the outer one affected us all during those days. The importance of the water.

We near our destination

Walking southwards: is that not a bit like going downhill? It was beginning to feel that way when we arrived in Hjo, which on that day welcomed us with the Rock Against Cancer Festival from blaring loudspeakers. After a day of rest, we became another group as we took on the final stage down to our final destination, Jönköping. We followed the Hjo–Kungslena Pilgrim Trail as far as the Klämmesbo Mission Church, where we received the warmest welcome of the entire route. A pilgrim does not make great demands, but fine hospitality is something that everyone appreciates – and Berit certainly provided that. Duly fortified by this, we continued via the Västra Vätterleden Trail, which then turns into the Norra St. Sigfridsleden Trail. We were met by beautiful pine heathland and soft paths through the Hökensås recreational area. I really want to return to this place –what countryside! On the 8th of July, a month after we started, we entered a vibrant Jönköping, which was in full summer pomp. What a contrast with the silence of the pine forest! The Christina Church was our final destination, and here we were met by bell-ringing. It was a relieved, joyous and very tired group that rounded things off with a soft ice cream in the sunshine. Just think – we did it! Just think –I did it, all the way round Lake Vättern. An experience that I will never forget. Together, we took 4,515,387 steps for the Pilgrim’s Walk for Future and for the climate – 420 kilometres over 22 active days of hiking.

Do you have the urge to walk around Lake Vättern?

On Naturkartan we have described our daily stages, which amount to between 13 km and 25 km. Here you will also find a map showing most trails, or links where you can download digital map sheets. Take a look, too, at the Pilgrim Centre on the Vadstena page. They arrange several guided walks during the year.

What is the ‘Pilgrim’s Walk for Future’?

The Pilgrim’s Walk for Future is the largest people’s movement of its kind in the Nordic Region for climate justice, biodiversity and peace. One where everyone can take steps towards a more sustainable lifestyle by arranging a walk and adding steps to the step counter. We encourage individuals, communities, associations, companies, organisations and public sector bodies to take part by creating their own Pilgrim’s Walk for Future. Take a pilgrimage in nature with your friends or congregation. Or why not your own family? Whatever its size or length, a ‘Walk for Future’ is one way of starting out on your personal journey towards a more sustainable life.

The seven keywords of the pilgrim are represented on the bracelet, which contains one pearl for each word. Freedom, Simplicity, Silence, Worry-free, Slowness, Spirituality, Sharing. The whole of Lake Vättern in a bottle. The bottle of Lake Vättern water that we collected at each overnight stop and that came to symbolise the major significance of Lake Vättern. Presented at the morning service on 9 July.

the hermit of Fjuk

TEXT: åse wännerstam photo: åke svensson

On a sunny autumn day in September, I met up with Stefan Sahlén on the boat Albin 36, located in the moat at Vadstena Castle. It was a trawler, the old kind of American fishing boat that had been converted into a mahogany leisure craft. We laughed, commenting on how summer had returned and also welcoming Eva and Tommy aboard. Our destination was the islands of Fjuk.

As we make our way out through the harbour at Vadstena, we meet the pair of swans with their cygnets that, according to Stefan, have been terrorising the boat guests this summer. However, with our vessel encountering no opposition we are able to move out onto Lake Vättern. Off the Nässja Peninsula, we encounter some old ripples that are so typical of the lake. It can be like a millpond close to land before turning really choppy when waves several days old approach.

Fjuk

Actually, Fjuk consists of three islands: Jällen, Mellön and Skallen, situated in the middle of Lake Vättern between Motala and Karlsborg. The first lighthouse on Fjuk was built in 1852, when there was a permanent population of lighthouse keepers that lasted until the new automatic lighthouse was completed in 1910. At the same time, the houses that provided the lighthouse keepers’ accommodation were demolished and the timber sold to Vadstena, where it was used to build new houses, including Fjukahuset on Sjögatan. A total of 59 people have been registered on Fjuk, with a maximum of 17 people living there at the same time in 1887–88. There was even a school on the island, and the teacher’s name was Augusta Annlisa Lindgren. Nowadays, the Fjuk islands form

part of the Motala Bay nature reserve and are administered by the County Administrative Board. A number of seabirds nest during the period April–June, so landings should be avoided at this time.

There is a small jetty that can be used for anchoring. We scanned in vain among the waves for a glimpse of the wreck of the Byälven, which was deliberately grounded here in an attempt to save her. In calm weather, the wreck is an excellent place for snorkelling. Here, too, a picture of the place where Erik Zetterblad lived for just over 50 years begins to emerge.

Erik Zetterblad – The hermit of Fjuk Erik was a legend in his own lifetime. Many knew of him, but few got to know him. He was born in 1884 in the village of Gingri in Västergötland and was eleven years old when the family, including his ten siblings and older half-brother Olof, moved to Motala. His father became co-owner of a shop known as ‘Trepojkaboa’. Erik trained as an engineer in Norrköping and moved around Sweden for a few years. But there was something wrong. His own diagnosis was rheumatic headache, which – added to some heart problems – meant that, in the end, he was unable to

work. After both his parents and siblings had tried to support him for a while, his brother Olof purchased a rowing boat. Now Erik began to go fishing in Lake Vättern, where his trips became longer and longer.

He began to stay overnight in an old hide left over from the days when the lighthouse had been manned. In 1914, at the age of 30, he took up residence on the island for good. In the beginning, he kept a flat in Motala where he lived during the winter, but after a few years he bought Kjellstrand’s kiosk, a sweet shop that had been located in Varamon on Motala, transported it to Fjuk and attached it to the already existing hide. He lived here until his death in 1966. His little cottage was taken down in 1978 along with the cross-sawn Vättern gigs that, when stood up on edge, were used as a storage shed, woodpile and outhouse.

Life on the island

Four fishing enthusiasts stayed over on Fjuk from time to time. Nisse and Axel Wilhelmsson (the Pullman boys) built their own accommodation in 1917, where they stayed over occasionally. From 1923 to 1930, Mauritz Maijer lived with Erik and they were helped out with the fishing. What these four did not know about the fish life in the lake was not worth knowing. They could sniff out how the weather on Vättern would affect the following day’s fishing. The fish was sold in Vadstena, among other places, which they would row to and from in traditional Vättern gigs. Erik kept potato fields and otherwise lived a lot on canned and dry food, which could be stored for a long time. He picked nuts and medicinal herbs at Sandby Point, which he then sold to the pharmacy. For additional income, he also tended to the lighthouse and cleaned the windows on the building.

8 VISIT VÄTTERN

Several times, Erik had to rescue boats and save the crew where these had run aground or ended up in distress – including one occasion when the vessel the Kung Ring was wrecked off Erkerna in 1918. The Byälven ran aground in 1937, and the bow and bridge were left in the small harbour. Erik was not happy about this. He cared about animals and nature, and the wreck tainted the place. It was an eyesore, not a beautiful memorial.

I met the artist Hans Ström, who grew up and spent all his life next to Lake Vättern and Motala, and who met Erik a number of times. As a young boy, he was able to accompany his best friend Sören’s mother and father on trips out to the island. They made regular trips there, taking a box of groceries for Erik and sometimes bringing some laundry back which they would then return at their next visit. He found Erik to be a clean person, but it was very unclear as to whether or not he bathed. He remembers that the place was a bit shabby, with all the fishing gear and remains of boats. The little cottage was simple, with a bed and a table. There was a radio as well as a rather small window, a wood burner and a paraffin oil heater. He had a cold storage area in the cellar as well as some pits in other places.

‘I found Erik to be a bit of a philosopher. Not an oddball. His solitude was of his own choosing, and he loved the simple peaceful life without too many impressions. He would take us over to the other island; here, he knew which stones you could stand on to get across and keep your shoes dry. On this island, he’d planted exotic trees here, there and everywhere – right among all the 5,000 spruce and 3,000 pine trees that the forest administration authority had planted. I remember a mahogany tree, among others. I think he was experimenting with a bit of

everything, testing to find out what could actually grow there. He came up with a lot of clever solutions. I always found him to be friendly and humorous. But he was keen to avoid any curious visitors and would then suddenly disappear completely. Once he became angry at us boys when we were climbing around on the wreck (Byälven). It was no place to be playing,’ Hans rounds off by saying.

When I read what other people have written, Erik comes across as educated, well-spoken and with a broad range of interests. He wanted most of all to be left in peace and was a great animal lover. Animals became his natural company. This included two cats, which hunted voles on the island. ‘I like it here,’ he is said to have replied when asked how he coped with the solitude.

In the final years, he lived entirely on his own and all efforts to persuade him to move to Motala were in vain. ‘If I did, I’d die immediately,’ he is reputed to have said. At the end of November 1966, some recreational anglers found him dead in his cottage. He had lived on Fjuk for 52 years.

How to manage your inner self

We climbed ashore on Fjuk and began our journey of discovery. Our first destination was the lighthouse. I detached myself from the rest of the party a little in order to experience the feeling of the island for myself. The sun was shining, the gulls were screaming and small birds were chirping as they flew in and out of a gnarled, wind-battered pine tree. I sat down on one of the stony beaches, just listening to the silence. The more I read about Erik, the more fascinated I became. I saw him not so much as a hermit but rather someone who perhaps understood what

life was all about. Finding contentment in the simple things in life, living in harmony with nature, neither disturbing nor destroying. Living slowly. I had a picture of someone unable to handle the noise and pace of a rapidly changing society. And I see similarities with the noise and newsfeeds that we are constantly encountering in the present. My thoughts were abruptly interrupted by two JAS planes (the Kråk military training area runs between the island of Jungfrun and Fjuk) as they roared across the sky, providing an almost comical contrast with the peaceful silence that I had just experienced.

