A Record TRE23 Rocked Run Specialty

The Running Event 2023 was the largest show in its 17-year history — with record attendance and exhibit space along with a top-shelf education program and, for the first time, pickleball.

T

hey say everything is bigger in Texas — and that certainly held true last month as The Running Event 2023 took over the Austin Convention Center in Austin, TX, and hosted thousands of industry professionals at a record-breaking event. Ta k i ng plac e f rom Novemb er 28-30, more than 4000 specialty retail professionals and brand representatives gathered for the 17th edition of TRE. That marks a 27 percent increase in attendance from 2022. But attendance wasn’t the only big thing in Texas that week. The 79,000-squarefoot exhibit hall was nearly 20 percent larger than last year and the space featured 314 brands showcasing the latest footwear, apparel, technology, nutrition — and pickleball (more on that later). In addition to seeing the latest products, attendees accessed dozens of educational sessions and networking. “The week was a special one for our industry and for the TRE team,” says Christina Henderson, TRE event director. “We’re always asking ourselves, ‘How can we be better? How can we be more than a trade show?’ From the education and networking to the new opportunities available, we left Austin feeling inspired by and proud of the run and outdoor specialty industry — and our attendees and exhibitors feel the same.” Among the many highlights: 6

runninginsight.com

• TRE 2023 opened with a bang at a trail cleanup at the Ann and Roy Butler Hike and Bike Trail, held in partnership with ASICS and the Low Impact Alliance. It was the first time the cleanup was held prior to the opening of TRE and it proved to be a good move, attracting well more than 100 participants who collected 1000 pounds of trash from the trails, woods and even Lady Bird Lake in an miniarmada of kayaks.

• Soon after the cleanup the TRE23 conference program began, featuring 23 sessions focused on the latest industry insights and best practices. Deep dive sessions in the morning were followed by an afternoon of sessions with topics that ranged from Artificial Intelligence to Leadership Training to Gen Z. • Also on Tuesday was 2023 keynote “Running Through Today’s Retail Landscape,” presented by Melissa

TRE23 Rocked Run Specialty (continued) THE RUN SPECIALTY INDUSTRY HONORED ITS OWN One of the highlights of the closing night party at The Running Event was the annual Industry Awards ceremony, presented by a number of brands and recognizing individuals and stores for their special contributions to the run specialty business. • The Saucony Run for Good Award was presented to Charm City Run. • The Ubuntu Award, presented by Balega, went to Dave and Lisa Zimmer, Fleet Feet Chicago. • On’s Impact Award went to The Exchange. • The Brooks Rising Star Award was presented to five individuals: Harry Chandler, Charlotte Running Company; DeAnthony White, Charm City Run; Melissa Vitale, True Grit Running Company; Elyse Braner, Pacers Running; and Tammy Zito, Palmetto Running Company.

Gonzalez, principal of MG2 and founder of the Lionesque Group. She took attendees on a journey to learn how independent run specialty retailers can adopt some of the best practices and merchandising ideas of the bigger retailers — and how these same independent stores can successfully compete by being agile and creative. • The largest exhibit hall in TRE’s history opened November 29 to a long line of attendees and media. In addition to exploring the latest products coming to market, attendees accessed more educational sessions at the Training Camp Theater and received professional headshots at The Hub. • Did we happen to mention

pickleball? A full-sized court was built on the TRE show floor sponsored by K-Swiss, Selkirk Sport, OS1st and Cur rex. Visitors lear ned about the business opportunity presented by the fastestgrowing sport in America. Two sessions, the first focusing on Why Sell Pickleball and the second explaining How To Sell Pickleball, attracted significant interest in run retailers considering carrying the sport. Other attendees were happy simply to get some playing time and demo some products on the regulation size court. • Bringing a bit of modern media to the show was the inaugural TRE Livestream, hosted by PR Project’s Tommie Runz and Gary Koutsoubos.

The Running Event director Christina Henderson says the record-setting three days left the run and outdoor specialty business inspired for the future.

Creating a more inclusive and transparent event, enthusiasts and industry professionals at home had the opportunity to hear from brands and retailers – and even Running Insight editor Michael Jacobsen – while gaining a behind-thescenes look at the industry’s largest trade event. Broadcasted directly from the exhibit hall, all interviews featured on the livestream can be found at https://www.youtube.com/@ therunningevent5660/streams. • It was a bit damp on Thursday but that didn’t stop hundreds of runners heading out to the annual Indie 5K and Keen’s One Mile Walk

at Camp Mabry — with Sound Running’s Cross Champs starting close behind. • The Running Event closed on a celebratory note with the 2023 Industry Awards Reception, which included the 2023 Best Running Stores celebration. After recognizing all of the Best Running Stores, the four finalists were honored: Fleet Feet Louisville, Mill City Running, Palmetto Running Company and Running Lab. Palmetto Running was named Store of the Year. Mark your calendars: The Running Event 2024 is all set for Nov. 19-21 back at the Austin Convention Center. n © 2023 Diversified Communication

Balance of Power The availability of advanced tech is helping to raise the bar in running shoes. / By Cregg Weinmann

T

here is a condition known as equilibration, which is a restoration of balance or equilibrium. In the run specialty space, that means the current condition of technical running products has been unbalanced with the flood of technologies, materials and constructions that have impacted footwear over the past couple of seasons. But equilibrium is coming back. One benefit of the foam technologies, upper constr uctions and midsole geometries is their availability now to nearly all of the brands. The recent jump forward by some proactive brands has opened the door for factories to provide the same types of services to smaller players. So as more brands join the table to play their hands, the beneficiaries are the running specialty stores — and ultimately the running customers. One by product of t he cu r rent Supercritical heyday is the entree of small brands doing big things. While there is undoubtedly a limit in the marketplace, there is lots of hopeful thinking and the running public being the optimistic sort, who can really tell where the next Hoka or On Running brand is coming from? Given the opportunity to roam the aisles for two days at The Running Event 2023 last month in Austin, TX, it was enlightening to see what the brands – large and small – are bringing to market. It revealed a rich tapestry of choices in road, trail and track — here are just a few that really made an impact. • Adidas Outdoor has a trio of uptempo trail running shoes in the Terrex sub brand known as Agravic, a Latin derivative which means “gravity defying.” Its tiers span the spectrum from the pro level to the warming huts with a running product 10

The action at the Brooks Running booth during all three days of TRE23 was testament to the new product advances at the running industry’s market-leading footwear brand.

for all serious trail runners. • Altra recently introduced its first low drop model, the FWD Experience, while maintaining the remainder of their line in the zero drop range, kind of a big deal with them maintaining a strict zero drop ethos for more than a decade. One refreshing development is a top-to-bottom revamp of the Escalante Racer. • ASICS’ adoption of fewer parts along with foam-based midsoles has allowed geometries to drive the cushioning of midsoles throughout its line while driving more creative thinking with longtime favorites as well and its newer models. The Novablast 4 is updated as well as the Nimbus 26, each covering slightly different purposes. • While the Arc’teryx brand has been around for years, the footwear at TRE23 revealed some impressive use of materials, between rock plates, foams and traction. There are many niches in

the running world, the question in my mind is, Are there enough? • Brooks has been busy, really busy with an upgrade across the breadth of the Brooks Running line that was on display at TRE, from road to trail to track. My favorite running choices — all three! New tooling, stacks and uppers reflect the changes and also emphasize the updated focus, as well as serving the spectrum of Brooks Running consumers. • Diadora, Montebelluna’s best running brand, featured solutions for daily running, offroad and a new tall stack plated racer — not a me-too, but rather informed by recent racing breakthroughs. It joins a good product line up to back the competitive efforts. • A new brand, Hettas is designed for women’s feet, with feedback from an all-women study to inform the design of its three styles. The design, top-quality materials and model options will satisfy a

Locked In At Fleet Feet Joey Pointer is committed to growing Fleet Feet into a national retail brand. / By Danny Smith