A not entirely wild guess would be that Erik would not have appreciated the rampaging planes.

From Hjo till Strandvägen 5A

– the journey of a super-entrepreneur

An entrepreneurial journey without parallel. Estrid Ericson became the design icon of the 20th century, creating an interior design mecca at Strandvägen 5 in Stockholm. The town of Hjo, dominated by wooden villas and a reminder of a lost age when the place was a much-visited spa resort, made its mark on Estrid, who grew up in the town. To visit it is to experience what created a firmly rooted self-belief and a desire to put Sweden on the interior design map. This year, Estrid’s creation – the company Firma Svenskt Tenn – celebrates its centenary.

‘I started Svenskt Tenn as something otherworldly and fairly impractical. Relying on the uncertain good taste of tomorrow.’ These are the words written by Estrid some years after starting Firma Svenskt Tenn.

Leaving a small place in Sweden and moving to the capital to lay the foundations for the active growth of a furnishing and design company that still exists today was not a matter of course. Not even in 1924, when Estrid left Hjo and, using a small inheritance from her father, founded what some years later was given the name Firma Svenskt Tenn. Two things will become clear when you visit Estrid’s town of Hjo and look at her childhood. At the start of the 20th century, the feature of the town was its spa resort, which was visited by the jetsetters of the time from the continent and the Swedish capital. This was what developed that inevitability that she would take on the world and create a position for herself in the field of design. In addition to this, she grew up as part of a large family, with her parents running two hotels in the town – a lifestyle that laid the foundation for the social skills that gradually allowed her to build up a network and create contacts with the innovative architects and artists of the day. These were factors that greatly contributed to Svenskt Tenn’s popularity and the attention it gained as an innovator in the field of interior design and furnishing.

In many contexts, Estrid’s strengths have been described as like those of a scenographer creating space and a thea-

tre experience in Svenskt Tenn’s premises. At times, she has been criticised for assembling ideas, shapes and content in a slightly dependent and uncritical manner. Others feel that she was highly independent and critical, and ready to blow away creative boundaries. But let us return to Estrid and her childhood in Hjo, a town that left its mark on her entire life.

Estrid Eriksson was born in Öregrund on 16 September 1894. Her parents ran a restaurant, but the couple were ambitious and moved to Hjo immediately following Estrid’s birth. Here, they had the opportunity to run and then gradually take over the Royal Hotel and its restaurant, Stadskällan, while at the same time renting the Bellevue spa hotel on the shores of Lake Vättern. There can be no doubt that her parents’ entrepreneurial vigour contributed to Estrid’s drive and courage. In Hjo, the family quickly expanded and Estrid grew up with five siblings. Family was immensely important to her, and every Christmas she returned to Hjo to spend the festive season there, where the Royal Hotel continued to act as a meeting place for the siblings long after their parents had passed away. Her sisters still lived in Hjo, continuing to run a hotel and restaurant until 1961. Estrid’s self-esteem and certainty, so evident in how she took on the capital and set up her entrepreneurial operation, has its foundations in her family. In preserved letters and photographs, it becomes clear that the family had strong ties with each other, as well as a strong position among the leading class in Hjo. Guests visiting both the Royal Hotel and the Bellevue spa hotel brought with them the sophisticated world of the continent and the Swedish capital.

From early on, Estrid knew that she wanted to devote herself to an artistic career. Interior design was a major interest – the challenge was how to take things further.

Although Hjo had a large place in her heart, her dream was to strike out into the world. After completing secondary school in Hjo, in 1914 she convinced her parents to allow her to continue her artistic studies at what was then the Technical School in Stockholm, now the University of Arts, Crafts and Design (Konstfack). Training as a drawing teacher was something that her parents could approve of. It felt reasonably safe and secure, even though Estrid’s artistic dreams and ambitions stretched well beyond a job of that kind. And thus a journey of success began for a super-entrepreneur, a journey that would take Estrid far beyond Hjo. Despite this, she was faithful to her hometown throughout her life and often returned there to meet and socialise with her siblings. Towards the end of her life, by which time many of her friends and her leading partner Josef Frank had passed away, Estrid’s fears for the future of Svenskt Tenn began to grow. A never-fading diligence and curiosity were her main driving forces. When her husband Sigfrid Ericson died in June 1973, her loneliness became even greater and it was then that her strength began to ebb.

Thoughts grew as to what would happen with her legacy, the assets left behind and all the intellectual property rights of the shop in the form of copyright. Despite it being the 1960s, with the young generation choosing other expressions of lifestyle and furniture than those that Svenskt Tenn stood for, the shop continued to fend off the challenges during this time. An important question for Estrid was to support research and training within a variety of artistic specialities. Her circle of acquaintances included Kjell and Märta Beijer, who started a foundation to support research in the fields of medicine, ecology and culture. Areas that were important to Estrid, too. She decided to sell Svenskt Tenn to the Beijers in 1975 and then started her own foundation that supported scientific research and training in the fields of design, arts and crafts, and industrial design.

Estrid continued as the CEO at Svenskt Tenn until 1978. By this time, she was 84 years old and felt the time had come for someone else to take over responsibility. She died on the 1st of December 1981 at the age of 87. In keeping with her wishes, Estrid and her husband were buried close to her parents’ grave in Hjo.

Immediately afterwards, in conjunction with the boom of the 1980s – after two political decades in the 1960s and 1970s that had seen a decline in Svenskt Tenn’s customer base – the company suddenly witnessed an upturn. Now, the young generation was discovering Svenskt Tenn’s design language. This was a reawakening of Estrid’s and Josef Frank’s legacy and, as Estrid herself put it: ‘Beauty has no age. It is timeless.’

Design Hjo 2024

One good way of gaining an understanding of Estrid’s life in Hjo is to begin by visiting Kulturkvarteret Pedagogien. Here you will find the exhibition about Estrid Ericson’s childhood in Hjo, with stories about her life to spark the interest, as well as a wide selection of old and new objects from Firma Svenskt Tenn.

In order to commemorate the centenary this year, the exhibition is being supplemented by five exhibitions at different times featuring five exciting young Swedish designers, under the banner title ‘Design Hjo 2024 – on contemporary design’.

local produce around Vättern

How can you, as a visitor, improve the place? A large part of this involves supporting local trade in the area. And, of course, this equally applies to people who live here. Around Vättern seeks to contribute to sustainable development, where ecological, social and economic perspectives go hand in hand. If those of us who live here are happy, then those of you who visit will notice. And we would love to share with you the things we experience every day in this fabulous location.

the unique products

Many people are familiar with Champagne, Parmesan and Serrano ham. But did you know that the Lake Vättern area boasts three of its own unique designations of origin*: Rökt Vättersik (smoked Lake Vättern whitefish) (PDO), Wrångebäcksost (cheese) (PDO) and Authentic Gränna peppermint rock (PGI).

Rökt Vättersik is a delicacy that requires a great deal of knowledge about Lake Vättern, the whitefish and how to smoke fish. It gained its designation as recently as April last year. Fishermen have been catching and smoking Lake Vättern whitefish for centuries. It is a traditional craft, with the knowledge of how to do it passed down for generations. Even today, there are fishermen who smoke the fish themselves. Of course, the wood must be alder.

Wrångebäcksosten is a classic Swedish hard cheese that was registered on the 8th of April 1889 and is thus Sweden’s oldest registered brand of cheese. What makes it unique is that it is made at Guldkroken at Almnäs Bruk, between Lake Vättern and Hökensås. The area consists of many different soil types, which provide a varied flora, while the climate is warmer compared to its surroundings. The cheese was served at the farewell dinner held in Gothenburg for the engineer Andrée and his colleagues before their departure for Svalbard in 1896 in their balloon ‘Örnen’ (‘The Eagle’).

Which takes us across Lake Vättern to Gränna. Here, as well as finding out about Andrée’s polar exhibition in the Grenna Museum, you can also enjoy the third unique product, Authentic Gränna peppermint rock. Just over 35 years before the balloon voyage, single mother Amalia Erikson was given permission to start a confectioner’s in Gränna. This allowed her to provide for herself and her daughter by making ‘fine pastries’ and the so-called ‘polkagrisar’ –peppermint rock candy sticks. Perhaps the best experience of the holiday will be getting involved and making them yourself? It is not as easy as it looks.

More information on local produce around Lake Vättern can be found on Naturkartan:

*) In the EU, there are three types of protected designations for food products, each with different associated requirements: As well as Protected Geographical Indication (PGI), there is also Protected Designation of Origin (PDO) and Traditional Speciality Guaranteed (TSG). 12 VISIT VÄTTERN

REKO – A people’s movement with a life of its own

The Swedish Housekeeping Society (Hushållningssällskapet) has seized on the idea of getting buyers and sellers to come together and shop locally. ‘REKO rings’ are now starting up throughout Sweden. Buyers and sellers usually contact each other through Facebook groups. Buyers find out through the group what products are available in the local REKO ring and how to order them. This is about local food mixed with trust, joy and commitment. REKO is an abbreviation of a Finnish term that means ‘fair consumption’, but it also conveys nice and enjoyable as a well as fair. REKO rings around Lake Vättern can be found in: Jönköping, Hästholmen, Vadstena, Motala, Karlsborg, Tibro, Hjo, Tidaholm, Mullsjö and Habo.