O

n a Wednesday afternoon at The Running Event late last month, Fleet Feet CEO Joey Pointer settles into a stool in the corner of the Austin Convention Center. He opens a hardcover notebook lined with neatly arranged notes, looks up and flashes a smile. The trials of recent years could have easily hardened Pointer’s entrepreneurial soul and turned his curly locks gray. Nearly three years ago, of course, the pandemic sparked uncertainty and rattled the prospects of brick-and-mortar retail. Then, two years ago Fleet Feet acquired Jackrabbit and began the arduous process of rolling nearly five dozen stores into Fleet Feet operations — a task littered with hurdles, including a lawsuit over the deal’s final purchase terms. And like other run specialty leaders, Pointer endured a number of pressing challenges that threatened Fleet Feet’s ascent, from supply chain disruptions to staffing shortages to economic turmoil. But today, in a quiet corner of the busy TRE expo hall, Pointer displays no wear. His energy, like the red Fleet Feet hoodie he sports, is bright and his ambitions stand as high as ever. “Incredible growth’s coming,” beams Pointer, who will celebrate his 20th year with Fleet Feet in 2024. “We want to be the best national resource for local running.” 14

runninginsight.com

Fleet Feet CEO Joey Pointer sat down at The Running Event with Running Insight senior writer Danny Smith to explain where the retailer is headed in 2024 and beyond.

After opening 19 stores in 2023 and completing 10 conversions of existing shops, the Nor th Carolina-based company – now operating under the Onward Outdoor Brands banner in a move for further corporate growth – will finish 2023 with 291 stores in its

orbit. Systemwide sales, meanwhile, are approaching $600 million, highlighted by a record-breaking Black Friday in which Fleet Feet stores collectively recorded more than $2.35 million in sales — the biggest sales day in the chain’s history. As exciting as those figures are,

Locked In At Fleet Feet (continued)

Joey Pointer has successfully navigated the chain through challenging retail and economic times and remains on track to reach his goal of becoming a 400-store, $1 billion retailer.

Pointer understands nothing is guaranteed, particularly given persistent geopolitical tensions, inflationary pressures and rising competition. The challenge, he admits, is to celebrate the journey and savor the wins while remaining aware of potential pitfalls. Seeking More Growth Pointer calls managing Fleet Feet’s growth his priority, especially as leadership “pushes the pedal” to reach 400 stores and $1 billion in annual sales. “Growth creates complexity and it’s complexity that kills growth,” he says. 16

runninginsight.com

Simplifying the business while maintaining momentum has consumed Pointer of late and sparked numerous investments. The company has installed new systems for enterprise resource planning and warehouse management, introduced bilingual robots into its warehouse (yes, really!) and finally moved on from QuickBooks as its prevailing accounting software. “We have to ensure our footing is solid and that we have the proper foundation to support growth today and tomorrow,” says Pointer, who recently joined the board of Girls on the Run International.

Pointer doesn’t see any one particular growth strategy for Fleet Feet and, in fact, insists he’s agnostic when it comes to growing Fleet Feet’s store count. R ight now, F leet Feet fe a t u r e s a 6 0 /4 0 s p l i t between franchised stores and corporate-owned shops. Existing franchisees as well as the corporate office continue opening new stores in markets such as Nashville, Louisville and Indianapolis. In addition to introducing new retail locations, Fleet Feet continues converting independent running stores into Fleet Feet operations, such as the Ultra Running Company’s recent shift to Fleet Feet Charlotte–Myers Pa rk. If a r unning store possesses strong financials, capable st a ff, a hea lt hy culture and lively community engagement, Pointer says Fleet Feet is more than willing to explore a deal. “I think we’re a great exit strategy,” he says, “but I’m also not interested in a good price for a bad business. I’d rather pay a fair price for a good business.” Notably, some of Fleet F e e t ’s f r a n c h i s e e s a r e getting into the acquisition game, too. In November, for instance, Fleet Feet Fort Myers owners Janene and Brian Urichko purchased Run Florida on McGregor from John Rinkenbaugh. “We wa nt [ F leet Feet franchisees] to own their local market,” Pointer says. “It’s a winning strategy.” For Pointer, it all contributes to the chase for 400 retail