Find out more about REKO at

Four places you should not miss!

Tiveds Lanthandel & Krog: Restaurant, delicatessen and smokehouse in the centre of Tiveden!

Tiveds Lanthandel & Krog can be found in the village of Sannerud, right next to Lake Unden and at the foot of the Tiveden National Park. It is run by the couple Jocke and Mia Cleryd. The food is what persuades people to travel many miles to visit the little restaurant. Last year, they won Shop Restaurant of the Year, beating hard competition, and this year they are expanding their operation in the centre of Karlsborg, too.

This is how Jocke and Mia themselves describe Tiveds Lanthandel & Krog: ‘Our raw ingredients follow the seasons. We know our craft and are playful in the kitchen. Our wine list is long enough and all of our wines have been selected by our sommeliers, who will be happy to talk about their favourites. Of course, we offer carefully considered alcohol-free alternatives. Our delicatessen counter is large and would not look out of place in the fine market halls of the big cities. The smokehouse is located in the back garden and supplies alder-smoked pork belly and ham in the same way as has been done in Tiveden since time immemorial.’ tivedslanthandel.se

Krogen som inte finns (the inn that doesn't exist) is run by the restaurateur couple Davide Lindqvist and Sandra Walther at Folketorp, Närkesberg outside Askersund. Davide ran several inns in Örebro but built a house within the barn on the farm at home – mainly as a fun thing for themselves, where the intention was to open from time to time. However, such is the demand that it is usually more often than that. The wine list consists of wines from Hungary, which is a fabulous wine-growing country. Otherwise, they use local raw ingredients, and the food is created according to their desires, with the freedom to make exactly what they want to. Good, high-class food at reasonable prices. Guests who have been there have said that it feels like being in an inn that does not exist. The restaurant has become extremely popular and was nominated for the Stora Turismpriset award in 2021, and they are involved in organising the Örebro County Journey of Food, an event that in turn was nominated for the Stora Turismpriset in 2023. krogensomintefinns.se

The warm hospitality and ability to make everyone feel welcome really are a constant feature.

At Ladugården, you will also find Vadstena’s local coffeeroastery run by the Isaksson family – the finest coffee on the plain, a large deli counter with cheeses from all corners of the world, and their own cheese hotel, where cheeses are stored under the right conditions for the perfect taste. There is also a large indoor design shop. A destination on the Östgöta plain where you can be yourself for a while. www.ladugard206.se

Hermelin’s ready lawns & farm shop

In 2024, Magdalena Hermelin in Skänninge received the Stora Hagdahlspriset award. She is an inspiring entrepreneur who for ten years has been growing KRAV sustainability-certified vegetables on Fallsberg Farm outside Skänninge, where her husband also grows lawns. However, she has also become well known as a spokesperson for locally grown food, usually by providing critiques of pinpoint accuracy and by inspiring change. The rationale behind the award reads as follows: ‘For commitment and for taking a clear stand for Swedish food, anchored in a sustainable, self-run operation on the Östgöta plain.’ The vegetables from Hermelin’s farm shop are sold directly to shops in Östergötland and Stockholm withoutintermediaries, as well as via the farm shop. In the harvest period, customers are offered the opportunity to harvest vegetables and flowers for themselves. As well as having access to quality vegetables, guests can also experience and learn whatvegetables look like ‘at root level’. www.hermelins.se/gardsbutik

pick-your-own season!

Picking your own berries

– a fast-growing retro trend

Summer means harvest time, an intense period for anyone interested in fruit syrup and jam making, and for collecting all that nature has to offer during the season. Interest in picking your own produce is on a constant rise, with everything from berries to vegetables and flowers. One rising star in berry growing and pick-your-own is the fly honeysuckle berry. Fly honeysuckle is a so-called ‘super berry’ and its properties can be compared with, for example, blackcurrants and sea buckthorn. Fly honeysuckle has a long history of use in traditional medicine in Canada, Russia and Japan. It is also called ‘the berry of youth’ and is full of vitamins and antioxidants. The taste is like a mixture of blueberries, raspberries and redcurrants.

A magical berry in a magical place

On the slopes leading down to Lake Vättern at Säby Södergård in the parish of Örberga, beautifully located between the slopes of Omberg and Vadstena, lies one of southern Sweden’s most important plantations of fly honeysuckle.

Säbyvikens Bärodling was created by sisters Annie and Sara Ingemansson. The farm was their grandmother’s childhood home and has been in the family for several generations. Cultivation has long taken place on the eastern shore of Lake Vättern. The neighbourhood is known for its fertile soils, and today there is a wide range of berry and vegetable cultivation in the area. Many plantations offer pick-your-own and most are organic. The Ingemansson sisters have many fine summer memories from here, of lazy summer says and swimming in Lake Vättern’s fresh water.

‘We wanted to manage our grandmother’s legacy and develop the place. This is our own little place on Earth. We felt strongly that we wanted to keep the farm alive,’ says Sara.

Daring investment led to popular pickyour-own business

After many thoughts and ideas about options for developing the farm, the choice was made to cultivate fly honeysuckle. The location next to Vättern is ideal for growing as the lake acts like an inland sea, thus extending the growing season. ‘I was working in the horticultural industry and was at a lecture on fly honeysuckle – “the berry of the future” – and so that was the way we went,’ explains Sara.

They read up about the berry and felt that it seemed exciting. Without tasting the berry or knowing in advance how things would turn out with the cultivation, they decided to buy 900 bushes. In spring 2020, they planted five different types in order to increase the spread in terms of both taste and harvesting period. The plantation now offers a long season, with the first berries ripening around midsummer and the last at the end of August. The plantation is entirely organic. The sisters are convinced that organic cultivation is good for biodiversity, for the soil, and for our health. The summer of 2023 was the first pick-yourown season and was somewhat of a success. Many visitors travelled from far and wide to the beautiful plantations, with their views over the eastern shore of Lake Vättern.

‘It’s an easy berry to pick. The idea is for the bushes to reach a height of one and a half metres, which makes picking easier still,’ explains Sara.

An area worth discovering

Close to the plantation, there are endless opportunities for excursions and making discoveries. Just a stone’s throw away there are fine swimming areas and cafés. The area offers magical, beautiful countryside that invites you for walks at Omberg, or along the shore of Lake Vättern. Those interested in history will find that the area offers a real banquet, with ancient remains, an abbey history and, not least, the town of Vadstena with its stunning cultural-historical environments just a few kilometres away.

For 10 years, Aktion Rädda Vättern has fought for Lake Vättern to have clean drinking water.

The protests include the defense’s shootings over Lake Vättern and a new mine at Gränna. It’s also leaking toxic PFAS chemicals from Karlsborg Airport to the waters of Lake Vättern. These chemicals are not broken down, are water soluble and especially dangerous for young children. They affect the immune system, are carcinogenic, etc.

In all instances, we have protested and appealed. Now the decision lies with the government.

The airport MUST be cleaned up.

welcome to MOTALA

– The Lake City of East Sweden!

Motala is also the capital of the Göta Canal – a title of which we are enormously proud. Here you will find the Göta Canal’s main office, magnificently located in the harbour, while the section of canal from there to the locks at Borenshult is a really pretty one. Here the canal passes close to fantastic buildings and historic houses, including the old Motala Workshop area, where the atmosphere of a bygone age still lingers in the air.

Motala Workshop is the cradle of Swedish industrial engineering and began in 1822 as a repair workshop for the canal construction. Here there is also the beautiful, renovated Lokverkstan, which has enjoyed success in recent years as a concert venue, where major Swedish artists have appeared as guests.

On the other side of Lake Boren, the canal then continues from Borensberg harbour to the locks at Berg. Make sure to visit Borensberg, the little seaside town by the Göta Canal.

In Motala, we like swimming – all year round! Here there are 170 lakes and ten municipal swimming areas. The jewel in the crown is Varamobaden, a beach several

kilometres long that is the largest freshwater swimming area in the Nordic Region. Thanks to the sheltered bay, Lake Vättern’s clean, clear water and the shallow sandy beach, Varamobaden is not only child-friendly but also a mecca for water sports such as windsurfing, kitesurfing and standup paddleboarding.

Motala Harbour is a real meeting place during the high season. Here, canal boat enthusiasts, visitors and residents of Motala meet, and there are a number of restaurants with magnificent views over Lake Vättern. The Motala Motor Museum is also located in the harbour area. With its collection spread over 2,400 square metres, it is Sweden’s

most visited motor museum and fabulously nostalgic. For anyone with the urge to take a boat trip, there is the option to travel on M/S Kung Sverker. The trip will take you either on the Göta Canal to Borensberg or out onto Lake Vättern. However, you do not need to be either on or in the water to discover Motala’s varied nature. Several sections of Östgötaleden – a 1,500 km hiking trail through Östgötland – can be found here. Getting around on two wheels is easy, too, in the cycling town of Motala, with many rides in the countryside offering the opportunity to discover new places. Discover the Rosenlund manor and rose garden

– a gem on the shore of Lake Vättern!

With an unbeatable view over Lake Vättern, Rosenlund manor and rose garden crown an area of floral splendour and historic charm. This gem of a parkland is home to an award-winning rose garden, the Posse’s Park manor park and Rosenlund manor, one of Jönköping’s oldest buildings.

The area lies just a stone’s throw from the shores of Vättern and is a peaceful retreat within walking distance of the centre of Jönköping. As a visitor, you can take part in guided tours or simply stroll around and enjoy the beautiful nature, or perhaps have a coffee and home-baked cakes among sweet-smelling flowers at Café Stallgården. Art exhibitions, cultural events and festivities are arranged in the area during the year around the Day of the Rose and the Christmas market. In summertime, when the place is at its finest, concerts and a range of other activities are arranged in the area.

The Rosenlund Rose Garden

In 2022, the rose garden was given the international ‘Award of Garden Excellence’, given by the World Federation of Rose Societies. Rosenlund is now considered one of the world’s most highly prized rose gardens for a visit.

The rose garden was created in 1978 by the then town gardener Bertil Wrangsjö and has since been developed, principally by landscape architect Björn Kalin. Today, the rose garden is Jönköping’s flowering jewel, with 550 different varieties of roses from a number of different rose groups. There is also a local clone archive at the rose garden for roses of interest from a horticultural history perspective. Each year sees the celebration of the Day of the Rose, with rose walks, lectures, music, etc. The park area also contains beautiful ornamental trees, peonies, perennials and much more to see and experience.

Rosenlund Manor

At the end of the 18th century, the area around Rosenlund was called ‘Höga gärde’ (‘high field’) and consisted of meadows and pastureland. On Sundays, residents would walk here when they wanted to get out into the countryside. The area was a perfect place of retreat for those wishing to take a break from urban life. The area was eminently suitable for agriculture, and Baron Gustav Mauritz Posse av Säby, who had an interest in agriculture, had a model farm built on his property. He placed the manor house on a slope with a beautifully rural location close to Lake Vättern. Rosenlund was ready in 1788. Today, the manor is owned by the municipality of Jönköping and underwent extensive renovation in 2016, when it was decided to recreate the Gustavian manor that had been built in the 18th century. The manor house today is used as an internal conference facility within Jönköping municipality, a place for civil marriage ceremonies, cultural events, guided tours and art exhibitions. A traditional Christmas market is held in the area over the weekend of the first day of Advent. The Christmas market at Rosenlund Manor and Rose Garden provides the perfect occasion for getting into the Christmas mood.

Posse’s Park – the hidden garden

West of the manor house, and with a unique view over Lake Vättern, lies Posse’s Park. The park was renovated by Jönköping municipality in 2018, using a free interpretation of how it might have looked when laid out at the end of the 18th century. Historically, the park has been rebuilt a number of times and is also known as ‘The Hidden Garden’, as traces were found of three different gardens under a thick layer of topsoil. It is intermediate in style as there was a transition from the restrained parkland to the freer English style. As early as 2010, mapping of the area was performed using georadar. An archaeological excavation also took place and the results showed extensive remnants of a Gustavian park right beneath the surface. The green areas of the park invite people to gather together in a spirit of conviviality – perhaps to play lawn games, have a picnic or enjoy lazy days in the sunshine.

guided tours

Entry to the area is free of charge all year round and visitors can stroll around of their own accord and enjoy the stunning environment and the changing seasons. Those wanting to find out about the area’s exciting history can book a tour with one of our manor house guides. Guided tours are available to the general public every Sunday between May and September, as well as every day in July. Guided tours for groups can be booked all year round.

Café Stallgården opens in spring 2024

In the recently renovated Café Stallgården, you can enjoy a coffee and home-baked cakes, ice cream, strawberry tart and sandwiches surrounded by fragrant roses right in the heart of the rose garden. The beautiful stone building is called Stallbyggnaden (The Stables) and was built at the start of the 20th century to provide stabling to the agricultural horses at Rosenlund Manor. Café Stallgården is open Sat & Sun from 10 am–5 pm from May–Sept and every day from 10 am during weeks 26–33.

VADSTENA

– Where History and Modernity Unite

Words cannot convey the aura of history that pervades throughout Vadstena. Though nebulous it is almost tangible. It has to be experienced. Abundant evidence of this takes the form of the many remarkably well-preserved medieval buildings in which one can almost step back in time. Not least among Vadstena’s other attractions is its immediate proximity to Lake Vattern which affords beaches and aquatic activities. A key factor in maintaining not only an atmosphere of peace and tranquillity, but also generating the energy and movement in Vadstena, is the pride and sense of custodianship that the residents have in the place that creates it. A place that for centuries people have turned to for recreation and inspiration. Vadstena has always been a place to marvel at, visit, return to, enjoy and stay in.

Discover our top recommendations – Your warm welcome awaits!

The

history BUFF

Vadstena invites history enthusiasts on an enchanting journey through time and space. The city centre feels like it has been plucked from a medieval tale, with picturesque alleys and squares adorned by historic buildings from bygone eras. As early as 1400, Vadstena was granted its city rights, and right in the heart of town stands the whitewashed Town Hall in the square, Rådhustorget, that bears its name. Many of the city's skilled guides lead walking tours from here. You'll also find Vadstena City Museum, where you'll encounter Vadstena's historical residents and get a sense of everyday life in the city. The monastery area, built according to the visions of Saint Bridget, and the majestic Vadstena Castle can be experienced year-round, either independently or with a guide, leaving no visitor untouched. In the castle park, children have their own castle where only their imagination sets the limits. Just outside the city lies Aska, where significant findings suggest it was a royal power centre even during the Viking Age. In Vadstena, the charm of the past meets the vibrancy of today in a harmonious manner. Events and concerts, unique shops, restaurants, and cafes bring Vadstena to life all year round.

Event calendar: Welcome to Sweden’s best-preserved renaissance castle. Arknat – an accessible windbreak at Svälinge.

The nature lover

The city is surrounded by magical nature, with Lake Vättern on one side and the plain on the other. Lake Vättern invites a multitude of activities such as paddling, boat trips, swimming, and fishing. In August, the area around the castle fills with crayfishing and laughter. The golden plains, from rapeseed to ripe grain, offer a visual feast, and farm shops are plentiful. A trip to the mythical mountain Omberg offers breathtaking views, cozy rest stops, and spiritual experiences. In winter, the ski slope Ombergsliden is open to the delight of both young and old. At the northern foot of the mountain lies Borghamn. Here, limestone was quarried, used in the construction of the Göta Canal, Karlsborg Fortress, and the National Museum, among others. Borghamn is an excellent starting point for your visit to Omberg, offering accommodations, shops, and restaurants. Lake Tåkern attracts bird enthusiasts from around the world, and a visit to Naturum is a delight. Here, children can play in Naturleken and explore our unique nature along Princess Estelle's Fairytale Path. Another tip is to rent a bike and take a trip to the exciting accessibility adapted ARKNAT windshelter at Svälinge to spot the cranes, which gather here during spring and autumn.

The pilgrim

Vadstena has been attracting pilgrims and visitors for centuries. Many follows in the footsteps of Saint Bridget along the St. Birgitta Ways. Through deep forests, over mountains, and across open plains, the pilgrimage routes wind their way to this historical gem. Along the way, there's a string of medieval churches, cozy eateries, and farm shops not to be missed. Upon reaching the destination, many head to the Pilgrims Center to share their experiences with others or grab a bite to eat. When the snow melts and the spring sun shines, visitors flock to the Monastery Garden to admire the unique beauty of the Spring Snowflake. In May, the old orchard blooms in full, and in the herb garden, you can explore the classic medicinal plants cultivated by the sisters and brothers during the monastery's heyday. In Vadstena Monastery Church, also known as the Blue Church, you can partake in rich prayer life, enjoy beautiful music, or admire its beauty. The Sancta Birgitta Monastery Museum, located in the Folkunga Palace, offers a wide variety of guided tours, and children have fun on the Little Pilgrim Tour. Vadstena isn't just a place to reach; it's a healing journey for the body and soul.

The Culture Enthusiast

Explore Vadstena, where culture flows year-round. Enjoy unique events like the Vadstena Konstrunda, held the second weekend in September, where local artists showcase their creations. The high-quality opera productions of the Vadstena-Akademien and Shakespearefabriken, with their modern interpretations of William Shakespeare's plays, put the city on the cultural map. At Vadstena Nya Teater, theatre merges with good food and captivating music. The city is also a lace-making stronghold, with traditions continuing through exciting events about this craft. During the summer, both the Lace Museum and the Gottfrid Larsson Museum are open, displaying over 100 of the sculptor's collected works. In Vadstena Folkets Park, visitors wander among oaks and art in the Sculpture Park, and in the summer, the dance floor fills in Krogaränga. You can also take the museum train or cycle a rail trolley here on Sweden's oldest preserved narrow gauge. On Wednesdays, from May to September, Nostalgia Evenings are held at the castle with beautiful cars, motorcycles, and live music. Year-round open galleries, glassworks, performances, and concerts fill the city with artistic diversity and are every culture enthusiast's dream. In 2024, public art will be highlighted at several locations throughout the municipality.

We wish you all a warm welcome to Vadstena – a creative history.