locations. “We want to grow into a national brand,” Pointer says. Seizing Opportunity in 2024 As the calendar turns, Pointer says Fleet Feet will continue charging ahead. Fleet Feet plans to open roughly 20 new shops in 2024, including additional stores under the Marathon Sports banner. (Fleet Feet acquired Boston-based Marathon Sports and its 18 storefronts in June 2022, though elected to retain the Marathon Sports name rather than rebrand those shops to Fleet Feets.) In 2024, Pointer says Fleet Feet will also be reimagining its rewards program with multiple tiers to increase customer engagement and revamping its website as the company continues to refine its voice and style. “We have work to do and that’s okay,” he says. Pointer also promises to seek out inspiration from “anywhere and everywhere” to ensure Fleet Feet is creating dynamic retail environments for its customers. He points to the transactional ease of convenience stores to the energizing look of the Harry Potter flagship store in New York City as examples from which Fleet Feet can learn a thing or two. Simultaneously, though, Pointer acknowledges a spirited idea is only half the battle. “Ideas are infinite, but exe cut ion i s wh e r e t h e money is made and lost,” he says. “And we’re going to prioritize executing at a very high level.” n © 2023 Diversified Communication

Palmetto Running’s owners Christian Fyfe, Keri Straughn and Rob Fyfe believe that operating a run specialty store in South Carolina’s Lowcountry involves more than the day-to-day operations. It is about giving back to the community and taking care of the environment.

It’s about mental wellness. It’s about the feeling of being a part of something bigger. Together we have the power to change lives.” About Their Local Running Community: “We are grateful to live in an area where we can run outside 100 percent of the year.

It shows that their hard work hasn’t gone unnoticed.” Advice for Becoming a Best Running Store: “Step outside your four walls and find a way to give back to the community that keeps you going.”

We have a massive presence on the local race scene and if you’re someone who likes to travel for races, chances are there will be someone else on the Team racing as well. The Race Team is the heartbeat of our stores. If we need guinea pigs for different ideas, we test them out on the Race Team. When brands are looking to do product testing, Team members get first dibs. They are activists, fundraisers and volunteers. They formed splinter groups to provide connections for folks who

is always innovating staff recognition programs, processes, technology, events and business opportunities. We are never comfortable being complacent. We are always looking for new opportunities to inspire our community to move, valuing our team and building our business one great experience at a time. So much so that we have pace leaders that have taken on leadership roles within the training group to help keep the pace, provide guidance and create an inclusive community. One of the most unique qualities of Team Running Lab is that we have athletes of all abilities running and walking with us. GA, and 2024 will mark the business’ 20th anniversary. Big Peach Running now boasts nine locations — including two Big Peach Ride + Run stores (Brookhaven and Midtown). A tenth door is slated to open in Dawsonville, GA, in late 2023. What Makes Your Store Unique: “I’m not sure we are ‘unique.’ We participate in a channel that is collectively committed to serving its respective and collective communities, while embracing and promoting a lifestyle that is wonderfully worth sharing. Yes, we have achieved some scale and influence that is a legitimate blessing and an equally appropriate level of responsibility. Moreover, we have assets like Big Peach On-Wheels, our Big Peach Ride & Run concept in two stores, title-sponsored events, a Leadership Team Retreat and our Big Peach Screen Printing & Embroidery operation. But they are only unique in that they are some of our respective means to best pursue our potential for the benefit of those who we serve and seek to serve.” What the Award Means to Them: “If we’re honest, the escalation of business volume and store traffic in 2021 came at a pace that we were not able to maintain relative to hiring, onboarding and training. Along with the other widely and rightly reported challenges faced by the sporting goods industry last year, we were too slow to address the gap that had emerged relative to pre-pandemic service levels and service levels on the backside of when our stores were required to be closed. Over the last 18 months, we’ve dedicated ourselves to the absolute best service proposition through new positions, new training programs and new requirements with new hires unlike any other time in our history. And that says a lot, as our Guest Promise leads with our commitment to this aspect of our business! Still, this award confirms that we’ve made desired progress and the high standards we set for ourselves have merit.”