‘An unbelievably magical place’

‘Everyone has a special relationship with the place they grew up, whether they like it or not. I think that Lake Vättern and this area are the best,’ says musician Jonna Lee, who grew up in Fågelsta and the areas around Motala and Vadstena.

From concept to reality

Jonna Lee has worked as a musician since 2000 and achieved her international breakthrough in 2009 with the audiovisual project, iamamiwhoami. Since 2017, she has worked under the name ionnalee, released five albums and toured the world with her creative stage appearances and audiovisual presentations – mainly in the USA but also in Europe and Brazil. Last autumn, she was off on a long-awaited tour after two years of the pandemic and the arrival of her son, Bauer, and in spring she went on another USA tour, this time with Jenny Wilson as guest.

‘I’ve never been on tour without my partner John and Bauer.’

What is it like going on a long tour with a small child?

‘It’s fine. What’s very important is having clear routines. These apply wherever in the world we are. Then, too, my work is focused on the evening, when – luckily enough – small children are asleep. It’s a fabulous way of getting to take my son out in the world. It was not something I had the opportunity to do when I was growing up, before

I could travel on my own. The richness that comes from experiencing lots of different people, places and cultures – even if perhaps you don’t remember it yourself, I believe you’re shaped by it.’

Jonna’s interest in music began in Fivelstad Church at the age of eight.

‘I started in a children’s choir and spent a lot of time in church. It was all uncomplicated. I felt really at home there. Nobody demanded anything in return. I wouldn’t be a musician today if it hadn’t been for the church and choir leader Elisabeth Jivegård.’

By contrast, at school she was afraid to sing in front of people, choosing instead to mime and dance. However, the turning point came in the mid-1990s when she sent a cassette tape to a talent contest in OKEJ magazine and was then given the opportunity to make a Eurodisco record and tour Japan.

‘It was an unbelievable thing for me; I’d never been abroad before.’

This happened during her years at upper secondary school, where she was pursuing an aesthetics of music course.

‘Setting off on tour and releasing a record was a pretty big thing.’

28 VISIT VÄTTERN

Jonna lived in London for a few years before moving to Stockholm at the start of the 2000s. She has made music under the name Jonna Lee, iamamiwhoami, ionna Lee, as well as starting her own record company, ‘to whom it may concern’.

‘Iamamiwhoami started as a YouTube project. We kept our identity secret, and the international media began to discuss who we were.’

Initially, her work – which she did along with Claes Björklund and John Strandh – created great speculation and curiosity. It was a mixture of music, film and art installations. Major global artists such as Lady Gaga and Christina Aguilera denied their involvement and Jonna’s anonymity was retained for a long time.

‘When my identity was revealed, I was chased by MTVUSA and tried to duck all questions about the project. It has become so much bigger than I’d thought from the start.’

In 2011, she received a Swedish Grammis Award for Innovator of the Year.

‘At the time it wasn’t such a big thing. Now, honours from within your industry perhaps feel more important when you’ve been working so very long and hard to get where you are. Generally, I’d don’t think the Swedish music industry has such a good grip on the type of worth it’s sitting on. Many unbelievable artists and musicians aren’t celebrated for their success.’

Ten years ago, she began to film her music material near her childhood haunts around Vadstena and Omberg.

‘It started with a water concept album called “Blue”, and we filmed around Lake Vättern, Omberg and Vadstena for the first time. Everything we wanted could be found here, and since then we’ve continued to film here.’

They had a cottage at Hästholmen for a number of years and later on planned to move to the area once they had found the right place. Finally, they found the place they were looking for outside Vadstena.

‘When I was little, this was a place I wanted to get away from. Now it’s magical – a wonderful place to come to. We’re looking forward to settling down here. I wanted to live where you could see the lake and also Omberg. It’s absolutely incredible: now I can see almost the whole mountain from where we live, as well as Vättern. There’s also something about the light. It reflects on the lake and is so lovely.’

What is your relationship with Lake Vättern?

‘When I was little, I was out on the lake and the islands a lot. There’s an interest in fishing that goes through all of our family. My dad fishes, and many going back in my family were fishermen. We used to go to the island of Fjuk

and barbecue fish. The flora there is very distinctive – a lot of wild strawberries and pine trees. It’s a bit like Gotland.’

Fjuk is a place to which Jonna has returned over the years, and in the summer of 2020 she staged a digital concert there with guest artists via a link. Many of her international fans were charmed by the place that they had been able to accompany her to in a digital and visual manner, and in conjunction with three exclusive concerts that Jonna staged in Vadstena last year, she took a number of her fans with her to the island for a visit.

‘Fans came from all over the world to Vadstena for the concerts in the Shakespeare Factory. The ones who’d travelled a long way would get to visit some of the sites along Lake Vättern where we’d filmed – including Fjuk, where we recorded the video for Chasing Kites in 2014

as well as the live concert from 2020. We had an ionnalee – iamamiwhoami – sightseeing tour to the various places. It was very unreal and great fun. We travelled in Dad’s boat, ate sandwiches from Väderstad Centralkonditori and took pictures in front of the lighthouse.’

This year, Jonna will return to the Shakespeare Factory, formerly the crayfish factory outside Vadstena, and once again has three concerts during the late summer.

‘It’s going to be great fun. I really love the raw industrial venue – it’s something completely different.’

Although her most solid audience is an international one, her concerts are still sell-outs whenever she performs in Sweden. Many fans follow her wherever she plays.

Experience Mjölby municipality!

– Skänninge, Mantorp and Väderstad

Welcome to the beautiful Östgöta plain. Here you will find scenic locations, history, a living countryside and several places that all have their own unique charm.

Cosy Väderstad

Between forest and plain, and only three minutes from the freeway Väderstad is buzzing with life. Visitors travel from far and wide for a coffee and cake at the well-known cafeteria Centralkonditoriet, lunch at Centralkrogen, shopping at the well-stocked building maintenance shop and enjoy delicacies, shellfish, art and interior design. Usually you can experience authentic craftsmanship, fine tastes and second-hand items on the tiny market square. Östad Golf, Sweden’s officially most welcoming golf club, lies just a three iron from the little community.

Historic Skänninge

Anyone interested in history should visit Skänninge, one of Sweden’s oldest towns. Right in the centre of Östergötland’s richest agricultural area and surrounded by mansions and royal estates, Skänninge grew into a trading hub on the Östgöta plain. The market has a long tradition and you can still visit Skänningemarken, Sweden’s oldest street market.

Thanks to Östgötapendeln, the local train, getting to Skänninge is easy. Around the square you will find the Church of our Lady, built around 1300, and the Town Hall, which houses a town museum. Stroll around the cobbled streets, edged in hollyhock, among charming little houses and gardens. Settle down on a bench in the herb garden and enjoy the scene.

For a somewhat longer walk, you can visit the ruins of the hospital where leprosy sufferers received care in mediaeval times, or the ruins of St. Ingrid’s Abbey. The Abbey was the first Dominican abbey in Sweden for women. If you want to delve deeper into the history of Skänninge, a guided tour with the local guide association is highly recommended.

Speed and action at Mantorp

If you are in the mood for some speed and action, Mantorp is well worth a visit. Mantorps Hästsportsarena (Mantorp Equestrian Sports Arena) provides plenty of exciting events. If you would like to experience for yourself the feeling of sitting behind a real trotting horse, there is the opportunity to book a lesson with one of the knowledgeable instructors.

Since its founding in 1969, Mantorp Park has been one of Sweden’s leading motor racing tracks. Each year, a large number of events are held here, some of which are among the largest in Sweden and Europe. There are also courses and driving experiences for those who wish to get behind the wheel themselves. How about test driving a Formula car?

30 MJÖLBY

Mjölby on the banks of the Svartån River

The dark waters of the Svartån River flow quietly through Mjölby, binding together beautiful nature and the urban environment. As the name of the town indicates (Sw. ‘mjöl’ = ‘flour’), an important part of the location’s history are the mills that, next to the rapids, have ground the grain from the fertile Östgöta plain into flour. The folk museum is located on an islet in the middle of Svartån, where those of curious disposition can find out about the history of the place and enjoy the stunning surroundings.

Gästisparken, one of the city parks, offers music in the summer, while anyone keen to take a dip will find Lundbybadet within walking distance. In summer, you can cool off in the outdoor pool, jump off the diving tower or test the obstacle course. You can also hire a canoe and take a trip along Svartån.

Experience nature

For those wishing to experience nature on foot, the Östgötaleden trail passes through the municipality of Mjölby. Here, you will find short and long walks in exciting countryside among orchids, Ice Age tracks and ancient monuments. Why not walk in stunning forest environments to the community of Sya? Here, you can pause for a bite to eat or a pastry in the old station building, where Open New Doors Bahnhof is your host. The trail then takes you on to the lush oak groves of the Solberga Nature Reserve. At some times of the year, you may be in the company of the young animals grazing on the slopes leading down to the Svartån River, while stag beetles and the rare hermit beetle hide among the oaks. People have been living in these places for many thousands of years, and in the reserve you will find burial sites from the Iron Age.

The beautiful Lake Vättern is not actually in Mjölby municipality (though it is not far away), but we have other swimming areas to tempt you with! Skogssjön is a child-friendly open air outdoor facility offering camping, exercise and outdoor recreation. For those who enjoy walking, we have a number of hiking trails to choose from. Take the Ice Age track and explore the various formations carved in stone by the inland ice. Here they are so extensive and prominent that the area is one of national importance for research and teaching. Finish off with a cooling dip!

Get close to nature

One fabulous way to discover nature is by foot, and it has been claimed that one of Sweden’s most beautiful hiking trails is the path of the Östgötaleden trail between Ödeshög and Omberg. It offers fantastic views along the water, through forests and over undulating fields and hills. Ödeshög has as many as 15 nature reserves – all with their own unique setting. Welcome to explore primeval forests, giant spruce trees, limestone marshes, hidden and forgotten historic sites, deciduous forests as well as picturesque agricultural landscapes with amazing biodiversity. New this year are two unique architect-designed windbreaks. You find one of them, with a view hard to beat, along Omberg’s southern slopes. It even offers you the opportunity to sleep overnight to really take in the undulating landscape below. The other windbreak is found via the footbridges starting from the extremely popular and well-known Naturum Tåkern, a high-quality visitors center offering a chance to become one with both flora and fauna. You will most certainly encounter many different and inquisitive dragonflies, and perhaps even make the acquaintance of the municipality’s official bird, the bearded tit, with its habitat close in the reed beds of the beach of the birdlake Tåkern.

Pilgrimages throughout Swedish history

One of the Nordic Region’s most beautiful pilgrim trails, the St. Birgitta Way, runs from Jönköping via Gränna, Ödeshög and Vadstena to the final destination, the Abbey Church at Vadstena. Along the stages of the trail, make stops at some of the lovely, historic sites such as Alvastra Abbey Ruins, Eriksgata, Narbäck & Holkaberg, as well as the Ellen Keys Strand manor.

Cycling trips for everyone

A delightful way to experience our stunning surroundings is by bicycle. Choose from several beautiful and interesting cycle trails. For the more adventurous cyclist there are mountain and downhill biking trails at Omberg and Skönatorpet. If you are training for a cycle race maybe you want to try some of the biggest trails – Runt-Vättern-leden, Vättern-Sommenleden, Vätternrundan or Tjejvättern. Hästholmen harbour

Hästholmen, a charming village, expands during summer, meaning plenty of action around the Hästholmen harbour. People gather here by boat, car, bicycle, motorbike or motorhome to enjoy the beautiful views, great food and drinks, to go swimming in Lake Vättern, test their luck at fishing or set off by kayak to explore Omberg’s caves and cliffs. One place to visit is 31:ans Glass & Kök, a popular place for celebrities, with award-winning ice creams, or the newly refurbished Vätterhästen restaurant with its popular wienerschnitzel. Just by the shore you find Hélènes Café & Bistro with their prawn sandwiches and buffet. During high season, pay a visit to the Food Court, which offers sushi, burgers, tacos and delicious cheeses. Besides all this, you will find flowers and plants, art, minigolf, rock carvings and the light –that unique light searched for by every artist. Did you know that the Hästholmen harbour played a major role in Swedish history? This was where the steamer SS Per Brahe ran aground during the night of 19-20 November 1918, with the admired artists John and Ester Bauer on board. During the summer, you can learn more about the historical event in the Vätternrummet museum, located next door to the Tourism Office, at the docks.

In the rural areas there are farm shops, “pick-your-own” fields, flea markets, florists, fashion and interior design shops as well as various studios with local artists and craftspeople. In the center of Ödeshög, there is a variety of shops offering everything from locally produced delicacies, jewelry, underwear, electronics, footwear, second hand bargains and home knitting to freshly caught fish from Vättern. GRÄNNA & Visingsö

GRÄNNA – WITH A TASTE OF CANDY

Gränna is a Swedish idyll with charming old wooden houses, cobblestone streets and beautiful surroundings. The town was founded by Per Brahe the Younger in 1652, and was the first town in Sweden to be founded by the Count with town privileges. Gränna is world famous thanks to its tasty peppermint rock – and S A Andrée's ill-fated polar expedition by hot air balloon.

For nature lovers, Gränna is a miniature paradise. Here you can find peaceful nature reserves, enjoyable hiking trails and magical forests. Discover the surroundings that inspired John Bauer with Trolska boat trips. Grännaberget offers fantastic views of the town and Vättern.

From successful peppermint rock to failed balloon expedition

In and around Gränna there are rich traces of the noble Brahe family. Röttle By is an industrial village founded by Count Per Brahe in the 17th century. Brahehus is Per Brahe the Younger’s pleasure palace and was built in 1638. Perched on the mountain ridge next to the motorway, the ruins of the castle are one of Sweden’s most visited ancient remains.

Thanks to Amalia Erikson, Gränna is now the peppermint rock capital of Sweden. Amalia Erikson was born 200 years ago and it is thanks to her that Gränna is now the peppermint rock capital of the world. At the Grenna Museum you can meet Amalia and other historically important people. Polarcenter at Grenna Museum features the country’s largest collection of polar exploration history objects. The crowning glory of the museum are objects from S A Andrée’s polar expedition.

Peppermint rock production was started in Gränna in the 1850s by the poor widow Amalia Erikson, who later became a successful entrepreneur. Today, there are numerous shops in Gränna where you can watch the production process. The new EU designation PGI (protected geographical indication) means that only peppermint rock made in Gränna may be called ‘Authentic Gränna Peppermint Rock’.

VISINGSÖ – The pearl of Lake Vättern

According to the legend, Visingsö Island was formed when Vist the Giant threw a tuft of grass into Lake Vättern to give his lover something to stand on. That 'tuft of grass' is as vibrant today as it was a thousand years ago. It is a place with exciting historic remains, Sweden’s largest oak forest and an entertaining treasure hunt.

From Gränna harbour there are frequent ferry crossings to the island of Visingsö, the pearl of Lake Vättern. Once there, you can choose to get around the island by bicycle or horsedrawn carriage – the popular ‘remmalagen’. The proximity of the water makes it easy to go kayaking or swimming. If you are happiest on land, the Stall Roempke riding centre offers hacks and riding lessons. Another adventure is the treasure hunt, where the map will guide you to five stops where you get clues that help you finally open the treasure chest.

Long association with the Brahe family

Several ruins of castles and fortresses in this area bear witness to a former landscape of power. Visingsö Fortress in Näs is the ruins of Sweden’s oldest royal castle, from the 12th century. From the 17th century, the powerful Brahe family lived in the resplendent Visingsborg Castle. Today, all that remains is a ruin. The Brahe Church was built in the 17th century on the foundations of the mediaeval Ströja Church. Today, the church is the finest example in the county of the splendour of the age of Sweden as a great power, with a range of art treasures and exciting stories.

JÖNKÖPING & HUSKVARNA

Jönköping & Huskvarna – interwoven with a rich history

Vist the Giant stands in Huskvarna, looking out over Lake Vättern. Here you breathe the impressive history of the Husqvarna factory. A stone's throw from here you will find one of the country’s oldest cities, Jönköping, with its magnificent nature, a long sandy beach close to the town, a rich restaurant scene, a fascinating history of match production and John Bauer’s fabulous art.

Jönköping shares its heart with three lakes. With just over 140,000 inhabitants, it is the only major town or city around Lake Vättern. Here it bubbles with life all year round. In the city centre you will find cosy side streets, museums, libraries, shops, restaurants, hotels and a university with students from all over the world.

The proximity to nature is one of the main advantages of both Jönköping and Huskvarna. Here you will find pleasant cycling trails, well-trodden forest paths and silent nature reserves. High up in Jönköping, with a fantastic view of the city, is Stadsparken, with the largest playground in Jönköping, animal pens, minigolf, barbecue areas and a unique bird museum.

Events, culture and history

Jönköping’s central location in southern Sweden makes it a natural focal point for culture, sports, meetings and outdoor activities. It is one of the country’s most widely used event cities, organising national and international sporting events such as IRONMAN 70.3 Jönköping. For the next two years, the Mountain Bike Youth European Championships will be held in Huskvarna and Jönköping.

Looking for art that breaks boundaries and smashes the rules? If so, you should visit Österängens Konsthall. Would you like to see John Bauer’s magical art, with its trolls, elves and gnomes? Then the Jönköping County Museum is the place for you.

There are only three matchstick museums in the entire world and one of these is the newly refurbished Match Museum (Tändsticksmuseet) in Jönköping. In the beautiful wooden building from 1848, you can learn all about the history of matches. At Tändsticksområdet (the ‘matchstick area’), which is classified as a listed building, you can also see other 19th century buildings, shop in local shops and enjoy good food and drink.

Husqvarna is the heart of Huskvarna

The history of the Husqvarna factory began in 1689 with the production of muskets and other weapons for the Swedish armed forces. The Husqvarna Museum contains most of the items produced by the factory: sewing machines, stoves, ovens, bicycles, motorbikes, chainsaws, lawnmowers and household appliances. Right next to the museum is Slottsvillan, a listed building constructed in 1895 as the home of Husqvarna’s Director Wilhelm Tham, his wife and their nine children. Today Slottsvillan is run as a hotel. Opposite the museum and Slottsvillan, you will find Smedbyn. In the 18th century, the small red buildings were used as smiths’ workshops and later as housing for the workers at the Husqvarna gun factory. Today they contain handicraft workshops, cafés and galleries.

Many celebrities have performed at Huskvarna Folkets Park. Since 1925, the park has been a meeting place for music, culture, festivals, theatre, trade fairs, meetings and other events.