We love each other, our customers and our community and we care deeply and we show that through our words and actions.” What the Award Means to Them: “Everyone on our team loves to serve others, so sometimes it can be weird to be awarded for something that comes so naturally, something that can be considered a ‘calling’ for people. That said, I believe affirmation is a human desire we all have, so receiving this award means so much to our team, to know that what they do matters enough for our customers to nominate us each year.” 54

She opened the store in 2004, then called A Running Start, to realize her dream of providing a serviceoriented shop where runners of all ages and abilities could find shoes, technical apparel and accessories to meet their needs. A Running Start joined the Fleet Feet family in 2018. What Makes Your Store Unique: “Our staff and their commitment to personalized service, customer satisfaction and community involvement makes our store unique. People seek us out because they have heard from friends, colleagues or family members that we are the best at fitting shoes and because we take the time to listen to customers and address their specific needs. Most of our customers are not runners and are looking for solutions to their problems. We take pride in going above and beyond for older customers who are looking for pain relief and stability. We equip nurses and medical professionals with sneakers and insoles to help them feel more comfortable and less fatigued while they are helping others. We help customers find shoes that allow them to begin a fitness program of walking. We have expanded our store and added a community room for our workshops that include free physical therapy consultations, sport psychology, strength training, yoga for runners and intro to trail running, along with many demo runs. We also host wine and apparel pairings and customer appreciation parties yearly.” What the Award Means to Them: “It means the world to us. Being recognized for something that we love to do is very rewarding and makes us want to continue to grow our impact in our community. hands. Melody Marshall, John’s longtime accountant and a runner since age 12, now owns the business and works to maintain the aspects of the store that have made it a staple of the Lexington community. What Makes Your Store Unique: “John’s Run/Walk Shop is independently owned and operated. We do what we do – and we do it well — all by ourselves, without input from a corporation or franchise. This means we find our own vendors, build our own relationships, design our own stores, put together our own employee benefits and have our own methods for every single aspect of our business. This allows us to do these things better than any chain or online store ever will because we know Lexington. We’ve been here for 45 years, giving us generations of input into how we can be the best part of Lexington that we can be. That’s what makes us special and allows us to stand out without ever being replicated. Sure, it means a hell of a lot more work. But it’s worth it if it means better serving our community.” What the Award Means to Them: “This award means validation that doing the right thing matters. Supporting your local community, spending more time with customers to ensure they have the right product, refusing to cut corners — these take more effort and dedication. It’s not easy, but it’s worth it. Being in business for 45 years and being recognized as a Best Running Store will hopefully serve as inspiration to other businesses that putting customers and community first is the best way to run a business.”

could possibly be recognized nationally, but we were just a bit short of the mark. Over the last couple of years, we’ve put in considerable effort to fine-tune even the smallest details so that every customer walking through our doors gets an A+ experience from every one of our staff members. This award is the result of the hard work and dedication our staff members have poured into serving our community.”

RUN HUB NORTHWEST Eugene, OR www.runhubnw.com Key Personnel: Dustin Pearce, Owner/GM; Kris Pearce, Owner/ Accounting; Lillie Schrock, Store Manager/Accessory Buyer; Lauren Moe, Marketing Manager; Jack Matherly, Footwear Manager History: Run Hub opened its doors in downtown Eugene in May 2015 during Eugene Marathon Weekend. The store is located about 1.5 miles from the University of Oregon and the famous Hayward Field. What Makes Your Store Unique: “Run Hub is built on two primary cornerstones: providing an awesome customer experience and building community through our events, activities, training programs and club. It’s debatable if that makes us unique in the industry, but we do those things really well. Otherwise, to use a baseball term — we are a good utility player as a run specialty store. While we may not top the charts in any one area, we excel at the basics and do many things well, which make us a valuable asset to our customers and community.” What the Award Means to Them: “We appreciate the chance to get a report card each year from our customers and industry. The BRS award gives us that opportunity. Are we good enough to continue to have people nominate us? Will we hit the mark when we are secret shopped? How will we compare to other stores? The BRS award is a valuable tool and yearly reminder to get shipshape and make sure we are making the grade to be one of the best in our industry.” 65