EXPERIENCE HABO

Welcome to Habo, the place where you can find peace and quiet next to one of our fishing lakes but where action and adventure are never that far away. We offer an experience that is just right for you! Welcome to Habo!

RESTAURANT EXPERIENCES AT KÄRNEKULLA

Alongside the 195 road, right at the entrance to Habo, an entirely new residential area has grown up over the last few years, Kärnekulla. Businesses have invested in the area and there are grocery stores, car companies and a gym, as well as a broad offering of restaurants.

Here you can find out how Neapolitan pizza is made in special ovens at Ciro, enjoy a taste of Asia inspired by Japanese cuisine at NOC, locally produced burgers at Brooklyn Burger or enjoy coffee at the historic Landh Konditori, which opened as early at 1933 in Mullsjö and can now be found in Habo in the form of Landhs Bröd & Deli. During the summer, they also make gelato, which is sold in the shop.

Coffee stop in the countryside

On the high ground above Brandstorp, with views over paddocks, Lake Vättern and Visingsö,the family farm The View Sweden has created a place to stop in your journey around Sweden. In addition to the restaurant and café, there is also a motorhome site open all year round.

Strömbäck Gårdscafé is another oasis where the café is housed in the farm’s courtyard. Here you can enjoy the forest around you. And, for a café with slightly different themes, try Vildmarkscaféet – Experience Wildpark or the nostalgic Brandstorps Lanthandel, which takes you back to the 1950s.

hidden gems with a history

In Habo, we have picked out fifteen historic remains that tell the story of the area. These hidden gems are easily accessible and close to roads and parking opportunities. Discover our history in the remains of a hill cottage, tar gutter, stone circles and, not least, our church villages, including Habo Church. Information, pictures and directions can be found on the municipality of Habo’s website, as well as on Naturkartan.

Accessible nature

The countryside in Habo municipality offers different types of experiences. Everything from the trails close to the urban area around the stunning Hökesån River to the longer hikes up to Hökensås or Furusjö. Here you will find 15 different nature reserves, several of which are of value in strengthening biodiversity. By all means have a look at our website for the best experience before setting out.

One example is the Hökesån River. This watercourse runs from Lake Hökesjön to Lake Vättern, a stretch of almost 18 kilometres. The river has been restored and this has freed up the migration routes for fish. This means that at Habo you can see Lake Vättern’s trout spawning in the autumn. In the spring, you can see grayling instead.

Another suggestion in spring is Fiskebäck, with its masses of wood anemones and birdsong. In summer, the lush deciduous forest provides cooling shade. At the reserve, there is an easy trail that then turns into a winding forest path. This is a popular destination for the entire family.

Västra Vätterleden Trail

If you wish to challenge yourself and go a bit further, the Västra Vätterleden trail is a good suggestion. The trail passes through a landscape that is typical for the southwestern side of Lake Vättern. This stage makes for easy walking and follows good paths and, occasionally, a low-traffic gravel or forest road.

The most recent Ice Age has left a strong mark on the landscape and largely dictated the living conditions for the flora, fauna and people who came to the area. The landscape was shaped on the edge of the gigantic sheets of ice that once covered the entire country. When the glaciers retreated approx. 13,000 years ago, enormous volumes of water, stone, gravel and sand were deposited and these formed the lakes, watercourses, deltas, ravines, plateaus and ridges that we see today.

The gently undulating countryside forms a mosaic of coniferous forest, mosses and wetlands, each with its distinctive character. Pine forests are light and airy, often covered in a carpet of grey and yellow-white reindeer moss. Spruce forests are denser, allowing in less light, and the ground is covered in green moss. To ‘hear’ the silence, just stand still in a spruce forest.

Stora Kärr beech forest

Within walking distance of the centre of Habo, there is a small but magnificent beech forest, located north of the natural northern limit of the beech. The origins of the Stora Kärr beech forest can be traced back to the 17th century when Stora Kärr belonged to the Brahe countship of Visingborg. The forest was probably planted at that time, since which is has self-rejuvenated. Today the forest consists of both old forest and young trees. The thick beeches in the northern part of the reserve are at least a few hundred years old. However, the majority of the beech forest is significantly younger, barely 100 years. Experience it in spring, when the ground is awash with wood anemones!

Vättern – more than a lake

Not the largest and not the deepest. And yet Vättern may be the most unique lake in Sweden. The lake has its own unique character, with great depths and clear, cold, nutrient-poor water. Its location in southern Sweden allows for an ecosystem with a very unusual combination of southern and northern species. However, the lake depends on its tributaries in order for many of its unique natural values to survive.

For such a large lake, Vättern’s catchment area –i.e. the area from which the water finally runs into Vättern – is small. This is because Vättern has an elevated location in the landscape, between the Småland highlands of the south, Hökensås, the East Vättern Scarp Landscape and Tiveden to the north.

On its journey to the lake, the water brings with it materials from the surroundings: not just from forests and lakes, marshes and fields but also from roads and towns around the lake. This transported matter may, for example, cloud the water or fertilise the lake so that more phytoplankton grow. However, the small streams surrounding Lake Vättern transport only limited amounts of matter.

The lake contains a lot of water relative to the comparatively small volume that runs into it each year. This means that the water remains in the lake for an unusually long time – no less than 60 years. The long residence time of the water in the lake provides time for matter to be used or to settle as sediment on the bottom – the lake’s own natural cleaning processes. The water in Lake Vättern is therefore exceptionally clear, and visibility can be down to more than 15 metres. Unfortunately, the long residence time also means that matter and chemicals that cannot be broken down, such as some environmental toxins, remain for a long time.

LIFE IN THE streamS

The tributaries of Lake Vättern are not actually part of the lake, but they are vitally important environments for several of the species found in the lake, such as trout and grayling. The cold, flowing, oxygen-rich water in many of the streams, along with the stony beds, provide perfect conditions for trout and grayling to spawn.

Grayling find their way into the streams in spring, while trout wait for autumn. They spawn in the streams and, once the eggs have hatched, the young fish (fry) live for a while in the streams before migrating into Lake Vättern. There, they grow large and return to the streams as adults when it is time for spawning.

Lake Vättern’s tributaries are also home to other major natural values such as rare bottom-dwelling insect larvae and clams, for example rare stoneflies, freshwater pearl mussel and the primitive European river lamprey.

MIGRATION BARRIERS

PUT

VÄTTERN’S

valueS AT RISK

Historically, humans have created major problems for migrating fish species such as trout and gray-

ling as they move up streams to spawn by building migration barriers such as dams and hydroelectric power stations. In Lake Vättern, there was once a population of extremely large trout that spawned in the Motala Ström river system, but the expansion of hydroelectric power wiped out the population.

Nature and fishing enthusiasts, municipalities and authorities have work extensively to reduce barriers to migration in Lake Vättern’s tributaries.

‘The key to successful measures in water is good dialogue and consensus among all affected parties where everyone has a common objective, sprinkled with patience’

– Ingemar Bergbom, Environmental Inspector, Habo municipality

As a result of this work, since the mid-1990s the population of trout has increased and the previously uncommon trout now features very commonly in the catch. The freshwater pearl mussel, which can be found in a number of tributaries and is dependent on trout, has also begun to make a recovery.

Unfortunately, things have gone less well for grayling, and the population is very weak. It is not currently known why that is, but a number of initiatives and projects are now in progress in an attempt to save the grayling. Supportive releases of grayling fry in streams where grayling spawn, and their reintroduction in streams where the grayling has disappeared, are examples of methods used.

The trout and grayling populations are also monitored in annual studies of spawning fish by volunteer fish enthusiasts and by fish sampling in Vättern.

‘For almost 20 years, volunteers have been helping to monitor fish spawning in Vättern’s tributaries, an effort that has been very important to fish management’

– Anton Halldén, County Fishing Consultant at the Jönköping County Administrative Board.

The work on Lake Vättern’s tributaries is an example of successful nature conservation. It is important to continue this knowledge-based work in order to preserve the unique and extensive biological values in Lake Vättern and its tributaries.

NOTE: There are invasive alien species in Lake Vättern. Drain, clean and dry all equipment before moving it to or from Lake Vättern.

A magical December in Hjo

– Christmas atmosphere on the shore of Lake Vättern!

In December, Hjo is transformed into a festive scene like something from A Christmas Carol. It is a time of Christmas tranquility and festivities. With Christmas concerts, a traditional Christmas market, an icy dip in Lake Vättern, Christmas tree safari and a convivial atmosphere in the town’s cafés, Hjo invites visitors to experience an unforgettable winter month. Below, we take a closer look at some of the highlights in Hjo during December.,

Hjo Christmas Market and annual Christmas dip in Lake Vättern

December kicks off with the Hjo Christmas market, held on the Saturday of the first weekend of Advent. The town is then transformed into a brightly coloured marketplace, where locally produced goods, handmade gifts, horse and carriage rides and visits from Santa create a festive atmosphere. At the same time, brave cold water swimmers welcome the winter with the annual Christmas dip on the sandy beach of Guldkroksbadet. Watching the swimmers in their fancy dress as the jump into the icy waters of Lake Vättern is usually a popular and memorable way to start the Christmas period. Hjo Christmas Market is then followed by most of the other markets. These include the annual Fågelås Christmas Market. A traditional Christmas Market at Almnäs Bruk.

Christmas music and traditions

Atmospheric concerts follow one after the other in Hjo Church during December. One of these is the annual St. Lucia concert, with the seasonal tones of several different choirs. For relaxed Christmas shopping in the town’s charming shops, try the shops with Sunday opening and the Gift Market, while Santa’s visit to Grebban Mill spreads joy among the young ones and provides an extra touch of magic. You can also join the Christmas Tree Safari. A wonderfully enjoyable event where you travel by horse and sleigh and cut your very own Christmas tree in the wintry landscape at Grevbäck, immediately north of Hjo town.

Visit www.vastsverige.com/hjo/jul to plan your journey and to take part in the magical moments that this charming little wooden town has to offer during Christmas month.

The cycling and family festival

Planning the summer’s excursions is in full progress! Do make a note of 8–9 June and 14–15 June in your diary. This is when Vätternrundan will take place. Vätternrundan is not only the world’s largest recreational cycling event, attracting around 36,000 participants from all over Sweden and the world beyond, it is also a cycling and family festival that involves over 4,000  volunteers and any number of spontaneous well-wishers along Lake Vättern. Here are some tips on how to make your experience even more memorable!

Cheer on the participants

Pack your picnic basket and camping stool and visit at least a few places along the route. Vätternrundan attracts participants from all over the world and offers a plethora of bicycles, clothes, riding styles and headdresses. To make a real impression, for example, why not take a lead from the Wedding Priest in Dalbyporten or the Pop Choirs in Vadstena? The participants appreciate elements of surprise like these. To find suitable locations along the route and to find out the easiest and safest ways to get there, see Vätternrundan’s event guide (guide.vatternrundan.se).

Stay in Motala

During Cycling Week, the centre of Motala is filled with people exercising and cycling enthusiasts, relatives and other visitors. The Town Park provides, among other things, a children’s area with free activities, catering and souvenir sales, and a large Stadium shop selling cycling gear and much more besides. Prominent people are interviewed and local talents perform on the Town Park stage. The children’s favourite, Vättis, will be there for a hug or two. Over the weekend of 8–9 June, you can book a Family Package, which includes accommodation on the camping site or in a hotel, evening meal in a restaurant, an exclusive behind-the-scenes guide to Vätternrundan, a meeting with Vättis and entry to a number of fun activities

Race at your own pace

To experience Cycling Week, you need to be there – preferably in the saddle and with a light swimming bag. Register yourself, your family or a friend for one of the six races and experience it yourself! You can register on the day before or even on the same day if places are available. You can borrow or hire a bike on site, and food, drink and a massage are included in the entry fee. Vätternrundan is a recreational race – challenge yourself on your terms and at your pace. For the youngest visitors, there is also Minivättern, where they get to sense the atmosphere of the race.

Vätternrundan – how it started.

Over half a century ago, Doctor Sten-Otto Liljedahl wanted to improve public health in Sweden, starting with himself. Two years later, in 1964, he set off to cycle a lap around Lake Vättern, not knowing at the time that it would become the world’s biggest recreational cycling race. With his first trip fresh in his mind, he decided to do it again, this time in better condition and with more cyclists. And so it came about. Today, Vätternrundan is a driving force that puts well-being into motion from all perspectives.

Opening hours: event area in Motala

The programme will be added to continuously, so keep a lookout in Vätternrundan’s event guide (guide.vatternrundan.se).

THE GOLDEN TOWN OF KARLSBORG – life with a golden lining!

Life in Karlsborg has that little bit extra. It is a place with several gems ready for you to discover, whether you are in search of life’s pleasures or life’s adventures. A sauna, walking in a national park, historical experiences, relaxed boat trips and swimming somewhere along the long beaches.

For those wishing to discover nature, there are 13 nature reserves and 28 fabulous hiking trails. When it is time for something good to eat, there are many different options available. Karlsborg is a paradise for anyone who wants to enjoy the water. Because of its location between two lakes, it is hard not to be close to the water. The fresh Lake Vättern is at your disposal, with its wonderful archipelago, the Ombo islands, and the island of Kyrkogårdsön/ Boviken. With the best freshwater diving and fishing opportunities in the Nordic Region, it is possible to spend a whole day on the water.

The Göta Canal tempts you with its boat trips, and the quiet little lakes in Tiveden provide tranquillity deep in the wilderness. Forsvik invites a visit with its mill and the oldest and highest lock on the Göta Canal.

More adventures await at Karlsborg Fortress. During the action-packed guided tours for the whole family, offered all year round, you will learn more about the captivating history of the fortress. So why are you waiting? Welcome to Karlsborg.

Karlsborg Fortress

Construction of the mighty fortress began in 1819 on the Vanäs peninsula. The site was proposed by General and Vice Admiral Baltzar von Platen, who also initiated the Göta Canal project. The idea was to move the government, the Riksdag, the royal family, as well as the central bank gold reserve here in the event of war. In modern times, the gold reserve has been housed in one of the cellars of the fortress. During World War II, 140 tonnes of gold were stored in the fortress. Karlsborg literally became a place of gold.

Today, Karlsborg Fortress is one of Sweden’s largest and best-preserved fortresses, with its own museum, guided tours, exciting activities, shops and restaurants. Inside the impressive walls of Karlsborg Fortress, an adventure awaits visitors of all ages.

and the beach at Vitsand. Here you will find incredible opportunities for hiking in varied terrain, cycling, riding, kayaking, fishing, or venturing out on a high ropes course. In the national park, the forest is allowed to develop into a natural forest, untouched by the large-scale forestry of recent decades. The large areas of old forest (somewhat unusual in southern Sweden) lend a unique character to the national park, from the age and splendour of the forest to the wildly shaped landscapes. Tiveden National Park covers 2,030 hectares and there are almost 35 kilometres of marked trails, with routes of from 0.9 km to 9.5 km.

Forsvik

Forsvik is idyllic with its picturesque mill buildings and the oldest and highest lock on the Göta Canal. Enjoy the sparkling water, the aroma of coffee from the cafés, the local selection of small shops, or a tasty ice cream while watching the boats glide through the lock. Built in 1813 and with a drop of 3.5 metres, the lock is not only the Göta Canal’s oldest but also the tallest. Forsvik Mill has an amazing industrial history. Swedish engineer Jan Ericsson, who later invented the propeller, once lived here. At the same time as you can follow 600 years of industrial history at the mill museum, there are other activities in the area. The museum is something for the whole family to experience, and the area contains several opportunities to sit down on a blanket and enjoy nature. If you are looking for accommodation, there are hostels and hotel rooms. Together this is a fascinating place with authentic charm!

Experience Karlsborg in autumn and winter Autumn in Karlsborg offers that little bit extra. It is impossible to miss the bright yellow leaves of the chestnut trees inside Karlsborg Fortress, the markets dotted around the municipality and the different activities for all ages. There are several traditional events to look forward to during the autumn season. When the autumn winds blow, a warming visit to one of the village’s restaurants is highly recommended. Autumn hikes in both the Granvik nature area and Stora Fjället nature reserve are also popular, while Tiveden provides awesome surroundings during this season. Nature’s larder is full of fly honeysuckle and mushrooms. Even in its winter garb, the landscape here is gorgeous, and our municipality has winter activities for everyone. Walk along the beaches of Lake Vättern in the winter light, or try cross-country skiing on prepared ski trails, three of which are illuminated, in Norra Skogen’s recreational park. If the ice is lying on the lakes, there are opportunities for tour skating and ice fishing. If you would prefer to stay on terra firma, you can experience a touch of nostalgia at our popular outdoor skating and ice hockey rink in Hanken, with natural ice and electric lighting. Around Christmas time, there is a magical dazzle around Karlsborg and the Christmas markets in the area. Forsvik’s Christmas market anno 1906 is an old-fashioned Christmas experience, and the Christmas market around the fortress area provides a Christmas atmosphere with market stands and entertainment. For anyone wishing to step into a Carl Larsson picture, a fabulous vehicle trip and dining at one of our restaurants in Tiveden will take you there just like that! Experience the golden town of Karlsborg – something for everyone, all year round!

Winter tips for Lake Vättern

Old-fashioned Christmas market and ‘window display Sunday’

Many towns and villages offer a Christmas market or ‘window display Sunday’ during December. Get in the festive mood with an old-fashioned Christmas on snow-covered cobblestoned streets.

Check our event calendar to see which date suits you best.

Experience the magical light

In January and February, there are spectacular sunsets and sunrises across Lake Vättern. Intense colours in shades of yellow, orange, purple and pink tinge both sky and lake. Many artists and writers have been inspired by the unique light at Vättern.

Cold water swimming

The fact that the human body feels good after cold water swimming has been everywhere in the last few years. But what is so great about throwing yourself into ice-cold water? In addition to providing a huge adrenaline kick for many people, and a feeling of well-being, some research also shows that swimming in really cold water has significantly reduced tension, fatigue and poor memory and improved mood, while research participants have also reported pain relief linked to rheumatism, fibromyalgia and asthma. In other words, there are only positive effects. So this winter, take a refreshing dip in Europe’s fifth largest lake – for free.

Winter fishing

Fancy a real fishing adventure? With one of Sweden’s most qualified guides, Charterfiske offers first-class trolling fishing trips on Lake Vättern. A real adventure with a great chance of catching char, trout or salmon.

And the cliffs at Omberg and Stora Lund offer some of northern Europe’s best salmon fishing from land.
